Am going to skip over the general contents (you can see the index for yourselves) and just say that this book covers all the things that you wondered about that didn't seem to be covered in larger texts. The material is easy to follow and yet covers a huge array of critical information and analytical techniques, from correcting for anti-aliasing filters in digitisers to a whole treatise on removing instrument responses. Can't recommend this highly enough if you're getting into seismology. An essential reference book and a steal at $40 or less.

This is an excellent introduction to modern seismic measurement systems. Basically all what you need to know is covered here. Starting from functioning of seismometer, analog-to-digital techniques and digital filtering. All from the point of view of seismological interests, i.e. everything is all the time nicely linked with seismological practices which other "signal and systems" books obviously lack. Also the CD included is very educative when learning what poles and zeros actually mean.

Pictures could be a bit better from time to time. It seems that straight window-captures have been used when some further image processing would have been required.

Nevertheless, this is a must for any seismologist dealing with measuring systems. ... Read more

I read the Reviewer's comments and appreciate his overall positive review. However, I feel it is necessary to clarify misconceptions regarding the basic physics material which is presented in the review.
The conservation equations that are presented do not mean a quantity such as heat is always conserved. As discussed in the text, there are sources and sinks of heat in the conservation of equation of heat that is presented. A conservation equation for motion is also just as appropriate as writing a conservation equation for momentum. We can write a conservation equation for any quantity, such as a trace gas (e.g. CO2). Source/sink terms can be accounted for in this mathematical framework.
The equations in the book are specifically written for the atmosphere, which is treated as an ideal gas. This is why the qualification is added in the text that the equations are for the atmosphere (and specifically the earth's atmosphere). The equations developed in the book from the first principle of thermodynamics are only appropriate for the earth's atmosphere, since the ideal gas equation for air is used.
The basic phyics text in Chapters 2 and 3 have been extensively reviewed by numerous students and others and has been found to be solidly based in fundamental concepts. The Reviewer did correctly find a typo in that the virtual temperature is greater than the actual temperature whenever water vapor is present. The inequality on page 8 was reversed but the text and the explanation in that paragraph are correct and should be clear to a reader.
Finally, I thank the reviewer for taking the time to complete the review. If there is a third Edition, I certainly will acknowledge that review.

(Revised after reviewer took course in etiquette)."Mesoscale Meteorological Modeling" is the new second edition of the flagship text in the field. It is reasonably priced and seems to be well organized, addressing a lot of important problems. Aside from the discussion of thermodynamics, Professor Pielke's book is lucid and coherent.

To make a more specific criticism, consider section 2.2,entitled "Conservation of Heat." For a start I might complain that heat is not something conserved in atmospheric processes. In the usual thermodynamic usage, heat means energy transferred through thermal processes, is not an exact differential, and is not conserved. I think he means conservation of energy, but why not say so? It gets worse before it gets better. To quote from the first paragraph: "The first law of thermodynamics for the atmosphere states that differential changes in heat content, dQ, are equal to the sum of the work performed by an object, dW, and differential changes in internal energy, dI."

The first law of thermodynamics is universal - applying equally to steam engines (in which context it was first identified) and black holes. The phrase "differential changes in heat content" is nonsensical, since heat is energy transferred, not "contained" energy. The word differential is not only vague but also unnecessary. It would have been more accurate to say that the heat transferred into a system is equal to the sum of the work performed by the system and the increase in the internal energy of the system.

On page 8, he says that the virtual temperature is less than or equal to the sensible temperature, but the opposite is in fact true. On the same page, I found his attempt to discuss perfect differentials confused and confusing.There is both a mathematical and a physical point involved here.The (thermodynamically interesting) perfect differentials are the total differentials of state variables.dQ is not such an exact differential, and that is why it is meaningless to talk about conservation of heat.

Another unfortunate line is "Internal forces are required to account for the dissipation of momentum by molecular motions." (page 16). This is misleading. Momentum is conserved - absolutely - and unlike energy is not usually converted ("dissipated") to a more inconspicuous form, like internal energy. The atmosphere can transfer momentum to other parts of itself, by pressure or friction, to the ocean or the solid Earth (again by friction) or even (in microscopic amounts, by tidal forces) to the sun and moon, but these should be considered external forces. I infer from the succeeding sentences that conversion of energy from one form to another was the point.


I could quibble about the fact that he confuses centripetal and centrifugal acceleration (page 14) or the fact that he for some obscure reason refers to conservation of momentum as "Conservation of Motion," but that might be excessively picky.

Despite this type of flaw, I think the book is potentially useful. Perhaps one should just skip the thermodynamics (and read about it some good elementary physics book, like Sears) and just read the part he apparently cares about - the modeling. Apparently this is as good as it gets on the subject of mesoscale modeling. In any case, I don't begrudge the money I spent on it - I learned some useful things about modeling coordinates in Chapter 6. ... Read more

This is an good book for the scientifically minded interested in Venus.It starts from the outside and works in peeling back the layers of Venus like an onion.It makes a clear distinction between the accepted facts and the still debated theories.

It is a little out of date, but is an excellent place to start.

I have to warn those who are not scientific or technical professionals, this is not a book for laymen.Each chapter is written like a scientific paper, which can make for fatiguing reading if you're not use to the style.

This is an excellent book on stratospheric chemistry and transport. It reads much more quickly than the denser "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion" reports issued by the WMO, but it still includes all the important details. I purchased Marshall and Plumb's book in order to give me a bit more quantitative information on the subject than I had gotten from the IPCC and the U.S. Global Change Research Project reports, among others.It had been many years since I last had an in-depth exposure to physics and advanced math (late 1950s, earl;y 1960s), so I spent several weeks reviewing, mostly differential equations.A good grounding in physics and calculus through diff. eq. is really necessary to get the best benefit from this book, but having achieved that, the book is an oustanding introduction to the topics implied in the title.There is enough informaton, presented in an extremely readable format, that I have been driven back to my computer to develop simple models from the book's content.I would heartily recommend this book to anyone willing to put forth a modicum of effort to become much better informed about the science.

The book provides a concise and clear introduction as to how the atmosphere and ocean behave on our planet.The authors apply first principles to explain the structure and circulation of both fluids, how heat is transported and fine-scale processes like convection operate. This book is a concise, clear and holistic introduction to the subject of atmosphere, ocean and climate science. The book is written in a student-friendly manner. The authors present and develop the tools required to understand the climate system. These tools include radiation, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. These tools are then used to understand the behaviour of the atmosphere and ocean. The interplay between atmosphere and ocean systems in giving rise to the climate system is elucidated. The last chapter is devoted to climate dynamics. While primarily discussing the general characteristics of atmosphere and ocean, the book also elaborates on slightly more specialized topics like wind-driven circulation, thermohaline circulation and paleoclimate.This book will help undergraduate and entry-level graduate students to secure a beachhead on the fascinating new territory of atmosphere, ocean and climate science.

Very well presentation of the material acompanied of details to conduct laboratory experiments and all the data accessible through book's website. The text is clear with concise explanations and tips to follow and try all their derivations. The treatment of ocean and atmospheres as a continuum and unique system is simply amazing. Key references are provided for the reader interested in an in depth treatment of any subject, and in it is own constitutes a valuable reference for teaching as well as for self-study (especially beginners). Not recommended for those interested in mesoscale dynamics or microscale processes. Finally, the carefully edition (recreative illustrations, footnotes with details on fathers of the field, etc) of the book makes this indeed a beautifull book.
