Laser holographic techniques can be used to detect small deformations of three-dimensional objects, of the order of the wavelength of the laser light. This is an important and unique new investigation of the geophysical uses of laser holography in rock deformations, in the laboratory, and in the field. It shows the potential of a relatively new technique which has been covered sparsely in the literature until now. "Laser Holography in Geophysics" is intended for professional geological scientists and MSc and PhD students who require reading material for their courses. Reference book, seems good, never used before
Since it's a recommendation from my teacher on micrometeorology course (undergraduate atmospheric sciences at my UNI) I assume it is a good source of what I'll be using on this year, from what I've looked over it had good explaning of the phisics involved, some examples and pictures that help understanding the text and is more atualized and complete than the previous edition...

This book was used as the textbook for a class on hydrometeorology. The explanations and sequence of the text was good for an entry level class on the subject. The book does not cover precipitation and clouds, an important part of micrometeorology, but overall I would recommend the text. A great textbook!
In this introductory text space is equally divided into traditional methods (finite difference and spectral) and more modern methods (finite volume and semi-Lagrangian) for solving GFD-related PDEs.The book also contains chapters on filtering of physically insignificant fast waves andon open boundary conditions.Arguably these subjects can be learned bystudying a collection of specialty books, but very seldom one findseven-handed treatment of all major techniques in a single book like this. More important, the breadth in scope does not come at the cost of depth orconciseness in presentation.Rather, the book achieves a delightfulbalance between breadth and depth, as well as between theory and practice. Not only is it an important successer to the long-respected Haltiner andWilliams (1984), but it is much more readable.

I used the book toteach a graduate course on numerical methods at the University of Chicago. I could not cover the entire book in a 10-week quarter, but was able tocover chapters 2,3,4 and 5.The clearly written text was very helpful inorganizing the class material.

The problems sets at the end of eachchapter are also well designed, albeit mostly theoretical.It would behelpful to have separate programming assignments based on these problems,so students can learn how to apply principles into practice. ... Read more

predictor for one's success in atmospheric sciences
I was trained in a classical program in atmospheric sciences in the sense that the atmosphere is a fluid hence the field being a sub-discipline of fluid mechanics is much emphasized. Holton's book is The Undergraduate Textbook for programs rooted in this understanding, in the US or internationally.
As an undergrad I was told that whether or not I was meant to stay in this field could be predicted by how well I performed in the class teaching Holton.
Now one of my duties is to teach dynamics to undergraduates in atmospheric sciences at a US land-grant university. I am however disappointed to find
out that most students coming to the dynamics class do not have such understanding. There is a tendency for students to forsake the hard-core
atmospheric sciences in favor of the marginal science in broadcasting meteorology. Holton's book is often not tolerated and considered too
'mathematical' (this happens to be the most common excuse students without any originality would use). I really would like to challenge
the students who have shunned (or plan to shun) Holton's book to think twice about how serious they are in pursuing a career in atmospheric
sciences before they make fair judgments about the value this book.

Extraordinarily good text
I have to say I'm not sure if texts on atmospheric dynamics get better than this.Physics books in general, in fact, rarely provide an understanding of phenomena that is so concise, intuitive, and yet mathematically robust.I highly recommend it for children, as a gift, and for pleasure reading.

I also very seriously recommend it as a graduate textbook.Five stars all the way.

it's a very analytic book; it's strongly related to anaysis. all the models are very well explaned; perhaps there is not a good relationship between models and pratical meteorology. phenomena are quite 'hidden' by equations, and only a good experienced physicist has the tools to extract the pratical approach deriving from model behaviours.
however it remains a 'must' for meteorologists.

The most exellent textbook in dynamics of the atmopshere
This book, in my opinion, is the most valuable book on dynamical aspects of the atmosphere insofar, especially from pedagogical point of views. As a foreign student, I understand well Holton's writings. Simple but very concise sentences, no wordy explanations. The first 3 chapters provide you the basic equations used inmeteorology and their common approximations. The next 5 chapters, to me, are the most interesting chapters. They give you wide range of knowledge from boundary layer, synoptic scale phenomena, to instabilities. Equations are of great usefulness because THEY bring into the light physical contents of the dynamics of the atmosphere. To me, any analytical equation and its explicit solution provide us a more complete understanding than numerical models do (because you never know some unpredictable behaviour of numerical solutions). So, try to understand carefully the simplest cases that Holton selected. This gives you a lot of deeper understandings. Chapters 9 to 11 provide the dynamics of meso- to large-scale circulations. You will see why the Hadley circulation descends around 35N in very clear way. However, simple Poisson eqn with the argument of "positive forcing, negative solution" that is applied throughout the text should be paid especial attention because this conclusion is not always true. As a whole, the contents, explanations and derivations will be very well constructed if you see the main point of each section.
To get to the heart of this book, read and derive all the skips in Holton's derivations. The gaps are not too hard to fill out in math but require some thinking. DO ALL OF THE EXERCISES at the end by yourself and you will double your knowledge. For any math-related physical book, transparent derivations are the first thing you should figure out, physical explanations will follow subsequently. From my experience, people tend to skip any chapter what they thought they knew it already. If you apply this method here, you may be in trouble. Read carefully the first 5 chapters, understand approximations used in the each situation. Simply apply equations without judgments of their assumptions will take you into the nightmare.

I give this book 5 stars +. It is really classic....

when i was a student, i used to think, like many other reviewers, that the book is extremely dry. but now as a researcher in atmospheric-oceanic dynamics, i realise that the book is useful in explaining the most essential and elementary theories behind the dynamics one can encounter in meteorology or climate dynamics.

use the book as a reference and revision of elementary concepts. if you encounter a process you need to understand in your research, this is the book which will tell you the basics. then you go on and learn more from journal articles and your own research.

Much remains to be studied about the ionosphere, as made clear by this latest annual report of global research on the subject. The papers describe complex and sometimes turbulent interactions between an intrinsic neutral atmosphere and the effect of the sun's impinging radiation, that creates and maintains the ionosphere.

Some papers look at the equatorial zone, where there is no Coriolis effect, with implications for special localised atmospheric events. Other papers go to the mid to high latitudes and study transition effects.

Lucid and readable update on the Earth
Reading Shawna Vogel's Naked Earth reawakened my interest in geophysics - it's a great read, and the best overview I've seen on both the huge changes in the field recently and the arguments that have occurred. My onlycriticism is that some diagrams would have helped a lot, but Vogel'swriting is clear enough to carry the story.

I knew virtually nothing about Geophysics before I read this book.Having just finished the last page just a few minutes ago, I can now say I know the basis for perhaps even an introductory course in Geophysics.From thisbook I learned that the Earth is a living "heat engine",carefully dispensing heat through "plumes", supercontinentalrifting and shifting, volcanic eruptions, hydrothermal venting, and lotsmore really cool stuff happening below our feet.The Earth may also beconsidered a "dynamo", creating a magnetic field that reversesquite mysteriously every some million years.Vogel's comprehensiveoverview also makes the point that it is often not possible to attributeevents or features to a single cause, that not only is the Earth itself asystem of amazing interior, exterior and atmospheric exchanges, but it isalso part of the larger system of space...!It's a fun and easy to read,well-informed, well-researched and objective survey of the field ofGeophysics today.Journalism at its best.I thank Shawna Vogel for my newunderstanding of this planet and its mysterious and awesome workings.

I liked this book a lot
As an explanation ofgeophysicsNaked Earth succeeds.Ms. Vogelbrings the history,theories, personalities, conflicts and politics of geophysical science in to focus.It allows those unfamiliar with the world of science to observe the give and take, the wars, the collaborations and the pure luck required in the advancement toward the truth.She shows how the merging of traditional geologic principals along with more recent theories and discoveries reveals a violent past and predicts a future of certain geologic and atmospheric upheaval.However, I must add that the last few pages of the final chapter Ms. Vogal reveals herself as a typical contemporary journalist.Ms. Vogel couldn't resist commenting on that theory that human activity could lead to climatic catastrophe due to global warming.I was enjoying the book immensely until she threw that one in.I know we've all become desensitized to blatant editorializing from the media, but in a book on geophysics?If you want an enjoyable read on geophysics in general and about some of the latest discoveries, theories and personalities in that field definitely read this book. ... Good introduction, but examples could be better
This book is a good introduction to the subject. It is easy to read and understand (although there are a small number of minor errors) and the concepts are well explained. However, I felt the examples could have been covered in a better, more concrete way.

This is one of my favorite books, it is a great reference for anyone working on signal processing algorithms for image reconstruction, & data estimation. It is well written, and very easy to understand, it has succint expressions with good intuitive explanations. It provides good examples that make it even easier to see the use and advantages of different techniques.
