4-0 out of 5 stars does the book comes with the access code??
i'm very curious whether this book comes with the access code when we buy it here on amazon...my school has the books sold with access code included...it makes the book so expensive..just wondering if the book that is sold here on amazon have the access code inside the cover or not.....thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
The purchase went really well and I got the book really fast.
Great in every way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, as 'required' textbooks go
In describing this textbook, one should carefully delineate between the authors text and the publishers product. The authors text is excellent: the publisher's product is not. I especially like Chapter Six's Differential Analysis of a Fluid Flow. This explanation is much easier to follow than what's found in any of my other fluids textbooks.

Now the ugly rub is that this is a Wiley textbook, so it's exorbitantly expensive, uses Imperial units obfuscate example explanations, and it includes Wiley's terrible databank problems. From the forth edition onward, there seems little or no real correlation between the text and problems in the chapter, so I assume that is when the publisher switched from the author's problems to their own test bank.

When I finish this class and sell back the expensive textbook (for whatever I can still get), I'll buy an old edition for reference. I see that non-current editions are selling for about 2% of what the new edition goes for, which is a better reflection of real value in the market (as opposed to artificially inflated prices for 'required' texts).

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect, Quick Ship
The Book "Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics" is very helpful to review the fundamental of fluid mechanics. It was shipped very quickly... I recommend to buy this book if you really need to review the topics of fluid mechanics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome smart book
One of the smartest book in the field that made complicate stuff easy to understand

5-0 out of 5 stars a necessary book for working on fluid dynamics
this is really a nice book if you want to work on fluid mechanics. it provides you the equations of fluid mechanics in different coordinate system.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome!!!
the book was gr8!!

brand new as promised of course, and promptly delivered. im verrry happy

4-0 out of 5 stars Typical Maths Book
There is some very important information given in this book. However I still need to do much reading around tensor calculus as I feel that there were not enough worked examples using Christoffel notation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mathematical Foundations of Fluid Mechanics
The title and many of the Amazon reviews of this book are misleading in my opinion. This book should have been titled `The Mathematical Foundation of Fluid Mechanics'.This book describes, in gory detail, the fundamental mathematics of viscous fluid flow. The text is, obviously, heavy on vector and tensor calculus. The first few chapters review the basic theorems of vector and tensor calcular relevent to fluid dynamics. The basic equations of fluid dynamics are then derived, and the analysis is extended to viscous flow. Finally, Aris discusses coordinate transformation and tensor analysis (that is really more of a lead-in to GR than fluid dynamics, although it is interesting to see how this all ties together!).This is NOT a `complete' text in hydrodynamics. There is no discussion of turbulence, supersonic flow, instabilities, etc. This is a text on the mathematical (and geometrical) foundations of hydrodynamics. As such, I view this as an advanced text for a researcher who wants to understand hydrodynamics at it's most complete, fundamental mathematical level. If you are searching for any other type of hydrodynamics text, just move on.The reason that I only gave this book four stars was because I feel that hydrodynamics is a much richer discipline than what is contained within this book. Some of the most enthusiastic reviews greatly overstate the value of working through this book. You will learn quite a bit by going through this book, and it is a great text IF you want to study the foundations of hydrodynamics in great detail, but you will need (alot) more if you want to begin to appreciate fluid mechanics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for any Fluid Dynamics Student
Professor White has always had masterful contributions to the field of fluid mechanics. This book is no exception.More geared for learning the fundamentals, this book does a truly excellent job.

I highly recommend it for any student learning fluids.I checked this book out of our library for three consecutive semesters it was so useful. Finally I just bought a copy for my own collection.

Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for Introductory Fluid Mechanics
This is the best book available for intro to fluids. The chapter on control volume analysis is an excellent introduction to control volume techinques. The problems at the end of chapter gives suffcient practice to apply these techniques to real world situations. The chapter on Compressible flow is also very nicely written. During my undergrad studies, this is the book which kindled my interest in fluid mechanics and subsequently to acoustics. My sincere thanks to the author for introducing the subject so clearly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book with one exception.
I got this book for a Intermediate Fluid Mechanics course. It is not a bad book, the derivations are not extremely complicated nor too rigorous. The reason why I don't give it 5 stars is that the chapter 5 (dimensional analysis) is horrible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fluid Book
Professor Frank M. White is one of the few double professors who is also an effective author and proficient teacher. As an undergrad I took an introductory fluids course taught by the author at the University of Rhode Island, and I found him to be an extraordinary teacher who could explain complex topics in a straightforward, unassuming manner. The same style of teaching is carried over to his written works, this book in particular.

A relative of mine is enrolled in an engineering college which uses this book for the introductory fluid mechanics course. I had an opportunity to read the chapters on dimensional analysis as well as potential flow and turbomachinery, and I can say that the style remains the same, that is, it is written for students with ample examples and readable text. Most of the book is still very familiar to me since the text resided on my desk for 13 years when I worked as mechanical engineer for a major shipbuilder. As an engineer working in the marine design industry and later in computational fluid dynamics, I found the fundamentals presented in my earlier version of the book relevant for review and reference throughout my career.

There are only four teachers I have encountered, while obtaining three degrees in two institutions, who are unconcerned with impressing their colleagues but instead possess a strong explicit enthusiasm for and absolute understanding of the topics that they teach. Professor White was the first of these educators, and I only wish that I had appreciated the scope and style of his teachings when I was an undergrad. I have over sixty textbooks which I have read for college level courses over a 25 year period. The most clear, comprehensive and understandable text unquestionably has been Professor White's fluid mechanics book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books to learn Fluid Mechanics
An excellent introduction to FluidMechanics clearly written and well illustrated. The book balances theory and practice elegantly. It should be the first reference for anyone interested in this subject. Very didactic. I would really like to see a new edition of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great price
I love this book!
I borrowed it from a coworker and ended up ordering a copy for myself. The writing is clear and concise, but not too brief, making the book very understandable and useful for self-teaching.
Also, as an undergraduate student, I'm on a tight budget after purchasing my regular college textbooks, but this one is quite reasonably priced. Probably the best $20 a mechanical engineering student can spend.
(Also, if you are not familiar with tensors or more advanced vector calculus, Vectors, Tensors and the Basic Equations of Fluid Mechanics (Dover Books on Engineering) is another great book and makes a perfect companion.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fluid Mechanics (Dover Classics of Science and Mathematics)
This is an excellent book on Fluid Mechanics. It covers all the important topics that both students and practitioners are likely to encounter. Notably, the structure of the book is very logical in that it starts with the fundermentals upon which the more advanced topics are successively built. Three key features of this book are especially outstanding: 1) provision of many worked examples through out the book, 2) provision of many illustrations, including photographs, and 3) provision of problems for the reader to solve at the end of each chapter.

The most notable shortcoming of this book is the fact that it does not use SI units, which are used by many countries. This is a disadvantage as far as international readers are concerned. That is not in the case for USA readers, which is probably the target market for the book. All in all, it is a 5-star book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding & Comprehensive Introduction
Clear yet rigorous approach to a complex topic. This book provides a strong foundation for the equations of fluid motion that is quite approachable. It organizes well Navier Stokes to other equations such asEuler's and Bernoulli's. A useful text for undergraduate engineeringstudents.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is very popular to undergraduate engr. students
This book has been used by several universities and adopted as the course text for several years by the US Naval Academy. It is written to strengthen student's background in applied math, and has many clever example problems. The degree of difficulty is slightly greater than most other texts on the subject but it is justified in that the aim is to improve student's math prowess. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars studen solutions manuel to Fundentals of fluid nechannics
This panflet, because it can be call that, is not worth the time or money, it only answer a few of the book problems, 7 to 10, from every chapter. disapointed!! returned it!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Worthless
The 'solutions manual' only gives solutions to the study guide questions in the solutions manual. Completely worthless. Don't waste your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who don't want to read 50+ pages per chapter...
First, there are a few things about the format of this book that I didn't expect.

First, the chapter review that the book has every chapter in the text, this is a great idea. The solutions manual goes over all the important formulas, ideas, and main concepts of each chapter in 2-3 pages of reading. It's great for those who don't want to sit down and read 50+ pages of material and just want to get down to the meat of it. With all that said, this manual does not go over the derivations of formulas, midway formulas and the equalities thereof that can be used to solve some of the problems in faster.

Second, this manual has lots of examples per chapter, I'd say around a total of 15 examples in each chapter. It starts of with simple examples and explains in detail how the formula was used, why it was used and what the meaning of some of the variables, assumptions and answers are. Then it goes on to answer the review questions of each chapter, with full solution explanation and diagrams, it's great! The examples REALLY help with understanding what is being taught in the chapter, makes the formulas look easy to use and understand.

Third (and this is a big one that I didn't see coming) DON'T EXPECT TO HAVE THE SOLUTIONS FOR THE QUESTIONS AT THE END OF THE CHAPTER FROM THE TEXT. IF YOUR INSTRUCTOR HAS YOU TURN IN HOMEWORK, THEN YOU STILL HAVE TO SOLVE THE PROBLMEMS YOURSELF. This book doesn't go over any of the questions at the end of the chapter, so don't expect to get any help with that!!

Overall though, this book has saved my butt in the class, if I read the text and didn't quite understand how to use all the formulas I would read through the review in the solutions manual and get a clear understanding of what was being asked to do. Then the examples really made it easy to apply the formulas myself. It's a great buy for the money.

I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY STUDENT.

This book wasn't exactly what I expected in a solutions manual ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fluid Dynamics
This a must for any serious student of fluid mechanics. The solved problems really help to get a real grasp of the subject matter, while enable the student to get ready on the fundamentals needed to tackle more profund challanges. I will recommend this book to anyone that seeks a complete understanding of how fluid behave under certain specified conditions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great....if you don't have a textbook
the examples are great, but they follow the textbook i have to the letter for the most part.there are some new things, but i wish they would have provided original examples

5-0 out of 5 stars Author's review
I have several copies of this Outline and all Greek letters display fine. Also, I could not find any figures several pages away from their reference. I used Patino font, which is very easy to recognize when used along side Greek letters, especially the letter "vee."

1-0 out of 5 stars Formulas aren't displayed
I'm a huge fan of Schaum's -- the low rating is for formatting on the Kindle.

None of the greek letters (density, torque, etc) display in the text, so it is impossible to read the text without already knowing the material.
Also, the figures are displayed up to 5 pages away from the text to which they pertain -- the speed that you can change pages makes the figures unusable in the context of the text.

Definitely not useful as a sole source of information -- possibly okay for a suppliment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Fluid Mechanics
This book is actually fairly good. There is not a great conversion factor chart in either the back or the front of the book so I copied one from my Thermodynamics book and taped it in the back and it works just fine. Every chapter has a detailed example for every type of problem and goes through the process of solving it step by step which was very helpful. All of the main need to know equations were highlited in blue, making it easy to find exactly what you need to know at any time.

4-0 out of 5 stars tough book but worth it
The examples save you.Warning: the authors dive straight in to calculus and diffy q in the examples.Their problem solving strategy help keeps things straight, though.Examples end with discussions which explain their purpose which is a nice touch. The examples do prepare you for the end of chapter problems. It is a worthwhile book.I had it when it was only Fox and McDonald; Pritchard's makes the book fun, but at the loss of precision. For example the 1st example in Ch.2 was much better presented in the 2nd ed when you figured Guass's law for inlets and outlets for yourself instead of being told beforehand what the example was about.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction on fluid mechanics
I like this book a lot.So, I am surprised that it received only an average review. On the other hand, I had no comparison since this is the only undergraduate level fluid mechanics book I own.But I do recommend that people get a good book on heat transfer and thermodynamics since those three topics are closely related. For heat transfer and thermodynamics, I recommend Incropera and Moran.

3-0 out of 5 stars Damaged Book
I bought this book used and was expecting the cover to be a little damaged like they said it would be, but upon receiving it the book was just in a sealed plastic bag with no packaging of any kind and the books bind at the top had been smashed down and ripped. Not a big deal but they should take more care in shipping their products, even if it is only a short distance. Otherwise book is clean.

1-0 out of 5 stars Undergrad trying to learn fluid mechanics
I feel the pain of many of the students who gave this book a poor rating. Although I don't particularly find the derivations very difficult to follow, I must agree that the examples and the depth of explanations of concepts that were given in this book is a far cry from the difficulty of the homework problems. This presented two problems for me as a student struggling to learn INTRODUCTORY fluid mechanics:

1)Fluid mechanics is a difficult subject and the conceptual explanations along with the fairly easy example problems lulled me into a false sense of security that I had grasped the concepts and how to do the problems...until midterms came. I ended up having to study off of two other fluid mechanics books I had found in the school library.

2) The problems given at the end of the chapter were WAY more difficult than the example problems. Many of my classmates couldn't figure out the answers and ended up looking for the solutions manual online... we did not learn much. I think the problems should build up in difficulty as you go. I feel that if they did structure the problems in the manner I had just suggested, students would get to slowly develop conceptual understanding as well as practice with problem-solving in fluid mechanics.

If you are a professor, PLEASE PLEASE do not use this book to teach introductory fluid mechanics! I find that many customers who had given this book a good review were those who had used it as a reference or review material... basically those who had already learned fluid mechanics. I'm a student from one of the University of California schools and our professors do not get to choose the book of their choice. If you are one of those professors stuck teaching with this book, please at least TEACH what this book lacks (conceptual depth), assign do-able homework problems from a different text, provide higher-difficulty examples, or refer students to additional resources where they can actually learn fluid mechanics! ... This is the best book for a grad student who wants to start learning the advanced topics in fluid mechanics. This is the best book to read after Munson and is much easier and much more useful than Batchelor. Most of the concepts are very nicely explained and there a lot of emphasis on understanding the physics of each phenomenon. There is an introductory part on continuum mechanics which is very helpful. There book is almost error free though a lot of equations are presented in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent covering of Fluid Mechanics.
I bought this book for a class in geophysical fluid dynamics. I have only a little background in fluid mechanics, but I have some experience with partial differential equations and tensor math (mostly electromagnetics). If you are light on tensor math and physics, this is NOT the book to start with. There are other books in tensor math you will need to read and work problems in first. PDEs are a prerequisite, too, so don't take this book lightly.

There is a very good review of tensor math and PDEs in the first chapter and appendices, but you will probably need additional references. The problems are challenging, and they range from easy to quite difficult. The math in this book also has a tendency to be terse, but not too sparse (and the author doesn't use the typical math book cliches, 'left as an exercise' or 'proof is trivial').

The chapters cover quite a few topics, from basic fluid motion, Newtonian and Eulerian flow, and turbulence and Reynolds numbers, to a few advanced topics like blood flow in biological systems. This book would be excellent as a reference, since the chapters are well organized, generally thorough and up-to-date. I plan to keep it on my shelf next to my physics and electromagnetics handbooks when I finish my GFD course.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pitiful
This book claims to be an introduction to fluids. If so, it is the worst introduction I have seen. While other books are trying to get the student to understand what viscosity is or how to calculate presure with depth in a fluid, this book is literally teaching Eigenvectors of a Symmetric Tensor. This book may have a place but it is not as an introductory text.If you want a good introductory text, buy Frank White's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of The Better Books
I have many books on numerical methods and most of them are hard to follow when trying to solve a real problem. This is the only book that I keep on my desk whilst discretising my equations, I am glad that I have this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars CFD Bible
I refer to this book as my CFD bible.I first used this book approximately 19 years ago as part of a two semester course in CFD.Since that time, I have refered to this book often.

The authors treatment of the subject aids in the understanding of the subject.Their building block approach tends to lead the reader from simple examples to more complex problems.Their treatment of both Euler and Navier-Stokes equations and their solution has been a great benifit in my work.Their explinations of potential theory and it's use as a CFD tool have been responsible for many hours save on development and coding of computational tools to analyze aerodynamic shapes.

I am so thankful for the text I currently have that I plan to pick up a second text just to have the updated material.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
The book is one of best books in Computational Fluid Mechanics And Heat Transfer area I have read. It not only covers basic knowledge but also talk a lot about advanced technique about CFD. It is very helpful for students just like me. After I bought this book by using a discount from coupons-center.com, I have used the book for one year. I also found CFD code is very helpful. If you are beginner to CFD coding or want to some free code as reference, this book has many good code examples. you can learn from the code examples and then can easily make your CFD code.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
I learnt CFD on this book. Definitively I give it 5 star, unfortunately I can't give it 6. It covers all the CFD from the beginning to the advance level. You will use it as an undergraduate, graduate, PhD, post doctorate researcher. No kidding. There are some codes, the book contains all the information you need, it is easy to read, never criptic like many others. I suggest you to buy this book without any esitation if you are really wanting to learn and do CFD. There are more specific books on some arguments, say, turbulence, but none is more comprehensive and well written like this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
As a researcher working with CFD codes, I found this book very useful. It has algorithms to all types of problems ranging from simple heat or wave equation to Navier-Stokes equations. All the algorithms are well explainedand precise. I strongly recommend this book for anyone pursuing CFD. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fluid Mechanics
This book was not as described. The seller did not make it known that she book is the international version. The picture shows the regularly used book, not the book that was sent to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best hydraulic reference I have found & I use it regularly
I own the 8th edition and have used it regulary since graduation 12 years ago as a practicing civil engineer designing water treatment plants.I have looked at many other fluid mechanics books over the years and have not found any equal to this one.I need to get the 10th edition and see how it has changed with Daugherty no longer around. There are other books that are more in-depth with theoretical analysis, but this one has the best balance betweeen theory and practical application for typical civil engineering projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and understandable work on hydraulics...
As a lecturer and graduate student in water resource engineering, I have read numberous textbooks covering the topic of fluid mechanics.I have reviewed textbooks written by aeronautical andmechanical engineers, and find that the civil engineers, particularly Dr.'s Finnemore and Franzini, have done an exemplary job in writing a book that is clear and logical, yet spares no detail, in presenting the fundamentals of fluids to undergraduates and graduates alike. The book begins with definitions, viscocity, and hydrostatics, then moves along to open-channel hydraulics and waterhammer.

The authors discuss the details in terms of concepts, testing, and mathematical computations while using a minimum of complicated vector integrals. They continue to present "the big picture" of hydraulics even while explaining fluid theory - a student and lecturer could not ask for more. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that I laud this textbook and recommend it to any practicing civil or agricultural engineer, or to any student of engineering.

1-0 out of 5 stars There isn't a rating less than 1 star?
I cannot help but feel like I would like to toss my cookies when I recall this work. Certainly, the author made a futile attempt to provide an apelike overview of fluid mechanics, as it was at the time- but did hereally scrutinise those engineering applications? Really and truly? As areader, I must judge for myself-does this textbook actually present aserious attempt to disseminate the theories and methodologies of fluidmechanics, or is it just a convenient outlet for the author to convey tohis readers his most bizarre and disturbing fascination with pipes, heads, and viscous fluids?Personally, I wonder.... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have Fluid Mechanics Book
I had read the first edition one that I borrowed
from the library. Then I decided to purchase this
2nd edition. I am looking forward to reading it
once again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic on fluid mechanics
This is a classic text on fluid mechanics, and an essential for any serious researcher in the field. This book starts by deriving the basic equations of fluid dynamics (a few simple equations - easy, huh?), then each subsequent chapter discusses narrower topics such as viscosity, turbulence, supersonic flow, etc.As a text for a student, this book has some serious limitations in my view.I would not recommend this book to someone approaching the material for the first time, or to teach oneself, it is really best as a research resource for a professional or graduate student. One thing that I didn't like about this book (and this is a complaint about the LL series in general) is that it is very difficult to separate which topics are general and which are very specific. The reader needs to know a bit about hydrodynamics before approaching this book in my opinion. For example, LL discuss the Rankine-Hugoniot equations for flow across a shock (a general result fundamental to hydrodynamics), then in the next section they discuss the supersonic corrugation instability, a subject that is really of interest to a small number of researchers and advanced graduate student in specific fields.Overall, not a great learning text, but an irreplacable reference on hydrodynamics. If you are looking for an introductory text, start with Batchelor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid text on fluid mechanics
This is an excellent fluid mechanics text.It is also my first recommendation to those who wish to study acoustics. You ought to start with the initial chapters on fluids; you'll need that material for some of what follows. The 65-page chapter on sound is simply marvellous. And then comes material on a wealth of topics, including shock waves, supersonic flow, detonation waves, relativistic fluid dynamics, and a short but valuable section on superfluid dynamics and the propagation of sound in a superfluid.

For physics majors, this is the book to get on fluid mechanics. The explanations are short and clear, and the material is comprehensive. In addition, the exercises are well-chosen, and the solutions are always included.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Book in Physics
Landau & Lifshz "Course of Theoretical Physics" is a famous and respected set of books in Physics. Unfortunately,Butterworth-Heinemann, who currently prints those books in English, printsthem with very poor quality. The books seem to be "printed" inold copy machines and the paper used is also a cheap one.In many pages,it is really hard to read the text, due to such poor printing.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST AND MOST COMPLETE BOOK ON FLUID MECHANICS
This is the Volume 6 of the famous Course of Theoretical Physics by L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz. All serious students of theoretical physics must possess the ten volumes of this excellent Course, which cover in detail and rigour practically all the branches of theoretical physics. The Volume 6 treats the theory of the motion of liquids and gases. The book opens with the theory of ideal fluids and drives the attention of the reader to a large amount of topics, which are discussed in greater detail and, moreover, discussing with details topics not usually found in other similar books, such as turbulence, sound, fluid dynamics of combustion, relativistic fluid dynamics and the dynamics of superfluids. The book is written in a language proper of a theoretical physicist, but owing to its clarity, it can be read without problems for other scientists. A superb book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fluid Mechanics Review
This comprehensive text covereing fluid mechanics by Robert Mott is an excellent means to review basic fluid mechanics. The text, example solutions and diagrams are easy to follow in spite of not having examined the principles of fluid mechanics since the mid 60's. Mr Mott provides sufficiently detailed solutions and discussions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book.
This book was the assigned reading material for my engineering technology course. Its primary purpose was to give us an `introduction' to fluid related concepts, and in that area I would say it was very successful. This books writing style is extremely easy to follow, and unlike some of my other textbooks was actually enjoyable to read. It provided step by step instructions on how to solve problems, and also offered more than enough problems for the students to solve themselves. The only issue I have with this book relates to the rather limited examples it provides. In its solutions it illustrates how to solve the simple problems, but negates to do the more complicated ones which sometimes left me clueless on how to proceed. This book is also rather expansive and does not go very deep into the subject.. If your looking for a good introduction book for your course, or some extra learning material this is a great choice. If you're a more advanced reader, I suggest you look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't adapt for your course
The book is very shallow and not worth considering for any engineering or any technical degree. it might be good for high school level pre-engineering classes, but difinetly not at college or university level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Mott knows how to teach.

The Chemical Engineer's Practical Guide to Contemporary Fluid Mechanics

Since most chemical processing applications are conducted either partially or totally in the fluid phase, chemical engineers need a strong understanding of fluid mechanics. Such knowledge is especially valuable for solving problems in the biochemical, chemical, energy, fermentation, materials, mining, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, polymer, and waste-processing industries.

Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers, Second Edition, with Microfluidics and CFD, systematically introduces fluid mechanics from the perspective of the chemical engineer who must understand actual physical behavior and solve real-world problems. Building on a first edition that earned Choice Magazine's Outstanding Academic Title award, this edition has been thoroughly updated to reflect the field's latest advances.

This second edition contains extensive new coverage of both microfluidics and computational fluid dynamics, systematically demonstrating CFD through detailed examples using FlowLab and COMSOL Multiphysics. The chapter on turbulence has been extensively revised to address more complex and realistic challenges, including turbulent mixing and recirculating flows.

Part I offers a clear, succinct, easy-to-follow introduction to macroscopic fluid mechanics, including physical properties; hydrostatics; basic rate laws for mass, energy, and momentum; and the fundamental principles of flow through pumps, pipes, and other equipment. Part II turns to microscopic fluid mechanics, which covers

  • Differential equations of fluid mechanics
  • Viscous-flow problems, some including polymer processing
  • Laplace's equation, irrotational, and porous-media flows
  • Nearly unidirectional flows, from boundary layers to lubrication, calendering, and thin-film applications
  • Turbulent flows, showing how the k/ε method extends conventional mixing-length theory
  • Bubble motion, two-phase flow, and fluidization
  • Non-Newtonian fluids, including inelastic and viscoelastic fluids
  • Microfluidics and electrokinetic flow effects including electroosmosis, electrophoresis, streaming potentials, and electroosmotic switching
  • Computational fluid mechanics with FlowLab and COMSOL Multiphysics

Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers, Second Edition, with Microfluidics and CFD, includes 83 completely worked practical examples, several of which involve FlowLab and COMSOL Multiphysics. There are also 330 end-of-chapter problems of varying complexity, including several from the University of Cambridge chemical engineering examinations. The author covers all the material needed for the fluid mechanics portion of the Professional Engineer's examination.

The author's Web site, www.engin.umich.edu/~fmche/, provides additional notes on individual chapters, problem-solving tips, errata, and more.

This is a simple basic book about fluidics. Not complex equations.
Not a heavy mathematics. Contain useful information about technology process with fluids - bubbles and two phase flow.
Published in 1998 has relatively old information about everything.
Positive side - has a small chapter (20 pages) about
MatLab PDE Toolbox for solving fluid mechanics problems.
No connections with COMSOL at all or any kind of simulation.

This is the worst text book I have ever used. I used it for an independent study class and my professor agreed that the topics were not rigorously explained. In addition, frequent assumptions were made without explination and referals were made to "lecture notes," which is, of course, useless if you aren't taking this man's lecture.
