Product Description
Almost all real systems are nonlinear. For a nonlinear system the superposition principle breaks down: The system's response is not proportional to the stimulus it receives; the whole is more than the sum of its parts. The three parts of this book contains the basics of nonlinear science, with applications in physics. Part I contains an overview of fractals, chaos, solitons, pattern formation, cellular automata and complex systems. In Part II, 14 reviews and essays by pioneers, as well as 10 research articles are reprinted. Part III collects 17 students projects, with computer algorithms for simulation models included. The book can be used for self-study, as a textbook for a one-semester course, or as supplement to other courses in linear of nonlinear systems. The reader should have some knowledge in introductory college physics. No mathematics beyond calculus and no computer literacy are assumed. ... Read more

Product Description
This book focuses on a challenging application field of cellular automata--pattern formation in biological systems, such as the growth of microorganisms, dynamics of cellular tissue and tumors, and formation of pigment cell patterns. These phenomena, resulting from complex cellular interactions, cannot be deduced solely from experimental analysis, but can be more easily examined using mathematical models, in particular, cellular automaton models.

While there are various books treating cellular automaton modeling, this interdisciplinary work is the first one covering biological applications. The book is divided into three parts: Part I deals with general principles, theories, and models of pattern formation; Part II examines cellular automaton modeling; and Part III explains various applications. The models and analytic techniques described may be extended to other exciting applications in biology, medicine, and immunology.

* Self-contained presentation is accessible to a broad audience; only basic calculus and linear algebra are required

* Careful balance of theory, models, and applications useful to both experimentalists and theoreticians

* Includes suggestions for further research topics

The book is aimed at researchers, practitioners, and students in applied mathematics, mathematical biology, computational physics, bioengineering, and computer science interested in a cellular automaton approach to biological modeling. The book's accessible presentation and interdisciplinary approach make it suitable for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses and seminars in mathematical biology, biomodeling, and biocomputing. ... Cellular automata are regular uniform networks of locally-connected finite-state machines. They are discrete systems with non-trivial behaviour. Cellular automata are ubiquitous: they are mathematical models of computation and computer models of natural systems. The book presents results of cutting edge research in cellular-automata framework of digital physics and modelling of spatially extended non-linear systems;massive-parallel computing, language acceptance, and computability; reversibility of computation, graph-theoretic analysis and logic;chaos and undecidability; evolution, learning and cryptography. Editorial Review

Product Description
Cellular automata provide an interesting avenue into the study of complex systems in general, as well as having an intrinsic interest of their own. Because of their mathematical simplicity and representational robustness they have been used to model economic, political, biological, ecological, chemical, and physical systems. Almost any system which can be treated in terms of a discrete representation space in which the dynamics is based on local interaction rules can be modelled by a cellular automata. The aim of this book is to give an introduction to the analysis of cellular automata (CA) in terms of an approach in which CA rules are viewed as elements of a nonlinear operator algebra, which can be expressed in component form much as ordinary vectors are in vector algebra. Although a variety of different topics are covered, this viewpoint provides the underlying theme. The actual mathematics used is not complicated, and the material should be accessible to anyone with a junior-level university background, and a certain degree of mathematical maturity. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
The text is a self-contained, comprehensive introduction to the theory of hydrodynamic lattice gases. Lattice-gas cellular automata are discrete models of fluids. Identical particles hop from site to site on a regular lattice, obeying simple conservative scattering rules when they collide. Remarkably, at a scale larger than the lattice spacing, these discrete models simulate the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics. This book addresses three important aspects of lattice gases. First, it shows how such simple idealised microscopic dynamics give rise to isotropic macroscopic hydrodynamics. Second, it details how the simplicity of the lattice gas provides for equally simple models of fluid phase separation, hydrodynamic interfaces, and multiphase flow. Lastly, it illustrates how lattice-gas models and related lattice-Boltzmann methods have been used to solve problems in applications as diverse as flow through porous media, phase separation, and interface dynamics. Many exercises and references are included. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In depth analysis of LGCA hydrodynamics. Good reference.
Rothman is a principal in the field of LGCA research, and it shows: the introductory material is lucid and self-contained. The more advanced topics (e.g., the statistical mechanics of LGCA) are also generally well-written,although not self-contained: many readers coming from computer science orwithout a solid background in statistical mechanics or fluid mechanics maystruggle at times. Still, this is a relatively minor shortcoming, and thegenerous references more than make up for it. Overall a good book and agood introduction to the subject.

NB. The authors have a link to theircodes for LGCA; however, the book does not touch on the actualimplementation of the theory: readers who want to model LGCA hydro forthemselves will have to implement and modify the codes without the benefitof much explanation. ... Read more

Product Description
Cellular automata are fully discrete dynamical systems with dynamical variables defined at the nodes of a lattice and taking values in a finite set. Application of a local transition rule at each lattice site generates the dynamics. The interpretation of systems with a large number of degrees of freedom in terms of lattice gases has received considerable attention recently due to the many applications of this approach, e.g. for simulating fluid flows under nearly realistic conditions, for modeling complex microscopic natural phenomena such as diffusion-reaction or catalysis, and for analysis of pattern-forming systems. The discussion in this book covers aspects of cellular automata theory related to general problems of information theory and statistical physics, lattice gas theory, direct applications, problems arising in the modeling of microscopic physical processes, complex macroscopic behavior (mostly in connection with turbulence), and the design of special-purpose computers. ...
