The author relies on constant example stories to try to dumb down the subject.Numerous mentions of what will be covered later is certain to distract you until you forget where the irrelevant stories were taking you. My head is still spinning.

5-0 out of 5 stars NLP
For Dummies series is brilliant. I have now got CBT for dummies and NLP for dummies. Both are easy reading, you can pick them up and open at any page. No jargon, anyone can understand the concepts in both books. I have used them to inform my Mental Health student nurses about the different approaches to treatment of depression, anxiety etc.
As I was a first timer on Amazon I was a little apprehensive about ordering 'on-line' and not absolutely sure I was going to get the goods ordered. However, they were quick to deliver, cheaper than the high street, I will not hesitate to order 'on-line' from Amazon in the future. ... Read more

Product Description
If you could remember your own potty training, you’d probably recall a time filled with anxiety and glee, frustration and a sense of accomplishment, triumphal joy and shamed remorse. You’d remember wanting so much to make mommy and daddy happy, and at the same time to make them pay for being so darned unreasonable. And you’d recall feeling incredibly grown up once you got it right. Maybe if we could remember our own potty training, it wouldn’t be so tough when it came our turn to be the trainers. But as it is, most of us feel like we can use all the expert advice and guidance we can get.

Potty Training For Dummies is your total guide to the mother of all toddler challenges. Packed with painless solutions and lots of stress-reducing humor, it helps you help your little pooper make a smooth and trauma-free transition from diapers to potty. You’ll discover how to:

  • Read the signs that your tot is ready
  • Motivate your toddler to want to give up diapers
  • Kick off potty training on the right foot
  • Foster a team approach
  • Deal with setbacks and pee and poop pranks
  • Make potty training a loving game rather than a maddening ordeal

Mother and daughter team, Diane Stafford and Jennifer Shoquist, MD separate potty-training fact from fiction and tell you what to expect, what equipment you’ll need, and how to set the stage for the big event. They offer expert advice on how to:

  • Choose the right time
  • Use a doll to help model behavior
  • Say the right things the right way
  • Reinforce success with praise and rewards
  • Switch to training pants
  • Get support from relatives
  • Cope with special cases
  • Train kids with disabilities

And they offer this guarantee: “If your child is still in diapers when he makes the football team or gets her college degree, you can send him or her off to us for a weekend remedial course—and ask for a refund of the cost of this book.” ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What's so funny?
Ugh.. worst book ever. I wanted sensible, practical advice on how to begin toilet training my 2-year-old daughter. Instead, I got a book that belongs in the "humor" section! I think Dave Barry could have given better advice!

1-0 out of 5 stars Unreadable
The six-page introduction should have tipped me off. I shouldn't need instructions on how to read a book.

The "For Dummies" series was supposed be titled "FROM Dummies," but they got it wrong because they're dumb. This book reads like a pile of pos-it notes bound together, and I think it was written by a teenage girl who dots her I's with hearts. It's just a bunch of corny jokes and cartoons (yes! really! cartoons!).

I got three paragraphs into chapter one (of 21!) and emailed the book store asking about their return policy. I've learned more from cereal boxes than I will ever learn from this thing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hey Dummies...stick to software & cooking, stay away from the potty
This book is just as useless as the Pull-Ups® Big Kid® Central: Potty Training Success DVD thatis given away for free. You can't teach logic to a young toddler who hasn't fully gained control of their bladder. Bottom line, terrible twos or trying threes...the child will pee or poop when he/she is ready.

We had the tearsheet on our fridge avidly awaiting each milestone our daughter reached in hopes of getting her there. Our greatest success came with a potty chair (against my own desire), a seat for the toilet, and potty books for her too read. She finally connected with a female character in one of the books and that sold her on the toilet. I assume that was it since shortly thereafter she used the potty on her own. She only called us over to brag about the achievement.

Stick with books for your kids, not for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars ick
I assumed this book was a general one on all types of potty training. In fact it is one-sided and just a manual on the intensive boot-camp style of training. I bought the Everything Potty Training Book at the same time and found it to be shorter, better written, and includes detailed instruction on four different methods.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Very informative with lots of good ideas.this book is very readable and you can start it as you start training. ... Read more

Product Description
Why is it so difficult to break away from the kind of existence that is based on having - gluttonous, conspicuous consumption - versus a life that is truly englightened and satisfying? Many unconscious factors come into play when individuals, even a whole society, stray into a superficial and false way of life. As Erich Fromm puts it in this posthumous publication, ours is "a life between having and being." The alternative states of having and being, as basic orientations of our lives and character, were subjects Fromm confronted in "To Have or to Be?" and "The Art of Being". The present work complements these texts with unpublished lectures, interviews, and apercus to lift us out of a life of passivity into one of creative joy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A First Rate Introduction to Fromm
Rainer Funk brings together the most lucid and poignant passages from Fromms oeuvre. The chapters are concise and the ideas are cogently presented. In Fromm's humanistic writings and critiques one, of course, finds references to Marx and Freud. However, one can equally recognize the insights of Heidegger, Nietzsche and even the mystic traditions of Buddhism, Taoism, Judaism and Christianity. Fromm's insights on capitalism and the 'having' mode of being are incredibly insightful and should offer the reader a great deal of reflection, especially in context with today's consumerism.Yet, in contrast, Fromm offers suggestions to free oneself from the limited and pernicious sensibilities of materialism and pecuniary greed. This collection will be an excellent complement to Marx, Veblen and Marcuse, and an indispensible introduction to Fromm and the Frankfurt school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Fromm compilation
This compilation of Fromm's writing, speeches, and interviews surrounding the topic of "having" versus "being" was very well compiled. Editor Funk takes relative material throughout Fromm's career andorganizes it into a flowing, readable format; Not to mention the amazinginsight Fromm covers when addressing this pertinent concept. Anyone seekingan alternative vision of how to live life more fully, and morehumanistically should read this, as well as the rest of Fromm's writings. He was a genius. ... Read more

Product Description
"What do you have to be depressed about?" Bet you've heard that one before. Or how about, "You're depressed? Just get over it!" Easier said than done, right? Or here's a favorite, "They have a pill for that now, you know."

Unfortunately, such naïve armchair psychology rarely works for someone suffering from the very real plight of depression. All it does is seek to trivialize depression and characterize depressed people as "whiners" who have nothing better to do than to "complain about their lives." But the truth is, depression is a very real problem. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that, on any given day, 121 million people worldwide suffer from depression. And depression rates continue to increase – for example, kids exhibit depression at nearly ten times the rate of previous generations. Theories abound as to why depression rates are increasing, but regardless of the cause, this scourge continues to rob its victims of happiness, joy, and the capacity to give and receive love.

So why Depression For Dummies, when there's already a glut of self-help books on the market peddling so-called cures and remedies for depression? Because this book satisfies the need for a straight-talking, no-nonsense resource on depression. The only agenda of Depression For Dummies is to present you with the facts on depression and explain the options for dealing with it. Rest assured, this is no infomercial in a yellow and black cover.

Here's just a sampling of what you'll find in Depression For Dummies:

  • Demystifying the types of depression
  • Discovering what goes on in the body of a depressed person
  • Detecting and diagnosing depression
  • Seeking help through therapy and medication
  • Modifying depressed behavior and solving life's headaches
  • Dealing with depression resulting from grief and relationship issues
  • Cutting through the hype of alternative treatments for depression
  • Moving beyond depression: Avoiding relapses and pursuing a happy life
  • Top Ten lists on getting rid of a your bad mood and helping your kids and other family members out of depression

So, whatever your level of depression – whether you suffer from occasional bouts or you find yourself seriously debilitated by depression – Depression For Dummies can give you the insight and tools you need to once again find enjoyment and happiness in life. All it takes is one step. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid Name!!
I can't believe they actually named the book "Depression for Dummies". Is that really the message we want to send to someone who is depressed? Stupid title for what ended up being an egg-headed solution to a problem that really can't be solved. The dummy is the guy who thought this book was a good idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Depression for Dummies
This is an excellent book in teaching you what depression is all about and the various types of help that is out there (from self-help to doctors). It is easy to read and I recommend it for anyone who has depression or knows someone with depression.

2-0 out of 5 stars Depression for Dummies
While I know that the title of this book is not to be considered condescending, and the authors preface that in the beginning pages of the book. However, it does seem to border on the line of "making light" of a very complicated and debilitating desease.I'm sure it's important for those in a depressive state and/or those living with someone who is depressed to understand how the "depression got there".Whether it's a concern that they've done something to bring this on or the common characteristic most men share of "wanting to fix it".However, the depressed person while in the true abyss of their depression, is not interested in how or why, we just want to know what to do to return to the normal, if there is such a state, predepression person we once were. This is another book I'm having a hard time finishing. So far, the good information I've received from this book has overshadowed the parts that seem to lead me astray in my voyage of overcoming my depressive state. I expect to finish reading the book, possibly omitting parts I don't find particularly helpful at this time in my life, probably to read at another step in my recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful introduction to depression
This is a comforting, easy to understand, practical book that is especially good for people who have just been diagnosed or parents with children who've been diagnosed. In a friendly, non-threatening style, the authors describe how to identify the symptoms of depression, lay out the possible treatment options, and offer instructions on how to find the help needed.I especially like the section on alternative treatments for depression. The Resources section is also valuable, with leads to books, websites, and organizations with local chapters such as NAMI.

    Product Description
This classic work by psychologist and social philosopher Eric Fromm builds upon his previous popular book To Have or to Be? The Art of Being teaches us to avoid the tantalizing illusions of our consumer-driven world by learning to function as a whole person from a state of inner completeness or being. The transition from an identity of having to being creates a state of enlightened psychological and spiritual happiness. Fromm observes that the modern person is less a self-reflective being than a composite of data promoted by the mass media, and he encourages us to pursue true self-awareness beyond simple political, ideological, and religious clichés. By learning to be centered in the self, the individual is less swayed by the endless pressures and dissatisfactions of the culture of consumerism. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book with superior information. A must read.
I have given this book to all my closest friends. I wish everyone will receive what I received which was a different perspective on how to live and how to think. This is an exercise in breathing, reading and concentrating. Each time I read through a chapter I learn a little more about the author, about life and about myself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book if you take it for what it is and is not.
"Ask does the desire for x or y enrich your life?" That is about as close to a one line summary of the book that I can give. The main focus though is to set up having and being as two separate and opposed motivations for human life. Although it should come as no surprise as this was primarily a chapter from To Have or To Be that was omitted for reasons he discusses at the beginning.

It needs to be said first off that this is NOT a self help book. Fromm offers no answers on what one should do to enrich their lives, but rather with great care diagnoses how we think. His task is merely to illuminate us to the disease, not prescribe relief. So this is for the individual looking for different questions, not direction. Although he would certainly advocate a life tuned towards being and not having, what one must do to attain this is never addressed.

Fromm draws heavily on his varied background in psychology, sociology, and philosophy to make his case. His skill as a writer and researcher is finding ways for the ideas of these disciplines to fit together; with each offering a little piece to the overall puzzle. From Buddhism Fromm borrows ideas of suffering, from Marx a critique of capitalism, from Freud pathologies of the mind. From each of these viewpoints he approaches the same central notion of having vs. being. With each approach merely a different flavor of the same issue.

Ultimately is there anything here which cannot be found elsewhere? No. But for the individual who loves to question and will never read Marx's 1844 Manuscripts, Buddhist writings, or Freudian literature; this is a great (although selected) taste of their ideas without getting caught up on the baggage that usually comes with reading each individually.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should Be Required Reading
Erich Fromm's depiction of what it means to be, to live, is fascinating. His work is always interesting and chock-full of significance about issues that are rarely discussed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some very interesting ideas mixed with some bizarre notions
For the first 3/4ths of the book, it was unclear to me whether Fromm was a Socialist or a Libertarian and that is a great sign of a balanced presentation of an idea.Yet, eventually, it became clear that he wasn't criticizing Marx in some of his statements, he was apologizing for him. This piece, excluded from another volume, presents a number of fascinating ideas like power that things have over most of our lives. We are slaves (unknowlingly) to our possessions because we must have the latest gadget or trinket. In essence society is running our lives, whether we feel free or not. This would be bad, but Fromm doesn't offer another option to our capitalist system, instead, we're to suppose that any of the failed communist societies would be a better, more artful way of living.

After making a solid case for the art of being in contrast to the ugliness of having, Fromm then describes some bizarre analogies that reveal a bitter anti-capitalist mindset.Using Freud as his crutch, the author describes a link between gold and feces, implying that we are all working for caca. Then he makes a lame attempt at linking money-hoarders to impotence.

It's a decent read and Fromm seems to be a smart cookie, though his ideas are shaded by a seemingly irrational hated toward capitalism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adventures in being.
Meister Eckart once asked, "How can anyone live without being instructed in the art of living and dying?"Examining what it means to truly live, psychologist and social philosopher, Eric Fromm (1900-80) drafted the manuscript of this book as a supplement and expansion to his book, TO HAVE OR TO BE.This book, which is somewhat uneven, is not so much a how-to book on how to live life more meaningfully, but an insightful exploration into the theories of escaping the "shackles" of greed and illusion that prevent us from realizing our full potentials for self-awareness, well being, independence, and the capacity to love.

The "average man today," Fromm observes, thinks very little for himself, and his capacity to concentrate has become "a rarity" (pp. 44, 89).We are a composite of data presented by schools and mass media, and we know very little from our own observations and thinking. We live our lives by the political, idealogical, and religious cliches that appeal most to our character and social class.Fromm encourages his reader to avoid the false paths ("shams") in the field of human enlightenment, and to also avoid "trivial talk." Instead, we should pursue self-awareness through the difficult practices of concentration, meditation, psychoanalysis, and breaking through the consumer/property structure of our existence.

I found this book very interesting.I am not divorced nor married, but the book provides a wealth of information to know before entering into marriage.Protecting oneself is key and I feel Divorce for Dummies opened my eyes to what I did not realize.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers Many Topics
This book hit on many topics and is a good reference book to use throughout the various stages of your divorce. Touches on a wide variety of things and generally answers some questions you might have. Some advice in this book I did not see in other divorce books such as what to do about debt in both of your names. Outlines what to do about credit card debt in both names as well as mortgage debt in both names. Mortgage debt is harder to get out of your name even if your spouse is awarded the asset. You are both still liable for mortgage debt until it is paid off or refinanced. Even if your divorce decree says that your former spouse is responsible for paying it. Book tells you how to communicate with credit card companies in regard to protecting your credit.
This book is worth reading because you will probably learn at least a few things you did not previously know. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, useful and certainly needed
It seems like a no-brainer that people should say please and thank you and excuse me, but how often do we all have the opposite experience? This book covers the basics of etiquette along with other scenarios that you might not run into but once in a lifetime..Ways to handle important business dinners/meeting, gifting, disagreements, and more are covered in an easy and readable format. No boring lists or feeling like you are reading something written by surly old school marm with a bun so tight she can't blink.Good reading for anyone who wants to present their best front in any social situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Buy
If anything, it at least makes for an interesting read. I keep mine around the house in case I want to write a letter or throw a party. Not just for the dummies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for starters
I have liked the book and it covers many social, family and work environment situations, so it is good to have. However, in some instances it mixes American and European Etiquette (and twice already I have found mistakes between the two). It is really "for dummies" so if you are knowledgable in this area you will find this far too vague. However, it still had points to learn although I will still have to buy another one more advanced to complement it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for teens!
I have given this book to all my nieces and nephews and other young people. It gives excellent tips and hints about how to avoid social mistakes and how to feel more at ease in social situations. It is very easy to read, with a good format, and highlights special tips to remember. It is a good preparation for high school students and those going off to college as well as young people who are entering the business world for the first time.A good summary of the basics.

    Product Description
American Sign Language (ASL) is something we've all seen Deaf people use in restaurants, hospitals, airports, and throughout the marketplace. The communication is fascinating to watch; to see people sharing ideas by using handshapes and body language is remarkable in a world so defined by sound.

Signing For Dummies gives you a general understanding of the properties of Sign, as well as an understanding of Deaf culture. Designed to act as an introduction or a refresher, the book focuses solely on ASL. Although certainly not the only form of Sign Language, ASL is the most popular in the Deaf community within the United States.

Categorized by subject, this illustrated guide covers grammar and sentence structure, along with the tools to get you going in basic conversation by knowing how to

  • Introduce and greet people
  • Ask questions and make small talk
  • Order food and chat with salespeople
  • Handle medical emergencies
  • Talk on the phone
  • Get around town for fun or business

Although "speaking" American Sign Language (ASL) is mostly a matter of using your fingers, hands, and arms, facial expression and body language are important and sometimes crucial for understanding Signs and their meaning. Signing For Dummies gets the whole body into the action as the fun-to-read resource explores

  • Signs that look like what they mean
  • Expression of emotions and feelings
  • Signing sports and weather
  • Compass points conversations: Getting or giving directions
  • Descriptions of where it hurts
  • Deaf community customs, norms, and culture

Each chapter throughout the book invites you to practice specific Signs in a "Fun & Games" section. Translation guides complement the video CD-ROM, which features demonstrations by ASL Signers and actual conversations in progress – all designed to have you moving your hands, body, and face to convey meaning that reaches way beyond linguistic barriers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Explanation
It's a very good book to learn signing. The only problem, more of a frustration, was figuring out the directions of the arrows (ie. side to side or backwards or forwards).

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice supplement
I am taking ASL in the spring semester just to learn another language. It will also provide me with an additional asset where I am a RN in a hospital. The book is a great supplement to help me with my class. The book helps learning the language fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Signing for Dummies
I found this book to be most helpful well worth the money.Easy to understand and very accurate in ASL

4-0 out of 5 stars Sign Language Book
Signing for Dummies is just a quick little insight to signing.Great for learning some basic vocabulary words in sign.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners.
This is a very good book for learning individual signs the right way. The signs are accurate, however you will find that some may vary greatly in the deaf community of your area. The ASL speaking community varies greatly, like most other language groups, from one geographic location to another. It more or less amounts to slang. Be assured, if you sign something the deaf do not understand, they will tell you. Then you can spell the word to them and they'll tell you how they sign it. This book is a great start, it has a lot of signs, doesn't really touch on grammar much, but great book to start with. ... Read more

If you think dating is a simple process--meet someone, ask him or herfor a date or get asked out yourself, try not to come off as a drooling moron, thenarrange to get together for a second date or cut your losses and work to meetsomeone else--well, lucky you. For many people, it's far more complicated thanthat, and Dr. Joy Browne addresses those complexities in Dating for Dummies.Exactly how do you meet a potential date? 3-0 out of 5 stars Same old dating advice
If you are new to dating or feel like you need some sort of refresher course, then this book will be a good read. However, I feel the book is a little too general in how it speaks to the reader. If you are going to read a book about dating, I want some specific advice on some techniques to try and while this book offers some advice, I feel that it kind of regurgitates what you already know about dating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice small book of common sense advice.
A cute miniature book with advice for people who are about to go on to the dating scene. It has a lot of common sense advice, and a nice small gift to give to buddies.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent buy, but nothing that can't be found Online
I bought this book because I was a late bloomer. The book offered good advice and did the legwork of a few Google searches, but overall, the content is not rocket science - it's common sense.

My advice would be the following:

1.Do a complete self-scan, and make improvements that make you feel good about yourself.

2.Go to places that you're comfortable (no, this is not your home, it's places with other people with SIMILAR interests).

3.Talk to people. It's amazing what a simple conversation can lead to

4.DO NOT, under any circumstances, think about being rejected. If there's a fear of rejection, which we all have, thinking about it will provoke the stressful feelings that come with it.My advice would be to accept rejection as a part of life and an element that makes us stronger.

Anyway, that's my review.I felt like that before buying the book and it didn't change me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Good Ideas for People with Little Dating Experience
This book is written for late teens to early thirties men and women who have little dating experience.Having hosted her own radio talk show for many years Brown developed her ideas by listening and analyzing her audiences.

Brown takes a humorous and positive look at many interesting dating topics. Her early chapters focus considerable time on preparing to date and then deciding on who to date. She next explored where to go and what to do on dates. She concludes her observations by offering tips on dating smartly and successfully.

There is some bias in the book which detract from its content. For example, Joy Browne says don't date people from work. Many great marriages have come from dating people at work.If two people are mature, they can date and decide how they would handle things if their relationship doesn't work out.

This book has some useful ideas for people with little dating experience. There are several better books on the market.

The Re-Discovery of Common Sense: A Guide to: The Lost Art of Critical Thinking

2-0 out of 5 stars According to An Average Woman
With all due respect to Dr. Joy, this book is of limited use to men. Many of the reviews have observed this book to represent a female perpective. I am a middle-aged man, and in my experience, there really is no such thing as THE female perspective. In fact, there are three: the perspective of an attractive woman, that of an average woman, and that of an unattractive woman. Trust me, these are three distinctly different perspectives, and one approach does NOT fit all.

An attractive woman is in demand and is approached all the time. She lives in a reality in which she has many options, often more than she can handle. She can therefore afford to be selective to an extent that less attractive women would consider impractical. Such a woman could not care less whether a man is on his best behavior, or if he has taken the time to plan out a date, brush his teeth, or other such mundane and pedestrian considerations. She brings high romantic and erotic expectations into relationships, which is why she would never develop such an interest in a man who is merely a friend. She settles only for a guy who has Brad Pitt's looks or Donald Trump's success or uncommon inner masculine qualities of supreme confidence - bordering on arrogance, dominance, boldness, adventurousness, etc. In short, she demands and gets what other women only fantasize about.

Unattractive women have no options. Many of them live in denial until reality catches up with them, typically in their 30s. They eventually learn that being selective is not something that was meant for them. As such, they consider themselves lucky to get any expression of interest, and the rules of the game articulated in Dr. Joy's book do not apply to them. With them, no rule is needed.

The only women to whom this book applies are the average ones -- those who are neither attractive nor repulsive. These are the women who have adjusted their expectations so they can be selective within their own compromised realms. Rules and expectations give them a sense of control and sovereignty which becomes an acceptable substitute for facing the reality that they will never have what they truly desire. Dr. Joy herself is likely one such woman, and she has been gracious enough to share her perspective in great detail in her book. However, my advice to any man considering reading the book is this: If you are interested in dating average women, this book should be your bible. If not, save your time and money. ... Read more
