5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most enjoyable textbooks ever
I love this book. It's easy to read and yet conveys tons of interesting information. It's a work of art.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great condition!
The book came exactly in the condition described. It only had slight highlighting in some areas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very basic book
Time for a new edition. I have been tracking this franchise since edition #4...

Bottom line is that the "gold standard" has become more and more streamlined.

In all fairness, the book is amazingly current, incorporating the latest research, e.g. decision making, neurocinematics, etc.

Sometimes, this comes at the cost of substance.

Biggest pet-peeve: The CD is somewhat useless. Where are the figures from the book? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mislead
The description offered by the sellers was misleading. I received the book in worse condition than it was advertised as being in. The seller's description said no marks, no highlighting, but when I got it, ever page had multiple sections highlighted or marked up. Seller also did not clarity that the Lab CD was not included (although title of book implies that it is).

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.
As a psychology major wanting to focus on the counselling aspects, a sensation and perception course was definitely not high on my 'want to take' list. But, not only was the class entertaining and informative, but this text was pretty darn good.It wasn't nearly as dry as my usual psychology text book, and it was highly informative, going into depth and giving examples to tie everything together. If you are a psychology professor, I would highly recommend this text for your class. It made me, someone not interested in the topic at all, not only love the class but continue to use the knowledge that I gained in real world settings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensation & Perception
The book came in timely manner. I am very please with the condition of the book. The CD, although I have not looked at it yet on the computer, appears to be in good shape. Thank you!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars great text, don't know why people are complaining
The writing is concise and the book is updated so often because of all of the new research coming out on sensation and perception. Lots of recent research is included in this text, which is cool. If you're into looking at diagrams/pictures while learning, everything is in color and aesthetically pleasing to look at.I wouldn't agree with the previous reviewer that the language is too technical.Yes, it would probably help to have an intro to psychology course or some knowledge of science behind you, but the author defines and explains his concepts very well, in my opinion. I didn't use the CD that came with it, but my professor did in her lectures which had relevant demonstrations that I thought were interesting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Obtuse and highly technical
Dear Sir or Maam,
I found the work of this book to be perplexing and difficult to understand. While I am happy with the supplemental web-site, which holds most aspects of the CD-ROM, I am not very happy with the way that the author presents the material. In fact, I find the readings of this book so frustrating that I often want to scream expletives or cry myself to sleep.

No, I am not just saying this to be mean spirited.I would happily pay another 60 dollars if the author would lead his paragraphs with 1) a subject definition 2) link the same principle in the next sentence and 3) end with a conclusion. The language might flow better by placing sentence subjects near an action verb.I don't want to wait 20 lines to find out what the "study" ... ... ... .... ... ... ... "finds."

I found this book to be incredibly obtuse and highly technical, and I study economics. In other words, I am quite used to reading the most dense stuff imaginable. As you might be able to tell from my profile, this is my first bad book review on Amazon.Save your money, and your students money by not ordering this book.

(Lastly, an apology to the author if he reads this.Dr. Goldstein should blame his editors, not some idiot like me on Amazon.I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.Your CD-ROM and website are very nice.)

Product Description
Why does the sky look blue? Why does sugar taste sweet? Can my dog hear the same things I hear? We all start out as natural enthusiasts for the subject material of a Sensation and Perception class. Sinauer Associates’ new Sensation and Perception text is written by experts in each of the five senses who never lost that enthusiasm and who have a passion for conveying the excitement of this field of study to students. Sensation and Perception provides up-to-date and accurate descriptions of vision, audition, touch, taste, and olfaction in a lively and engaging manner. The book reflects the recent explosion of knowledge in higher-level perception with extensive coverage of topics such as attention, haptic perception, and speech and music. At the same time, the text provides a solid grounding in the basics of sensory physiology and psychophysics.

For students for whom this is the beginning and end of their study of sensation and perception, this text is intended to give an accessible, engaging and intellectually satisfying survey of the major topics in the field. For those who are continuing, the text will be a stimulating invitation to more extensive study in this rich field.

This is the first introductory sensation and perception textbook to take advantage of full-color printing through out. A robust website includes activities and demonstrations as well as additional written material for added depth. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Above college level
My teacher only referenced this book, & said "it was far to detailed and complex for college level studies."

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well written, not too technical.
This book is very thorough but not tedious. Illustrations and diagrams provide excellent learning aids.

3-0 out of 5 stars psychology book--sensation and perception
if you like sensation and perception then this book is easy to understand, otherwise this book is just a typical textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
pretty good book for the sensation and perception class i took at UCLA

provides good examples,

1). its very to-the point
2). illustrations are really helpful for understanding stuff
3). very well written, easy to understand
4). pretty short :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect balance
This is an excellent book. It was the course book for a graduate level course in Sensation and Perception that I took. Despite my fears (I have no Biology or Psychology background), this book made all the difference. What makes it so good is the fact that its both comprehensive, in depth and current (It's a fast moving field), yet it's written for people, not for academic material chewing robots. The text is fluent, simple, with explanations of non-trivial terms on the side notes. The writers occasionally use jokes and different tricks to make the material understandable and keep the reader entertained, but they don't overdo it. Perfect balance.

I would actually recommend this book even for non-academics. If you're interested in Cognitive Science in general and Sensation and Perception specifically, make it your first introduction to the field (along with "The man who mistook his wife for a hat"). It's just too good to be left for the small few who happen to study Cognitive Science. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars shocked by the highlighter
I read in the description that the book is like new and I assumed that you get a book that is close to new, hence: almost no highlighter etc. The cover of the book is okay. Also the person who send it, did it pretty quickly. BUT the inside of the book is horrible. I cannot use a highlighter to mark sth.. I am using a red pen, so you can differentiate your things from previous people (which seem to me, were two)

After this experienxe I decided to never buy a used item anymore (like I said, it was labeled as almost new). I mean I payed over 60$ for something that is absolutely not worth it. Next time I will invest a few dollars more and get solely new stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive
I forgot I ordered this text. Too bad I didn't really need it for my Cognitive Psychology class. Everyone should read this text. Eye-opening lessons about sensation and perception. I think I will actually read it next year. Arrived in perfect condition and in time for mid-terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT coverage of S & P
I chose Coren & Ward because a GRE study guide recommended it. C&W was the best GRE studying I did.

The writing is clear, the organization is great, the illustrations, diagrams, and inset examples are excellent. You can't do better than this to get an overview of S&P. Good introductory or mid-level book. Starts with all the basics (how the ear works, how we see color) and winds up with complex topics like how we perceive music.

A good reference book, it's even fun for browsing, or for sharing with friends and saying "This is so cool! Check this out!" (regarding some of the perceptual illusions and demonstrations etc.) How many textbooks can you say that about? ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

This comprehensive introduction to Sensation and Perception has been highly praised for its unique approach, which begins with the minor senses and progresses to vision.

The book begins with an introductory chapter on general physiological, perceptual and theoretical principles which gives the reader the conceptual tools to build a clear understanding of how we perceive the world. The next two chapters then flesh out basic topics such as transduction, receptive fields, and sensory adaptation via coverage of the minor senses (touch, balance, smell, and taste). Later chapters on hearing and vision build on these foundations. This approach allows students to thoroughly grasp the fundamental principles in relation to the relatively simple sensory systems before moving on to the more complex topics. Unlike other perception textbooks, this has a whole chapter on Individual Differences, which considers potential sources of difference such as age, sex, expertise and culture.

This full-color 2nd edition has been revised and updated to include:

  • Revised and expanded coverage of taste processing and perception, touch perception, pitch perception, and receptive field modeling.
  • New sections on word perception, the size after-effect, crowding, scene perception, and optic flow.
  • A completely new chapter devoted to multi-sensory processing and synesthesia, with a new tutorial on attentional effects in perception.
  • A new tutorial on visual dysfunction in artists.

The book includes a number of helpful textbook features, such as key terms, chapter summaries, and student and instructor supplementary resources. There are also 'Tutorial' sections in each chapter, which provide an opportunity for students to advance their studies by exploring supplementary information on recent or controversial developments. Further, over 700 references to original source material lead the interested reader into the specialist literature.

Foundations of Sensation and Perception provides students with a thorough analysis of our perceptual experience, how it relates to the physical properties of the world and how it is linked to the biological properties of the brain. It will be an invaluable resource for those studying psychology and neuroscience, enabling the reader to achieve a firm grasp of current knowledge concerning the complex processes that underlie our perception of the world.

Student Resources: Perception Student Learning Program

The student website includes our Perception Student Learning Program (Perception SLP) which offers a unique and innovative approach to study. The Perception SLP is available free of charge to departments adopting Foundations of Sensation and Perception by George Mather.

Each chapter from Foundations of Sensation and Perception is condensed into a concise summary version, providing an effective set of revision notes. These notes also expand on and elucidate the book's content, with references to specific pages in the textbook. 'Must know' information is presented in a clear, accessible style, along with sections to stretch more advanced students. The notes also provide an integrative framework for a range of interactive multimedia materials and features, including:

  • Animations and simulations of key perceptual phenomena
  • Fill-in-the-blank questions
  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Key-term definitions
  • Research studies
  • Short-essay questions
  • Links to related websites.

Several demo chapters from the Perception Student Learning Program are available to view.

Product Description
Based on two decades of thought and research, this book presents a new fundamental equation termed the "entropy theory of perception" and proceeds to show how nearly all of the empirical laws of sensory science discovered in the last 130 years can be derived from this equation. Through this, the book offers a new theoretical approach to understanding the process of perception, and a new mathematical technique for analyzing sensory data. The book also discusses both machine and human perception, but from the perspective of mathematics/physics rather than from that of a neural network model. ... Read more
