2-0 out of 5 stars SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTED
For starters I payed extra to have my book delivered by a certain day so I would have it for my 6:30 pm class. It did not arrive until after 7 pm that day.In the description of the book, it was described as new.The book was obviously used. The spine was quite flemsy. The book had scratches on it.There was no writing on the inside of the book and the pages did not look used.It was just the fact that I thought I was getting a "brand new" book, not a "like new" book. There were "like new" books available at a lower cost if that was what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I bought this book so I could get ready for school in two months. I found the book to be very helpful. The problems and the explanation on how to solve them were explained step by step. I defenately recommend it. Victor

4-0 out of 5 stars good book, very thorough
I used this book as a student and liked it.I noticed a few typos also but they weren't a big deal.I especially enjoyed the section on Markov Chains and Decision Theory.

Try it out if you can find it used.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all cost: I taught out of it
I was forced to use this book as a text for a one quarter course in Finite Mathematics; it is a complete disaster:

* Many typos, even in worked examples. The summary of the Simplex algorithm pivoting rules contains two fat errors. (This is the third edition!)

* Students are utterly confused by many of the explanations given, and I can't blame them.

* Many problems lead to very bad fractions, which distracts from the main procedures

* The Student's Solution Manual simply repeats the solutions for the odd-numbered problems in the back of the book; solutions are not explained.

* Treatment of Mathematics of Finance is a lot more complicated than necessary.

* When introducing sets, the universe U is used before it is explained.

Conclusion: if you are thinking about adopting this text, think again. If you are thinking about taking a class that uses this books as text, think again. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book introduces finite difference methods for both ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs) and discusses the similarities and differences between algorithm design and stability analysis for different types of equations. A unified view of stability theory for ODEs and PDEs is presented, and the interplay between ODE and PDE analysis is stressed. The text emphasizes standard classical methods, but several newer approaches also are introduced and are described in the context of simple motivating examples.

The book is organized into two main sections and a set of appendices. Part I addresses steady-state boundary value problems, starting with two-point boundary value problems in one dimension, followed by coverage of elliptic problems in two and three dimensions. It concludes with a chapter on iterative methods for large sparse linear systems that emphasizes systems arising from difference approximations. Part II addresses time-dependent problems, starting with the initial value problem for ODEs, moving on to initial boundary value problems for parabolic and hyperbolic PDEs, and concluding with a chapter on mixed equations combining features of ODEs, parabolic equations, and hyperbolic equations. The appendices cover concepts pertinent to Parts I and II. Exercises and student projects, developed in conjunction with this book, are available on the book s webpage along with numerous MATLAB m-files.

Readers will gain an understanding of the essential ideas that underlie the development, analysis, and practical use of finite difference methods as well as the key concepts of stability theory, their relation to one another, and their practical implications. The author provides a foundation from which students can approach more advanced topics and further explore the theory and/or use of finite difference methods according to their interests and needs.

Audience: This book is designed as an introductory graduate-level textbook on finite difference methods and their analysis. It is also appropriate for researchers who desire an introduction to the use of these methods.

Contents: Preface; Part I: Boundary Value Problems and Iterative Methods. Chapter 1: Finite Difference Approximations; Chapter 2: Steady States and Boundary Value Problems; Chapter 3: Elliptic Equations; Chapter 4: Iterative Methods for Sparse Linear Systems; Part II: Initial Value Problems. Product Description
The text begins with a review of group actions and Sylow theory. It includes semidirect products, the Schur-Zassenhaus theorem, the theory of commutators, coprime actions on groups, transfer theory, Frobenius groups, primitive and multiply transitive permutation groups, the simplicity of the PSL groups, the generalized Fitting subgroup and also Thompson's J-subgroup and his normal $p$-complement theorem. Topics that seldom (or never) appear in books are also covered. These include subnormality theory, a group-theoretic proof of Burnside's theorem about groups with order divisible by just two primes, the Wielandt automorphism tower theorem, Yoshida's transfer theorem, the ``principal ideal theorem'' of transfer theory and many smaller results that are not very well known. Proofs often contain original ideas, and they are given in complete detail. In many cases they are simpler than can be found elsewhere. The book is largely based on the author's lectures, and consequently, the style is friendly and somewhat informal. Finally, the book includes a large collection of problems at disparate levels of difficulty. These should enable students to practice group theory and not just read about it. Martin Isaacs is professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Over the years, he has received many teaching awards and is well known for his inspiring teaching and lecturing. He received the University of Wisconsin Distinguished Teaching Award in 1985, the Benjamin Smith Reynolds Teaching Award in 1989, and the Wisconsin Section MAA Teaching Award in 1993, to name only a few. He was also honored by being the selected MAA Polya Lecturer in 2003-2005. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.
This is an excellent book to learn about the mathematical foundations of FEM.It is good not only for advanced (graduate) students but also the author gets to try the topic in a manner understandable also for less-expert students or researchers.

2-0 out of 5 stars A book for experienced people only.
This book certainly has a lot of information in it, but it is not lucid at all. This book is a hard read. The presentation is not done very well, and a lot of details get put off to the literature.I would actually recommend the FEM book by Braess instead.Only use this book as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars a nice introductory book
This book is a very nice introductory book on the subject. It has a very nice presentation of the fundamental issues on finite element theory, such as interpolation theory on Sobolev spaces and variational formulations of elliptic problems. Also, it covers some advanced and more specific subjetssuch as multigrid methods and mixed methods for fluid mechanics, where itreviews some of the most used techniques to solve the saddle-point problemssuch as Augmented Lagrangian techniques and penalty methods.

Also, at theend of the book there is a very well written chapter focused onInterpolation operators, where there is a very nice (and very easy to read)presentation of the Sccot-Zhang interpolation operator, and some of theprincipal results on approximation.

Resuming, it is a very recomendablebook in the subjet, specially recomendable for mathematics studentsinterested on finite elements, and researchers in the field. ... Read more

Product Description

This book consists of three parts, rather different in level and purpose. The first part was originally written for quantum chemists. It describes the correspondence, due to Frobenius, between linear representations and characters. The second part is a course given in 1966 to second-year students of l’Ecole Normale. It completes in a certain sense the first part. The third part is an introduction to Brauer Theory.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely concise -- no illustrative examples.
I'm using this book as an undergraduate, so my rating is clearly skewed, as evidenced by the huge "Graduate Texts in Mathematics" on the cover. We've only covered the first five chapters so far, and while the overarching ideas are quite clear, I find the notation confusing. No (even small) reviews of the linear algebra you studied years ago; it just dives in.Perhaps graduate students can follow it all quickly with no concrete examples, but it takes me a few readings through each section to begin to understand what is being said.By concrete I mean a real-world see-it put-your-hands-on-it example, or at least an example involving a few numbers as elements.

Here is an excerpt (so you can judge for yourself how helpful the first chapter will be for you) of a representation example from section 1.2 entitled 'Basic Examples:' "Leg g be the order of G, and let V be a vector space of dimension g, with a basis (e-sub-t)sub-t-in-g indexed by the elements t of G.For s-in-G, let rho-sub-s be the linear map of V into V which sends e-sub-t to e-sub-st; this defines a linear representation, which is called the regular representation of G.Its degree is equal to the order of G.Note that e-sub-s = rho-sub-s(e-sub1); hence note that the images of e-sub1 form a basis of V.Conversely, let W be a representation of G containing a vector w such that the rho-sub-s(w), s-in-G, form a basis of W; then W is isomorphic to the regular representation (an isomorphism tau: V --> W is defined by putting tau(e-sub-s) = rho-sub-s(w))."

The language is very concise and usually quite clear, and I suppose for someone with a sophisticated math background it could be a preferred book. For someone like me who has had only one semester of introductory linear algebra two years ago, I would prefer a more "bridging" text -- that is, one which often and quickly reviewed basic concepts from linear algebra and was less concise in its explanations of definitions and examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Typical Serre, concise, clean, clear.
This is a an excellent introduction to the subject. The book really breaks into 3 distinct parts. The first 5 chapters are a rapid introduction to the basics, similar to what one would get from any indroductory text. They are most notable for actually going through the details on D_n, S_n cyclic groups... The second section (chapters 6-13) gives a more graduate level presentation of the material.Starting with a discussion of group algebras, moving onto inducted representations Artin's theorem (the existence of virtual characters) The third section is Brauer Theory. The book is by Serre so it goes without saying it one of the best if not the best book on the market. His failure to deal with the additional complexities of the infinite group case (which he indicates in the title) is a small problem. He could have spent at least 1 chapter addressing how the results of the book could be extended. The index of notation is a fantastic asset for a subject where notation plays such a large role. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars medium content and poor paper quality
These books have been used (as long as I remember) for practicing problem solutions.Sometimes, the content is lacking, either in quantity or quality. This version has OK content. However, the paper has such poor quality that making notes in the margins is impossible. The quality goes for both the paper thickness and the acid content.

I suppose these are not intended to be keepers?Just one-use items?

Worthless. My class used Reddy's latest FEA book, and the teacher was pretty good with his supplemental notes - meaning they went well with Reddy's book. This book is outdated. I couldn't use to help with any of the hw problems. My advice is to "Search Inside", look at it with Google Books, or better yet find one at a bookstore somewhere and compare to your class text before buying. Product Description
The Finite Element Method for Elliptic Problems is the only book available that analyzes in depth the mathematical foundations of the finite element method. It is a valuable reference and introduction to current research on the numerical analysis of the finite element method, as well as a working textbook for graduate courses in numerical analysis. It includes many useful figures, and there are many exercises of varying difficulty.

Although nearly 25 years have passed since this book was first published, the majority of its content remains up-to-date. Chapters 1 through 6, which cover the basic error estimates for elliptic problems, are still the best available sources for material on this topic. The material covered in Chapters 7 and 8, however, has undergone considerable progress in terms of new applications of the finite element method; therefore, the author provides, in the Preface to the Classics Edition, a bibliography of recent texts that complement the classic material in these chapters.

Audience
This book is particularly useful to graduate students, researchers, and engineers using finite element methods. The reader should have knowledge of analysis and functional analysis, particularly Hilbert spaces, Sobolev spaces, and differential calculus in normed vector spaces. Other than these basics, the book is mathematically self-contained. ... Read more

Ciarlet's text is not the only book to analyze in depth the mathematical theory of finite element methods, but it is still one of the best. The mathematics in the book is mostly self-contained beyond some facts of functional analysis, but readers without an appropriate level of mathematical maturity will find it difficult. The main focus of the book is on elliptic problems, and particularly linear problems. Those readers who want to deal with eigenvalue problems, constrained problems in which ellipticity fails, problems in dynamics, or problems with strong nonlinearities will probably not find all they want in Ciarlet; however, the book has an excellent bibliography with many pointers to additional literature.

Product Description
The theory of finite fields is a branch of algebra with diverse applications in such areas as combinatorics, coding theory and the mathematical study of switching circuits. This updated second edition is devoted entirely to the theory of finite fields, and it provides comprehensive coverage of the literature. Bibliographical notes at the end of each chapter give a historical survey of the development of the subject. Worked examples and lists of exercises throughout the book make it useful as a text for advanced level courses for students of algebra. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and thorough reference
This book is an excellent reference on finite fields. Chapter 1 covers the necessary background material at the right level for someone with a good knowledge of mathematics, but little algebra. Chapter 2 covers the basics of finite fields and chapter 3 goes into more detail on polynomials. The later chapters treat special topics and some applications. The proofs are clear, not over detailed and not overly terse either. If you just want to know the basics then there may be more in this book than you will ever need, but if you want a thorough reference it is recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2-nd edition = 1-st edition
Undoubtedly an excellent book, but comprehensive ... only up to 1983, as this is essentially an IDENTICAL reprint by CUP of the original 1983 book by Addison-Wesley. Don't be misled by the 1997 edition date; second edition = first edition, not a single result from 1983 - 1997.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book for professional mathematician
This is the best book on Galois (Finite) Fields, written by Austrian and Australian professors can be recomended as the most complete reference in the field. It is amazing how helpful it has been to me since time I wrote my MS diploma. Though an instance I was using was borrowed from library, I'd recomend everybody, who is related to deescrete math to have one. ... Read more

Product Description

The finite simple groups are the building blocks from which all the finite groups are made and as such they are objects of fundamental importance throughout mathematics. The classification of the finite simple groups was one of the great mathematical achievements of the twentieth century, yet these groups remain difficult to study which hinders applications of the classification.

This textbook brings the finite simple groups to life by giving concrete constructions of most of them, sufficient to illuminate their structure and permit real calculations both in the groups themselves and in the underlying geometrical or algebraic structures. This is the first time that all the finite simple groups have been treated together in this way and the book points out their connections, for example between exceptional behaviour of generic groups and the existence of sporadic groups, and discusses a number of new approaches to some of the groups. Many exercises of varying difficulty are provided.

The Finite Simple Groups is aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students in algebra as well as professional mathematicians and scientists who use groups and want to apply the knowledge which the classification has given us. The main prerequisite is an undergraduate course in group theory up to the level of Sylow’s theorems.

Product Description
This book provides engineers and computer scientists with all the tools necessary to implement modern error-processing techniques. It assumes only a basic knowledge of linear algebra and develops the mathematical theory in parallel with the codes.Central to the text are worked examples which motivate and explain the theory. The first part introduces the basic ideas of coding theory. The second and third cover the theory of finite fields and give a detailed treatment of BCH and Reed-Solomon codes. The fourth part is devoted to Goppa codes, both classical and geometric, concluding with the Skorobogatov-Vladut error processor.A special feature is a simplified (but rigorous) treatment of the geometry of curves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, excellent for self study
I have used this book for self study of the subject of error correction coding and I find it excellent. It is clear and well organized, with easy language and good examples all along. It does not require a professional mathematician to understand even the most subtle passages.
I read it in conjuction with Todd Moon's other book on Error Correction Coding (also an excellent choice) and although Pretzel's book is much shorter and without examples of hardware, I much appreciated its style and structure.
It would be nice if the author would publish an up-to-date errata of the several printing mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and intuitive
Overall an excellent book on coding theory. Pretzel discusses fundamental codes for error correction such as hamming codes, BCH codes and Reed-Solomon codes. His presentation of finite fields is excellent. He does not simply slap equations down but leads you by way of examples and intuition and then applies them towards the construction of BCH and Reed-Solomon codes. This is an excellent book on coding theory.
