Product Description
Reservoir Geophysics: Applications covers the application and impact of seismic data on oil and gas reservoirs. The material, based on the 2008 SEG/EAGE Distinguished Instructor Short Course, shows how geoscientists use seismic data to determine critical reservoir characteristics in the stages of project life from delineation through secondary recovery. The text describes the main business drivers of the operator and how seismic data help address subsurface uncertainties for business purposes. The book discusses delineation, development, production, and geophysics applications in heavy-oil and carbonate reservoirs. Also included are two hands-on student problems based on actual projects. Illustrations include examples that focus on business value. The book will be of interest to geoscientists, managers, and operators.

The book covers the relationship between the business opportunity of the petroleum operator and the application of seismic data to provide valuable subsurface information.

Product Description

Many text books have been written on the subject "Exploration Geophysics". The majority of these texts focus on the theory and the mathematical treatment of the subject matter but lack treatment of practical aspects of geophysical exploration. This text is written in simple English to explain the physical meaning of jargon, or terms used in the industry. It describes how seismic data is acquired in 2-D and 3-D, how they are processed to convert the raw data to seismic vertical and horizontal cross sections, that are geologically meaningful, and how these and other data are interpreted to delineate a prospect. Workshops are included after each chapter and are designed to reinforce learning of the concepts presented.

Key Features:

Written in simple easy to understand language

Heavily illustrated to aid in understanding the text

End of chapter "Key words and workshop"

The text includes several appendices and answers for the selected workshop problems

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Excellent purchase!
The book arrived a little bit late (about 2 days late) than expected but with the condition as described by the seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is how textbooks should be written!
Of the 5 books I own that explain Seismic Refraction principles, Professor Burger is the only one who took the time to walk you thru step-by-step on interpreting a Seismogram. That is the sign of a true teacher and an Author who's not afraid of a little extra effort to help his students practically apply the knowlege.I only wish I lived closer to attend his classes!
I do agree with the others in that an IBM PC version of the diskettes is long overdue, but this book still gets my 5 star rating!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
The book is very detailed. Seismic theory and practice is quite cogent and is the strongest area (about half the book). Strong descriptions are given on; Electrical Resistivity, Gravity, and Magnetics. IP, SpontaineousPotential, Magnetotelluric and Telluric and EM Surveying are barelymentioned. Not mentioned are; VLF, Ground Penetrating Radar, Remote Sensingand Radiometrics. I agree with the previous reviewer that it would be niceto have the Xcel spread sheets in both Mac & PC formats.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is marvelous
Excellent book for upper level undergraduate and graduate students in shallow geophysics. My only wish is that the disks could also be in IBM format and not only Mac format. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Exploration of the oceans using geophysical methods has had a profound effect on the way we view the structure of the Earth and its behaviour through geological time. Geophysics has also played a vital role in the search for petroleum and other natural resources lying beneath the seabed.

This volume on marine geophysics has two objectives: to provide a comprehensive review of techniques and to examine what geophysical observations can tell us about the structure and tectonics of the oceans. Central to geophysical work at sea are the means of locating observations accurately and determining in detail the morphology of the sea floor. These topics are discussed early in the book. Considered next are the powerful seismic techniques for imaging the Earths interior from shallow coastal areas to the deep-sea trenches. Further chapters focus on the gravity and magnetic fields over the oceans, heat flow, electrical and radiometric methods and measurements in offshore boreholes. In later parts of the book, wide-ranging geophysical observations are brought together in chapters on the development of the modern oceans, the structure of their deep basins and the nature of their aseismic and seismically active margins.

This book will be of interest to marine scientists and advanced undergraduates and postgraduates following courses on, or undertaking research in, geophysics, marine geology, oceanography, physical sciences, remote sensing, marine surveying and offshore engineering. Contents:

4-0 out of 5 stars Opinion
This is a really good book if you are in to high level data processing. It's not a book for people that are starting in the area of geophysics. The important aspect of this book it's that it has a very detailed explanation of the mathematics involved in data processing.Things like Fourier transforms, designing filters, tomography etc. The material of the book is extremely dens but it's really well explained as long as you remember your calculus and lineal algebra.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a book!
Incredible applications of linear algebra. This book covers the meat of inverse problems in data analysis.Very clear presentation with many examples. It is a very challenging read nonetheless, even if you have a lot of familiarity with linear algebra. It uses linear algebra in a much different way than what people get exposed to in math courses, focusing on how to solve non-invertible linear systems.Although the title has the word "geophyical" in it, there is no emphasis on the geophysical sciences, it would be useful to anyone doing discrete inverse problems. No prerequisites other than basic linear algebra (matrix arithmetic) and patience. ... Product Description

This book focuses on the dynamics of clouds and of precipitating mesoscale meteorological systems. Clouds and precipitating mesoscale systems represent some of the most important and scientifically exciting weather systems in the world. These are the systems that produce torrential rains, severe winds including downburst and tornadoes, hail, thunder and lightning, and major snow storms. Forecasting such storms represents a major challenge since they are too small to be adequately resolved by conventional observing networks and numerical prediction models.

* Provides a complete treatment of clouds integrating the analysis of air motions with cloud structure, microphysics, and precipitation mechanics
* Describes and explains the basic types of clouds and cloud systems that occur in the atmosphere-fog, stratus, stratocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrus, thunderstorms, tornadoes, waterspouts, orographically induced clouds, mesoscale convection complexes, hurricanes, fronts, and extratropical cyclones
* Summarizes the fundamentals, both observational and theoretical, of atmospheric dynamics, thermodynamics, cloud microphysics, and radar meteorology, allowing each type of cloud to be examined in depth
* Integrates the latest field observations, numerical model simulations, and theory
* Supplies a theoretical treatment suitable for the advanced undergraduate or graduate level, as well as post-graduate

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Text - Physics Oriented
This is indeed a fine text.I think it is easier to read and work through if one has a strong background in physics (vs. geology) as the methodology is quite similar to the standard approach in physics, i.e. make a conjecture based on some physical intuition, attempt to derive relevant equations from basic principles, and then apply those equations.Geology is typically more descriptive and slightly less rigorous so I would imagine someone approaching this text from a geology dominated background might have a harder time reading it than a person coming to geophysics from physics or math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Text
This is an outstanding text that is widely respected. Before I developed my own notes, I used it in my classes at the University of Oklahoma.Fowler is very clear in her explanations and coverage. The first reviewhere reads like a disgruntled student and does this fine book a disservice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read, lacks examples
