After the more informal treatment in the first year, our aim now is to develop a really precise understanding of these notions and to give fully watertight proofs of the theorems involving them. We also show how the theorems apply to give useful facts about specific functions such as exp, log, sin, cos. Description The course starts with a thorough treatment of limits of sequences and convergence of series. The notion of a limit is then extended to functions, which leads to the analysis of differentiation, including proper proofs of techniques learned at A-level. The intermediate value theorem is now given the respect it deserves and proved from the definitions, and we discover that it has many more applications than you ever suspected! We turn next to the mean value theorem: earlier results ensure that its proof is now easy, and we show how to derive both identities and inequalities. The notion of integration is then put under the microscope; it is defined (with no fudging allowed!) as an area, and we show how to get from this definition to the familiar technique of evaluating integrals by reverse differentiation. We describe some applications of integration that are quite different from the ones you met in A-level, such as estimations of sums of series and (perhaps) Stirling's formula.
