4-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Approach
Almost three decades ago, Dr. Helen Kalan was the first to identify the disorders of sexual desire as distinct entities, thus showing the way to more effective treatment of all the sexual disorders. Now, in this volume, drawing upon her systematic recording of the treatment experience and outcome of over 6000 patients whom she has treated - and by recognizing and studying not just the successes but the treatment failures as well - Dr. Kaplan has brought the art of science of sex therapy to new levels of clarity and effectiveness.

In this hardcover, Dr. Kaplan applies her comprehensive, integrated, psychodynamically oriented approach to arrive at an individualized treatment attuned to the specific diagnosis and unique circumstances of each patient. In addition, the author examines psychiatric disorders that can lead to loss of sexual desire, as well as organic causes, including medical conditions, drugs and aging. Throughout the volume, more than 30 case studies illuminated the varied clinical approaches to the various disorders of sexual desire.

This book provides a remarkable synthesis of trailblazing theory, painstaking research, and highly focused clinical treatment that will make this volume an indispensable guide for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This book is one of the texts used in the Abnormal Psychology (PSYC 4320) at East Tennessee State University. It is by far one of the best textbooks I have had. The layout is very easy to follow and all disorders are summed up in a box at the end of each chapter that list symptoms and diagnostic criteria. I took my study guide notes for all the tests straight from these boxes and passed the class with a 3.6 (on a 4.0 scale). Each chapter starts out with a story relevant to the disorders being discussed and at the end of the chapter you will find questions pertaining to the story designed to quiz you on what you have learned in the section.

The book kept my attention as I read each chapter and I was so impressed by it that I bought a copy of the book to keep as a personal reference after I finished the class.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk Science at its finest
This is the typical rehashing (pardon the pun) of the age old junk science the govt. has been spewing about marijuana. If you want an objective look at actual scientific research on marijuana I highly recommend "Marijuana Myths, Marijuana Facts - A review of the scientific evidence" by Lynn Zimmer, Ph.D. and John P. Morgan, M.D.

This is a great book to give to your kids if you don't mind lying to them, but if you want them to trust you, I recommend the Institute of Medicine's Marijuana and Medicine Assessing the Science Base.A lot of kids who smoke marijuana know a lot about it, and they'll just get angry with you when they find out the truth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars HEALING CHILDREN'S ATTENTION & BEHAVIOR DISORDERS & PSYCHOLOGICAL TREATMENTS
Amazing book, and everyone that has a child or family member with any ATTENTION & BEHAVIOR DISORDERS should be reading this book, because prescription drugs is not the answer at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book which saves children.
I'm rating this book 5 star, because the criterion for Amazon 5-star rating is "I love this book!", and I really do. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know the foundations of orthomolecular medicine, and the basics of nutrition for children.

That said, this book is almost completely a republishing of the great Dr. Hoffer's "ABC of Natural Nutrition for Children". The present title is not truly representative of the content, as the information contained is vital for all children. Additionally, the subject matter largely deals with other problems such as schizophrenia. I personally was disppointed when I bought this book, because I have the previous edition, and I felt ripped off, having bought the same book twice, and having read the previous edition three times. Three times? Yes, it's that good.

The late and great Dr. Hoffer, one of my lifetime heroes, was most important pioneer of orthomolecular medicine, which I believe will one day be recognized as primary medicine, the primary disease prevention modality and first line of cure. This is especially true of psychiatric medicine, the convention approach to which has never found a cure for anything. On the contrast, the orthomolecular approach as outlined in the present book actually cures people, sending them back to their families and society as well beings. Perhaps the greatest strength of this book is that many actual case histories are brought, turning theory into proven fact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vitamin Therapy Beats Ritalin or Adderall Hands Down
(The reviewer is Assistant Editor of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine)

A riddle: how many years does it take for a new way of treating behavior disorders in children to be generally accepted? The answer is forty, according to Abram Hoffer, M.D, Ph.D. There are few physicians who have sufficient experience to personally validate such a claim, but Dr. Hoffer can. He pioneered megavitamin research and treatment back in the early 1950's, and, half a century later, has still been largely ignored by the medical profession. Why? Because Dr. Hoffer treated learning disabled and/or ADHD kids with vitamins. And, he got results.

This is a concise and powerful book. It contains more than enough information to set the medical profession on its ear. In my opinion, it is the most elegant explanation of orthomolecular (megavitamin) medicine since Linus Pauling's historic 1968 paper in Science. In fact, Hoffer had a 17year jump on Pauling; vitamin B-3 (niacin, or niacinamide) to treat behavioral disorders was first used by Hoffer and colleague Dr. Humphrey Osmond in 1951. Niacin worked then, and it works now.

I know a 10 year old boy who was having considerable school and behavior problems. Interestingly enough, the child was already on physician-prescribed little bits of niacin, with a total daily dose of less than 150 mg.Not a bad beginning, since the RDA for kids is under 20 mg/day. But it wasn't enough to be effective, and the boy was slated for the Ritalin-for-lunch bunch. Dr. Hoffer suggested trying him on 500 mg niacinamide three times daily (1,500 mg total). That's a lot, but niacinamide is a comfortable, flush-free form of vitamin B-3.So Mom tried it.

What a difference!

People often ask, "If this treatment is so good, how come my doctor doesn't know about it?How come it is not on the news?"The answer may have more to do with medical politics than with medical science. Consider Hoffer's views on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: "The DSM system (the standard of the American Psychiatric Association) has little or no relevance to diagnosis. It has no relevance to treatment, either, because no matter which terms are used to classify these children, they are all recommended for treatment with drug therapy" combined, sometimes, with other non-megavitamin approaches. "If the entire diagnostic scheme were scrapped today, it would make almost no difference to the way these children were treated, or to the outcome of treatment.Nor would their patients feel any better or worse." Statements like these do not exactly endear one to the medical community.

And, as if such statements are not enough, Hoffer then devotes the balance of the book to setting out genuine nutritional alternatives to drug therapy for ADHD children. He provides vitamin dosage details, food tables, along with a large number of references. In addition, many case histories are included, along with a bad foods list, numerous research summaries, precise recommendations for optimum diet, comparisons of drugs and vitamins, a discussion of allergies and food additives, behavioral self-tests, and, most importantly, a wealth of professional experience.

The best part is that this is a book of practical, positive advice. Criticisms and even lawsuits over the hazards of tranquilizers, Ritalin, and related pharmaceuticals are on the rise, but neither court nor controversy can cure your child. "Battered parents" (Hoffer's term) need to know what to do, and now. Saying no to drugs" also requires saying "yes" to something else. That something else is nutrition, properly employed.

For those who say there is insufficient scientific evidence to support megavitamin therapy for children's behavior disorders, I say they haven't been looking hard enough. Hoffer and his colleagues conducted the first double-blind controlled vitamin trials in psychiatric history in 1952. He was among the first to employ vitamin C as an antioxidant, use the B-vitamins against heart disease, and, with Dr. Osmond, was the first to employ niacin to treat behavioral disorders.Dr.Hoffer has over 500 publications to date. This single book (and he has written nearly 30 others) will present the reader with the most comprehensive and comprehensible review of vitamin therapy for ADHD that I have yet seen.

The simple way to determine whether vitamins will help your child is to try them. When you read Dr. Hoffer you get invaluable guidance from the foremost authority on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, eye-opening, engaging
This is one of the best books I have read, and THE best one dealing with mental illness. The inside look at the thought processes of two men with the illness is totally eye-opening because you see it from THEIRperspective, not the rest of society's.I recommend this book highly. After reading, I still feel like I'd like to give each of these men a hug.

4-0 out of 5 stars Schizophrenia:Two Intelligent Insights
Being one of Mr. Stuart Emmons's past professors, I was especially intrigued and fascinated by his straightforward, open, and touching account of his encounter with schizophrenia.Whenever a bright, conscientious student disappears abruptly after finishing a course, one ponders about his sudden departure and wonders what has happened to him.For this reason Stuart's candid and illuminating story was especially welcomed.Craig's experience is equally insightful.Together they give the layman a rare opportunity to probe into the inner thoughts of intelligent and articulate men as they cope, relate, create, exist with paranoid schizophrenia. Most laymen, including me, are terribly uninformed, even misinformed, and sometimes insensitive to this mysterious illness. The book should be read at least twice, the first time ignoring the psychologists' repetitious notes which disrupt the flow of the images, thoughts, and actions of the narrators.Their notes can be read!as a whole. Then each of the stories can be reread. The book reintroduced Stuart Emmons to me and we have subsequently exchanged many letters.I highly recommend this relatively slim volume with its tremendous impact and positive message. And congratulations to two courageous and compassionate writers--Stuart Emmons and Craig Geiser.

4-0 out of 5 stars Schizohprhenia: Two first-person perspectives
Mysteries of schizophrenia still perplex family members, therapists and researchers today. "Living with Schizophrenia" (Emmons,Geiser et al.) gives those wanting to know more about the cognitive processes of schizophrenics more than just a glimpse into this disorder. Two first-person accounts are represented by Stuart Emmons and Craig Geiser. Both offer significant insights and rather apt descriptions of personal experiences.Poetry by Emmons and unique artwork by Geiser are also included. However, interspersed throughout the text, one will find unmerciful redundancies in the form of(PN's) or psychologist's notes. The book succeeds as Two first-person accounts without overbearing technical jargon often debated, and offers the layperson or psychology student a good adjunct reference. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Bipolar Disorder - Questions and Answers from a Support Group
Peer support groups are an important source of information, understanding, and support for people with bipolar disorder. All of the questions that were asked in one particular bipolar support group were written down, with answers, and published in this book. The author is a bipolar II patient and his answers have been reviewed by his psychiatrist. The questions cover a wider range of topics than is found in other handbooks for bipolar patients however the question and answer format limits the depth of each of the answers to typically a few paragraphs. The author's personal struggle with the disorder comes through clearly. However, the author's experience is with the bipolar II form of the disorder and I felt that aspects of the disorder unique to bipolar I were missing. The author's religious faith is interwoven with advice on coping with the disorder which I found irritating as I suspect will others who do not share the author's religious beliefs. Overall the book presents an unusual mix of personal experience and practical advice aimed at patients and those who support them.

4-0 out of 5 stars A piece in the bipolar puzzle solution
I found this to be a pretty good book about bipolar disorder- practical, well written, and easy to use.The book is up against some heavyweights since it is a practical guide to living with the illness- Torrey's "Surviving Manic Depression" and Miklowitz's "Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide" are formidable, excellent books on this subject.I like to get my information from a variety of sources however, so I think this book is a worthy addition to any small library on bipolar disorder, even though it doesn't provide the level of detail or expertise that the other two books bring to the table.Nonetheless, I learned quite a bit from this book.Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is so true!
In this book, the author says that the right medication is the key to relief from symptoms of bipolar illness. His statement is completely true.

When others, like Elliot who wrote a review here, say that therapy is the key, THEY ARE WRONG!Elliot does not see that the illness is a biological one resulting in mood disturbances. If Elliot could rid himself of bipolar symptoms through therapy, he DID NOT HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER, but had symptoms from other origins.

This bipolar book has the answers and they are backed up by countless people who have a bipolar disorder.I say to Elliot and all people ignorant of the truth, get your facts straight and quit giving your misguided, twisted advice or experience.

Buy the book and avoid going down the desolate road that Elliot is on!

1-0 out of 5 stars Medication Is NOT the "Key," and Is In Fact Dangerous!
As a person who has fully recovered from a diagnosis of "manic depression," or "bipolar disorder," I can say with certainty that "medication" is NOT the "key," as this book claims it is. You read that correctly, by the way---I recovered from a DIAGNOSIS of "manic depression," and everything that went along with it---the psychiatrists, the "concerned" family members, the drugs, the hospitalizations---all of it.

We are all individual human beings, and each of us has a particular outlook and way of behaving toward others and toward the world. If one's outlook and one's behaviors and responses toward others and toward the world are troublesome or dangerous to ourselves or to others, then one needs to be made aware of what is wrong, and one needs to be helped to change those things, not given a permanent drug prescription.

There are therapists who are skilled at giving such help, which can lead to recovery. Unfortunately, what happens far more often than not is that a psychiatrist sells one a permanent "diagnosis," along with the permanent drug, or drugs, that "matches" the diagnosis, and no further progress is ever made toward recovery.

Allow me to point out to the authors of "Bipolar Puzzle Solution" that lithium, the main drug used for manic depression, is positively toxic, and toxic overdoses, which can be fatal, regularly occur. I myself experienced such an episode. For two weeks I was semi-comatose in the hospital, and I remmember nothing about that period of time. After that episode, Tegratol was substituted for the lithium, and it had the side effect of permanently lowering my blood platelet count. Also, because regular anti-depressants did not help when I was depressed, I was given MAO Inhibitors. I found out later that over the long term, they can permanently alter brain chemistry, leaving one permanently dependent on them.

Drugs may have their place in the treatment of "manic depression" or "bipolar disorder," but they are not "the key." The key lies in getting into therapy with a therapist or counselor who can help one recognize and change one's troublesome behaviors.

For example, a psychiatrist I was seeing told me I had "a problem with rage," and that because that was "a part of my makeup," I would "always have a problem with rage." When I left that psychiatrist, and began seeing a "mere" and very gifted social worker, she lost no time in showing me that I ALWAYS had A CHOICE about whether or not to get into a rage, and she taught me that I am responsible for, and have control over, my feelings and actions.

Today I am no longer someone who lives in fear of my feelings, "moods" and actions. I no longer have to swallow drugs to "keep myself under control." I no longer need any psychiatrist to give me his opinion about my sanity. I am instead a free, well and responsible individual.

It took a lot of work and determination, but it was unquestionably worth it! "The key" is not medication; the key is learning about and changing one's behavior and one's outlook.

3-0 out of 5 stars Caution-
There are two things that potential readers need to be aware of. First, that the author has been diagnosed as Bipolar II. There is a difference between I and II, so if you happen to be Bipolar I, do not expect to read about the extremes that you may experience. Second, this author comes from a Christian perspective. This is great if you happen to be a Christian; otherwise, you might find his references to God/He/Jesus rather annoying. I do have to note that the physician,Gerald Nelson, portrays a pleasing demeanor that makes reading his comments enjoyable. Therefore, if you are a Christian with Bipolar II, go for it. If you are not, borrow a copy before you buy one. ... Read more

Product Description
This casebook offers fifteen lively cases that illustratea wide range of specific DSM-IV diagnoses covered in the abnormal psychology course. These cases integrate issues of racial and gender diversity and provide insight into the lives of people suffering from a variety of psychological disorders, highlighting how psychological distress is experienced and treated in real life. Each case follows a similar pattern to aid reader comprehension. An Introduction describes the problems in the person's life, or the catalyst bringing him or her into therapy. Finally, the Prognosis section covers reasonable expectations of what the future might hold for this person. Critical Thinking Questions are posed at the end of each chapter.Gender and cultural diversity are highlighted among both clients and psychotherapists with important cultural issues woven throughout the cases.
