Product Description
Bayesian analyses have made important inroads in modern clinical research due, in part, to the incorporation of the traditional tools of noninformative priors as well as the modern innovations of adaptive randomization and predictive power. Presenting an introductory perspective to modern Bayesian procedures, Elementary Bayesian Biostatistics explores Bayesian principles and illustrates their application to healthcare research.

Building on the basics of classic biostatistics and algebra, this easy-to-read book provides a clear overview of the subject. It focuses on the history and mathematical foundation of Bayesian procedures, before discussing their implementation in healthcare research from first principles. The author also elaborates on the current controversies between Bayesian and frequentist biostatisticians. The book concludes with recommendations for Bayesians to improve their standing in the clinical trials community. Calculus derivations are relegated to the appendices so as not to overly complicate the main text.

As Bayesian methods gain more acceptance in healthcare, it is necessary for clinical scientists to understand Bayesian principles. Applying Bayesian analyses to modern healthcare research issues, this lucid introduction helps readers make the correct choices in the development of clinical research programs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Biostat Book Review
The shipping service was optimus considering it was outside the USA. I am very satisfied with my purchase; although an used book, it is in pretty good conditions and I saved lots of money. I have been ordering books via amazon since a while ago and so far I have not had a single inconvenient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read yet detailed enough for exam!
This book is written as a review for people have already taken some kind of statistics or biostatistic. The funny unique writing style keeps me focus and actually helps me to understand the material better. People who have never taken any statistic class may have a harder time. However, why would any one who has no statistic background try to read a book titles "Biostatistics." There are alway those Dummy books. Even people with no statistic background but with some mathematics background will appreciate this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure
Although I have long since graduated to much less easygoing fare, I love this book. When I was a confused and clueless medical student, this was the first text that helped me to come to terms with biostatistical concepts.

If you have a background in psychology or other softer sciences, are facing your first biostatistics class, and find other texts a bit scary or obscure, this is definitely worth a try.

The jokes become annoying and the examples a bit garbled on a second read, but I still love this book because of the clarity of its visuals. I also like and highly recommend the chapters on factor analysis and survival analysis, and usually give this book to new students in our lab.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best intro stat book I've found
I took stat 20 years ago, and decided I needed an update, particularly regarding how to calculate sample size:this book was the ticket.A lot about sample size always seemed to me to be smoke-and-mirrors, and WHEN that's so (not always, but sometimes!), Norman and Streiner admit it, saving the learner a lot of frustration. Money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best biostatistics review ever!
I keep a copy of this book in my office to loan out to students who are reviewing for biostatistics exams, and colleagues who feel the need to brush up on their biostats.

The book definitely does assume some basic knowledge about statistics -- I wouldn't recommend it for someone trying to learn about biostats for the first time. It's really best for someone who already has some kind of formal training in biostatistics, but doesn't want to have to dredge through the heavy textbooks for every question -- I can definitely find the answers to my most common questions in this book much more quickly than I can in my formal textbooks.

For those looking for a less technical introduction to biostatistics that doesn't presume a lot of preexisting knowledge, I'd suggest Modulsky's 'Intuitive Biostatistics'. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Solutions Manual Product Review
The whole idea of a solution workbook is to have the problems completed and explained step by step for clarification. This workbook only adresses less than 1/2 of the practice problems from text book.Additionally the clarifications which are given are as cryptic as the text book itself. ......With that said the subject material is challenging and marginal help is still better than none. That's why I rated this 3 out 5 stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced and only half the answers
I don't mind if a company wants to publish an answer key to a textbook separately, but I take issue with leaving half of the problems unanswered.Only the odd numbered problems are answered here, and too many answers are incomplete--skipping critical steps and assuming the reader already knows them.Like biochemistry, learning statistics and other mathematics is more difficult when you are left to repeat the same mistakes over and over. You need the answers in order to learn completely.Since the textbook provides no answer key, this is the best you can do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Notational Problems
I agree with one of the other reviewers -- this book needs editing. I was also annoyed that the authors are inconsistent in their notation for sample size.Sometimes they write, e.g., n1 = n2 = 50, so that you know that the calculated value is "per arm".But other times, they just write, e.g., n = 50, leaving you to guess whether this is a total or "per arm".

3-0 out of 5 stars Requires editing
I found the errors in the book absolutely infuriating! Many typos in the text from the first edition are maintained in the second edition. The typos in both text and formulas in the expanded information in the second edition together with gaps in the development of the information made it necessary to consult other sources to figure out what's going on.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice coverage of typical sample size problems in clinical trials
This is the second edition of a very popular book on sample size estimation that is a valuable reference for any statistician in the industry.we all need to go through such expercises at the beginning of a trial as part of the protocol development.

One disappointment I have with the book is that it does not delineate new topics and other changes/additions from the first edition.Often this is covered by having two Prefaces, the original one from the first edition and a new one from the second edition. The authors unfortunately did not choose to do that.So an owner of the first edition would have to scan through both books to identify the changes.

Another disappointment is the lack of reference to any existing software to do sample size estimation and these days there are a lot of products available. The programs nQuery Advisor and Power and Precision handle equivalence, superiority and noninferiority problems for continuous data. They also provide approximate and exact methods for binomial data.Other packages such as StatXact handle sample size estimation for exact binomial tests as well as for Fisher's Exact test.PASS, S+SeqTrial and East are packages that provide the designs and sample size stopping rules for group sequential procedures and in some cases adaptive designs. Also with the development of version 9 of SAS comes the new procedures power and glmpower that do everything that nQuery can handle.

The value of the book is that it develops the methodology and therefore helps with the understanding of how and when to use the various procedures.Traditional tables that use to be important for sample size calculations are now obsolete given the availability of good software tools.Although the book goes to great lengths to cover almost any application. Most of these applications can be handled these days through the available software packages.

I can definitely recommend this book as a fine reference on sample size estimation for the wide range of trial applications.I would only try to encourage the authors to drop the use of tables and get up to date by recommending the appropriate software for the various applications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars With complete chapters on clinical trials, observational studies, laboratory experiments, survival analysis, and more
It is in the arena of medical research that the hopes for cures to presently intractable illnesses and improvements in the treatment of injuries are to be found. Such research must be held to and conducted under the rigorous standards as any other field of science. Such standards are firmly grounded on statistical analysis of research student results. The need for a thorough master of medical biostatistics is predicated on a mastery of the advances in this specialized field of study. That's why a newly updated and significantly expanded second edition of Abhaya Indrayan's "Medical Biostatistics" textbook has been published as part of the Chapman & Hall/CRC Biostatistic Series". In addition to a thorough coverage of basic biostatical concepts and methods including mean and standard deviation, logistic regression, and multivariate methods, this updated edition of "Medical Biostatistics" is enhanced with complete chapters on clinical trials, observational studies, laboratory experiments, survival analysis, and logistic regression. Of special note is the chapter on clinometric and evidence-based medicine. There are expanded discussions on the relevant subjects of epistemic uncertainties, crossover designs, equivalence trials and studies, hazard functions, and the log-rank test. Additionally there are sample size formulas for relative risk, odds ratio, and survival studies, illustrative examples drawn from contemporary medical literature, and numbered steps for many of the detailed procedures and remarks. "Medical Biostatistics" is an indispensable textbook and a core addition to academic library and medical school research and reference collections.

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
The US Food and Drug Administration's Report to the Nation in 2004 and 2005 indicated that one of the top reasons for drug recall was that stability data did not support existing expiration dates. Pharmaceutical companies conduct stability studies to characterize the degradation of drug products and to estimate drug shelf life. Illustrating how stability studies play an important role in drug safety and quality assurance, Statistical Design and Analysis of Stability Studies presents the principles and methodologies in the design and analysis of stability studies.

After introducing the basic concepts of stability testing, the book focuses on short-term stability studies and reviews several methods for estimating drug expiration dating periods. It then compares some commonly employed study designs and discusses both fixed and random batch statistical analyses. Following a chapter on the statistical methods for stability analysis under a linear mixed effects model, the book examines stability analyses with discrete responses, multiple components, and frozen drug products. In addition, the author provides statistical methods for dissolution testing and explores current issues and recent developments in stability studies.

To ensure the safety of consumers, professionals in the field must carry out stability studies to determine the reliability of drug products during their expiration period. This book provides the material necessary for you to perform stability designs and analyses in pharmaceutical research and development. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars first and excellent treatment of a key topic in pharmaceuticals
When the expiration date on a drug passes, the pharmacist must destroy the items that exceed their shelf life.In a clinical trial, drugs stored for use in the trial can exceed their self life and then must be destroyed.Since the late 1980s the FDA requires that stability testing be conducted to establish the self life of a drug.Products discovered to be ubnstable have been taken off the market. Therefore, stability testing is an important part of the early phase statistical analysis of a new drug.Yet inmy nearly five years of experience as a clinical trials statistician in the pharmaceutical industry I was only once (and only just recently) confronted with the issue. We had a drug that started phase III but in the course of the trial some of the stored samples decame unstable and the trial was put on hold.As the manufacturer of the product we had make changes to ensure that moisture did not get into the vials to ruin the mixture. We were motivated to fix the problem quickly and get the trial restarted. However bioavailability and stability needed to be reestablished.I learned that we used very rudimentary and in accurate tools to estimate the stability from the test batches. This meant the during the trial we could only claim a minimal shelf-life and the drug could be wasted because of the need to destroy it before it "really" expired. So it was with pleasure and excitement that I bought this book.

Professor Chow has authored, co-authored and edited books on every aspect of the statistics of drug development. As usual he is very thorough in his presentation of the topic, the FDA and ICH rules and guidelines and the development of the various options for statistical analysis. This is another in the long series of publications by Dr. Chow and his colleagues. He is always at the forefront being the first or one of the first to present new statistical methods or applications to the biopharmaceutical community.A book that is a must for the bookshelf of any biopharnaceutical statistician! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars sometimes excellent but spotty
The author had some sections with great explanations (like sections on bootstrap) but some chapters were overly simplistic or overly complicated. The mathematical parts were neither simple enough for a non mathematician nor extensive enough for someone with a mathematics background to follow. I think the book would have benefited from discussing less subjects but in more detail. Examples would also have helped. The sections on software omit R, which was probably because this was fairly new when the book was written. Several sections referred to StatXact without even naming the tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars good introduction
This is my husband's second book.It came out based on a course he taught to undergraduate health science majors at Cal State Long Beach. He taught it successfully twice. It is a clear introduction for the novice like me and has a good set of exercises and references for further reading. Mike works in the pharmaceutical industry and previously in medical devices. He brings his experience to bear on the examples and to motive the students to see the real value of statistics to their future profession. His coauthor also taught the course at cal State Long Beach and provided many of the exercises and some of the applications particularly in the area of epidemiology which is his specialty. The book has been slow to be adopted in some classrooms because of thre novel introduction of bootstrap a technique that many instructors are not familiar with. But if you look at the review in JASA you will see that this is a strength of the book and is presented simply and only for the most basic bootstrap techniques and applications. It is worth the effort to learn these techniques and to choose this book over some competitors that just do the standard things and look exactly like each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that has a well balanced explanation with math and english.
Biostatistics textbooks usually either concentrate on the math or the explanations, and end up giving an unbalanced idea of the subject at hand.

Texts that choose to have both as different modules, are generally large (therefore more or less reference), expensive and at times incoherent.

I have come across a variety of texts dealing with the subject, from the popular Motulsky's book, Rosner, Dytham and even most of the Wiley series. I have found that this is one of those very few texts available that has a balanced explanation of stat with "the english of it" and "the maths of it".

In general the book follows the same sequence as standard biostatistics courses offered at second year of university. However it assumes the reader knows very little, at that same token the book is not written in a conderscending manner.

It is so well written that it can probably appeal to most readerships (undergraduate that is). It is not only an excellant primer but also a workable textbook.

This book is a first course in statistics for students of biology. Most of the examples have an ecological bias, but illustrate principles which have direct relevance for biologists doing laboratory work. The structured approach begins with basic concepts, and progresses towards an appreciation of the needs and use of analysis of variance and regression, and includes the use of computer statistical packages. The work is clearly explained with worked examples of real-life biological problems, and should be suitable for undergraduate students engaged in quantitative biological work. "Biostatistics" should give students a sound grasp of the key principles of biological statistics without overwhelming detail, and should allow students to quickly apply techniques to their own work and data. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for USMLE and Class
This is one of the best preparations that you can use for epidemiology and biostatistics. The material is very high yield for usmle step 1 and it is an easy text to read.In the past, this text has been criticized for being long. However, I don't think that this kind of criticism has any merit. The text portion of this book is around 75 pages and can be read very quickly. The end consists of a practice test that really pins down the stuff that you need to know. There are also questions throughout the book as you read.Going through the entire text, I finished it in about 4 hours even with a minimal background in the subjects presented!I don't imagine that anyone would take much longer than 6.Keep in mind that this book is devoted to epidemiology and biostatistics, so don't think that it will get you ready for the behavioral science section alone. It will really help you understand the subjects quickly, though. It has been a life saver for my med school class that had terrible notes and lectures. If you need a boost in this subject then this is the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Know these Vignettes
Know these Vignettes! Nothing more to say. They will be tested over. Period :) Terribly boring subject, but points are points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sleep better before the exam...
Using this review source helped me sleep better before the exam, because I felt ready for the "case-based" style of the boards that everyone kept telling me about. This is a great series, but I don't think it should be used as a stand alone review source. Case-based coverage of topics means that some topics are missed/not covered. However, the topics covered by this volume were very high yield for my exam. Definitely worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Behavioral made bearable
Not a big fan of behavioral science, but this book makes it bearable by focusing on what you'll be tested on and helping you distinguish similar conditions from each other. Good biostatistics section also included. Great information and great figures to help you understand the info. Strongly recommend - the rest of the series is also outstanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Run to the bookstore and buy this one!
I'm not much for writing reviews, but this book and series helped me so much I felt obligated to let people know about it. I'm very interested in psychiatry, which is why I applied to medical school, thus I wanted to write a review on this particular volume of the series. This book is composed of 50 case presentations with questions at the end of each case, followed by the explanations/answers to the questions.

The cases and explanations are superb, concise and get right to the "meat and potatoes" of every subject. After taking step 1, I can recommend this format without hesitation. I also thought the BRS Behavioral Science review book was very good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars could be the bible on bioequivalence
It has been over 9 years since the second edition of this book came out.In that time there has been a lot of new research and developments in regulatory guidelines regarding individual and population bioequivalence.I was particularly interested in the bootstrap confidence interval approaches to individual bioequivalence and for a time the FDA 1997 Guidance recommended the bootstrap approach. But in recent years the old standby, average bioequivalence is back in favor. All these events are chronicled in this book. The book is greatly expanded and contains 4 new chapters and around 100 new references. Most topics are covered in great detail and the text appears to be highly detailed.

One thing that did bother me though was the large number of references to the 1993 paper by Schall and Luus in Statistics in Medicine. In the paper they provide a bootstrap approach that Shao and Pigeot proved was not consistent. It surprises me that Pigeot's survey articles in the DIJ and the joint work of Shao and Pigeot are not referenced and I did not see any disclaimers about the Schall and Luus procedure.

I was also disappointed that there was no discussion of an adaptive design for bioequivalence.I did such a two-stage design while working at Auxilium. It involved sample size reestimation at an interim time point using an AB/BA crossover design.

Nevertheless this book is a fantastic reference for bioavailability and bioequivalence and is definitely worth having. To every method there are numerical examples given with real data. Methods for individual and population bioequivalence are complicated and the authors cover all the complications in detail.

Now even if there were no updates in the first 16 chapters I would still buy the book because Chapters 17-20 are totally new chapters and are very enlightening.I particularly enjoyed Chapter 19.The book seems to be guided by the FDA research and a lot of emphasis is placed on the regulatory guidance and guidelines related to the various types of bioequivalence studies by the FDA and the EMEA.But in Chapter 19 the authors take an independent look and are critical of some of the guidances based on statistical research in the literature. For instance the use of log transformations is brought into question for AUC and Cmax and back transforming to the original scale can create biases when the analysis is properly done on the log scale.

Another nice feature of the book is that all the latest statistical methods that have a place here are mentioned. This includes mixed effects linear and non-linear models, generalized estimating equations, the bootstrap and other nonparametric approaches. Also the complications of ocnfoundiong in crossover trials and the many subtle issues associated with equivalence testing and crossover designs are covered.Nothing is avoided deliberately.

Topics that I was not familiar with that interested me were generalized p-values, the linearization approach of Hyslop et al. for parametric estimation of individual bioequivalence, bioequivalence meta-analyses,and in vivo drug interaction studies for nasal sprays. ... Read more
