pretty and interesting images
Cellular automata are a fascinating field, and this book summarises some research done on them in the early 90s. The dynamics are described. There are different types of behaviour depending on the given choices of CA. Typically, a specific CA has some parameters, which are then tweaked to scrutinise the CA.

There are many black and white and colour images. The latter are sometimes quite pretty. But even the black and white images often show interesting structures.

The code referred to by the book ran on computers that are now obsolete. So too is the floppy [who uses these anymore?] that accompanies the book. But a diligent reader should be able to reproduce and recompile the code for newer machines. ... Read more

often inspiring, but not self-contained
This book is extremely well structured -as apparent from its table of contents. It describes and motivates the evolution from cellular automata to lattice-gas cellular automata to lattice Boltzmann schemes. It tells its story in a very brief yet lucid way. The text points to valuable references for further reading or for further explanation.

The main drawback is that -after all- it sometimes really are 'just' lecture notes in mathematics (being an aid mainly for those who follow the lectures). *Some* of the important derivations are very short and formal, with implicit mathematical shortcuts, and without giving any physical interpretation of the main formula's. In addition, once too often the reader is referred to the scientific literature -which is not always easily accessible. In other words: the book is not self-contained.

Nevertheless, I truly enjoyed reading the book from back to back, even though I had to work hard to get through some sections.

In the monograph we present certain results of the work we have done in mathematical theory of the classical homogeneous structures {HS; English synonym "Cellular Automata (CA)"} during 1969-2010, in truth with considerable enough pauses. These results form the essential enough part of the HS-problems. In particular, we have considered such problems as the nonconstructability problem in classical HS, decomposition of global transition functions, extremal constructive opportunities of classical HS, complexity of finite configurations and global transition functions in classical HS, parallel formal grammars and languages defined by HS, the modeling problem in classical HS, certain applied aspects of HS problems, etc. At present, the HS-problems is the well enough developed independent sphere of the modern mathematical cybernetics, which has considerable field of numerous appendices.

The HS is a parallel information processing system consisting of intercommunicating identical finite automata. Although homogeneous structures (HS) are used throughout this monograph as the usual term, it should be borne in mind that cellular automata, iterative networks, systolic structures, etc. are essentially synonyms. We can interpret HS as a theoretical base of artificial parallel information processing systems. From the logical standpoint HS is an infinite automaton with characteristic internal structure. The HS theory can be considered as structural and dynamical theory of the infinite automata. HS can be considered as the basis for modeling of many discrete processes and they present interesting enough independent objects for investigations as well. In recent years has arisen undoubted interest to the HS theory and in this direction many remarkable results have been obtained. Much of this work has been activated by the growing interest in computer science and physical and mathematical modeling. At present, the HS theory forms a self-contained part of the modern mathematical cybernetics.

The HS-axiomatics provides such three fundamental properties as homogeneity, localness and parallelism of functioning. If in a similar computing model we shall with each elementary automaton associate a separate microprocessor then it is possible to unrestrictedly increase the sizes of such computing system without any essential increase of temporal and constructive expenses, required for each new expansion of the computing space, and also without any overheads connected to coordination of functioning of an arbitrary supplementary quantity of elementary microprocessors. Similar high-parallel computing models admit practical realizations consisting of rather large number of rather elementary microprocessors which are limited not so much by certain architectural reasons as by a lot of especially economic and technologic reasons defined by a modern level of development of microelectronic technology, however with the great potentialities in the future, first of all, in light of rather intensive works in field of nanotechnology. ...
