1-0 out of 5 stars -5
I'll have to agree. This text is the definition of vague. The examples given just don't explain anything in great detail, or even in detail at all. Just awful.

2-0 out of 5 stars From an older, math challenged college student
I have always had trouble with math. I have also been out of HS for many years, therefore, I started with the edition before this one, just finished a class using this book and will be trying to pass college algebra next semester. I agree with other posters about there not being adequate examples. When you are doing the exercises (homework), there are no problems for the student to reference that are close to many of the problems you are required to answer. And the book is loaded with word problems. My biggest problems with math are when instructors/books leave out steps. I just wasn't gifted in the area of memorization of math facts and formulas so I struggle and this book was not helpful. The internet was more helpful than this book with homework assignments.

If you do struggle, I would look into the student solutions manual. Also, I took intermediate algebra as an online class and the MathXL software package required was way more helpful to me than this book. I give two stars only because I wouldn't have a clue as to what book to recommend as a better resource.

There are 11 chapters:
1 - Algebra and Problem Solving
2 - Graphs, Functions, Linear Equations
3 - Systems of Equations and Problem Solving
4 - Inequalities & Problem Solving
5 - Polynomials and Polynomial Functions
6 - Rational Expressions, Equations, Functions
7 - Exponents & Radicals
8 - Quadratic Functions & Equations
9 - Exponential & Logarithmic Functions
10 - Conic Sections
11 - Sequences, Series, & Binomial Theorem

Good luck!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you want a REVIEW of Algebra 2
I am currently taking Algebra 2, cannot find anyone in the class that likes the book. The author gives very few examples, too brief on discussing topics. This book would be great for someone who has already had Algebra 2 and wants to do a review. I am now reading other material to understand what this book is talking about.

4-0 out of 5 stars good self-study book
first off, i'm not rebecca stack, but we use the same account. i am self-studying at home using this book. addison wesley were completely and utterly unhelpful when i asked for assistance when i first purchased the book and solutions manual. as for the book itself, i'm very happy with my purchase, although if you have no normal class/teacher resources, i would say it's essential to buy the solutions manual.

since i am wading through every single problem, i'm simply amazed that a 9th edition of any textbook can have so many wrong answers. anyone who has actually worked through a quarter of the problems deserves a case of champagne from addison wesley, in my opinion, and free textbooks for life.....

on the whole, though, i'm highly recommending this book as it is very suitable for anyone wanting to self study this topic with a view to going on to calculus. it's a monumental amount of work, if you're going to attempt all the problems, but even taking the errors into account, i feel more confident with mathematics now than i have ever before. even with my reservations, i look forward to tackling marv's calculus textbook (although i've now learned my lesson and will be buying other texts).

2-0 out of 5 stars THis is a misleading title

4-0 out of 5 stars Typos
There are several typing errors in the solutions to the solved problems in this book, and some are just wrong. There is a version in which most of these problems were fixed, I am relatively sure that this is not the corrected version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Linear Algebra
This is the Higher level Linear Algebra book that covers the entire topic range. Helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary
I wanted to brush up on Eigenvalues for a compression algorithm and this was the perfect way to efficienctly recall everything from college. Very useful and succinct.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent detail
this text is very user friendly. the sample problems are completely worked out, so there is no guessing where the solution comes from. it's a great review book, and very easy to understand for a first time learner of linear algebra. although, i did find a few typos and insignificant errors. for example, when asked to find a parametric representation of the line passing through the point p(4,-2,3,1) in the direction of a vector u=[2,5,-7,8] , the equation for x2 is mistyped as x2=-2+2t. (2t where 5t should be)

This is a decent algebra 2 workbook but I don't recommend it because there is no answer key.

2-0 out of 5 stars A terrible book
I'm working out of this book in high school these days - I actually am in high school but I used the kid's review because I've no account - but it's really the worst math textbook I have ever used. It gives practice problems with certain factors that are not explained in the text. In its attempt to teach methods, it provides examples with little or no explanation of how to perform the steps. It recieves two stars only because you can sometimes figure out how to complete a problem by looking up the answers to the odd questions in the back of the book. If you, like me, are being forced to study from this book, do yourself a favor and take great notes in class. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Its pretty good
I used this book in 9th grade overall it was a pretty good book. It gives for the most part clear explanations on how to do the work. A problem is that some of the examples were a lot easier than the book work was. But if you pay attention to the teacher that shouldnt be a problem. It has all the uneven answers in the back so you can see how your doing which is a good thing. Overall not bad it got me through algebra all right and combined with teacher explanations you should understand it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is Great!!
I am currently a 7th grader and i take Algebra 1 for Credit. This book has been most helpful in me learning how to do it. This book gets five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why there are these different reviews
I had this book in freshman yr. as well as the geometry book that follows in sophmore yr of high school. In my own classes i often found that the people whom said bad things about the book such as those in the following reviews are the people who either did not pay attention in class, or did not care about the subject enough to put the effort to try to understand the matter. On the other hand, some of the concepts were a little advanced, but my teachers usually explained them in a way we could understand. If the student is doing their job as well as the teachers there shouldn't be a problem with this book. I would strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER
Don't listen to what the other people are saying. I got first hand experience on this book. I must say that this is probably the best and most easy to understand math book i have ever used. The answer key in the back allows the user to assure that their answers are correct. If you are considering buying this book, i must say YES, DEFINATELY BUY THIS BOOK, IT WILL BE WORTH YOUR WHILE!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars this is the most suckiest book i have ever read about algebra
this book sucks, it taught me nothing, because of this boook i faild algebra.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unhelpful, but at least consistantly unhelpful
Gilbert Strang is a wonderful old professor who teaches Linear Algebra at MIT. He is also a terrible math book author. Written, well, like a brilliant man who is dumbing down his ideas for students, the text winds through multiple topics without ever nailing down important specifics. Even the chapter reviews, the 'concise points' of each chapter, are incredibly vague and nonspecific. For example, while discussing LU decompositions, Strang continually speaks of its computational efficiency but never mentions WHY the LU decomposition is computationally advantageous.

The book skimps even a bit too much on theorems, leaving you to believe Strang's hand-waving without walking you through the proofs. I understand this book is about application, but it's a bit too vague just to use for application; I don't need to know how you got to a proof, but I'd like to know why things in a formula works.

Maybe this book is better if you simultaneously take Strang's OpenCourseware class online. However, as a stand alone textbook, it's terrible. I've resorted to using Strang's chapter titles as my online search outline.

4-0 out of 5 stars And watch the FREE videos on the MIT site
It's hard to rate the textbook by itself, because I'm also watching the videos of the author's class on the MIT Open Courseware website. But no doubt, the two of these together are an unbeatable combination. The website videos are excellent.I do find the book somewhat hard to follow when I try to read it before watching the videos, but afterward, it's quite clear. So maybe I'd rate the book a 3 by itself, but a 5+ in combination with the FREE online videos.Strang is an outstanding lecturer.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a terrible book!!!!!
I'm not one to be picky about an author's style of writing, but in the case of this book I have to be. It is COMPLETELY FALSE to call this book "introduction to linear algebra", what the title should be is "Gilbert Strang's ideas about linear algebra that no undergraduate in a first course in linear algebra will ever understand". Talk about inconsiderate instead of clearly explaining the steps involved in solving a problem, Strang will simple talk about some example of his personal interest that does nothing to solidify the main idea within the problem. How about the worked examples, he picks some arbitrary matrices and makes it so they can be solved in a single or very few steps that helps a lot when you want to know what's going on within the examples. Homework its freaking great to, the first question within each section is easy and than the second question and beyond is some kind of proof that you have no clue how to even approach because the author assumes you mastered the simple part in one question. I guess when you're a professor at MIT than you're automatically given the right to write terrible textbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars The engineer's classic.
People say that mathematical truths never change, and that's true enough. New concepts, applications, and techniques keep emerging, though, so math teaching needs to keep up with the times. Strang has done an outstanding job of keeping this book current and relevant.

It's not a mathematician's math book - this is aimed at people who need results and needs computational techniques more than they need crystalline theorems. That's why it's so helpful to see applications like Markov models, Kirchoff's laws, and Google's analyses of the web. It's also helpful to see examples worked in Mathematica and MATLAB, the tools of choice for desktop exploration of numerical systems. It's startlingly easy to come up with a 100x100 system of equations, and just nuts to try to solve it by hand.

Strang assumes some amount of calculus in this book, something that other books on linear algebra sometimes skip. That raises the bar for the readership, but also opens up topics like change-of-basis in function space, including Fourier analysis. It also allows differential equations to be addressed as linear systems. Even without calculus, though, a reader is exposed to the singular value decompostion, QR and other matrix decompositions, and considerations in performing the computations. I found a few oddities, such as the description of a matrix's condition number. That has great physical meaning when it's taken as the ratio of the matrix's highest and lowest eigenvalues, but Strang gives a definition that I found less intuitive.

Such oddities are rare, though. Even though this book covers many topics, its emphasis is on clear and applicable presentation. I recommend this to anyone studying linear algebra or who, like me, has to brush up on basics not used in many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
As someone who already knows the basics of the subject, I guess I'm looking at things with the benefit of hindsight. However, I needed to shore up my own knowledge of Linear Algebra and thought I might as well turn to Strang for a refresher and a different approach.

The result is that I am truly pleased with this book. His writing is lively and engaging.Linear Algebra has a phenomenal tendency to get dry and Strang does an excellent job of turning the subject this way and that so that one can admire it from every angle. In particular, there are three major approaches in this book that make it stand out.

1.Strang places heavy emphasis on vectors, vector spaces and transformations. This is good preparation for future study in Linear Algebra. This will provide an intuitive understanding of linear operators on vector spaces later.

2.Another reviewer mentioned that the book utilises a discovery-based approach. While this might be a disadvantage when you're in a hurry, the approach prepares one well for learning more theoretically oriented subjects where self-guided discovery is imperative. In this sense, I think the discovery approach is far superior to others and prepares the reader well for future studies. The problems are really fun (although I personally think they are much too easy). Many of the questions require light-weight proofs without undue formalism (not really required at this level). These pseudo-proofs really do help build understanding of the subject.Maths-phobes will not even realise that they're fleshing out the subject themselves.

3.The didactic approach taken in the book is conversational and informal. When added to the freely available video lectures at the OCW site, given by Strang himself, you really have a perfect introduction to the subject of Linear Algebra. The lectures are superb and Strang is an excellent teacher. His enthusiasm and passion for the subject is obvious and infectious.

I really wish I had learned Linear Algebra from this book initially. The book does a good job of encouraging geometric intuition and visualisation. That said, I do not think the book is an ideal book for maths majors. The primary problems being too little exposure to abstraction and problems which are too easy. However, I do believe that the book can be used in conjunction with a more rigorous approach in cases where the latter gets just a touch too dry. There is time to develop the rigour in theoretical Algebra courses at a later stage, with the added benefit that the reader will have learned the experimental approach to learning taken in the book.

I suppose some will find Strang's excitement over Linear Algebra a bit of a pain, but personally I think this conveys the sheer joy of pursuing an intellectual endeavour.I've always bordered on disinterest with Linear Algebra and this has been very much dispelled.I like to be reminded why I chose to study mathematics in the first place sometimes. While I can see that this book isn't for everyone, I really enjoy it and recommend it highly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Far better than most others
This is a well thought out Algebra textbook.I started teaching from it earlier this year and have grown to appreciate it very much.I am especially pleased the more I compare this to other books. Most math books these days are little more than pretty colors, crazy fonts, neat pictures, lots of distractions, and very little actual math instruction. This book, on the other hand, actually focuses on the math, explains it reasonably well, and has great sets of real example problems and practice problems of all difficulty levels, including lots of practical problems that aren't forced or contrived. It is not perfect, but it is the best I have seen.

Pros:
*Lots of math rather than lots of silly distractions
*Appropriate difficulty level - not "dumbed down"
*Good examples worked out and explained
*Good problem sets for homework and practice

Cons:
*Some explanations are just a bit short, although most are good
*Factoring, the hardest topic, is early in the book, which makes it difficult for some students

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for students
This is a pretty good comprehensive textbook for students of all levels. There are twelve chapters in the book, plus a glossary, various helpful appendices, and an index. The book contains "A" (easy), "B" (intermediate), and "C" (challenging( problem sets for every topic covered. Also, enrichment topics are included, including "Extra," "Challenge," "Historical Note," "Application," and "Career."

Like any other book, this book does, however, isn't absolutely perfect. One thing about this book is that the explanations in this book at the top of every section summarizes important concepts and gives some examples and definitions; however, the examples often only cover the "A" and half of the "B" problem sets, and the "C" problems are often unexplained. Also, the textbook seems to be designed for slightly more advanced students, as the problems and pace of the text isn't for beginning or struggling students.

One note is that this book isn't the best tool to teach yourself math, although it is an excellent source for problem sets, and also serves as an excellent reference for algebraic concepts. I would recommend "CliffsStudy Solver Algebra I" if you are having trouble with Algebra I or if you want to teach yourself math, because this textbook is not designed to be a tutorial. I have tried to teach myself many new math concepts, but this book didn't always help - though I did some new problem solving strategies from here. Sometimes the explanations were simply skimmed over too quickly.

Overall, this is a great book. It's really helped me with my math grade, but this is just one of my math books which helped me. With teacher guidance, one or two more study guides, and most importantly, a dedicated self-motivated mind, you are bound to be a success in algebra.

4-0 out of 5 stars Math Blast
I think overall, the book, Algebra Structure and method is wonderful. The book provides the odd answers to the problems, in the back, which is nice, because it gives me sense of if I'm getting the problems correct, without telling me all the answers.I also like how the difficulty of problems is catagorized, with "a" problems being the easiest, "b"problems, in the middle and "c" problems the hardest.Sometimes the explanations of how to do the problem are a little confusing, though. All in all, this book is a good teacher. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book - period
I am 55 years old and promised myself that when I became financially able I would relearn Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Calculus I, II,III & IV and ODE skills from start to finish. I am now finished with Sullivan's book I have found the book easy to read and understand. The presenation of the material is well thought out and the abundance of practice problems invaluable. If you are serious about math then this is a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
This book has the solutions for the material presented in the book. The book has helped me alot. The only think I don't like about it, is that the book has to many practice exercises and too many pages.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
The information listed in the "Product Details" section for this book is very misleading. As noted in the other comments, this book is the paperback Student Solutions Manual. It is NOT a hardcover book and the ISBN number is not ISBN: 0130914657 (as listed in the product detail section). This book may prove to be helpful but it was not the book I thought I ordered.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Precalculus Reference
With the sixth edition of this textbook, Sullivan has made significant strides since the fifth edition of the College Algebra portion. The interval notations used to indicate the regions where the value of a function is increasing or decreasing is so much more clear and concise. In contrast to the former use of frequently displaying number lines with pluses and minuses underneath, in which the readings of them were perhaps more of an exercise for the eyes than for the mind, Sullivan revised this mess using parentheses and brackets to indicate test intervals.

As a teacher, I say that this is not the most user-friendly book for an instructor who teaches one hour college algebra classes three times a week. Oftentimes, for me to quickly get the fundamentals across, I have to paraphrase what Sullivan lays out in many of the sections. The language is often too theoretical for several of my students (Many are in non-technical majors but have to complete college algebra as a last mathematics course requirement), and I have to put the symbolic logic sequences into terms that can cross over to applied mathematics. This is not meant to be a criticism, however.

Perhaps the main weaknesses lie in the shortcomings of applied problems, particularly in the sections concerning maxima and minima, and especially in the inequality segments. On a very positive note, however, I will grant that the sixth chapter, which involves logarithms and exponents is quite fascinating. For instance, you have applied problems involving the amount of interest that can be gained after so many years if, say, [money amount]is deposited into an account and accumulates interest at 6% compounded quarterly. Physics problems are also well presented. One interesting tidbit: if you wondered how long it would take for a 300-degree dish to cool down to 100 degrees in an environment that is at room temperature, the formula that can be used, namely Newton's Law of Cooling, is provided. As another example: suppose that a dead animal was discovered in a barn at midnight and its temperature was 80°F° ; the temperature of the barn is kept constant at 60°F; two hours later the temperature of the corpse dropped to 75°F; find the time of death. The formula for this type of problem is also shown.

As added kudos, I especially like the intermittent TI-83 calculator tips. The use of technology in mathematics classes is notably increasing in the community colleges. All in all, this is a finer, more updated version, and it is especially recommended for those who want to go beyond the call of duty and discover new ways of applying mathematics to their daily lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please read this review!!!!
1)Michael Sullivan (Sr.) is one of the four or five best writers
of math textbooks on today's scene. If you can find a textbook written by him that fits whatever current math course you are in
buy the book sight unseen. You will be more than happy that you
did.
2)As far as this book is concerned, I used it from chapter 1 to the end (every section of every chapter) and did every problem in
the book. I did not have an instructor and I was not enrolled in a course. I used the book to brush up for calculus after being out of school for 20 years.
3)This book is great for a course in college algebra, trigonometry, or precalculus. It serves all three purposes. I know this because after I finished the text and began studying
calculus, on my own, I was really able to appreciate how well
Sullivan's book prepared me for calculus.
4)The explanations of each concept are clear, not more rigorous
than is appropriate for a student at the level of the textbook,
but certainly not dumbed down.
5)The problems and questions are well written, comprehensive, and
most importantly, instructive. I found that the best question I
could ask myself about every problem in the book was "now what is
Sullivan trying to get me to see by doing this problem or answering this question". I mention this because this is what Sullivan is really good at; he doesn't spoon feed you.
6)Look, we all want essentially the same things from a textbook.
We want clearly written, well illustrated worked out problems
that allow us to grasp the concept in question so that we can use
it to solve problems and answer conceptual questions. With Sullivan, you get this in great measure.
This is a wonderful textbook for both sudents and teachers. It is
a great book to learn from and a great book to learn to teach from. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Love the book...but don't buy it.All you need is the access code!
This is a great text. The one semester I taught out of it, I thought it was fantastic. And then I discoveredCourseCompass/MyMathLab multimedia software that accompanies (or better yet replaces) this text.I will never require the paper text again!

After purchasing an access code for MyMathLab, stuents can read this text online, work interactive mastery problem sets, and view video clips to help with problems.Using the software is like working with a tutor.Students get immediate feedback as well as helpful hints and even worked examples. They will never run out of practice problems because the software randomly generates them.

Homework is graded automatically, and yes, that's less work for me.But more importantly, I get honest easy-to-interperite feedback about my students' performace.I can see exactly what my students are struggling with and WHY.For the students who don't do the homework, there is no way to blame their poor exams scores on the text, the instructor, the phase of the moon, or whatever excuse may come to mind.I can see that they didn't do the homework. For the students who ARE doing the homework, I can see what they're missing and allocate some review time for it.

Sure, we COULD tally up how many students missed which question on the written homework we've carefully graded before every class period. But every minute spent grading is sixty seconds taken away from teaching. With MyMathLab, teachers have all the data on student performance they could ever dream of, and no teaching time is sacrificed to get it.

Homework assignments are customizable with a simple point-and-click interface. You decide your due dates, you pick your problems and your topics. If you want to start your class with a mixture of problems from chapters two and ten (for example), you can create a homework assignment with exactly those topics. And all the problems are wonderful, just like the problems in the paper text.

Teachers, if you aren't using the software version of this text, your students are missing out and you're spending needless energy on grading.

Students, if your teacher doesn't require the access code, buy it anyway. You can work problems online from a "generic" course, and your efforts will be directly reflected in your grade.Studying with the software is so easy and enjoyable (compared to traditional pencil and paper work) that you'll wonder why you ever had trouble with math.

This software could honestly stand on its own as an online course, but it can also reinforce the content delivered in a traditional lecture.Whether used as a central or tangental component of the class , it will be beneficial. ... Read more

Book Description

This is a graduate textbook covering an especially broad range of topics. The first part of the book contains a careful but rapid discussion of the basics of linear algebra, including vector spaces, linear transformations, quotient spaces, and isomorphism theorems. The author then proceeds to modules, emphasizing a comparison with vector spaces. A thorough discussion of inner product spaces, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and finite dimensional spectral theory follows, culminating in the finite dimensional spectral theorem for normal operators. The second part of the book is a collection of topics, including metric vector spaces, metric spaces, Hilbert spaces, tensor products, and affine geometry. The last chapter discusses the umbral calculus, an area of modern algebra with important applications.

For the third edition, the author has:

* added a new chapter on associative algebras that includes the well known characterizations of the finite-dimensional division algebras over the real field (a theorem of Frobenius) and over a finite field (Wedderburn's theorem);

* polished and refined some arguments (such as the discussion of reflexivity, the rational canonical form, best approximations and the definitions of tensor products);

* upgraded some proofs that were originally done only for finite-dimensional/rank cases;

* added new theorems, including the spectral mapping theorem and a theorem to the effect that , dim(V)<=dim(V*) with equality if and only if V is finite-dimensional;

* corrected all known errors;

* the reference section has been enlarged considerably, with over a hundred references to books on linear algebra.

From the reviews of the second edition:

"In this 2nd edition, the author has rewritten the entire book and has added more than 100 pages of new materials. As in the previous edition, the text is well written and gives a thorough discussion of many topics of linear algebra and related fields.the exercises are rewritten and expanded.Overall, I found the book a very useful one.It is a suitable choice as a graduate text or as a reference book."

- Ali-Akbar Jafarian, ZentralblattMATH

"This is a formidable volume, a compendium of linear algebra theory, classical and modern. The development of the subject is elegant. The proofs are neat. The exercise sets are good, with occasional hints given for the solution of trickier problems. It represents linear algebra and does so comprehensively."

-Henry Ricardo, MathDL

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding clarity; this is a very well-written book
Mathematics books are often considerably more difficult to read than their authors prepare their audiences to believe; this book is a happy exception. It is written for an audience of readers at a specific place in their studies (ones who know linear algebra but want to take their understanding of it to a deeper level), and it reaches this audience very well. The emphasis of this book is on linear algebra in abstract mathematics; it is less useful for people interested in numerical linear algebra.

As the name suggests, this book requires a fair amount of background. The introductory chapter moves very fast, but is thorough, and exciting to read. The rest of the book presents advanced topics at a more leisurely pace, while still remaining fairly concise. Some difficult concepts, such as the universal property, are introduced several times at several different places in the book, so that someone working through the book will be more familiar with them when it is finally necessary to understand them on a deeper level.

I find the material on modules outstanding; the author explores the analogies between modules and vector spaces, rigorously exploring which analogies hold, and giving examples of cases in which other analogies fail. The presentation of modules in this book differs greatly from that encountered in most abstract algebra texts: while most books focus on modules' similarities to rings and applications in commutative algebra, this text focuses on their similarities to vector spaces and applications to the study linear operators on vector spaces.

One should not be scared by the word "advanced" in the book's title.Although the book covers advanced topics, it is very clear. When proofs are omitted, it is usually because they are very easy for the reader to supply. The exercises are very valuable (some are critical for understanding the material), but they're not diabolically difficult.

I think this book would make an outstanding textbook for an introductory graduate-level course in linear algebra, or perhaps a senior-level undergraduate course for students with a strong background. It is also very well-suited to self-study.A student with prior background in abstract algebra (group theory, ring theory, etc.) will find this book much more manageable than a student who has not covered such material.People wanting a more introductory text might want to look to the book by Axler, or the old classic by Shilov.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real treasure
Linear algebra is crucial to anyone in a mathematical or technical field. To the pure or applied mathematician, it is the bread and butter -- a lot of fundamental theorems (even in quite advanced fields like algebraic geometry) ultimately come down to a calculation using linear algebra.

In any case, this book is brilliant for the moderately advanced student who knows the basics (maybe sketchily) and wants an extremely comprehensive, rigorous, and coherent review and reordering of his or her linear algebra knowledge. I knew most of the topics in this book in a superficial way, but reading it is quite fulfilling because it all comes together at once.

The choice of topics and the angles from which they are presented is extremely strong. The Jordan and Rational Canonical Forms get a full and rigorous treatment. Unlike many linear algebra books, which use some ugly matrix-related kludge in the proofs of the classification theorems, this book does these topics from the algebraic perspective (i.e., as decompositions of modules over principal ideal domains). Inner product spaces are done in their own substantial chunk of the book, where all the essential ideas are developed abstractly and well. Sometimes linear algebra books focus too much on particular examples of inner product spaces or resort to "magical" proofs of important inequalities. This book takes care to build up important lemmas so that big results fall out "naturally". It is by far the best abstract treatment of inner products that I have read (although it should be supplemented by a knowledge of some of the standard examples, which can be found in a typical introductory textbook).

The proofs are the most elegant possible, with no ugliness or nonsense. The notation is a gem, without confusing mixes of superscripts and subscripts and nonstandard choices. The exposition is at just the right level (for me at least) -- the steps in proofs that are left as exercises are all reasonable and straightforward, and all the details that are subtle or interesting are filled in, discussed, and emphasized.

I have been looking for a beautiful book on linear algebra of this sort for a long time, and am delighted to have finally found it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review tool!
After 13 years off of college, I went back last fall. The University required non-traditional students to take assessment tests, and in my first test, I was two points under the "passing" grade to get into college-level math courses. I bought the book, spent a weekend on it just reminding myself of all those things I forgot, and took the test again 3 days later, this time getting a perfect grade, saving myself several hundred bucks and a year of boring math classes.

The book is concise, clear, shows every step to each problem, and doesn't have a lot of empty filler. I can't recommend it highly enough, and it was very helpful for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
A book worthy of any math student's library. Truly an exceptional help in grasping the fundamentals of Algebra in clear, direct terms. Couldn't be better.

2-0 out of 5 stars too vague

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, systematic way of looking at word problems
I am taking a college-level algebra class to fulfill some pre-reqs.I really regret that my high school algebra texts never devoted a full section on word problems, as this book does.I see now that's why I never really "got" them. This book categorizes the problems by type and offers a systematic method of setting up each type. That's what I needed all along!

The only negative about the book is that there are a couple of types of problems for which the author didn't develop a drawing or chart. That's too bad, but the book has helped me immensely overall.
