Product Description
This is a thoroughly revised and enlarged second edition that presents the main results of descriptive complexity theory, that is, the connections between axiomatizability of classes of finite structures and their complexity with respect to time and space bounds. The logics that are important in this context include fixed-point logics, transitive closure logics, and also certain infinitary languages; their model theory is studied in full detail. The book is written in such a way that the respective parts on model theory and descriptive complexity theory may be read independently. ... Read more

Product Description
The contact of one deformable body with another lies at the heart of almost every mechanical structure. Here, in a comprehensive treatment, two of the field's leading researchers present a systematic approach to contact problems. Using variational formulations, Kikuchi and Oden derive a multitude of results, both for classical problems and for nonlinear problems involving large deflections and buckling of thin plates with unilateral supports, dry friction with nonclassical laws, large elastic and elastoplastic deformations with frictional contact, dynamic contacts with dynamic frictional effects, and rolling contacts. This method exposes properties of solutions obscured by classical methods, and it provides a basis for the development of powerful numerical schemes.

Among the novel results presented here are algorithms for contact problems with nonlinear and nonlocal friction, and very effective algorithms for solving problems involving the large elastic deformation of hyperelastic bodies with general contact conditions. Includes detailed discussion of numerical methods for nonlinear materials with unilateral contact and friction, with examples of metalforming simulations. Also presents algorithms for the finite deformation rolling contact problem, along with a discussion of numerical examples.

Product Description
Difference sets are of central interest in finite geometry and design theory. One of the main techniques to investigate abelian difference sets is a discrete version of the classical Fourier transform (i.e., character theory) in connection with algebraic number theory. This approach is described using only basic knowledge of algebra and algebraic number theory. It contains not only most of our present knowledge about abelian difference sets, but also gives applications of character theory to projective planes with quasiregular collineation groups. Therefore, the book is of interest both to geometers and mathematicians working on difference sets. Moreover, the Fourier transform is important in more applied branches of discrete mathematics such as coding theory and shift register sequences. ... Read more

A First Course in the Finite Element Analysis provides a simple, basic approach to the finite element method that can be understood by both undergraduate and graduate students. It does not have the usual prerequisites (such as structural analysis) required by most available texts in this area. The book is written primarily as a basic learning tool for the undergraduate student in civil and mechanical engineering whose main interest is in stress analysis and heat transfer. The text is geared toward those who want to apply the finite element method as a tool to solve practical physical problems. This revised fourth edition includes the addition of a large number of new problems (including SI problems), an appendix for mechanical and thermal properties, and more civil applications. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Finite Element Text
It is the only finite element text that I have, it was required for my current course. It seems to do pretty well with example problems and other material.Tends to skip steps as do most higher learning textbooks, so be sure to brush up on your calculus knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book for understanding FEM within a week
This is a good book for the students like me, who would apply FEM for their research but have no idea about FEM. Usually, we don't need to know too much detail about FEM. We only need the basic principle. That's what this book offers. Instead of complex stress-strain analysis in other FEM books, this book starts from one-dimensional truss and beam problems to two-dimensional plane stress problems. I just read half of the book and now feel very comfortable with a FEM code.

Nice book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Text
A very good book for someone that has never studied this subject before. It's clearly written, and has very good practical examples.I was able to easily work the problems in the end of the chapters using the equations and examples in the text.To use this book, you need to have elementary knowledge of mechanics of materials, basic structural design, and matrices. There is a very good appendix on matrices, which helps you work through that part of FEM.

Product Description

This book provides an integrated approach to finite element methodologies. The development of finite element theory is combined with examples and exercises involving engineering applications. The steps used in the development of the theory are implemented in complete, self-contained computer programs. While the strategy and philosophy of the previous editions has been retained, the Third Edition has been updated and improved to include new material on additional topics. Chapter topics cover fundamental concepts, matrix algebra and gaussian elimination, one-dimensional problems, trusses, two-dimensional problems using constant strain triangles, axisymmetric solids subjected to axisymmetric loading, two-dimensional isoparametric elements and numerical integration, beams and frames, three-dimensional problems in stress analysis, scalar field problems, dynamic considerations, and preprocessing and postprocessing. For practicing engineers as a valuable learning resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent start, poor finish
If you want to learn the basics of FEM, take this book. First half of the book is an excellent introduction to FEM. It explains nicely even the mathematical background, so you can basically "plug and play", make your first FE programs and solve the typical structural problems. But then, authors start to explain everything else regarding the linear FEM, in a very condensed way, and the book becomes very difficult to read. Exercises are nicely prepared and for their solving sufficient help can be found in the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book focussing on the actual method
This is a Great Book for a beginner to FEM and it clearlyfocusses on the method rather than vast theory.

I have found thisbook extremely useful for developing the Java based FEM Software at my site...

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly general, a good start for undergraduate level
As a finite element software developer, I find this book is so designed that it is relatively easy to understand by any level of graduate student. The first few chapters on 1-dimensional finite element equation formulationis the best I have ever seen so far in the "sea" of finiteelement text. Other than that, the overall content of the book is rather"light". It should be read by all users who use finite element.

Product Description
Developed from the authors, combined total of 50 years undergraduate and graduate teaching experience, this book presents the finite element method formulated as a general-purpose numerical procedure for solving engineering problems governed by partial differential equations.

Focusing on the formulation and application of the finite element method through the integration of finite element theory, code development, and software application, the book is both introductory and self-contained, as well as being a hands-on experience for any student.

This authoritative text on Finite Elements:

  • Adopts a generic approach to the subject, and is not application specific
  • In conjunction with a web-based chapter, it integrates code development, theory, and application in one book
  • Provides an accompanying Web site that includes ABAQUS Student Edition, Matlab data and programs, and instructor resources
  • Contains a comprehensive set of homework problems at the end of each chapter

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book...but...
This is a great book for introductory finite elements. All the basic and fundamental stuff is there. Too bad, though, that it's an almost word for word copy of the book by Ottosen and Petersson (1992!). And, as is often the case, the original is just that little bit better - so minus one star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first course on the finite element analysis
The book is intended as an introductory course on the finite element analysis for undergraduate and graduate students. It is written very clearly, so the material could be comprehended by the target audience. At the same time one of the chapters of the book is dedicated to the commercial finite element program, allowing students to understand how finite element method could be used for solving real life engineering problems. Student version of Abaqus is included in the book, which allows students to experience the entire process from creating a model to viewing and analyzing the results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of "A First Course in Finite Elements"
I found the book "A First Course in Finite Elements" very clearly
written and pedagogically sound. It has a very nice blend of theory and implementation of the finite element method written by two
leaders (J. Fish and T. Belytschko) in the field. It provides a
lucidand logical introduction to
(1) Direct approaches for discrete systems,
(2) Strong and weak forms for 1-D problems,
(3) Quadrature,
(4) FE formulation,
(5) Strong and weak forms for multidimensional scalar field problems,
(6) Approximations of trial solutions, weight functions,
(7) FE approximations for vector field equations and
(8) FE formulations for beams. The text is anexcellent reference, that
will be added to the course syllabuses this year for both a senior
undergraduate Finite Element class and a first year graduate class that
I teach at UC Berkeley. The bookprovides a clear and concise introduction
and very well-thought-out overview, to this very large field, and I strongly recommend itto students and instructors that are looking for amodern introductory Finite Element textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first course on finite elements
This book is very well written by two top experts in the field. The authors clearly explain the theory and give practical examples that are easy to follow. The chapters are well organized leading the reader from structural analysis of trusses to multi-dimension problems in Elasticity. The last chapter (available on the web) contains MATLAB codes for the examples solved in the book which the reader can easily modify for his/her needs. On top, the book also comes with ABAQUS CD for students including a self contained tutorial.
All in all, I strongly recommend the book for first time readers. It is definitely worth the bang for the buck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book for undergraduates
This book is an excellent introduction to FEM particularly for undergraduates, or anyone who were not previously exposed to FEM ideas. While there are a large number of books on FEM out there, many of them require quite a bit of understanding of continuum mechanics, pde solution methods, etc. and may easily overwhelm undergraduate audience. This book provides all the essentials needed to have a fundamental understanding of FEM and equally importantly, be able to write simple codes and use Abaqus to solve problems. The authors of the text are two of the best and most famous researchers in the subject, making the text all the more insightful. ... Read more

Product Description
Barry Simon, I.B.M. Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology, is the author of several books, including such classics as Methods of Mathematical Physics (with M. Reed) and Functional Integration and Quantum Physics. This new book, based on courses given at Princeton, Caltech, ETH-Zurich, and other universities, is an introductory textbook on representation theory. According to the author, "Two facets distinguish my approach. First, this book is relatively elementary, and second, while the bulk of the books on the subject is written from the point of view of an algebraist or a geometer, this book is written with an analytical flavor".The exposition in the book centers around the study of representation of certain concrete classes of groups, including permutation groups and compact semisimple Lie groups. It culminates in the complete proof of the Weyl character formula for representations of compact Lie groups and the Frobenius formula for characters of permutation groups. Extremely well tailored both for a one-year course in representation theory and for independent study, this book is an excellent introduction to the subject which, according to the author, is unique in having "so much innate beauty so close to the surface". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent for analysts
This is an excellent treatment of representation theory, especially focusing on the concrete problem of characterizing all the irreducible representations for some specific important groups such as SU(n) and the symmetric groups S_n. It gets to the point fast. One nice feature is that the book feels as if it is written for analysts and mathematical physicists who need to understand representations, but may not have the strongest background in algebra. The book is entirely self-contained, including all necessary background in algebra such as the Sylow theorems.

Math books are usually difficult to read. This book is no exception. But it teaches the right material, at the right pace.It has been an invaluable part of my library.

1-0 out of 5 stars I would never recommend this book to anyone but my worst enemy.
Barry Simon uses inconsistent and not previously defined unconventional notation when describing his interpretation of group representations.I used this book in an independent study course at the University of Michigan, and we essentially had to first translate to the correct form of the mathematics Barry was sacrilegeously butchering before then trying to understand the new material.Overall, it was a painful experience and I now have to relearn representation theory from a competent mathematician (e.g. Humphreys).Even under penalty of death, I would never recommend this book to anyone but my worst enemy. ...
