Differential equations are an integral part or a goal of many undergraduate calculus courses. As an important mathematical tool for the physical sciences, the differential equation has no equal. So it is widely accepted that differential equations are important in both applied and pure mathematics. The history of this subject is rich in its development, and that's what we look at here. The foundations of this subject seem to be so dominated by the contributions of one man, Leonhard Euler , that one could say the history of this subject starts and ends with him. While the fundamental theory of meshfree methods has been developed and considerable advances of the various methods have been made, many challenges in the mathematical analysis and practical implementation of meshfree methods remain. One of the reasons for the growing interest in meshfree methods is the fact that meshfree discretizations and particle models are often better suited to cope with geometric changes of the domain of interest, e.g. free surfaces and large deformations, than classical discretization techniques such as finite differences, finite elements or finite volumes. Furthermore, since meshfree discretization techniques are based only on a set of independent points the costs of mesh generation are eliminated. Also the coupling of particle models to continuous models gained enormous interest in recent years from a theoretical as well as from a practical point of view.
