A strong curiosity about nature is a prime characteristic of an astronomer, along with the ability to imagine and visualize conditions much different than those of everyday experience. The universe presents us with examples of phenomena occurring at the extremes (both high and low) of pressure, temperature, density, and gravity that we cannot reproduce (at least not easily!) in laboratories on Earth. Since technology is progressing so rapidly, it is important for you to be versatile. You must be willing to learn quickly and explore new ways of doing your work. Since your discoveries are much more useful to others when they are communicated, good writing and speaking skills are essential. It also helps immensely to be patient and persistent and to be organized enough to work on several projects at once, as many projects will take years to complete. You should also enjoy working with others; many projects are done in teams. What is life as an astronomer like?

Extractions: Astrophysics and Space Physics This area of research exploration, encompassing about one-third of the faculty members of the department, offers many research opportunities in fields such as observational and theoretical astrophysics, high-energy and particle astrophysics, and space science. Experimental opportunities involve observations from ground-based telescopes and from high-altitude balloons and spacecraft, as well as laboratory studies and numerical modeling. For students interested in graduate work in astrophysics, an astrophysics specialization is provided as part of the graduate curriculum in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Observational Astrophysics The observational astronomy group involves multiwavelength observations using telescopes in Arizona, Hawaii, Chile, and other sites around the world. Telescopes in space, such as FUSE, ISO, and the Hubble Space Telescope , are also employed for ultraviolet and infrared observations. The current research areas range from photometric studies of standard stars to investigations of the late stages of stellar evolution and the distribution of dust in the interstellar medium. Drilling's reaearch centers around two late stages of stellar evolution: extreme helium stars and very hot subdwarfs. Students pursuing this major have the option of following one of two tracks: General Astronomy, housed in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences (APS); or Astrophysics/ Physics, jointly supervised by APS and the Department of Physics. The General Astronomy track highlights the science of astronomy, observation, and technology. As a major in this track, you receive core training in astronomical sciences, mathematics, applied physics, and computational and instrumental technology needed for professions in the space sciences. The Astrophysics/Physics track is directed toward students interested in pursuing graduate studies in astrophysics. The track is multidisciplinary in focus with work in physics, mathematics and astronomy. Upon graduation students should have solid technological training in the space sciences, including mathematical, physical, computational, and instrumental expertise. The Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences-which administers both tracks-is one of the few programs that combines both astrophysics and planetary science, providing a unified view of space sciences, the solar system, and comparative planetology, stellar and galactic astronomy, and cosmology.
