Product Description

This book offers a thorough and systematic examination of theoretical and computational aspects of least-squares finite element methods. The range of topics spans formal mathematical analysis and framework for least squares methods, application of this framework to concrete partial differential equations and discussion of the computational properties of the methods.

The abstract least-squares framework will help readers navigate the realm of least-squares methods while the many numerical examples provide a valuable practical guide to these methods. Most of the necessary background material is contained in several appendices.

Chapter summaries and detailed illustrations are included . Graduate students and computational science researchers will find this book useful.

Product Description
Coherent treatment provides comprehensive view of basic methods and results of the combinatorial study of finite set systems. The Clements-Lindstrom extension of the Kruskal-Katona theorem to multisets is explored, as is the Greene-Kleitman result concerning k-saturated chain partitions of general partially ordered sets. Connections with Dilworth's theorem, the marriage problem, and probability are also discussed. Each chapter ends with a helpful series of exercises and outline solutions appear at the end. "An excellent text for a topics course in discrete mathematics."--Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society.

5-0 out of 5 stars certainly better than decent
This book provides excellent coverage of sperners theorem including multiple proofs ,like the original one by sperner and more concise proofs using closely related concepts. The various proofs of sperners theoremprovides a firm understanding of its connections with many other fundamental topics in finite combinatorial mathematics.Great book for those that have a good grasp on algebraic concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and unique perspective on combinatorics
When one thinks of combinatorics of finite sets, he or she might first think of codes and designs. But this book introduced me to an area of combinatorics which I knew very little about, namely extremal set problems and their solutions which fall under famous Theorems by famous mathematicians: Erdos-Ko-Rado, Sperner, and Kruskal-Katona to name a few. I found these topics fascinating and fun to think about, which is in large part due to the author's coherent style, organization, explanation, and expertise of the subject-matter. Moreover, the author provided solutions to *every* one of the 150+ problems!!! How many math books can boast such a claim? Aside from may be a rough presentation of Lemma 4.3.2 the rest of the book is a masterpiece which I hope will gain more recognition within the next twenty years.

I highly recommend this book to both mathematicians and computer scientists. Although the book has very few "algorithms" in it, the thinking and reasoning about discrete structures (e.g. families of finite sets and multisets) will do wonders in developing the mind of a computer scientist, whether advanced or undergraduate. Yet it is quite sad that many cs departments (and math for that matter) invest little if any curriculum in discrete mathematics. Hopefully this will change at least to the point where the cs major will take two or three semesters of discrete math instead of two or three of calculus. For, as this book demonstrates, calculus is not a prerequisite for engaging one's mind in some quite fascinating mathematical problems related to finite sets.

Finally, it should be noted that Bela Bollobas also has an interesting book titled "Combinatorics: Set Systems, etc...." which significantly intersects with this book, but not to the degree where the reader should think they are interchangeable. I recommend both, and to read Anderson's book first; as I believe this book lays a better foundation than the latter. ... Read more

This second edition develops the foundations of finite group theory. For students already exposed to a first course in algebra, it serves as a text for a course on finite groups. For the reader with some mathematical sophistication but limited knowledge of finite group theory, the book supplies the basic background necessary to begin to read journal articles in the field. It also provides the specialist in finite group theory with a reference on the foundations of the subject. Unifying themes include the Classification Theorem and the classical linear groups. Lie theory appears in chapters on Coxeter groups, root systems, buildings, and Tits systems. This second edition has been considerably improved with a completely rewritten Chapter 15 considering the 2-Signalizer Functor Theorem, and the addition of an appendix containing solutions to exercises. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very educational, very smooth, well written
I have been familiar with this book for over 8 years and I should say this is one of the best educational and practical books you can find about Markov chains. The book claims to be written for undergraduates, but it is marvelously useful for graduate students too.

The book starts by definition of Markov chains and gradually gets into more advanced definitions like absorbing states, cyclical chains, ergodicity ... Then there are these little lemmas and theorems about different aspects of Markov chains like what is the expected time of sitting at a transient state, what is the expected time of returning to the same state, etc. The proofs are nicely presented and there is a whole lot of application for those theorems in all fields that use Markov chains (like engineering, economics, ...). The book is actually abstract math and doesn't get very specialized at any time.

I think this is a book one wants to start learning Markov chains from or keep in shelf for frequent references. I actually used some of its derivations in my own Master's thesis and got a lot of interesting feedbacks on what I did. Now is your turn! ... Read more

Product Description
This definitive introduction to finite element methods has been thoroughly updated for a third edition which features important new material for both research and application of the finite element method. The discussion of saddle-point problems is a highlight of the book and has been elaborated to include many more nonstandard applications. The chapter on applications in elasticity now contains a complete discussion of locking phenomena. The numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations is an important application of finite elements and the author discusses this subject comprehensively. These equations are treated as variational problems for which the Sobolev spaces are the right framework. Graduate students who do not necessarily have any particular background in differential equations, but require an introduction to finite element methods will find this text invaluable. Specifically, the chapter on finite elements in solid mechanics provides a bridge between mathematics and engineering. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent introduction to theory and methods for FEM
I would say I mostly agree with the previous reviewer. The description is pretty clear, despite being a translation, and it has actually proven useful to me during my time in grad school. One minor complaint I have is that some of the proofs he gives are not as clear as I would like them to be.Specifically, I am talking about the sections dealing with the INF-SUP condition. It seems that everyone who writes an FEM book either skirts this whole issue of the INF-SUP condition (which is what a lot of engineering texts do), or they just copy the 'standard' proofs, which suck. But other than that, this is a useful book to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book To Learn Finite Elements From
I recently read this book as part of an advanced numerical analysis class in grad school.I found it to be well written and easy to read.It was useful to me in learning about finite elements from both an abstract and practical perspective.I would recommend it to anyone familiar with the concept of a weak solution to an elliptic partial differential equation and with some experience with numerical linear algebra.
This book could have been improved by including some code or pseudo-code to help get novices started. This is not too severe of a drawback since the text is so well written that the reader should be able to implement many of the ideas without any other training in this area. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A poor outline on the mathematics of business
This book is too elementary for college students needing to know finite mathematics, which usually refers to the mathematics related to operations management specifically and finance in general. Also, it contains some theoretical material on set theory and the equation of a line that seem to be out of place. There is also some material on geometry that doesn't really belong. Instead, I suggest the older out-of-print "Schaum's Outline of Finite Mathematics" published in 1994 by the same author. That book covers a more appropriate set of mathematical topics geared towards the student of finance. Also, there are not the numerous errors in that older outline that seem to plague this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for review only
In my opinion this book should be use for review only, and not for learning Finite math. But maybe that goes without saying for Schaum's books.
This book has MANY errors in the solutions to the supplementary questions, so a knowledge of the concepts is already important in order to identify where the authors made mistakes (in the first 46 pages alone, there are 7 incorrect solutions given).
But like I said, for reviewing what you may have learned years ago, this is a cheap resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book on Finite Difference Method
I first used this book a long time ago (1988) when the third edition of it just came out, while I just got a chance to write a review on it much much years after that. It was a required graduate textbook at an Ivy League college. It discussed in depth the finite difference technique applied to the parabolic, elliptic, and hyperbolic types of PDEs. The thing that I really like about this book is, besides having not too much details on mathematical derivations, it gives examples on how to do the calculations by hand. Thus when one would like to "translate" all these calculations into a computer program one could easily test the results (or expected results). Of course there are a lot more books out there talking about finite difference technique but they are perhaps 20 bucks or more expensive than this book. The only minus about this book is it was printed in soft cover, even though mine is still in a very good condition after almost 16 years! I recommend this book for those beginners on finite difference method. I am currently using this book for one of my course. ... Read more

I did not even receive this item. Waste of my time. I have not received a reimbursement yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars I will use it if I teach finite math again
I have been teaching a finite mathematics course for several years now and have used the text by Sullivan and Mizrahi each time. At this time I am not scheduled to teach the course again, but if I do, this is the book I will use. The primary reason for the switch is the quality of the exposition. It is superior to the Sullivan and Mizrahi book in this area and the examples and section problems strongly emphasize examples that are reasonably related to real life.
The coverage is typical for courses in finite math, there are plenty of exercises at the end of the sections and answers to the odd-numbered ones are included at the end. Colors are used to highlight sections, rows in tables and to differentiate the different elements in graphs. This makes the text easy on the eyes, which is a feature that is often unappreciated. This is one of the few textbooks that deserves five stars for being better than the rest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I used this book for two semesters and it was great! The book gives examples and explanations. The best thing is that I can sell it after the year ended! The professors rarely change the books for math, so i was able to sell if for almost what i purchased it for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Two good books, less than the sum of the parts
While I teach a course in finite mathematics and received this book for consideration as a textbook, I will not be adopting it. The course is finite mathematics only and the calculus portions of the books are unsuitable for the class. My personal opinion is that it is a mistake to combine finite mathematics and calculus into a single class. The two topics are so distinct that melding them in a single class is inappropriate.
The finite mathematics portion of the book takes up the first 523 pages and calculus the remaining 540 pages. The coverage in the finite mathematics section is standard fare and the chapter headings are as follows:

*) Functions
*) Mathematics of finance
*) Systems of equations and matrices
*) Linear programming
*) Statistics
*) Markov chains

The coverage in the applied calculus section is also standard and the chapter headings are as follows:

*) Derivatives and their uses
*) Further applications of derivatives
*) Exponential and logarithmic functions
*) Integration and its applications
*) Integration techniques and differential equations
*) Calculus of several variables

Two additional chapters that are available on the web are:

*) Game theory
*) Logic

I cover logic in my course in finite mathematics, so I strongly disagree with the decision to shunt it off to the web.
The explanations are within the bounds of most students, although it is clear that this is a text for more advanced students as calculus is not a part of finite mathematics. There are plenty of exercises and solutions to the odd numbered exercises are in the back of the book.
In my opinion, it is two books, suitable only for situations where there is a sequence of finite mathematics followed by applied calculus. If only one of the courses is being taught, then the other half of the book is rendered superfluous at best and an expensive hindrance at worst. The cost of textbooks is soaring and there is no reason to force students to purchase more than they really have to. ... Read more
