2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Kindle Formatting
This book is much better in the printed format. No question that the content is perfect for the intended audience, but you don't get many pages into the Kindle edition before you discover missing elements and poorly formatted equations- a disappointing purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great "Index" Book!
I've bought all three editions of the book and it just keeps getting better.

I tend to use it as an Index book .. its is so broad in coverage that you can use it to link into deeper material as you read.Or as an Index into Wikipedia.

It is not difficult for folks who've taken the material earlier, it really is a refresher. If you are reasonably familiar with basic algebra, linear algebra and calculus, you could likely learn the additional topics in the book.

I find the examples, with their answers in the back of the book, quite useful.

Really a superb addition to your toolbox!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good refresher
This book is only useful if you have already taken the course material prior. It's been years since I've seen some of the topics and so the refresher may not be sufficient enough for me to re-acquaint myself to the material. But otherwise, it is a great reference that highlights the material in an easy to follow manner. I would recommend this as use for a quick reference and memory jogger.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice refresher, and useful as a reference, too.
It's been a few years since I graduated from college, and although I use mathematics every day in my work, I've realized, over the years, that I don't use some aspects of mathematics very much (formal proofs, for example) and that I've become a bit rusty in some areas.Mathematics has always been one of my passions, though, so when I found this book I bought it with the hope that reading it would help me brush up.I wasn't disappointed.

This book is, as the title says, a refresher. It's intended for the reader who has already complete course work in the material, but wants to review it, or use it possibly as a reference.Fanchi's book covers most branches of mathematics that the typical undergraduate is likely to encounter, with a few notable exceptions. There is no discussion about tensors and nothing on things like topology. The book's chapters follow what is probably the traditional route many of us took in our introduction to mathematics. The first chapter is a review of algebra, followed by geometry, trigonometry, and hyperbolic functions. These are followed by analytic geometry, linear algebra, and calculus (broken into chapters dealing with differential calculus, partial derivatives, integrals, and ordinary differential equations).

Since this is a refresher book, the author assumes that the reader has already been exposed, either through experience or course work, to the subjects being covered. So, the material is not introduced the way it typically is found in traditional texts. There is, for example, relatively little developmental material leading up to key concepts. This is both expected and appropriate.

The book excels in several areas, including the use of examples, which are found liberally throughout the text.I highly recommend readers work through these exercises, especially since many of them have solutions that are, themselves, important and useful material. Each exercise comes complete with worked-out solutions in the back of the book, so if you want, you can use this as a very effective book for self-education, almost as if you were going back to school to take a refresher course.

As with any book, reliability and accuracy is critical.Especially for a reference-type book that you are likely to use when you don't have a lot of time to question, or check, the accuracy of the material.Fanchi does an excellent job in this regard; I found almost no errors (and none that were serious).Another thing I look for in a reference book is a good index.I know that the next time I pick it up, it'll be because I remember reading something in it, and I know the answer I'm looking for is in there somewhere, but I cannot remember the page. The first place I'll go is the index, and with a good one (like the one in Fanchi's book) I should be able to track down the solution without too much wasted time.

There were a couple of pleasant surprises in this book. One was the three chapters on probability and statistics. The other was the section (in the chapter on ordinary differential equations) dealing with nonlinear dynamics and chaos.Frankly, I was surprised to see the subject of chaos discussed in this book at all (especially since tensors are not).My only complaint is that there is not an entire chapter devoted to the subject.

The book is easy to read, and well organized.I found it very enjoyable. It's the sort of book that you can easily read for an hour, cover 20 or 30 pages, and not feel too exhausted - if, that is, you are reading it as a review. However, as I said, I'd not recommend this as an introductory text for any of these subjects (and I think the author, by reason of his choice of title, would agree).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Indeed this is an excellent and unique reference.I have used it as a math review for the Professional Engineer examination.I would love to see an expanded 2nd edition that would perhaps cover the material more in depth(e.g., more sample problems) without making the volume too ponderous. Anyone would be hard pressed to find a more concise and useful reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars really good
I will give five stars for this really good book. This is the best math book written for chemists, which I know.

In each chapter of this book after really good introduction you can find plenty of really good and properly chosen exercises to practise, which are really helpful in studying.

Simply, Really good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful texrtbook
This is such a good book for those that need the extra help formulating and understanding what is being taught in Chemistry. A very beneficial book.
Every University should have this text book in their library.

4-0 out of 5 stars I good book to recall my mathematics
i haven't learned math for several years and this is a good book for me to recall them and also give me new knowledge relate to chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chemistry Maths Book
It is hard to find a book that covers this material and this is a great book for anyone needing extra help with the math portion of chemistry

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Bible"
If you are an undergraduate (or even post-grad) student in any of the physical sciences then the best book you could ever buy for getting on top of math would have to be this book. Having come from a shaky back-ground in math ( it used to be my worst subject and my pet-hate) the book laid out the theory and the knowledge requisite for most, if not all, the theory behind physical chemistry. In fact this book is better than any undergrad math text I have ever come across and it's a special treat for the chem student because he goes over things you learn without really knowing why and he reinforces things later on- he really does build on concepts so that you don't forget them a week later. He also makes the subject interesing with little anecdotes and such- but not the type you come across in your standard highschool text with a grey drawing of a dead bloke in a bedsheet. In short this book is the bible for any student wanting to do a chem major and succeed in research- it's all you know you need and all you won't know you'll need til after you've read it. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Miscalculations
If you are writing a book that is solely text and you misspell a word, the concept will still be clear from the context of what is being written.

However when you are writing a technical book where math is being manipulated and you write 12 instead of 10 it is unacceptable.

It is diffcult to determine if the initial number was correct or the subsequent number is.Half the problem is in one number and half the problem is in the second number. You can just assert one of them but there is still a question in you mind about the book's answer.

There is no errata sheet for this book on the McGraw-Hill web site. You will not get as much from this book as you expect, due to the errors. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Meldrum, J.D.P., Wreath products of groups and semigroups.
Wreath products have been used in many areas of group theory as well as of semigroup theory for many years. Nevertheless so far there has been no monograph devoted to this important construction. This is a reason why thisbook will be interesting for specialists in mentioned fields. The bookconsists of two parts devoted to wreath products of groups and semigroupsrespectively. The basic approach here in this parts are permutation groupsand transformation semigroups as the constituents of the considered wreathproducts. Some familiarity with group theory will be important since quitea few concepts are used without explication or definition, especially forsome parts of notation this may be inconvenient for some readers.References, far from being complete, are sometimes just mentioned but donot appear anywhere in the text, which the author himself points out. ... Product Description
The contact of one deformable body with another lies at the heart of almost every mechanical structure. Here, in a comprehensive treatment, two of the field's leading researchers present a systematic approach to contact problems. Using variational formulations, Kikuchi and Oden derive a multitude of results, both for classical problems and for nonlinear problems involving large deflections and buckling of thin plates with unilateral supports, dry friction with nonclassical laws, large elastic and elastoplastic deformations with frictional contact, dynamic contacts with dynamic frictional effects, and rolling contacts. This method exposes properties of solutions obscured by classical methods, and it provides a basis for the development of powerful numerical schemes.

Among the novel results presented here are algorithms for contact problems with nonlinear and nonlocal friction, and very effective algorithms for solving problems involving the large elastic deformation of hyperelastic bodies with general contact conditions. Includes detailed discussion of numerical methods for nonlinear materials with unilateral contact and friction, with examples of metalforming simulations. Also presents algorithms for the finite deformation rolling contact problem, along with a discussion of numerical examples.

Product Description
Presenting new results along with research spanning five decades, Fractional Cauchy Transforms provides a full treatment of the topic, from its roots in classical complex analysis to its current state. Self-contained, it includes introductory material and classical results, such as those associated with complex-valued measures on the unit circle, that form the basis of the developments that follow. The authors focus on concrete analytic questions, with functional analysis providing the general framework.

After examining basic properties, the authors study integral means and relationships between the fractional Cauchy transforms and the Hardy and Dirichlet spaces. They then study radial and nontangential limits, followed by chapters devoted to multipliers, composition operators, and univalent functions. The final chapter gives an analytic characterization of the family of Cauchy transforms when considered as functions defined in the complement of the unit circle.

Product Description
With its important applications in a broad range of real-world problems, building a strong foundation in vector analysis is an essential part of the future engineer's education. Too often, however, the subject is treated only briefly in general calculus or engineering mathematics courses, and those treatments tend to be focused on theory rather than practical applications.Applied Vector Analysis richly illustrates the application of vector calculus to physical problems. The authors clearly explain the theory, but focus on its application with an abundance of worked practical examples and exercises drawn from fluid mechanics, electromagnetic theory, and Maxwell's wave and heat equations. Developed from class notes used over many years of teaching vector analysis, this book is an ideal text for a one-semester course for senior undergraduate or graduate engineering students. With its bibliography and convenient appendix of vector formula, Applied Vector Analysis will also provide a valuable reference for graduate students and professional engineers. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unfinished
This book is small, expensive and relatively bad. While there are plenty of errors to be annoyed by (everything from incorrect solutions to syntax errors in the mathematics), my main qualm with the book comes from the poorly motivated text. While the underlying structure is suitable, the overall exposition is crap. The text reads like lecture notes, and I don't think it is quite up to the standard of a textbook. The exercises also need some work; there should be more exercises that are more interesting. As a mathematics major I am not all too impressed with it, but a student of an applied science may like it more. Although in this form I don't think it is suitable for any audience.

If you want to learn Vector Calculus, I would suggest the multivariable/vector analysis sections of Stewart's Calculus text. That is where I learned the material. Vector Calculus by Marsden also seems promising, but I have not read it all yet. ... Read more

Product Description
"The Generalized Feller Equation and Related Topics", a summary account of this subject, deals with a particular Fokker-Planck equation and with its solutions and their structure. The source solution and certain singular solutions are of primary interest. The diffusion and drift coefficients depend on the space variable by power laws and on four parameters. Important related equations are derived. The source solution is used in the construction of integral transform initial conditions and series solutions. Certain singular solutions are used as convolution kernels to construct bundary conditions. Bounded and positive solutions are discussed. The book also deals with probability density functions which arise from the source solution as stationary states of the underlying dynamic evolution processes from completely concentrated initial states. The associated parameter estimation problems are addressed. The generalized Feller equation has been established as a mathematical model for a variety of diffusion-type processes in physics, chemistry and electronics. Both as a text and as a reference, it should prove useful to applied mathematicians, scientists, engineers and statisticians working in the field of diffusion processes. ... Although the study of classical thermoelasticity has provided information on linear systems, only recently have results on the asymptotic behavior completed our basic understanding of the generic behavior of solutions. Through systematic work that began in the 80s, we now also understand the basic features of nonlinear systems. Yet some questions remain open, and the field has lacked a comprehensive survey that explores these past results and presents recent developments.Evolution Equations in Thermoelasticity presents a modern treatment of initial value problems and of initial boundary value problems in both linear and nonlinear thermoelasticity, in one- and multi-dimensional spatial configurations. Product Description
With interest in the study of nonlinear systems at an all-time high, researchers are eager to explore the mysteries behind the nonlinear equations that govern various physical processes. Painléve analysis may be the only tool available that allows the analysis of both integrable and non-integrable systems. With a primary objective of introducing the uninitiated to the various techniques of the Painlevé approach, this monograph brings together the results of the extensive research performed in the field over the last few decades. For the first time in a single volume, this book offers treatment of both the theory of Painlevé analysis and its practical applications. In it, the author addresses the soliton and nonlinearity, Painlevé analysis and the integrability of ordinary and partial differential equations, Painlevé properties, different forms of expansion, and the relation of Painlevé expansion with conformal invariance. He also gives a detailed account of negative resonances, explains the connection with monodromy, and demonstrates applications to specific important equations.Painlevé Analysis and Its Applications offers a clear presentation and down-to-earth approach that includes many examples and requires only a basic understanding of complex function theory and differential equations. ...
