Book Description

Designed for the three-semester calculus course for math and science majors, Calculus continues to offer instructors and students new and innovative teaching and learning resources. This was the first calculus text to use computer-generated graphics, to include exercises involving the use of computers and graphing calculators, to be available in an interactive CD-ROM format, to be offered as a complete, online calculus course, and to offer a two-semester Calculus I with Precalculus text. Every edition of the series has made the mastery of traditional calculus skills a priority, while embracing the best features of new technology and, when appropriate, calculus reform ideas. Now, the Eighth Edition is the first calculus program to offer algorithmic homework and testing created in Maple so that answers can be evaluated with complete mathematical accuracy.

Two primary objectives guided the authors in writing this book: to develop precise, readable materials for students that clearly define and demonstrate concepts and rules of calculus and to design comprehensive teaching resources for instructors that employ proven pedagogical techniques and saves the instructor time. The Eighth Edition continues to provide an evolving range of conceptual, technological, and creative tools that enable instructors to teach the way they want to teach and students to learn they way they learn best.

  • The explanations, theorems, and definitions have been thoroughly and critically reviewed. Additionally, the exercise sets have been carefully and extensively examined to ensure they cover all calculus topics appropriately.
  • Questions involving skills, writing, critical thinking, problem-solving, applications, and real-data applications are included throughout the text. Exercises are presented in a variety of question formats, including matching, free response, true/false, modeling, and fill-in the blank.
  • The Eduspace online resources have been integrated into a comprehensive learning system that combines numerous dynamic calculus resources with online homework and testing materials. Eduspace with eSolutions combines all the features of Eduspace with an electronic version of the textbook exercises and the complete solutions to the odd-numbered text exercises, providing students with a convenient and comprehensive way to do homework and view the course materials.
  • The Integrated Learning System addresses the changing needs of today's instructors and students. Recognizing that the calculus course is presented in a variety of teaching and learning environments, the program resources are available in print, CD-ROM, and online formats.
  • SMARTHINKING online tutoring brings students real-time, online tutorial support when they need it most.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Text - Best in the Market
Larson and Hostetler's math textbooks are the best available, hands down. The calculus text is no exception. With clear pedagogy, lucid explanations, carefully graded problem sets, and concrete applications, the 8th edition of Calculus is simply the best calculus book available. Period.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick service
This was needed for my sun's class and he received it very quickly. The condition of the book was excellent.

3-0 out of 5 stars nothing special
It is hard to understand... by understand I meant you understand what really going on when you calculate something. I am not talking about memorize any method to solve a math problem but understand the math and apply it. The book explains you the method "1" but expects you to know "2" to solve the problems. Try another Calculus book instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars great calculus book, buy it immediately
great book with plenty of visualizations and examples.i do recommend keeping this book after your calculus classes if you end up taking differential equations and partial differential equations, as well as your engineering classes too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned from it
The thing that's great about Larson's textbooks is the fact that the end of chapter problems are so well thought-out.I learned differential Calculus concepts thoroughly using this textbook. This new edition has great graphics and it's presentations are not too "busy".Any calculus text will be a bit rigorous so searching for perfection is probably a futile exercise.I recommend getting Volumes I and II of the Study Guide/Solutions manual. FYI: You can purchase instructional DVD's correlated to this calculus text from the Houghton-Mifflin website. I paid about $50 for a DVD set and they're great for reinforcing concepts from each section. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars not so bad, IMO
I didn't think this book was so bad. There are enough examples & lots & lots of problems ranging from simple computations to actual proofs (like that e is irrational, for example). The explanation is fairly clear also. Off the top of my head, topics for 1st year in this book include functions, continuity, limits, derivatives, applications of the derivative (lots of word problems), Riemann integration, applications of integration (like separable ODEs, volumes), techniques of integration (partial fractions, parts, trig substitution, etc). The stuff I did in 2nd year was vectors, differential geometry, partial derivatives, spherical & cylindrical coordinates, applications of partial derivatives & multiple integrals, line & surface integrals.I didn't think this book was as bad as the other reviewers. If this one isn't good enough though, there's certainly no shortage of other calculus texts to choose from.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not good
It is a safe to assume that a book isn't good if the author's(') name(s) is/are larger than the title. Many textbooks suffer from this egomania which can be easily cured with an exacto knife: Just cut around the name(s) and peel.

The book suffers from a poor use of the english language with ideas being presented with too many unnecessary words. Images are labelled with three numbers making the layout confusing i.e. "Fig. 14.9.5" This book has a sloppy finish to it and will only waste your time. Integrated Physics and Calculus is a much better buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Former Penney Student's Perspective
If you are expecting to learn calculus on your own, this is probably not the book for you. However, if used by a competent lecturer, this is a very good textbook to learn the basics of calculus from. The problems assigned to each section are EXCELLENT for driving home the concepts presented.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Student's perspective
I took a math class using this book and it was frustrating. The problems were challenging which was good, but the support offered by the book was poor.If you needed to understand something you couldn't use the book tohelp you out.All it did was spit out a few equations and inconsistentderivations of them.I found the book very frustrating and if you'relooking to learn math skills I'd recommend something else. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I bought a Student Solution Manual in the hopes that it would contain solutions that supplement the text. However, this book only contains the same solutions that are in the text, the only difference being explanation is provided on a few of the problems for each chapter (usually the more involved ones). If you are looking for solutions to check your work for the even problems, this will not help you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Calculus and Analytic Geometry:Student Solution Manual, Part
The examples worked in this manual are a great help when used along side of the text book.A must have for everyone purchasing the test book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Last of A Dying Breed
This is a classic textbook which introduces students to the fundamentalsof analytic geometry. In order to understand calculus, one must have athorough background in analytic geometry.Unfortunately, the current trendin math publishing is to forgo this great subject and present students withan motley mix of topics in a course called PreCalculus. Trigonometry andanalytic geometry end up getting the short shrift, with greater emphasisbeing placed on algebraic manipulation. This is a tragic loss for studentson a number of levels.Theyneed analytic geometry in order to succeed ineven first semester calculus, and yet for many analytic geometry isrelegated to the second or third semester of a calculus class in college,or in one chapter (or less) in a precalculus book! Also, the analyticgeometry allows the high school student a glimpse of mathematical beauty,of how things in mathematics work together: that mathematics holds up as asubject and is not just an assortment of tricks for various situations.Hopefully, the trend will turn around and this will not be the last of adying breed: that others will continue to offer and write expository workson this subject for the benefit ofstudents who wish to continue on tohigher mathematics. ... Book Description

Designed for the three-semester course for math and science majors, the Larson/Hostetler/Edwards series continues its tradition of success by being the first to offer both an Early Transcendental version as well as a new Calculus with Precalculus text. This was also the first calculus text to use computer-generated graphics (Third Edition), to include exercises involving the use of computers and graphing calculators (Fourth Edition), to be available in an interactive CD-ROM format (Fifth Edition), and to be offered as a complete, online calculus course (Sixth Edition). Every edition of the book has made the mastery of traditional calculus skills a priority, while embracing the best features of new technology and, when appropriate, calculus reform ideas. The Seventh Edition also expands its support package with an all-new set of text-specific videos.

  • P.S. Problem-Solving Sections, an additional set of thought-provoking exercises added to the end of each chapter, require students to use a variety of problem-solving skills and provide a challenging arena for students to work with calculus concepts.
  • Getting at the Concept Exercises added to each section exercise set check students' understanding of the basic concepts. Located midway through the exercise set, they are both boxed and titled for easy reference.
  • Review Exercises at the end of each chapter have been reorganized to provide students with a more effective study tool. The exercises are now grouped and correlated by text section, enabling students to target concepts requiring review.
  • The icon "IC" in the text identifies examples that appear in the Interactive Calculus 3.0 CD-ROM and Internet Calculus 2.0 web site with enhanced opportunities for exploration and visualization using the program itself and/or a Computer Algebra System.
  • Think About It conceptual exercises require students to use their critical-thinking skills and help them develop an intuitive understanding of the underlying theory of the calculus.
  • Modeling Data multi-part questions ask students to find and interpret mathematical models to fit real-life data, often through the use of a graphing utility.
  • Section Projects, extended applications that appear at the end of selected exercise sets. may be used for individual, collaborative, or peer-assisted assignments.
  • True or False? Exercises, included toward the end of many exercises sets, help students understand the logical structure of calculus and highlight concepts, common errors, and the correct statements of definitions and theorems.
  • Motivating the Chapter sections opening each chapter present data-driven applications that explore the concepts to be covered in the context of a real-world setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars top notch and all inclusive book
practically free too
I am using this to study for the GRE and GMAT to prepare for grad school math

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent text but by no means excellent.
This was the book I used in high school, and while it was certainly decent, it would not have been very useful without the aid of my excellent calculus teacher.

I have many of the same criticisms of this book as I do of the Stewart, although I do think this book does a slightly better job in the very beginning, for example, when introducing the limit, and also in that it leaves out some of the extraneous and confusing attempts at applications in the first chapter.I still think the book contains too many confusing applications from the second chapter onward.I do think the book would be improved by having a completely separate section covering the definition of the limit, however.

I like the prose in the examples.I like the presentation of some of the material from multivariable calculus. But again, this book is like a typical intro calc book--it's not rigorous enough, has too much brute force, too many applications, not enough mathematics, not enough creativity. This book doesn't cultivate the awe and wonder that should be present when a student learns calculus.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of it's kind.
Every concept and example is explained with just the right amount of words and visual aids. The author has talent. The talent is his ability to pass the relevant information straight to the center of your brain, and the ability to bind the whole subject together.

In comparison, Stewart's Calculus book is just a compilation of information. With each new edition, Stewart adds more footnotes and side notes. The footnotes and side notes really only serve as a bandage to prevent the information of his book from falling apart.

While Larson is presenting us with a complete and beautiful product, Stewart is scrambling to keep his product at par.

Larson's book is the best all purpose high school and undergraduate book of it's kind. The website of the book is great and holds interesting additional information.

Some cons. The book is big heavy and expensive. Some key precalculus reviews are missing in the main book, however, they are available on the book's website.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Calculus Book
This is the best Calculus book, or for that matter, one of the best text books I have ever studied. I transfered colleges and have had the opportunity to see other Calc books. This book (with the solution manual) explains the problems thoroghly and each problem section starts with the very easy, and the gradually moves into the challenging. It also works in real world applications to make your study of the subject much more interesting. I give the book an A+.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best calculus books ever
A wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and beginning differential equations on their own or to go back and fill in holes.

This book leaves you wishing you had seen it earlier in life. I found myself smacking my forehead at how simply and powerfully it implants information into the readers mind. So clearly written and fun to read that since the early 1990s when it came out I have gone through many copies by giving it away to students and friends who wanted to learn or become better at calculus and mathematics in their spare time (and with little time to spare). I got online to buy another copy and was surprised it had not yet been reviewed!

Every chapter starts with a succinct lesson and then jumps into many worked examples that build upon each other until the reader is dizzyingly skilled. Little cartoon owls give special insight and mnemonic phrases in key places. Each chapter ends with exercises and solutions to odd numbered problems.

This book is ideal for people who have even moderate skill at Algebra I/II. College level physicists, engineers, and other applied scientists will really enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well book, good explainations
I am currently using this book for AP Calculus AB and I found out that this book has very detailed explanation of examples and all concepts. Well sometimes it is a bit too wordy, lol. Very well for self learners. I bought this book personally and also using the school textbook Calculus graphically, numerically and algebractly by Finney. Personally, I feel this book is better than the school one since it actually have detailed explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is undoubtedly the best calculus book I have seen. Clear explanations with diagrams. I love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Review on The best Calculus book out there
Let me start by saying that I have tried reading several Calculus books and have found them to be either too vague and/or not analytical enough from a student's point of view. But with Howard Anton's Calculus books, especially if used in conjunction with the Comapnion books, learning calculus becomes very imformative and fun. This book helped me get A's in Calculus 1 and 2.This is indeed, a GREAT book.Unfortunately, I've lost it.Hence, I'm here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calculus for the common person
The narative introduction of this classic piece of mathematical history was compelling and heart-wrenching. Until I read this book, I had never imagined the romantic and timeless nature of Calculus. I can now not imagine my life without this book, which is a daily source of strength and rejuvenation. My heart is moved on a daily basis by the effect that this work has on the lives and attitudes of my students, a phenomenon unparalleled in my history with mathematics. I OWE MY LIFE TO THIS BOOK!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars More Problems?
This is not a good book. However, I must admit that it really isn't that bad. The examples are clear, and the solutions are given, with decent explanations.

The bad thing about Calculus with this Study Guide isn'tthat it's poorly written, the bad thing is that it's practically useless. The problems are of the same type as those found in Calculus with AnalyticGeometry, and they are explained in the same dry way. In other words, theCalculus with Analytic Geometry Study Guide doesn't really help to clear upany confusion, nor does it serve as a "guide" of some sort--it'ssimply more textbook problems!

Book Description
This textbook, for an undergraduate course in modern algebraic geometry, recognizes that the typical undergraduate curriculum contains a great deal of analysis and, by contrast, little algebra. Because of this imbalance, it seems most natural to present algebraic geometry by highlighting the way it connects algebra and analysis; the average student will probably be more familiar and more comfortable with the analytic component. The book therefore focuses on Serre's GAGA theorem, which perhaps best encapsulates the link between algebra and analysis. GAGA provides the unifying theme of the book: we develop enough of the modern machinery of algebraic geometry to be able to give an essentially complete proof, at a level accessible to undergraduates throughout. The book is based on a course which the author has taught, twice, at the Australian National University. ... Read more
