Product Description
This book aims to demonstrate how forensic psychology contributes to police investigations, providing practical information about the type of reports provided by psychologists and behavioural advisors, and set within a broader theoretical context. It asks the question 'What do practitioners actually do when they provide advice for the police and the courts and how do they do it?' The contributors to the book are all experts in the field of offender profiling and behavioural investigative advice. The chapters provide valuable insights into particular case details, the ethical and legal consequences of advice, coverage of the relevant theoretical context, explanations for conclusions drawn, practical difficulties in preparing reports, potential pitfalls, and an account of how cases are resolved. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Psychological Profiling- It may after all be of help.
Crime Profiling originated in popualr writings of FBI Special Agents like Douglas and Ressler and caught the imagination of the world with Hollywood films like the 'Silence of the Lamb' and TV series like 'Profiliers', 'Cracker'. The last decade has seen acdemics attacking some of the fundamental postulates of the popular ideas on 'Offender Profiling". Today for each book advocating 'Offender Profiling' there is another book criticising 'Offender Profiling' and the battle lines were getting drawn with serious academics beginning to distance themselves from the Profiling Programme. As a practioner ( I work as a senior police officer in India) I was becoming cynical about salvaging anything from the initial promise of profiling as a helpful tool in investigating difficult crimes.
This book is the first serious attempt to bridge the gap and create a possible middle ground. It tells us the extent to which a criminal investigation can be enriched by inputs from serious academics and the manner in which such advice should be dealt with. I think it is a must-read for Police Officers and legal practioners around the world and should now show us the way to develop further collaboration between academics and practioners to make psychological profiling tenable and scientific.
The book avoids unnecessary academic jargons so typical of complex academic journals and is in the jenre of academic writings that are making a serious effort to reach out to practioners like me.
Great Job. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time and money
Very common sense information is basically all this book provides. That and not give any helpful information instead telling you to refer to state laws as they differ state to state. Don't waste your time or money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but...
I agree with most of the reviewers that this is a very well written book with lots of excellent information.But...Arguably, THE most important factor in being successful in private practice is having enough clients. As has been noted, there are many marketing issues that aren't addressed in any detail.Surprisingly, next to no information and suggestions are made about having a website, other than to have it done for you.To be fair, the book was published in 2005.Marketing has changed in the last several years, as have companies that let you easily create your own site. One thing I did find helpful were a listing of APA Division of Independent Treatment Guides.I also agree with another previous reviewer that the book would have been much better with more meat, rather than 75% of the book being various APA Guidelines, even though the APA is the publisher.Hopefully, this book will be updated and have much more concrete marketing suggestions and less appenices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!!!
This book discusses all of the ins and outs of developing your own practice.Few books tackle all of the practical issues and this book did a wonderful and thorough job. Why make these mistakes when you can learn from others? Great read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book in this area by far
This is a WONDERFUL book!I've been in full-time independent practice for many years but found this book a treasure -- everything from developing a creative business plan and finding an office (and attorney, and professional liability policy) to finding clients and referral sources to all the nuts and bolts of planning, setting up, maintaining, and growing a practice.Great strategies for avoiding problems (e.g., malpractice or ethics complaints; computer foul-ups; billing problems) and how to respond if troubles come. I especially liked the emphasis (and tips) on creating a practice that fits my own wants, needs, and values.Nothing else has been quite so practical in walking me through the steps of what needs to be done, including things I might overlook like self-care. I guess I agree with the review of "Barbara Finn, Licensed Psychologist" below but am trying to find some other way to say it!:)

1-0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed
I bought this book as a reference for a seminar and was very underimpressed.Though it's 421 pages, the last 306 pages are appendicies of 15 different APA guidelines for treating people of certain populations.Don't get me wrong, these guidelines are important to good practice, they are simply not what I was looking for in a book about thriving as a therapist.
The text of the book, it turns out, is about 112 pages of mildly to moderately useful information.I am returning my copy and looking for something useful as a reference. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars confusing and useless
tests were long and pointless and the scoring was confusing so your left guessing as to howexactly do you score yourself.it is not at all insightful..save your money..

1-0 out of 5 stars An unfortunate waste of money
I bought this book because I thought it'd be fun and interesting, but I was wrong. There were many tests which were interesting and I didn't mind taking the time to answer the forty to sixty questions. What bothered me was when I finished answering all the questions I was left completely confused. I'd find out my score for a test, but it didn't tell me if my score was a good thing or a bad thing. Instead it showed the results of other people, which I really didn't care about. I only wanted to know about my score, which I didn't get. I hope others were able to find this book helpful because I sure didn't.

2-0 out of 5 stars good tests, but too confusing for the "abnormal"
I found this book interesting, but depressing. I think the tests in the book are great. However, the book itself does not tell how to accurately interpret unusually high or low scores, those outside of the percentiles for normal college students.Since I didn't score often in the "normal" percentile range, I had no idea how to gauge if it meant I was wonderfully unique or terribly dysfunctional. Since the author is not even sure about the meanings of some of the tests in this book, I am equally unsure. I am interested in being psychologically healthier, but not always interested in being "normal." If someone has a better approach to helping the layman interpret psychological testingI would be happy to find out about it.
I would recommend this book to someone who wants to know if they have major problems, because if you do, you will probably score way outside the percentiles. And there are a few tests that may help you see how healthy you are, if you are.The great thing is that the tests appear to be real, and the test for measuring your level of anxiety is detailed, well explained, and informative. I think the romantic love test is very accurate as well.
Needless to say, I don't think this book will help you much in overcoming your "personal barriers to a better life" like it says in the misleading subtitle. It only shows you barriers.

3-0 out of 5 stars The first one was better!
I had bought the first book Louis Janda wrote in the personality test series: 'The Psychologist's Book of Self-Tests : 25 Love, Sex, Intelligence, Career, and Personality Tests...' and I think it was better. First of all I like the different tests in THIS book, they are pretty introspective. But I DID NOT like the way the tests were scored. It was at times hard to understand and keep tract of. I wanted to take the tests and learn the answer about myself. But even when I half figured out the scoring system and added the numbers up I couldn't tell by the scoring system whether my having a high/low score was good, or bad! I only give this a "3" instead of a "2" because they tests themselves were good, and pretty easy to take. Otherwise, if you're real good at math and have plenty of patience, you'll REALLY love this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Although educators are expected to bring about functional changes in the brain--the organ of human learning--they are given no formal training in the structure, function or development of the brain in formal or atypically developing children as part of their education. This book is organized around three conceptual themes: First, the interplay between nature (genetics) and nurture (experience and environment) is emphasized. Second, the functional systems of the brain are explained in terms of how they lead to reading, writing and mathematics and the design of instruction. Thirdly, research is presented, not as a finished product, but as a step forward within the field of educational neuropsychology. The book differs from neuropsychology and neuroscience books in that it is aimed at practitioners, focuses on high incidence neuropsychological conditions seen in the classroom, and is the only book that integratesboth brain researchwith the practice of effective literacy, and mathematics instruction of the general and special education school-aged populations. ... Product Description
Now available in paperback—a provocative new look at biology, evolution, and human behavior “as disturbing [as it is] fascinating” (Publishers Weekly).

Why are most neurosurgeons male and most kindergarten teachers female? Why aren’t there more women on death row? Why do so many male politicians ruin their careers with sex scandals? Why and how do we really fall in love? This engaging book uses the latest research from the field of evolutionary psychology to shed light on why we do the things we do—from life plans to everyday decisions. With a healthy disregard for political correctness, Miller and Kanazawa reexamine the fact that our brains and bodies are hardwired to carry out an evolutionary mission— an inescapable human nature that actually stopped evolving about 10,000 years ago. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money
Alan Miller and Satoshi Kanazawa are seemingly the worst kind of glib, shallow scientists possible. They spout off theories, find often just a single data point to support their theories, and then conclude that their theory is the only possible and reasonable explanation for the behavior or observation. Their grasp of history (and putting history into context) is also shallow and glosses over atrocities committed in the name of numerous religions over time.

I couldn't make it past Chapter 4 either. I expect a scientist to back up their findings with not just a random dissertation or data point, but with multiple studies all supporting the same conclusion. Otherwise, citing such data is no better than citing a personal story or analogy. Science only works when it is replicated; when it's not replicated, it's an un-verified finding. Such un-verified findings certainly shouldn't be the groundwork for a book you want others to take seriously.

Sadly, the authors' writing reflects their lack of objectivity. Time and time again, the authors appear to ignore the science, cherry-pick the evidence, and basically appear to engage in many behaviors characteristic not of science, but of personal beliefs. Which is a great way to keep one's career going or to start a new religion, but a horrible way to put research data into perspective to support what otherwise could have been an innovative and novel theory.

This book is a good purchase only if you want to understand how NOT to write a popular science book. Or if you want to read two authors trying to become the next Malcolm Gladwell, but failing spectacularly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting - but you need to have an open mind and not be easily offended to appreciated
A very interesting book aimed at a popular audience on the new and controversial field of Evolutionary Psychology. EP believes that much of human behavior is innate and genetically determined. In that regard, we are not that different from the rest of biological species. This position is not new (the debate of nurture versus nature is decades if not centuries old), but EP has many ingenious explanations of human behavior that conventional psychological theories that deny behavior has a genetical basis, can't provide. EP holds that much, if not almost all, of human behavior has the ultimate aim of spreading our genes - to have as much progeny as we can. But because of the obvious differences between males and females in that regard - a man can potentially have much more offspring than females, who therefore has to stand for quality over quantity - their mating strategies are different and so is much of their behavior. Not every explanation given by author Kanazawa is totally convincing, and many times he tries to pass good guesses as established scientific truths (and sometimes the explanations are not even believable at all - the part where the book tried to explain Islamic suicide bombers is particularly poor), but all in all, this book is very interesting and shows evolutionary psychology as far more grounded on truth than what he call the standard social science model - conventional psychology and sociology that deny evolution has any role in the way people behaves. Such position, Kanazawa convincingly shows, is completely untenable today in light of decades of scientific findings.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you like to consume BS, you will get your fill here.
A horrid book that was actually suggested by a T.A. of mine. Don't waste your time with this racist, sexist, poorly researched, bigoted excuses for a pop-science text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Agree with others - your warning is on p. 24
Luckily, I checked this book out of the local public library, so have wasted no money.I did not make it past the 4th chapter. While the much-discussed "blonde bombshell" theory was frustrating for its lack of evidence, I was thoroughly fed up by similarly blanket statements purported to be fact, such as "a preference for blue eyes seems both universal and undeniable."

One would expect such a confident statement to have several citations following it, pointing readers to multiple, rigorous studies that replicated the same findings, well, universally. No, there was just one article, published in 1978.THEN, Kanazawa continues by stating the only plausible explanation for this preference was suggested by an undergraduate student in one of her term papers! While undergraduates no doubt have the capability of developing new theories that are later proven true, a quick Google search revealed research in 2006 (while the author was writing his book) that suggested why blue-eyed men preferred blue-eyed women.Interestingly, in my brief skimming of the articles describing this research, none mentions that blue eyes are universally preferred.

I should have known to stop reading when the authors admitted that the "Savanna principle" - upon which much of the book is based - is "not yet part of the established literature" and "its implications have yet to be subjected to rigorous experimental testing" (p. 24).

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought about this for a while, never seen it written about -- highly recommended.
I don't know how or why but I've always intuitively "sensed" some of the things that the authors write about in this book -- e.g. that it can't be possible that all men are simple a** holes and that's why they cheat, that the pursuit and acquisition of women seems to be the main motivator of men, that married men lose their drive and accomplish less than their unmarried counterparts. This book is outstanding and hits the nail on the head in explaining why men and women behave the way they do.I noticed that most of the negative reviews are from women, probably feminists that feel somehow insulted by this book.I'm not sure why, the author makes it clear from the beginning that the book is not about good vs. bad or right vs. wrong, but rather simply about objective observations and irrefutable facts.

Highly recommended. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this book in order to complete a continuing education requirement as a psychologist. The book is ok, perhaps better for a beginner. The test was totally unrelated to the material in the book, and that is what disappointed me so much. I ended up not reading the book, taking the test anyway and passing. So, if you buy this book for continuing ed, look out.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful ethics resource
I am using this book to study for the Ethics portion of my preliminary examinations, and have found it to be a pretty helpful resource in terms of thinking through ethics issues. Sometimes the examples and questions are a little silly, but for the most part the book portrays realistic-sounding vignettes that could come up in clinical practice and teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for practicing and aspiring psychologists
Now in an updated second edition wholly rewritten to be made consistent with updated standards of the newly revised APA Ethics Code (2002), Ethics In Plain English: An Illustrative Casebook For Psychologists is a resource especially intended for psychologists. Describing how to apply the principles of the Ethics Code of the American Psychological Association to ethical dilemmas commonly encountered. From issues of privacy and confidentiality, to regulations concerning advertising and public statements, to standards for education, training, research and publication, and much more, Ethics In Plain English breaks down the required expectations in to practical and easily understandible terms. Gray boxes highlight points that go straight to the heart of the matters discussed, such as "Never pay, give gifts to, or compensate a newspaper reporter, radio or TV reporter, Internet journalist, or any other journalist in the print or electronic media in return for an interview endorsing or promoting your work in a news story", "If you review or screen the work of others, resist the temptation to use the newly submitted information for any purpose whatsoever", and "Enough is enough! Do not provide endless therapy if the patient does not need it, is not being helped in some way, or, even worse, is being harmed by continuing to see you (e.g. financially, by fostering overdependence, or some other way)". An absolute must-read for practicing and aspiring psychologists.

This book develops an intuitive understanding of IRT principles through the use of graphical displays and analogies to familiar psychological principles. It surveys contemporary IRT models, estimation methods, and computer programs. Polytomous IRT models are given central coverage since many psychological tests use rating scales.

Ideal for clinical, industrial, counseling, educational, and behavioral medicine professionals and students familiar with classical testing principles, exposure to material covered in first-year graduate statistics courses is helpful. All symbols and equations are thoroughly explained verbally and graphically.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Drawn Out History of Psychology
(This review refers to the second edition.) The Great Psychologists is just what the title makes it out to be. The book is an account of the evolution of psychology by examining eminent figures in the times leading up to the development psychology and the men who later devoted themselves to scientific work in the subject. Each chapter examines an individual, a well explained overview of his thinkings, and the cultural and historical contexts in which he worked. The biographies of each person are detailed and seem to be included more for history than science. One gets a definite sense of how psychology came to be. A good background in the subject would be of benefit. This edition is copyrighted in the late 1960s and thus does not go beyond this point in time. It is an old graduate level textbook from when my father was receiving his doctorate. The last chapter very much dates the book. The wording at times can be verbose, and the book itself is very long. The last two chapters seem to lose the reader's interest as the last one especially is a long list of names and fields of study. More current editions of this book would probably be of much more value.

The last two chapters seem to lose the reader's interest as the last one especially is a long list of names and fields of study. More current editions of this book would probably be of much more value.

Product Description
Extensively revised and expanded, this third edition of Neuropsychology for Psychologists, Health Care Professionals, and Attorneys provides a clear, concise, and comprehensive discussion of neuropsychology, outlining its purpose, use, and historical development. It covers the anatomy of the brain, a wide variety of neurobehavioral disorders, comprehensive neuropsychological examinations, ecological validity, and the strengths and limitations of many widely used neuropsychological and diagnostic tests. Maintaining a high degree of detail and sophistication, this book enables an in-depth comprehension of the topic even by those with no prior knowledge in this area.

Beginning with a definition and overview of neuropsychology and the role of the neuropsychologist, this third edition expands the section on neuroanatomy to describe subcortical and ganglionic structures, cerebellum and white fiber tracts, and the pathophysiology of neurobehabehavioral disorders. It covers mild and severe traumatic brain injuries, postconcussion syndrome, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), frontal lobe disorders, executive dysfunction, and seizure disorders. The authors introduce new findings on age-related cognitive changes, neuropsychological and physiological correlates of PTSD, Alzheimer's and late onset dementia.New chapters include malingering of neuropsychological deficits and deception, the limitations of neuropsychological tests, and how to critique the interpretation of neuropsychological test data and reports.

Emphasizing a systematic approach to neuropsychological testing and assessment, this book evaluates a wide range of neuropsychological and neurodiagnostic tests in terms of their strengths, limitations, validity, and reliability. It critically examines different methods of test scoring and interpretation discussing the ecological validity of neuropsychological testing and the extent to which neuropsychological tests can detect neurobehavioral deficits and brain damage. The author provides numerous illustrative case studies and six sample medico-legal reports along with three appendices offering a glossary of terms, a list of widely prescribed medications, and a quick-reference summary of the tests detailed in the book. ... Product Description
This is the story of Abu Ghraib that you haven't heard, told by the soldier sent by the Army to restore order and ensure that the abuses that took place there never happen again.

In April 2004, the world was shocked by the brutal pictures of beatings, dog attacks, sex acts, and the torture of prisoners held at Abu Ghraib in Iraq. As the story broke, and the world began to learn about the extent of the horrors that occurred there, the U.S. Army dispatched Colonel Larry James to Abu Ghraib with an overwhelming assignment: to dissect this catastrophe, fix it, and prevent it from being repeated.

A veteran of deployments to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and a nationally well-known and respected Army psychologist, Colonel James's expertise made him the one individual capable of taking on this enormous task. Through Colonel James's own experience on the ground, readers will see the tightrope military personnel must walk while fighting in the still new battlefield of the war on terror, the challenge of serving as both a doctor/healer and combatant soldier, and what can-and must-be done to ensure that interrogations are safe, moral, and effective.

At the same time, Colonel James also debunks many of the false stories and media myths surrounding the actions of American soldiers at both Abu Ghraib and GuantanamoBay, and he reveals shining examples of our men and women in uniform striving to serve with honor and integrity in the face of extreme hardship and danger.

An intense and insightful personal narrative, Fixing Hell shows us an essential perspective on Abu Ghraib that we've never seen before. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Military Psychology at it's best.
Joseph (Dallas, TX)
Dr James delivers a captivating account of his experiences and challenges while leading mental health services at Gitmo and Abu G.His efforts to oversee such a difficult set of circumstances should be not only respected but also commended. In his book, Dr James takes you along with him while doing late night rounds at Gitmo and Abu G.In his no nonsense approach, he lets the reader experience some of the sights, sounds, smells, and irrationality of his tour of duty.He also highlights some of the courage, terror and patriotism displayed by some of this nation's youngest leaders.Well done Col James.

1-0 out of 5 stars Whitewash!
For those who are unaware of the backstory behind this book, there is strong evidence that Dr. James actually FACILLITATED torture at both Abu Grahib and Guantanamo, and deserves to be prosecuted for war crimes. This book is a whitewash, in the long tradition of "CYA," and has been greeted with incredulity and ridicule by many of his professional colleagues. One, Dr. Trudy Bond, is suing his licencing board in the attempt to force an ethics investigation, which so far has not been forthcoming. All of which seemingly makes a mockery of professional ethics in the field of psychology: if a psychologist who participates in torture is not condemned and expelled from the profession... what does one have to do?? Was not all this established law after the Nuremburg Trials?

1-0 out of 5 stars Col. Larry James aka Capt. John Smith
It would be hard to take this book seriously if it weren't for the fact that the author is now Dean of the School of Professional Psychology at Wright State University. (One wonders what they were thinking.) Here is one of my favorite excerpts from the book, although lesbian-with-assault-rifle-between-her-legs runs a close second:

"Sex was a complicating factor in much of our work at Abu Graib. I came to know several single women at Abu Graib who got pregnant, received adverse legal action, and were sent home. Private Jeni Nelson was a short, fat, seriously ugly young lady. She looked as though she was crying all the time. Neverthless, she got a boyfriend, got pregnant, and was promptly sent home by her company commander. Did she do it on purpose to get out of Abu Graib? Probably, and I'm sure she wasn't the first."

For more examples of misogyny, see pp. 162-164, and for homophobia/lesbian stereotyping that reads like a bad letter to Penthouse magazine, see 153-156 and passim.

Lest I be charged with selectively quoting, let me state that this book is about James, not about the significant issues of torture and interrogationwhich it purports to analyze. It is a bloated, fantasy memoir that reads like Captain John Smith's adventures with Pocahontas or the Turkish princess.

Subjects like this deserve serious scholarly treatment. I am sympathetic to the psychological and ethical dilemmas of the interrogators, and indeed a family member with whom I am close was an interrogator in the army, though not at Abu Ghraib or Gitmo. To understand this most complex subject we do not need self-serving epics or the undermining of our troops by offering up misogynistic narratives. It's difficult to say James is homophobic as that word is typically used. He likes gay people, even the prancing queens who manage to learn how to shoot, because, by god, they are putting their lives on the line. He likes the lesbian she-males who, cigarette-smoking and gun-toting, make him feel safe, and maybe just a little aroused.

Amazon needs to hurry up and let prospective buyers search this book. See for yourself what bunk it is!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fixing the Hell of Guantanamo & Abu Ghraib
Fixing Hell: An Army Psychologist Confronts Abu Ghraib by Col. (Ret.) Dr. Larry C. James, Ph.D. is a nonfiction book about how one army psychologist takes on the task of cleaning up after public relations nightmares at detention centers in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Abu Ghraib, Iraq.

Dr. James is sent to reform these prison/detention centers after scandals break out regarding the treatment of prisoners and detainees. After conducting research and reviewing the Stanford Prison Experiment, which details how otherwise "good" people can commit atrocities in a prison system, Dr. James heads to Cuba.

He outlines some ground rules before he gets to Guantanamo Bay. One of the main rules he sets forth is that leaders must be seen and present. James walks throughout the complex at different hours of the day, even at 2 a.m. He finds that some of the guards on duty in the wee hours are asleep at their posts, while others claim to have never seen a colonel or other military leaders.

Dr. James leaves Guantanamo only to be sent shortly thereafter to Abu Ghraib following the highly public denigration of Iraqi prisoners at the detention center. Soldiers at the prison disrobed prisoners, posed them naked in a human pyramid, and shot photos of the incidents, which were later plastered all over the news. As a psychologist, Dr. James was sent to the detention center to clean up the facility and establish protocols to prevent further incidents.

The audio of this book was well read and engaging. It certainly kept our attention during our early morning commutes, and it was intriguing to get an insider's look at the military's psychology department and protocols. My husband enjoyed the details about how Dr. James remedied the problems at Abu Ghraib and the insight those details provided about the actual facts of the situation.

However, the last chapters of the book slowed down the flow of the book for us. Dr. James offers a great deal of explanation about how the media played up the Abu Ghraib incidents and printed misinformation that maligned the reputations of fellow psychologists and himself. While we understood his need to set the record straight, the information was unnecessary given the timeline he issued throughout the book. Any reports placing him or his colleagues at the detention centers during the scandalous incidents could easily be dismissed.

With that being said, anyone interested in military or war history will enjoy this insider's look at the Iraq War, Abu Ghraib, and the military's psychology unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all Army psychologists
I bought this book from Dr. James at a reading he did at my school. His story is very powerful as he discusses his process of working within a broken system. The role of the psychologist in today's military is not always clear and Dr. James' story helps to illustrate the struggle one goes through when trying to define their role to oneself and to others.

Anyone considering joining the military as a psychologist should read this book. This book will not give you a clear cut answer on how to balance being both a soldier and psychologist but it may help you in your process ofdeciding for yourself how to balance the two roles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Beginning
My 21-year-old son has IBS so badly he had to come home mid-semester to be helped by us.He was in a bad way.We got him tested and he doesn't have celiac sprue, etc.He was diagnosed with IBS when he was 18, but has resisted the idea of changing his diet or ways of dealing with stress. Now he knows he has to, but it's all very overwhelming for him, especially since he's been so sick, and his college situation makes dealing with it difficult.I needed a book to give to him that was clear, supportive, and broke down what he needed to do into simple steps.I ordered eight different books about IBS from Amazon and gave them all a quick read. This is the only one I gave to my son. He's back at college now after having dropped several classes. He's starting to read this book and says it's very helpful.I am so grateful to have sent him back with a book I think will help him and that covers the whole process of trying to manage his disease.

What other reviewers have said about recommending wheat products as a bad idea may be true, but we've had our son tested and it is not a problem for him.Mainly he needs to eat smaller, more frequent meals, eat more soluble fiber and healthier foods, and deal with stress in a better way. This book covers these very clearly.Since he tends to ignore my advice having this said by this book and his doctors might eventually get through to him.I also got him a book on Cognitive Behavior Therapy that he says is helping, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars glance first before buying ANY book on a disorder
As any medical professional knows, no illness is categorized by symptoms XYZ alone. There are always variations and this book adjusts to them quite well.I am sorry that previous reviewers didn't glance through the book first and pay attnetion to their own bodies and what works for them.

This books is also wonderful in that it doesn't lable IBS as being "all in your head".It is very objective in describing the many factors that may be causing your IB symptoms.Things like stress, food, fiber, and possible other food triggers.

This book is also short, and doesn't go into a list of supplements you should be taking. It focuses on how to best help yourself, rather than telling you to do #1, #2, or #3, as every body is slightly different. It helps you focus on your symptoms, and what may help to alleviate them.

It is important to understand that IBS in THIS country is often related to the Type A lifestyle, and often times modifing this (by reducing stress, focusing on quality of food choices) often helps. However, things like lactose intolerance and celiac sprue are SEPERATE. You may be lactose intolerant, and by eliminating lactose from your diet you will be fine. However, that may not be a problem for every person suffering from IBS. Same thing with celiac sprue--just because you have IBS does not mean you have celiac sprue. It's VERY important to be honest with your symptoms and treat yourself accordingly.

As a medical professional I believe in western medicine, but I also believe that people need to take responsibility for helping themselves. There is no magic pill or magic cure for everything.Sometimes you have to be patient and go through a little trial and error. This book will help you do just that, but will also help you recognize when you need to revise what you are doing and seek medical attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Me Out
Well, who doesn't love sitting down and writing a review about a book that tries to make your butt work better . . . anyway, despite the disclaimers about published medical advice regarding this book it helped me out a good deal and out of gratitude I can't help but give it anything less than 5 stars.

After spending several thousand dollars over several years to buy the pleasure of having doctors tell me "I don't know, I think we should do more tests" I frankly gave up on the medical establishment's ability to handle IBS cases. (I don't know if they are afraid of lawsuits or what, but none of the doctors I saw offered any useful advice or even tried a therapy or suggested a special diet or anything. Several friends and family members have reported the exact same pattern in modern medicine for IBS and other symptoms, thousands of dollars spent on inconclusive tests with no medical advice or relief. What's going on?? Doesn't eleventy years of supposedly the most stressful schooling in the world equip doctors with any knowledge beyond telling you that some scribbles in some boxes on test results mean absolutely nothing?)

This book does not offer a cure, as there is none for IBS yet apparently. However it tells you how to minimize symptoms in a holistic manner, and for me this actually worked quite well. Fiverelatively major changes that were included in this book worked for my particular case:

1.) Reduction of stress and balancing my life. This was harder than most people would probably like since for me it involved switching jobs, moving, and temporarily dipping into retirement savings, but quality of life has improved significantly and IBS symptoms reduced commensurately.

2.) Avoiding trigger foods, especially fatty foods, gassy foods, lactose containing foods, and spices. (Sadly, no more Thai and Mexican food, no more ice cream, no more lots of foods but it's worth it.)

3.) Increasing fiber intake. For me whole weat bread does upset my stomach, but a big bowl of Grape-Nuts with Soy Milk every day seems to get the job done.

4.) Eating three regular meals a day. Sometimes hard, especially when my normal response to having particularly bad IBS symptoms was to forgo eating, but this book explains the physiological science as to why this actually makes symptoms worse.

5.) Making exercise a regular habit. I finally feel healthy again.

A lot of this sounds like common-sense stuff, but this book explained why they would work (with other possible strategies for people with different symptoms) and helped me find which foods I could and could not tolerate. With this knowledge I was more committed to seeing the life changes through and with time they improved my condition more than I thought they would.

The sections on how to relax your muscles and your mind through breathing, little physical exercises, and mental techniques are also very helpful.

Since everyone's different I can't promise this book will help you. But with some experimentation this book drastically increased the speed and effectiveness of the lifestyle changes necessary to keep my IBS under control.

1-0 out of 5 stars SORRY THAT IPURCHASED THIS BOOK
I have bought Heather Van Vorous' books regarding IBS -- They are fantastic and I thought that buying THIS book would give additional help! The book is virtually useless. . . The biggest negative about this book was the advice on loading up on wheat fiber --which can cause horrible reactions in IBS patients! In addition, this team could not have researched the reaction of people with IBS to dairy products -- including yogurt -- Be smart and buy Heather Van Vorous' books -- they are simply wonderful and will help manage this condition!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
This is an excellent guide, giving many details of symptoms, causes, diet change needs, trigger foods, and stress reduction. I refer to it frequently. It has no gender bias that women are the major sufferers of IBS. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Start to British Mystery Series
Part cozy, part police procedural Into the shadows by Shirley Wells is a solid British mystery with one serial killer, several victims, and lots of suspects. This first book in the series featuring forensic psychologist Jill Kennedy and DCI Max Trentham is set in the small English village of Kelton Bridge where Jill, formerly a police profiler, has retreated from assisting the police force and is now writing self-help books.Max, her ex-boyfriend, has just been promoted to Detective Chief Inspector of the region so, when the vicar's wife is found at home in Kelton Bridge with her throat slit and her son holding the murder weapon, as senior investigating officer Max is under pressure to close the case quickly.Meanwhile, the serial killer known as Valentine is still on the loose after four years of fruitless pursuit by both Max and Jill.To add to the tension, Jill has been receiving anonymous messages that appear to come from Valentine. There is plenty of mystery crammed into this hybrid crime novel as the bodies and suspects multiply.A solid series debut from 2007, Into the Shadows creates a strong foundation that can grow in several directions.I look forward to reading the next three books to see if they live up to the promise of this first one:A Darker Side (2008), When Petals Fall (2009), and The Broken Circle (2010).

4-0 out of 5 stars Forensic Psychologist
Into the Shadows (2007) introduces Jill Kennedy, a forensic psychologist who has left her job and London to write a book in the village of Kelton Bridge, Lancashire, England. Jill's profile helped the police arrest Rodney Hill for a series of murders, but the murders continued after his suicide in jail. Jill is determined to have nothing more to do with the case, but Max Trentham, a detective chief inspector and her ex-lover, is sent to Kelton when the local vicar's wife is murdered. Max tells Jill the police need her, and Jill begins to suspect that the serial killer, called Valentine from his habit of carving hearts into the skin of his victims, is stalking her. Once she rejoins the police, Jill suspects that Valentine may live somewhere in the rural community she now lives in. Though Jill ignores some obvious clues to the identity of the killer, the closed set of suspects allows the suspense to build.
