Product Description
Get Smart!

This astonishing book shows you how, through the application of simple mathematics -- things you have learned or should have learned in high school -- you can develop your mind to razor sharpness and your memory to steel-trap effectiveness.

In 452 riveting pages, Gerardo Joffe takes you through:

1. Review of Arithmetic: Things you should know, but may have forgotten -- and some very important things that even your math teacher didn't know about.

2. The 16-Level Paradigm of Multiplication: An astonishing journey through interactions of numbers. Here is where your mind will get its initial sharpening.

3. A Few Full Trips Through the 16-Level Paradigm, where your mind and your memory will get their final honing and polish.

4. The Algebra of the 16-Level Paradigm: This is optional, but even those who "hate math" will find it fascinating. This section also contains marvelous stuff about probability, combinations and permutations, "propositions" (earn money with bets!), and first-degree and second-degree equations. It's a goldmine of wonderful information!

5. Final Wrap-Up and Odds & Ends: In this section, you will get your final homework problems, and we will show you how you can get your Certificate of Achievement, and (really!) how you can get this book for FREE! And finally, you will learn how to instantly determine the day of the week for any date in the 20th and 21st centuries. ... Read more

Product Description
Most grade-school workbooks try to cover the full range of topics in one workbook, and as a result do not dedicate enough pages to important mathematical concepts. Kumon's research has found, however, that children find learning easier when they tackle one skill set at a time. With these findings in mind, we designed our newest line of workbooks to help children with one particular mathematical skill set per book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Focused
Great practice if your child needs to focus on subtraction. What I like about Kumon workbooks is they focus on mastery of one thing.Practice makes perfect!

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth it, though not self contained...
Summary: A great resource to help teach your kids subtraction, but it's strictly a book of exercises, drills, etc.No replacement for one on one teaching.

We have our first grader working on this - she does one page each night along with her regular homework. The first dozen or so pages were subtraction review. Then it starts to get tougher. For example, 43-17 = 26 where you have to carry the tens. She was having some trouble, but after slowly walking her through a few problems she picked it up right away.

In terms of skill level it's fairly well correlated to what the public schools target as the grade level outcomes - this is clearly a year advanced of what her school is teaching at first grade level, but a half year head start can't be bad and it certainly wasn't beyond her capabilities.

The repetitive nature of the exercises in this book really helps. We highly recommend it!
