Editorial Review

Book Description
"This carefully edited volume is comprehensive in its scope, ranging from ethical considerations in research to the ethics of working with gays and lesbians in psychotherapy to ethical issues in the use of animals in research. The two dozen chapters are carefully and clearly written and provide useful guidelines for resolving important questions and issues. But at least as significant, this book encourages the reader to think deeply about the many complex issues that are inherent to the study of behavior and efforts to make changes in peoples lives. Sometimes unequivocal answers are elusive, but knowing what questions to ask surely enhances our scientific and applied efforts. A must read."

- Gerald Davison, University of Southern California

"The Handbook of Professional Ethics for Psychologists provides a much needed review of the philosophical issues and unanswered questions raised by the Code of Ethics of the American Psychological Association. This book will make an excellent textbook for ethics courses in the social sciences. The coverage of topics makes the book appropriate to address the current movement for Responsible Conduct of Research, a movement that is likely to result in requiring all university personnel to have proficiency in the ethics of research, mentoring, and scholarship."

-Arthur C. Houts, University of Memphis

The Handbook of Professional Ethics for Psychologists provides comprehensive coverage of topics typically neglected in books on ethical issues in psychology. Rather than take ethical pronouncements as dogma not to be questioned but simply understood and observed, William T. ODonohue and Kyle E. Ferguson encourage a questioning, critical attitude. Divided into four parts, this provocative text provides comprehensive coverage of foundational issues, professional issues, special topics, and special populations.

A distinguished group of scholars and researchers examine

  • Moral reasoning and the ethics of professional licensing
  • Confidentiality in psychotherapy
  • Fees and financial arrangements
  • The termination and referral of clients
  • The use of deception in research
  • Ethnic minority issues
  • Consent in the treatment and research of children

The Handbook of Professional Ethics for Psychologists considers the compatibility of science and morality. Challenging readers to question the fundamental philosophical values of professional psychology, the editors and contributors inspire the ethical impulse and encourage active moral leadership.

An essential reference for professional and academic psychologists and counselors, the Handbook of Professional Ethics for Psychologists is also an exceptional primary or supplementary reader for graduate students enrolled in courses on Ethics in Psychology and Ethics and Professional Concerns and for anyone considering the compatibility of science and morality.

A compelling personal account of his own mental illness by an eminent clinical psychologist and professor of psychology. Dr. Norman Endler relates the story of his depressive breakdown, including his early symptoms, his family's reactions, the effect on his work, the prognosis of the illness, and his therapy. 5-0 out of 5 stars The journey out of depression as lived by... a psychologist
I do believe that this book takes a whole new dimension by the fact that the author... both LIVED and lived THROUGH a depression AND is... a psychologist. He therefore has the academic knowledge as well as the lifeexperience to express the "Holiday of Darkness".

Anotherinteresting fact... is that he was a "stable, athletic man, at theheight of his career" when depression struck. So I believe it removesthe stigma or prejudices that people may sometimes have on people that cometo suffer from depression.

It is not only an account; chapters covertreatment and treatment alternatives and finishes off with a veryencouraging chapter "Where do we go from here".. that hints thatthere IS light after darkness.. Depression IS treateable! "eminentlytreatable" to quote the author! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Critical View
"We know Jesus Christ in so many ways. He's often, however, shrouded in the yellowed gauze of antiquity. By placing Christ in such a modern context, Tom Bruno opens a very modern passageway through which the example of Jesus seems not only a possible application for our lives, but a critical one." Devin Scillian Newscaster, Detroit Michigan & Children's Author

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY INSPIRING
NEW YORK,This book was a great inspiration to me. It explains how Jesus lived his life and what His words mean for us and how we should live our lives. A chapter that really helped me was the one entitled "He taught Us not to Worry."Prior to reading this chapter, I would drive myself nuts worrying, I know now that worry is a lack of faith. After reading this book, I got the courage to update my resume and found a new job. As I read this book I felt God was speaking directly to me.Bruno helped me get out of my ruts and really enjoying life.I thank Bruno for helping get my life back and have a plan for my life. If you only read one book this year, this should be the one!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good sound-bite nonfiction
A good example of what I've come to term "sound bite nonfiction", this book was a quick read with several "hmmmm" moments. The premise of evolutionary psychology - that the evolution of human minds has not kept up with the changes in our environment, and that the unconscious reason for everything we dois based on sex and the desire to reproduce - is discussed in short sections with titles such as "Why do men like blonde bombshells (and why do women want to look like them)?", "Why might handsome men make bad husbands?", "What do Bill Gates and Paul McCartney have in common with criminals?"For the first three-quarters of this book, I had few problems with the author's conclusions, and enough "yeah, that makes sense" moments to keep me interested. However, in the last couple chapters, they stretch the concepts of evolutionary psychology to try to explain suicide bombers, why single women travel more than men, and several other questions that I just don't quite buy.But there's enough in the beginning of the book to make it worth picking up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains a Lot
This book is clearly written and a quick, easy read. Many of the main arguments are backed by solid research and logic. Some of the theoriesseem to be a stretch, which is to be expected in a new, rapidly expanding body of knowledge. This book provides some of the best explanations of human behavior I have come across. The world seems a little less confusing to me after reading this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing ideas but fast and loose with facts
While Mr. Kanazawa* offers many fascinating explanations for the "why" behind our actions, he also jumps to far too many specious conclusions and plays a little loose with the facts.

Why, after having just given birth are daughters typically visited by their mothers while their while mothers-in-law might be inclined to stay away?We could jump to the conclusion presented in the book that mothers-in-law act on the unconscious realization that the baby might not be their genetic grandchild.Or we could stick with Occam's Razor here:most women prefer their mothers to their mothers-in-law and control with whom they spend those first few weeks of recovery.(In fact, there's a good evolutionary psychology reason as to why we like our own.)As Mr. Kanazawa says, some stereotypes are true--in this case, about how eager we are to spend time with our mothers-in-law.

Mr. Kanazawa also tends to make absolutist statements, such as the one in which he states that "The sex gap in earnings and the so-called glass ceiling are caused not by employer discrimination or any other external factors, but by the sex differences in internal preferences, values, desires, dispositions and temperaments."Does his analysis adequately explain 70 or 80% of the differential?Perhaps. It's certainly a logical hypothesis that resonates both with biological and anecdotal evidence. But does it explain 100% of the reason? There are simply far too many clearly documented instances of bias to let society off the hook so quickly or to scrap the EEOC quite yet.

I'm also amused by his explanation for why women become nurses and school teachers when one doesn't have to look too far back in our history before we see those professions dominated almost exclusively by men.(In fact, men didn't begin to flee those professions until women began entering them, just as originally-male names stop being given to boys once girls are given them and it is socially unacceptable for men to wear dresses.)One senses that had Mr. Kanazawa taken his snapshot in the 1800s instead of the 2000s that he would have jumped to the same conclusion but modified the evidence to fit the explanation, ie that men become teachers or nurses because those professions require physical discipline or an analytical understanding of chemistry. If the explanation stays the same while the evidence around it changes, one has to wonder about the validity of the claim.

He plays equally fast and loose with other "facts."His conclusion about body image among Iranian women would be convincing... if one didn't know that, by some reliable reports, close to 1/3 of Iranians likely have access to satellite television and may be almost as inundated with Western culture as we are.

His subchapter heading "Why are most suicide bombers Muslim?" is similarly disingenuous. From 1980 to 2003, the largest number of suicide bombings was conducted by the Tamil Tigers (LTTE), a Marxist-Leninist group in Sri Lanka largely comprised of non-religious Hindus. (Robert Pape, Dying to Win--Pape also points out that before 1980, suicide terrorist attacks as we know them were "practically unknown" and that while suicide missions did occur they were far less common than today.)

Unless Islamic society has only become polygynous or begun promising virgins upon martyrdom in the last four years (or 27 years), we have to look to a far more convincing explanation for the large uptick in the last few years in Islamic suicide bombers.

The very first explanation certainly has to be where the #1 disparate-force conflict in the world right now is occurring. If the United States had gone to war in the Philippines--just as it did in the late 1800s--would we be surprised to discover that the insurgency was led by Catholics?--just as it was in the late 1800s, Mr. Kanazawa's ridiculous assertion that insurgencies are not a normal response to invasion aside.

Above and beyond the "where," Robert Cialdini (in Influence: Science and Practice, 2001) offers a very good "why" explanation based on "social proof" and the viral nature of human action that has nothing to do with sex at all: we look to similar others for evidence of how we should act.Which is why, following a well-publicized suicide, there is a sharp increase in suicides only among those people who are similar to the original suicide victim.

Mr. Kanazawa's explanation, while seeming elegant at first blush, relies on generalizations that don't hold up under scrutiny. If access to sex is the primary motivator, what explains the increasing use of female suicide terrorists (estimates suggest as many 1/6 of total suicide operatives for organizations like the Palestinian Islamic Jihad) or the large number of married men?Or the large number of high-status men who, under Mr. Kanazawa's framework, would not need to resort to high-risk behavior to find mates?

Mr. Kanazawa is quick to criticize social scientists--I began wishing he would simply abbreviate the phrase "Standard Social Science Model" since it appeared on almost every other page--for ignoring evidence that doesn't fit their pet theories and yet he himself so frequently falls victim to the same temptation. The ideas presented in the book are intriguing, and many of them will, I have no doubt, be vindicated by further testing. But readers should read this book with a critical eye, and pause to consider each claim before being swept along by dubious evidence.Evolutionary psychology is not as well-served by this book as an armchair enthusiast for the study like myself would have hoped.

*As the preface states, Mr. Kanazawa is the primary author of the book as Mr. Miller died shortly following the first rough draft.

1-0 out of 5 stars the swan song for a field scrambling for acceptance?
This is the absolute worst kind of "science book" published for a general audience. It is full of psuedo-facts and poorly reasoned arguments. If an explanation sounds good, then that's the answer. It was unclear when the authors were making a statement if it was generally held to be true within the discipline or it was a theory.Their own work was all presented established fact, rather than their opinions. My thirteen year old saw through the yawning gaps in logic.I could not finish reading the book, and I never don't finish a book.

Evolutionary psychology has been around for 20 years or so, and has some very valuable contributionstowards understanding human behavior.By their nature, the theories are hard to prove, although with good science, we can at least believe that an idea is plausible. The leaders of this field are already heavily criticized because the results aren't always politically correct and because humans are very resistant to the idea that their behavior is not entirely conscious and of their own free will. This book has dealt the field a serious and perhaps fatal blow.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most fun I've had with non-fiction in some time
Although some of the theories are still in fledgling stages and research is thin, they are none the less compelling and exciting to read about. Then again, many of the other theories have been well researched, peer-reviewed and tested. The author(s) do a good job of pointing out the evidence, validity, and assumptions regarding each. The format is simple and intuitive, very well put together. This book is basically a primer for people interested in evolutionary psychology with some fascinating insight and entertaining bits of information thrown in. It's excellent and I seriously couldn't put it down. I read the book from cover to cover in less then three days.

Warning: This book is not PC. The author(s) make a well argued case for this up front. Some of the material can be offensive to some people but the true message is the evidence of science, not our emotional reactions to it. If you can let go of your emotional attachments to a few social paradigms and review the evidence logically, you'll be OK. If not, this may not be the book for you. By the way, it does not confirm any particular racial biases or abilities, etc. Quite the opposite. It exposes that the cultural kit and the abilities we share are universal across all of humanity. So no, this is no eugenics revival or anything sad and unscientific like that.

The other issue I've noticed with certain readers is that they apply a very egotistical view to the theories. For example, I don't personally like blonds any more than brunettes. I am a statistical anomaly, just like many other people are. Simply because I don't share the majority view point of subjects tested the world over, does not mean that the results of the testing are invalid or that a trend significant enough to warrant some explaining does not exist. I keep hearing things like 'Hey, I don't like blonds! This is wrong!' Anyway, you can see the fallacy in that.

Take theories and hypotheses presented in this book for what they are based upon the research and evidence presented, not your gut reaction to the outcomes. Of course further rational explanations will evolve as further studies are taken and new evidence is uncovered. That's the nature of the scientific process!

Anyway, very fun read. I really enjoyed it. ... Read more

Book Description
While it is common knowledge that physical illness affects mental wellbeing and vice versa, there has been a surprising lack of cooperation between psychotherapists and MDs in serving patients' needs. In a fragmented health care system, psychotherapists need practical strategies for effectively collaborating with medical professionals. The Collaborative Psychotherapist provides step-by-step guidance on how psychotherapists can work with their medical colleagues on a routine basis.Such skills are illustrated through a variety of case studies involving adult and child patients commonly seen in psychotherapy and family therapy practice. To answer the questions most frequently asked by therapists, the authors interview four veteran therapists and one medical doctor who provide valuable insider knowledge of how to collaborate successfully. The volume authors also provide advice on how therapists can extend their skills to collaborate more intensively on complex cases that may involve specialists.

Among the useful tools in this book are model letters of introduction, suggestions for follow-up communication, and checklists of medical issues to consider when evaluating patients. All of these can be copied freely and modified according to the practitioner's specific needs. After reading this book, readers will be ready to work successfully with their medical colleagues, ensuring the best care for their patients and, as a byproduct, increase their professional satisfaction and referral base in the community. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GOING STRAIGHT
GOING STRAIGHT is a comprehensive and exceptional self-help
manual for criminal offenders who want to build a respectable
life after punishment. This book was written by a uniquely
credible and knowledgable author-mentor, whose straight-forward
advice can be of value for both pre-release and post-release
rehabilitation.

Prisoners, parolees, ex-convicts need a role model, a mentor--
someone who can teach from similar life experiences. Someone
who can help them overcome not only society's dismal image of
offenders, but also their own low expectations and self loathing.

The author, Dr. Paul Fauteck, was an ex-con who, after doing
four years of hard time, eventually became a successful and
highly respected forensic psychologist. In his book, he shows
the offender how to adapt, to network, and succeed in a world
that few criminals hardly know exists.

Unlike some experts, Fauteck doesn't cut offenders any slack or
responsibility for making the most out of the rest of their
lives. His book teaches how to begin building a worthwhile life
day by day with practical coping skills, self awareness, and
lifelong principles. His writing contains both humor and great
insight into the hearts and minds of recovering criminals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended as a tool to reduce recidivism
The text is clearly written and logically organized. The author uses a straight forward approach which he appropriately mingles with humor.Drawings throughout the text add levity. The annotated table of contents is truly beneficial.

Dr. Fauteck has thoughtfully created a practical guide for individuals who are attempting to adapt to life once they have been released from prison. He offers advice spanning the topics from family, friends, loved ones and those who offer an ex-convict assistance in staying out of trouble, to those who assist the ex-convict in maintaining criminal ways.

Dr. Fauteck points out the traps of blaming others for difficulties and firmly advocates personal responsibility. The author guides the reader toward personal growth. If the reader is able to integrate the advice given in these chapters into his/her life, the reader will find himself/herself on the road to success.

I higly recommend this book for those who are incarcerated, prison officials, counselors, mental health professionals, social workers and educators.I predict that if individuals released from prison are able to integrate the guidelines outlined in Dr. Fauteck's, Going Straight into their lives, recidivism rates will diminish considerably. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Drawn Out History of Psychology
(This review refers to the second edition.) The Great Psychologists is just what the title makes it out to be. The book is an account of the evolution of psychology by examining eminent figures in the times leading up to the development psychology and the men who later devoted themselves to scientific work in the subject. Each chapter examines an individual, a well explained overview of his thinkings, and the cultural and historical contexts in which he worked. The biographies of each person are detailed and seem to be included more for history than science. One gets a definite sense of how psychology came to be. A good background in the subject would be of benefit. This edition is copyrighted in the late 1960s and thus does not go beyond this point in time. It is an old graduate level textbook from when my father was receiving his doctorate. The last chapter very much dates the book. The wording at times can be verbose, and the book itself is very long. The last two chapters seem to lose the reader's interest as the last one especially is a long list of names and fields of study. More current editions of this book would probably be of much more value.

5-0 out of 5 stars glance first before buying ANY book on a disorder
As any medical professional knows, no illness is categorized by symptoms XYZ alone. There are always variations and this book adjusts to them quite well.I am sorry that previous reviewers didn't glance through the book first and pay attnetion to their own bodies and what works for them.

This books is also wonderful in that it doesn't lable IBS as being "all in your head".It is very objective in describing the many factors that may be causing your IB symptoms.Things like stress, food, fiber, and possible other food triggers.

This book is also short, and doesn't go into a list of supplements you should be taking. It focuses on how to best help yourself, rather than telling you to do #1, #2, or #3, as every body is slightly different. It helps you focus on your symptoms, and what may help to alleviate them.

It is important to understand that IBS in THIS country is often related to the Type A lifestyle, and often times modifing this (by reducing stress, focusing on quality of food choices) often helps. However, things like lactose intolerance and celiac sprue are SEPERATE. You may be lactose intolerant, and by eliminating lactose from your diet you will be fine. However, that may not be a problem for every person suffering from IBS. Same thing with celiac sprue--just because you have IBS does not mean you have celiac sprue. It's VERY important to be honest with your symptoms and treat yourself accordingly.

As a medical professional I believe in western medicine, but I also believe that people need to take responsibility for helping themselves. There is no magic pill or magic cure for everything.Sometimes you have to be patient and go through a little trial and error. This book will help you do just that, but will also help you recognize when you need to revise what you are doing and seek medical attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Me Out
Well, who doesn't love sitting down and writing a review about a book that tries to make your butt work better . . . anyway, despite the disclaimers about published medical advice regarding this book it helped me out a good deal and out of gratitude I can't help but give it anything less than 5 stars.

After spending several thousand dollars over several years to buy the pleasure of having doctors tell me "I don't know, I think we should do more tests" I frankly gave up on the medical establishment's ability to handle IBS cases. (I don't know if they are afraid of lawsuits or what, but none of the doctors I saw offered any useful advice or even tried a therapy or suggested a special diet or anything. Several friends and family members have reported the exact same pattern in modern medicine for IBS and other symptoms, thousands of dollars spent on inconclusive tests with no medical advice or relief. What's going on?? Doesn't eleventy years of supposedly the most stressful schooling in the world equip doctors with any knowledge beyond telling you that some scribbles in some boxes on test results mean absolutely nothing?)

This book does not offer a cure, as there is none for IBS yet apparently. However it tells you how to minimize symptoms in a holistic manner, and for me this actually worked quite well. Fiverelatively major changes that were included in this book worked for my particular case:

1.) Reduction of stress and balancing my life. This was harder than most people would probably like since for me it involved switching jobs, moving, and temporarily dipping into retirement savings, but quality of life has improved significantly and IBS symptoms reduced commensurately.

2.) Avoiding trigger foods, especially fatty foods, gassy foods, lactose containing foods, and spices. (Sadly, no more Thai and Mexican food, no more ice cream, no more lots of foods but it's worth it.)

3.) Increasing fiber intake. For me whole weat bread does upset my stomach, but a big bowl of Grape-Nuts with Soy Milk every day seems to get the job done.

4.) Eating three regular meals a day. Sometimes hard, especially when my normal response to having particularly bad IBS symptoms was to forgo eating, but this book explains the physiological science as to why this actually makes symptoms worse.

5.) Making exercise a regular habit. I finally feel healthy again.

A lot of this sounds like common-sense stuff, but this book explained why they would work (with other possible strategies for people with different symptoms) and helped me find which foods I could and could not tolerate. With this knowledge I was more committed to seeing the life changes through and with time they improved my condition more than I thought they would.

The sections on how to relax your muscles and your mind through breathing, little physical exercises, and mental techniques are also very helpful.

Since everyone's different I can't promise this book will help you. But with some experimentation this book drastically increased the speed and effectiveness of the lifestyle changes necessary to keep my IBS under control.

1-0 out of 5 stars SORRY THAT IPURCHASED THIS BOOK
I have bought Heather Van Vorous' books regarding IBS -- They are fantastic and I thought that buying THIS book would give additional help! The book is virtually useless. . . The biggest negative about this book was the advice on loading up on wheat fiber --which can cause horrible reactions in IBS patients! In addition, this team could not have researched the reaction of people with IBS to dairy products -- including yogurt -- Be smart and buy Heather Van Vorous' books -- they are simply wonderful and will help manage this condition!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
This is an excellent guide, giving many details of symptoms, causes, diet change needs, trigger foods, and stress reduction. I refer to it frequently. It has no gender bias that women are the major sufferers of IBS.

4-0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING TOPIC
I certainly do agree on some of the topics mentioned in this book.My understanding as reading this book and also attending at the time a Psycologist, is I think it narrows down yes with some foods you eat, I feel everyone is sensitive to certain foods than others, but what I found very interesting and had a hard time dealing with is to accept the fact that I had IBS.That's the first thing you have to accept. The second is STRESS, what major role that plays on the digestive system. You may not agree, but what I've learned through experience and dealing with stressful situations, yes I do believe this can play a Major Role.I was confinced that stress didn't have a role in this and that I had something wrong with me, even though all my test were coming back fine.I had to accept that I had IBS and handle stressful situations a different way.It could be things from the past, present, or the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Sport Psychologist's Handbook : A Guide for Sport Specific Performance Enhancement
With this book, I also had purchased the "Test Youe EQ : Find Out How Emotionally Intelligent You Really Are" and the "Counselling Athletes : Applying Reversal Theory".

Actually these books have been used by my son who are doing his Master Degree in the Psychology in Thailand (a small country in Southeast Asia). His aim is to go through the Sport Psychology Knowhow which is nothing in our Thailand at present. Not too many people know about what the Sport Psychology can do to their Emotional Enhancement and sports.

I had asked my son on what he get from these books, he told me that;

"Dear dad, all I can say is all the books are great and very useful. They become my bible for what I'm doing right now."

One thing I observe from my son is he is better in controlling his emotion and love his subject of "Psychology" much more than I have
expected before he entered this course. These books may contribute a great assistance to widenning his eyes and also his metal thinking.

Thank you for the writers, at least with your books, you help me guide a man to go for his dream. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be mandatory reading for therapists....
Adoption: Uncharted Waters... a fascinating and sometimes chilling depiction of how profoundly the experience of having lost one's mother can impact some adoptees. This is an important piece of literature that should be in the library of anyone who counsels or even loves an adoptee.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts through the politics of adoption
Using extreme examples, Kirschner forces us to face up to issues that potentially affect all adoptees. These are riveting tales, about murderers and parricides, about awful deeds, but ultimately they're about the pain of rejection, abandonment, and exclusion, and what they can do to a child already in distress. A great read, and a good introduction to Kirschner's breakthrough work on Adopteed Child Syndrome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lethal Lies and Fatal Fantasies:The Explosion of Cumulative Trauma of Rejection
Uncharted Waters is chilling and compelling and an important contribution to those interested in adoption. It invites its readers to explore the abysmal pit of worst-case scenario adoptions in terms of harm caused by adoptees as opposed to to them.

Why go there? What is Kirschner's purpose in dredging up these tales horrendous true crimes and the criminals who committed them? Is he a bleeding heart seeking to exonerate murderers by testifying on their behalf and writing their stories?

No more and no less than many have done in other similar situations: explore violent deviant behaviors that fit a pattern in an effort to find a causal connection that could be remediated.Writing with understanding and compassion, for those who committed heinous acts as well as society, Dr. Kirschner's goal is to prevent future pain and suffering.

Did adoption make them do it?No more than high school created the Columbine slaughters.Did secrets and lies about their origins, and feelings of abandonment contribute? Yes, just as teasing and taunting did for the Columbine shooters.

While the initial separation at birth - the "primal wound" is perhaps the foundation of creating Kirschner's identified cluster of behaviors known as Adopted Child Syndrome, it is clear that it is the conscious knowing of having been "given away" - rejected - that is at the heart of adoption pain and angst, and that it is exacerbated by secrets and lies about the reason for this early abandonment.

Yet, most adoptees deal with it all in socially acceptable ways: denial, people pleasing, rejecting-avoidance behaviors, self-directed anger/depression, or mild acting out within - or just pushing the limits of - legal and social limits.

So what makes some go "over the edge" into a dissociative disorder - the basis of his testimony in all the cases - not ACS? Kirschner is very much a realist and clearly agrees with Sarnoff Medick, whom he quotes as saying: "Natural-born killer may be created when both nature and nurture conspire to rob infants of two fundamental birthrights: a loving mother and a normal brain."

In each of the case studies in this book adoptees lost their first mothers. A few spent time in foster care and suffered an additional abandonment experience early in life. One was physically and emotionally abused.Four had the added burden of a biological sibling. One had an adopted sibling who was successfully reunited. Most experienced feelings of rejection in their dating and/or married lives. Two experienced having a child of theirs aborted (one had two girlfriends abort). One experienced the death of a parent - by suicide - another abandonment/rejection creating experience.

But the one common denominator of all of these adopted men whose rage turned to murder was the fact that all were lied to outright or by omission about their original parents and the reason they were relinquished fro adoption, and all had their adoption loss issues invalidated and ignored by family and professionals.

The lies, coupled with dissociative fantasizing about who their mothers were, and thus who they were...festered their anger into rage that erupted in one or many acts of murder. The taking of life...by those who felt that part of their lives were taken from them.

I was aware of murderous adoptees and Kirschner's work in the late 80's and wrote about both in The Dark Side of Adoption.

I read Uncharted Waters now, not just from the perspective as one interested in all things adoption, nor as an objective researcher and writer. I read it as the mother of a child who took out her murderous rage out on herself and noted that one of the commonalities in these case studies was suicidal ideation and/or attempts.

Kirschner points out several times that it is a sub-set of adoptees who suffer from Adopted Child Syndrome and only a sub-set of these who murder. I would think it a tremendous contribution to adoption literature for Dr. Kirschner to write another book about all the other ways ACS affects adoptees, other than turning them into murderers. The untold many - for which there are no statistics - who turn their rage inward, many of whom are written off as "accidents."

The final chapters on prevention and treatment are important and useful, but alas fell short of recommending open adoption and concrete help provided for clients suffering with a great passionate need to know. In each case in which Kirschner became involved after the fact of a violent crime, he demanded the defense search for the birth families, yet absence if the suggestion of search as a tool of prevention and treatment. The other missing piece is any mention of CUB or any indication that the vast majority of reunions are welcoming, even when stating: "Even a `bad' reunion in these [after the fact of a murder] cases, chancing a second rejection by the birth mother, would have been extremely helpful and therapeutic..." I have conducted searches on behalf of adoptive parents who saw their adolescent child's desperation. Concern that a rejection might cause further harm, can be alleviated by conducting the search and contact without his/her knowledge to test the water for acceptance.

This shortcoming aside, the book - as Kirschner's work - is a valuable contribution and is recommended reading.

Mirah Riben, author "shedding light on...The Dark Side of Adoption" (1988) and "The STORK MARKET: America's Multi-Billion Dollar Unregulated Adoption Industry" (2007)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in adoption Issues
Adoption:Uncharted Waters... a thoughtful, provocative, and well written book about adoptees who kill.David Kirschner accurately presents the psychological world of adopted people. His book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand what sows the seeds of violence in some of them. - Joe Soll, LCSW - psychotherapist, author of "Evil Exchange" and "Adoption Healing... a path to recovery."

4-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing, Easy Read!
This is a fascinating book: A clinical look at the pitfalls of adoption in the most basic of laymen's non-clinical terms.Examining how adoption can affect a child throughout his/her adult life, Dr. Kirshner tells us of some of the more (or less) notable criminal cases in which he participated where the defendant(s) were all adopted. (i.e.: Son of Sam; Joel Rifkin.) If you, or someone you know is thinking of adopting, or has already adopted a child, this book is a must! ... Read more
