Book Description
This is an English translation of the now classic "Algèbre Locale - Multiplicités" originally published by Springer as LNM 11, in several editions since 1965. It gives a short account of the main theorems of commutative algebra, with emphasis on modules, homological methods and intersection multiplicities ("Tor-formula"). Many modifications to the original French text have been made by the author for this English edition: they make the text easier to read, without changing its intended informal character. ... Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive treatment of Gr bner bases theory embedded in an introduction to commutative algebra from a computational point of view. The centerpiece of Gr bner bases theory is the Buchberger algorithm, which provides a common generalization of the Euclidean algorithm and the Gaussian elimination algorithm to multivariate polynomial rings. The book explains how the Buchberger algorithm and the theory surrounding it are eminently important both for the mathematical theory and for computational applications. A number of results such as optimized version of the Buchberger algorithm are presented in textbook format for the first time. This book requires no prerequisites other than the mathematical maturity of an advanced undergraduate and is therefore well suited for use as a textbook. At the same time, the comprehensive treatment makes it a valuable source of reference on Gr bner bases theory for mathematicians, computer scientists, and others. Placing a strong emphasis on algorithms and their verification, while making no sacrifices in mathematical rigor, the book spans a bridge between mathematics and computer science. ... Read more

Book Description
Written by pioneers in this exciting new field, Algebraic Statistics introduces the application of polynomial algebra to experimental design, discrete probability, and statistics. It begins with an introduction to Gröbner bases and a thorough description of their applications to experimental design. A special chapter covers the binary case with new application to coherent systems in reliability and two level factorial designs. The work paves the way, in the last two chapters, for the application of computer algebra to discrete probability and statistical modelling through the important concept of an algebraic statistical model. As the first book on the subject, Algebraic Statistics presents many opportunities for spin-off research and applications and should become a landmark work welcomed by both the statistical community and its relatives in mathematics and computer science. ... Book Description

The theory of Lie algebras and algebraic groups has been an area of active research for the last 50 years. It intervenes in many different areas of mathematics: for example invariant theory, Poisson geometry, harmonic analysis, mathematical physics. The aim of this book is to assemble in a single volume the algebraic aspects of the theory, so as to present the foundations of the theory in characteristic zero. Detailed proofs are included and some recent results are discussed in the final chapters. All the prerequisites on commutative algebra and algebraic geometry are included.

Book Description
The present book is devoted to a study of relative Prüfer rings and Manis valuations, with an eye to application in real and p-adic geometry. If one wants to expand on the usual algebraic geometry over a non-algebraically closed base field, e.g. a real closed field or p-adically closed field, one typically meets lots of valuation domains. Usually they are not discrete and hence not noetherian. Thus, for a further develomemt of real algebraic and real analytic geometry in particular, and certainly also rigid analytic and p-adic geometry, new chapters of commutative algebra are needed, often of a non-noetherian nature. The present volume presents one such chapter. ... Read more

Book Description

Topics in Commutative Ring Theory is a textbook for advanced undergraduate students as well as graduate students and mathematicians seeking an accessible introduction to this fascinating area of abstract algebra.

Commutative ring theory arose more than a century ago to address questions in geometry and number theory. A commutative ring is a set-such as the integers, complex numbers, or polynomials with real coefficients--with two operations, addition and multiplication. Starting from this simple definition, John Watkins guides readers from basic concepts to Noetherian rings-one of the most important classes of commutative rings--and beyond to the frontiers of current research in the field. Each chapter includes problems that encourage active reading--routine exercises as well as problems that build technical skills and reinforce new concepts. The final chapter is devoted to new computational techniques now available through computers. Careful to avoid intimidating theorems and proofs whenever possible, Watkins emphasizes the historical roots of the subject, like the role of commutative rings in Fermat's last theorem. He leads readers into unexpected territory with discussions on rings of continuous functions and the set-theoretic foundations of mathematics.

Written by an award-winning teacher, this is the first introductory textbook to require no prior knowledge of ring theory to get started. Refreshingly informal without ever sacrificing mathematical rigor, Topics in Commutative Ring Theory is an ideal resource for anyone seeking entry into this stimulating field of study

Book Description

For over forty years, Robert Gilmers numerous articles and books have had a tremendous impact on research in commutative algebra. It is not an exaggeration to say that most articles published today in non-Noetherian ring theory, and some in Noetherian ring theory as well, originated in a topic that Gilmer either initiated or enriched by his work. This volume, a tribute to his work, consists of twenty-four articles authored by Robert Gilmers most prominent students and followers. These articles combine surveys of past work by Gilmer and others, recent results which have never before seen print, open problems, and extensive bibliographies. In a concluding article, Robert Gilmer points out directions for future research, highlighting the open problems in the areas he considers of importance. Robert Gilmers article is followed by the complete list of his published works, his mathematical genealogical tree, information on the writing of his four books, and reminiscences about Robert Gilmers contributions to the stimulating research environment in commutative algebra at Florida State in the middle 1960s. The entire collection provides an in-depth overview of the topics of research in a significant and large area of commutative algebra.

Book Description
In this introduction to commutative algebra, the author choses a route that leads the reader through the essential ideas, without getting embroiled in technicalities. He takes the reader quickly to the fundamentals of complex projective geometry, requiring only a basic knowledge of linear and multilinear algebra and some elementary group theory. The author divides the book into three parts. In the first, he develops the general theory of noetherian rings and modules. He includes a certain amount of homological algebra, and he emphasizes rings and modules of fractions as preparation for working with sheaves. In the second part, he discusses polynomial rings in several variables with coefficients in the field of complex numbers. After Noether's normalization lemma and Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, the author introduces affine complex schemes and their morphisms; he then proves Zariski's main theorem and Chevalley's semi-continuity theorem. Finally, the author's detailed study of Weil and Cartier divisors provides a solid background for modern intersection theory. This is an excellent textbook for those who seek an efficient and rapid introduction to the geometric applications of commutative algebra. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars brief, but good
Peskine doesn't give a lot of explanations (he manages to cover on 30 pages what usually takes up half a book) and the exercises are tough, but the book is nevertheless well written, which makes it pretty easy to read and understand. Recommended for everyone willing to work their way through his one-line proofs ("Obvious.")! ... Read more

Book Description

This book is devoted to the detailed study of the recently discovered commutative C*-algebras of Toeplitz operators on the Bergman space over the unit disk. The key point to understand their structure and classify them surprisingly lies in the hyperbolic geometry of the unit disk. We develop as well a number of important problems whose successful solution was made possible and is based on the specific features of the Toeplitz operators from these commutative algebras.
