5-0 out of 5 stars The best introductory review in print.
Worth its weight in gold. Covers the principles of every subject area required for board certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Includes numerous lists, tables, charts, and a full set of referenced questions and answers. Downright poignant considering the precipitous decline in America's public health and preventive medicine infrastructure since the day George W. Bush assumed office.

Book Description
An essential introductory text linking traditional biostatistics with bayesian methods
In recent years, Bayesian methods have seen an explosion of interest, with applications in fields including biochemistry, ecology, medicine, oncology, pharmacology, and public health. As an interpretive system integrating data with observation, the Bayesian approach provides a nuanced yet mathematically rigorous means of conceptualizing biomedical statistics--from diagnostic tests to DNA evidence.
Biostatistics: A Bayesian Introduction offers a pioneering approach by presenting the foundations of biostatistics through the Bayesian lens. Using easily understood, classic Dutch Book thought experiments to derive subjective probability from a simple principle of rationality, the book connects statistical science with scientific reasoning. The author shows how to compute, interpret, and report Bayesian statistical analyses in practice, and illustrates how to reinterpret traditional statistical reporting--such as confidence intervals, margins of error, and one-sided p-values--in Bayesian terms. Topics covered include:
* Probability and subjective probability
* Distributions and descriptive statistics
* Continuous probability distributions
* Comparing rates and means
* Linear models and statistical adjustment
* Logistic regression and adjusted odds ratios
* Survival analysis
* Hierarchical models and meta-analysis
* Decision theory and sample size determination
The book includes extensive problem sets and references in each chapter, as well as complete instructions on computer analysis with the versatile SAS and WinBUGS software packages as well as the Excel spreadsheet program. For professionals and students, Biostatistics: A Bayesian Introduction offers an unique, real-world entry point into a remarkable alternative method of interpreting statistical data. ... Read more

Book Description
The Biostatistics course is often found in the schools of public Health, medical schools, and, occasionally, in statistics and biology departments.
The population of students in these courses is a diverse one, with varying preparedness.The book assumes the reader has at least two years of high school algebra, but no previous exposure to statistics is required.
Written for individuals who might be fearful of mathematics, this book minimizes the technical difficulties and emphasizes the importance of statistics in scientific investigation.An understanding of underlying design and analysis is stressed. The limitations of the research, design and analytical techniques are discussed, allowing the reader to accurately interpret results. Real data, both processed and raw, are used extensively in examples and exercises.Statistical computing packages - MINITAB, SAS and Stata - are integrated.The use of the computer and software allows a sharper focus on the concepts, letting the computer do the necessary number-crunching.

* Emphasizes underlying statistical concepts more than competing texts
* Focuses on experimental design and analysis, at an elementary level
* Includes an introduction to linear correlation and regression
* Statistics are central: probability is downplayed
* Presents life tables and survival analysis
* Appendix with solutions to many exercises
* Special instructor's manual with solution to all exercises ... Read more

Product Description
The new Bare Essentials reflects recent advances in statistics, as well as time-honored methods. For examplehierarchical linear modeling,which first appeared in psychology journals and only now is seen in medical literature, is described. Also new is a chapter on testing for equivalence and non-inferiority, and another on getting started with the computer statistics program, SPSS. Free of calculations and jargon, Bare Essentials speak so plainly that you won t need a technical dictionary. No math, all concepts. The objective is to enable you to determine if the research results are applicable to your own patients. Throughout the guide, you ll find highlights of areas in which researchers misuse or misinterpret statistical tests. We have labeled theseC.R.A.P. Detectors(Convoluted Reasoning and Anti-intellectual Pomposity), which help you to identify faulty methodology and misuse of statistics. The second version of the book will include the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) software.The purchaser will be prompted to activate the program and will have six months access to the program as part of their purchase price.This book translates biostatistics in the health sciences literature with clarity and irreverence.Students and practitioners alike applaud Biostatistics: as the practical guide that exposes them to every statistical test they may encounter, with careful conceptual explanations and a minimum of algebra. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics
book combines concepts of Epidemiology and biostatistics. It makes easy to understand how epidemiology is interlinked with biostatistics because in a clinical trial both are needed. I like this book because the language is easy to interpret. It is very useful for those who have difficulty in understanding the concepts of biostatistics. The best part of the book is that the text is explained in reference to clinical research, which makes life easier for medical students and doctors. A lot of examples are given within the text to make the text easy to understand. After each chapter a comprehensive test is given.

To cut the long story short, This book is one of the best for those who have difficulty in understanding Biostatistics.

5-0 out of 5 stars good introduction
This is my husband's second book.It came out based on a course he taught to undergraduate health science majors at Cal State Long Beach.He taught it successfully twice.It is a clear introduction for the novice like me and has a good set of exercises and references for further reading. Mike works in the pharmaceutical industry and previously in medical devices.He brings his experience to bear on the examples and to motive the students to see the real value of statistics to their future profession. His coauthor also taught the course at cal State Long Beach and provided many of the exercises and some of the applications particularly in the area of epidemiology which is his specialty.The book has been slow to be adopted in some classrooms because of thre novel introduction of bootstrap a technique that many instructors are not familiar with.But if you look at the review in JASA you will see that this is a strength of the book and is presented simply and only for the most basic bootstrap techniques and applications.It is worth the effort to learn these techniques and to choose this book over some competitors that just do the standard things and look exactly like each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that has a well balanced explanation with math and english.
Biostatistics textbooks usually either concentrate on the math or the explanations, and end up giving an unbalanced idea of the subject at hand.

Texts that choose to have both as different modules, are generally large (therefore more or less reference), expensive and at times incoherent.

I have come across a variety of texts dealing with the subject, from the popular Motulsky's book, Rosner, Dytham and even most of the Wiley series. I have found that this is one of those very few texts available that has a balanced explanation of stat with "the english of it" and "the maths of it".

In general the book follows the same sequence as standard biostatistics courses offered at second year of university. However it assumes the reader knows very little, at that same token the book is not written in a conderscending manner.

It is so well written that it can probably appeal to most readerships (undergraduate that is). It is not only an excellant primer but also a workable textbook.

Book Description
Bayesian analyses have made important inroads in modern clinical research due, in part, to the incorporation of the traditional tools of noninformative priors as well as the modern innovations of adaptive randomization and predictive power. Presenting an introductory perspective to modern Bayesian procedures, Elementary Bayesian Biostatistics explores Bayesian principles and illustrates their application to healthcare research.Building on the basics of classic biostatistics and algebra, this easy-to-read book provides a clear overview of the subject. It focuses on the history and mathematical foundation of Bayesian procedures, before discussing their implementation in healthcare research from first principles. The author also elaborates on the current controversies between Bayesian and frequentist biostatisticians. The book concludes with recommendations for Bayesians to improve their standing in the clinical trials community. Calculus derivations are relegated to the appendices so as not to overly complicate the main text.As Bayesian methods gain more acceptance in healthcare, it is necessary for clinical scientists to understand Bayesian principles. Applying Bayesian analyses to modern healthcare research issues, this lucid introduction helps readers make the correct choices in the development of clinical research programs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
It is mind-boggling how one can have so many mistakes in a textbook like this. This book was required for our Biostatistics II class, and I am really displeased by all of the mistakes. What is the worst offense is that some of the answers for test questions are wrong. For example, the one way ANOVA problem 7.21 has the wrong F-statistic: the wrong answer. Others in the class have complained about this text as well. This is simply amazing to me, and leaves me not trusting much of the text in this book.

His other book "Health and Numbers" is just as terrible; the professor that used that book for class made a list of the mistakes they found, and us students in that class found many more along the way. I ran into another statistics book that takes all of the procedures step-by-step and really made it simple for me. This book, and his other are not recommended.

Book Description
A clear, consistent, and rigorous approach to statistics at an elementary level, this book's goal is to provide a sophisticated introduction of how and why the statistics processworks. Every concept is carefully and clearly explained, enriched by a mathematical/statistical justification, and then illustrated by at least one concrete, worked example. Beginning with basic concepts, the book allows readers to acquire the ability to understand rather complicated statistical issues, such as linear regression theory and application.After introducing the sample mean and a few other descriptive statistics, the book turns to elementary probability theory, then extends to characterize samples selected from populations. It then explores the accuracy and precision of the mean value calculated from samples, and then presents the chi-square analytic technique. The remainder of the book deals with summarizing and analyzing bivariate data.For beginners interested in statistical methods to understand data analysis; these readers are employed in many areas, including Public Health, Genetics, Forestry, Molecular Biology, Epidemiology, Biophysics, medical researchers, and pre-med students. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to understand
I am taking the biostatistics class at UC Berkeley and for the fist time I understand statistics (I had taken a statistics course before). This book is easy to understand and easy to follow. It explains the basics of statistics with many examples. I really like this book. Now I feel prepared to take more advanced statistics.
Like the previous review, I give it 4 stars because of editorial errors.
I totally recommend this book if you want to understand the basics of statistics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Have to Disagree with Previous review
I am also currently taking a statistics course with Selvin at Berkeley.I took another stats course before this and despite everyone RAVING about how fabulous that class was, I found it made my head spin.Everytime I felt I understood a concept was like an epiphany, unfortunately it would quickly diminish due to more complicated examples and statistical theory.

Selvin's book (as well as class) has erased the mystery for me.I find the book thorough with clearly explained concepts and multitudes of relevant examples.Probability, smobability.Linear regression, no problem.

I'm giving the book 4 stars because of the editorial mistakes, otherwise I'd have given it 5 all the way.

This is the worst textbook that I have ever used for a class, hands down. I am currently taking biostatistics with Selvin at U.C. Berkeley and this book is completely unhelpful. I definitely don't recommend this text for any biostatistics course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bayesian approach to meta-analysis
Dalene Stangl and Don Berry are two of the leading researchers on Bayesian methods and have made major contributions to medical applications. Here they have compiled a collection of excellent papers on recent research into the Bayesian approach to meta-analyses which now includes examination of heterogeneity through the use of random effects models. They contribute an introductory overview chapter and have compiled a number of very interesting state-of-the-art papers by leading researchers. Particularly interesting is the paper by Scott Berry (Don's son) who provides an analysis to show that controversy between meta-analyses and large clinical trials can be resolved through consideration of the study-to-study variability not considered in fixed effects analyses.
The text can be used for a modern course on Bayesian Meta Analysis. I just took a one-day short course from Dalene on this topic at the joint statistical meetings in Indianapolis. She gave an effective presentation using material from several of the papers in the book.
