4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
Many of the chapters are very good, and together cover the whole spectrum of exact and heuristic approaches for solving Vehicle Routing Problems. My one disappointment with the book is that, in some cases, details were left out that would have been nice for a beginner trying to learn the topic for the first time (though, to be fair, the very complete chapter specific citation lists do lead you to the original papers where more of the details can be found).

4-0 out of 5 stars The Vehicle Routing Problem - a comprehensive introduction to VRP
Great overview of various Vehicle Routing problem classes and algorithms used for solving those problems. ... Read more

Symposium held in Baltimore, Maryland, January 2003.

The Symposium was jointly sponsored by the SIAM Activity Group on Discrete Mathematics and by SIGACT, the ACM Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computation Theory.

Contains approximately 112 papers that were selected from a field of over 408 submissions based on their originality, technical contribution, and relevance. Papers cover such topics as discrete mathematics and graph theory, including combinatorics, combinatorial optimization, and networks. Although the papers were not formally refereed, every attempt was made to verify the main claims. Abbreviated versions of these papers may appear later in more elaborate form in various scientific journals.

This symposium concerns research on the use, design, and analysis of efficient algorithms and data structures, and on the mathematical problems related to the development and analysis of discrete algorithms. Application areas include, but are not limited to, discrete mathematics and combinatorics; combinatorial structures; communication networks; computational biology; computational physics; computational finance; computational geometry; computational topology; computer graphics and computer vision; computer systems; cryptography and security; databases and information retrieval; discrete optimization; discrete probability; distributed algorithms; experimental algorithmics; graph drawing; graphs and networks; machine learning; mathematical programming; molecular computing; number theory and algebra; on-line problems; pattern matching and data compression; quantum computing; random structures; robotics; statistical inference; and symbolic computation. The proceeding’s content reflects the themes of the meeting. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best but probably not the worst either.
Explanations are overly complicated.Although we're using it for class, even the professor has problems with this book. Some sections are OK, others... not so much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dense.
This book is very very dense. You have to reread everything at least 5 times before understanding it. This class i used this book for was soo easy but reading this book was soo difficult it made the class itself difficult. Good material just very dense and was written very badly. Also sometimes the correct answers didnt correspond to the answers in the back of the book. Actually alot of the time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor book
I used this as the primary text in a University Math/Programming course. The book is very dry and hard to read. While the information in the text is correct, it is hard to imagine a more uninteresting and dry way to present the material. Pseudo code was unnecessarily difficult to understand. Same goes for the main math concepts, which often had to be explained at length by the instructor.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book.
I have one degree in Accounting so I am good with numbers to say the least.

This book is designed for students that already know most of the subject matter they are trying to teach. You will often find yourself searching the internet and math sites on how to work the problems and understand the subject matter.

If you know someone who has this book borrow it to get your homework problems and save your money.

If your college does a semester end review of the class complain that they require such a terrible book and maybe the author will no longer assume you know the subject matter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not recommended for beginners
It appears the authors created this book for people with prior knowledge of Discrete Structures. Most of the exercises require you to research in other places which defeats the purpose of this textbook! In a class I recently took, most of the students actually complained about the college using this book because it makes the subject look harder than it already is. ... Read more

Product Description
Created to teach students many of the most important techniques used for constructing combinatorial designs, this is an ideal textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Combinatorial Design Theory. The text features clear explanations of basic designs such as Steiner and Kirkman triple systems, mutually orthogonal Latin squares, finite projective and affine planes, and Steiner quadruple systems. In these settings, the student will master various construction techniques, both classic and modern, and will be well prepared to construct a vast array of combinatorial designs.Design Theory offers a progressive approach to the subject, with carefully ordered results. It begins with simple constructions that gradually increase in complexity. Each design has a construction that contains new ideas, or that reinforces and builds upon similar ideas previously introduced. The many illustrations aid in understanding and enjoying the application of the constructions described. Written by professors with the needs of students in mind, this is destined to become the standard textbook for design theory. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Limited Book
This book has very few examples and the exercies are do not
follow the logic of the lessons.Very hard to read and understand, simple concepts are made very difficult through this book.Assumes a lot from the reader.(i.e. "Obviously, the answer is 2").Obviously?It took me two hours to come up with that answer!Show me HOW!

Seems like this book was written for those who know combinatorics already, not good for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the design theory world
This book is filling a gap in the literature to learn the basic techniques in combinatorial designs. It is accessible for any student with a minimum background in mathematics, this makes the book appropriate as a textbook onthe subject. The exercises are very well designed too.

The bibliographyhas been carefully selected and any of the papes referenced is classic inthis subject.

For all these reasons I consider that this book is theright door to start learning about the wonderful world of combinatorialdesigns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed, pithy, and clear!
I will have to agree with the other reviewer that it seems as if Truss is trying to cram lots and lots of discrete mathematics into an indiscrete stack of 500pp but i think he has done very well. At least in addressing those who need to skim over the material quickly, though they would love instead to relish on Grimaldi's.

:)

1-0 out of 5 stars Skims the Surface
I am a teacher's assistant for an undergraduate computer science course that uses this book. I have to say that it really is a terrible book for students to learn from who have never had much exposure to non-calculus math and the concept of the "mathematical proof". It skims over topics without providing enough exposition on the topics to allow students to have a fair grasp on the subject. This may just be the nature of teaching discrete math, but there seem to be far too many topics that Truss is trying to squeeze into too small of a space. He tries to throw in some more advanced topics such as formal machines and complexity theory, but only at the cost of having the overall quality of the material be watered down. Sadly, though, from what I have heard, this is the best current intro discrete math book out there. ... Read more

Product Description
Advanced Mathematics and Mechanics Applications Using MATLAB illustrates the problem-solving capabilities of MATLAB in advanced engineering and the physical sciences. The book covers a wide range of numerical topics and discusses the algorithmic methods that can be used for their solution. The applications emphasize solutions of linear and nonlinear differential equations. Linear partial differential equations and linear matrix differential equations are analyzed using eigenfunctions and series solutions. Several other diverse topics, such as conformal mapping, heat conduction, and inertial property calculation for areas, are also included.
The text has numerous sample programs that can be used to solve complicated applied problems. The programs have extensive comments and are intended for separate study without additional reference. Many of the programs presented in the text treat applications not presented in traditional texts, e.g., spline computation of inertia properties of arbitrary areas. Additionally, all the programs are contained on a diskette accompanying the book. This diskette is organized with directories corresponding to different chapters, and a group of frequently used functions-such as those for spline interpolation and interactive data input-comprises a separate utility library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Turned MATLAB loose on a variety of engineering problems
This book begins with an introduction to MATLAB, language and graphics.I found this useful (fprint instead of disp, for example). Many engineering problems are set up and solved using MATLAB functions and m-filesApplications of Fourier Series, theDynamic Response of Second-Order Systems, and problems in ordinary andpartial differential equations are presented. Many of the problems arespecialized (consider the forced vibration of a pile embedded in an elasticmedium, for example).Overall I liked the book, it presents a briefoverview of the mathematics upon which each problem is based, and them-files are well documented.I'm using it in an Applied Mathematics class. ...
