4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but probably won't stay with you
This is an enjoyable early Trek novel. Author, Vonda McIntyre, does a nice job with the characters, and manages to give us a more detailed insight into these characters inner thoughts and motivations without going against what we already know about them from the television shows and theatrical releases. I especially enjoyed the development of Mr. Sulu, showing his relationships to others on the ship. There are also some very nice character moments with the main triumvirate of Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

The plot has the Enterprise circling a naked singularity that has inexplicably appeared, and Mr. Spock is evidently the only scientist who can study this phenomenon. Unfortunately, just as they are getting towards the last few days of Mr. Spock's observations the Enterprise receives a planetary distress signal that pre-empts anything else, and the Enterprise must immediately depart for Aleph Prime an outpost of the Federation. Once the Enterprise arrives at Aleph Prime they are hailed by the planetary prosecutor who assumes they've come to escort a "dangerous prisoner" to a rehabilitation planet. It turns out the dangerous prisoner is Mr. Spock's former physics professor. Also in orbit is the starship commanded by Captain Kirk's former flame.

What follows is an interesting story that involves time travel, love, friendship, honor and trust. I'd end up giving away too much of the plot to explain further, but it makes an interesting and fast moving read. If you enjoy original Star Trek, you will enjoy this novel. Ms. McIntyre knows how to craft an interesting story that will keep you engrossed until the end, but don't expect it to remain with you... ... Read more

Product Description
The Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) has its roots in the Principle of Maximum Entropy introduced by Jaynes into the field of statistical mechanics almost 40 years ago. This principle has since been adopted in many areas of science and technology, such as spectral analysis and image restoration. This monograph consists of five chapters and two appendices. The first three chapters are devoted to MEM and its applications in spectral analysis and image restoration, including algrorithms in practical use. Chapter 4 is concerned with experimental and theoretical analysis and comparison of the basic ideas, and properties and applications of MEM. Chapter 5 presents MEM in mathematics and physics. The appendices provide relevant details of cepstral analysis and image restoration. ... Read more

Product Description
Aryeh Lev Stollman's first novel, The Far Euphrates, was hailed as "radiant" and "remarkable" by The New York Times BookReview. The Boston Globe called his second novel, TheIlluminated Soul, "profound".But Stollman's career began withstories that have appeared in leading literary journals, includingAmerican Short Fiction, The Yale Review, The SouthwestReview, Tikkun, and Story magazine. Collected here, they address the themes he has grappled with so memorably in hisnovels: "the pull of the past over the present and the profoundeffects that one person can have on another" (San FranciscoChronicle); the aftershocks of the Holocaust; the convergence ofscience, the imagination, and the spiritual realm; and the way art canshape our humanity. In these stories, Stollman continues to blend theeveryday with the mystical, the mundane with the extraordinary, andthe waking world with the world of dreams. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars moving
I found the Dialogues of Time and Entropy to be the most moving of Dr. Stollman's works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories full of knowledge, wisdom, and love
It is always interesting to read the short stories of a writer whose novels you love. Aryeh Lev Stollman's debut novel The Far Euphrates won readers from Jewish intellectuals to the judges of the Lambda prize. His second book was a beautiful excursion into the love of a boy for an older woman, strung and stretched over years and a hideous moral dilemma. The stories show Stollman to be a writer ofreal range and will serve as a fine introduction to one of our best writers.

The stories were published before in little magazines over a period of almost a decade. Readers who admired Aryeh Lev Stollman's novel The Far Euphrates and The Illuminated Soul as well as those new to him have a special treat waiting for them in his new collection of short stories.

Some of the stories reveal the roots of the ideas Stollman juggles in all his fiction: the vividness of the soul in a failing body and brain, deep loyalties of heart and belief tested by change, the choices of children as they approach the world with less innocence and more reason than we can ever guess. As ever, the Holocaust haunts his work but no more than the universal question of the survival and perpetuation of goodness in a world of evil. He is interested in the origins of man's goodness and imagination. His settings are in the United States, Canada, Israel, and Germany.

I enjoyed reading the stories and hope that the collection will deepen the appreciation of many readers for this wonderful writer. I think this would be a good book for a book club interested in taking on readable literary fiction. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume contains most of the papers presented at theTwelfth International Workshop on Maximum Entropy and Bayesian Methodsheld in Paris, July 1992. As was the case with the eleven previousannual workshops (the first was held in 1980) this twelfth workshopbrought together leading scientists and `newcomers' involved inresearch activities in diverse scientific disciplines in which thetheory and applications of maximum entropy and Bayesian statisticsplays a significant and fruitful role.
The contributions are presented in six sections: Bayesian Inferenceand Maximum Entropy (18 papers); Quantum Physics and QuantumInformation (9 papers); Time Series (3 papers); Inverse Problems (4papers); Applications (11 papers); Image Restoration andReconstruction (9 papers).
The rich diversity of the papers presented, and the status of many ofthe contributors, attest to the growing importance and vigour of thismajor topic to many areas of applied science and engineering.
This volume will be of interest to a wide range of researchers whosework involves the theory and applications of maximum entropy andBayesian statistics.

Product Description
This book is the result of a collaboration between a biologist and a mathematician. In recent years, different mathematical methods have been used more and more extensively in biology, beyond the applications of common statistical tests that are routinely employed in biological studies. In ecology, for instance, many new measures of diversity have been proposed and used in applications. Some of them are simply proposals without a solid mathematical justification and motivation. Furthermore, when there are too many measures of the same concept, the relationship between these different measures can be confusing. The book deals with the entropic measures of uncertainty, diversity, and interdependence. After all these years, the Shannon entropy, introduced in 1948 as the discrete analogue of Boltzmann's famous H-function from statistical mechanics, has remained the only measure of the amount of uncertainty contained by a probabilistic experiment which not only has all the properties expected from such a measure, but also satisfies a uniqueness theorem proving that its mathematical expression is the only one for which these basic properties hold.More recently, other useful measures, such as the relative or conditional entropy, weighted entropy, and the entropic measure of inner and global connection and interdependence, have been derived from ingenious combinations, extensions, and generalizations of Shannon's absolute discrete entropy. This book combines a rigorous mathematical approach to these entropic measures and their applications to the fields of ecology and ethology with a presentation accessible to readers who are not mathematicians. Those who lack a mathematical background may skip the more detailed justifications of the mathematical statements and formulas. The main concepts and algorithms, however, are meant for all readers interested in using these mathematical tools in ecology and ethology. ... Read more
