The authors proceed through the study of CFD in a systematic and sensible manner, starting with the very basics, and building up to useful problem formulations and solutions.

Very little is assumed about the reader's background.Any familiarity with PDE's will make this a very easy book to read.

This book presents some fundamentals of CFD based on straightforward mathematical tools giving fast access to very interesting general behaviours of PDE families. Apart from the introduction of basic concepts, finite differences and finite volume discretizations, the heart of the book lies in chapters 4,6,7 where a clear and systematic methodology to go from PDE to ODE to O(delta)E is presented. The classical stabilities associated to the most famous time steppings are presented. Some other features such as multigrid, splitting, and upwind dissipations are presented in the same clear setting. The book is very well written, clear and straightforward. I hope more advancedtopics will be also included in further editions!

This book is to computational geometrists what the King James Version of the Bible is to christian fundimenalists.Even though newer translations of the Bible are easier to read, somehow nothing sounds quite so authentically like the voice of God than those Elisibethen cadences, written in an almost archaic language....

...similarly for this book.Many times, the descriptions of algorithms presented in this book are made unnecesarily hard by very arcane langauge.

But this book is authoritative and definitive in a way that no other text on computational geometry is ever likely to achieve.Even though there are any number of books which are newer and easier to read, it seems like this the one book on the shelf of every serious computational geometer I know.

This book is a classic, in fact the author's PhD thesis created this field, but this book is too old for any meaningful graduate work.There are new bounds and algorithms on almost all topics, which makes this a somewhat undesirable book.Also, this book has failed to keep me interested in it, while I am reading it...

The ideas and algorithms presented in this book are clear enough for straight implementation in code. I have long experience in developing comercial and production software for VLSI layout applications, which made extensive use of the algorithms presented in this book.
I also use some chapters of this book as a part of a graduate course in VLSI layout algorithms being tought at the Technion, Israel. The contents of this book is well understood by EE and CS students.
I personally love this book, which introduced me into the area of computational geometry and its applications.

Most of the papers that I've read on computational geometry refer to this text -- and for good reason. There's many good algorithms to be found here.

The book only gets 4 stars because it's hard to read. It took me several tries to pick up the ideas in this text. I think the De Berg text is MUCH easier to read.

The book is also getting a little dated. Some of the topics have come a long way since the 80's.

This book seems to be in most University libraries if you have that option.

I have just happened to exhume this book from my library, after it spent some years gathering dust above the shelf. In spite of the long time I have not being reading it, it still retains the full meaning it showed me when I was using in calculations relating radar domain definition. May be the textbook wins by far the comparison to the current vague and inflated computer publications, may be it is not a manager-oriented issue but it is for nearly specialistic use, you find in it clearly stated, and straight, answers to the questions you meet, or at least a definite reference where a more detailed explanation can be find. It presents interesting problems, and explains you how to solve them. I think it is the best you can say about a computer science book. ... Read more

Don't get thrown off by the 'bio' in the title. I use it for computer security - signature based intrusion detection.

This is a very dense book for the serious. The author does not waste any time on trivialities. He gives a brief orientation to the notations and jumps into very intricate algorithms right from the start. You will need to draw pictures or make notes on a scratch paper as you read to follow concepts from one paragraph to the next.

This is a treatise on string algorithms.

A well written text book with an obvious bias to biological application, but maybe most useful for its clear explanation and rigour of string algorithms.

The text sits at the intersection of computer science and computational biology. It centres around the observation made by the author and others that often in CS, one has to manipulate strings of text, which are just sequences of text. While in computational biology, a recurrent theme is how to deal with sequences of molecules. These might be in a DNA sample or in a protein.

Surprisingly, from this simple observation, Gusfield manages to gather together considerable material. Over the decades, computing has accrued many algorithms for text string processing. The book's merit is in presenting those which are also applicable in bioinfomatics. The level of treatment is sophisticated, from the computing vantage. Enough so that perhaps the typical geneticist might not be able to easily follow the narrative. But a researcher with a strong background in both fields might be able to benefit. ... Read more

For some readers, the best attraction of the book is the GUI program that lets you quickly experiment and apply the main ideas. The text is very interdisciplinary, written for diverse audiences, spanning biology, computer science and mathematics. Some aspects of the book may perhaps be too mathematical for some biology readers. Say the Hidden Markov Models, for example. But if you keep at it, you should get able to get the gist of the models. Which is another reason for the usefulness of the GUI. Essentially, so long as you understand the basic math ideas, the GUI lets you sidestep the grotty details and focus on applying the overall models.

It could also be that the book is suitable for a university course. The chapter exercises and accompanying answers are useful, in this regard. ... Read more

The goal of this book is to show how computer modelling can be used to aid the design and selection of materials for different applications in science and engineering.These include designing of metal alloys for structural applications, designing compounds to obtain specific magnetic properties, modeling radiation damage of different materials, and calculating phase diagrams of ternary mixtures.The different modeling techniques covered include total energy ab initio calculations, molecular dynamics, finite element analysis, and thermodynamic modeling using the CALPHAD approach.

The book is laid out in chapters, with each chapter written by a distinct group of authors showcasing a distinct way computer modeling is used to aid in materials design.Therefore, the book is example-driven, with a lot of references to industrial and academic publications.The book's goal is noble, and worth the cause, but the book itself has numerous shortcomings which I list below.

1. Modeling of real phenomena and processes requires an accounting of finite temperature affects.These effects can be explicitly included in the model itself, or data obtained from the model can by corrected for the exclusion of temperature effects.This is extremely important since many properties are temperature dependent / activated.This book consistently failed to address this issue in a quantitative sense.Yes, rate equations and other temperature-dependent formulas are included in the appropriate spaces, but there is minimal mention of how temperature affects are incorporated into a simulation.

2. Size effects are barely mentioned.Calculations of bulk properties of perfect (elemental or stoichiometric compoud) crystals represent the only case where size convergence is not needed.For all other systems, whether it be alloys, free surfaces, interfaces, or thin films, there needs to be convergence of some property (energy/atom, force, etc..) with respect to the size of the system.This is generally missing from the examples given in the text, which is especially disconcerting seeing that the book is example-driven.

3. Comparison of different methodologies. There are various methodologies available to model a given structure or phenomena.For example, to determine the vacancy formation energy in bulk aluminum, one could use DFT with the LDA/GGA, the embedded atom method, Green's functions, lattice Monte Carlo, etc...These different methods differ in their computational cost, precision, accuracy, and robustness.Specfically, different methods come closer to reproducing electron behavior and hence bonding.The different chapters in this book generally failed to give a thorough explanation of why a specific method was used over others, and what are the limitations inherent to that method.This is especially important if the model is being used to select materials for applications.

Clarification of precision, accuracy, and applicability.In the chapter on designing metal alloys, atom-atom interactions between different elements were calculated using Lennard - Jones potentials!Any good modeler can tell you that Lennard - Jones potentials should only be used for modeling noble gas solids, and maybe ionic solids.LJ potentials should never be used to model metallic systems, especially alloys.These examples should have been examined using DFT + LDA/GGA, or maybe EAM / EMT at worst.This book was published in 1999, so the examples included in it were probably worked out over the previous 5 years.Computing hardware and software had advanced far enough by the early 1990s for the relevant authors to do their modeling at a higher level than LJ potentials.

5. Lack of simulation details.The book was heavy on the science and the simulation results, but lacking on the simulation procedure.This is a big no-no.Experiment or simulation, the accompanying write-up should be detailed enough for somebody else to reproduce the results.I do not think anyone can reproduce the results given in this book using only this book and the references given herein.

Overall, the aim of this book was good, and the mix of topics was diverse and appealing to a wide audience.But the treatment of the subject matter was horrendous.I advise against buying or reading this book. ... Read more
