Product Description
Trying to trade stock, bond, commodity and currency markets without intermarket awareness is like trying to drive a car without looking out the side and rear windows—very dangerous. In this guide to intermarket analysis, the author uses years of experience in technical analysis plus extensive charts to clearly demonstrate the interrelationshps that exist among the various market sectors and their importance. You'll learn how to use activity in surrounding markets in the same way that most people employ traditional technical indicators for directional clues. Shows the analyst how to focus outward, rather than inward, to provide a more rational understanding of technical forces at work in the marketplace. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
This is a book that everyone should read. Even if you don't trade this is a great book about economics and will help anyone to understand what moves the markets and why. There are numerous charts in this book comparing different markets to each other in a plain easy to understand format. As a technical book goes this one is easy to comprehend will give the reader a much greater knowledge of the markets and the economy in general. As a trader myself this is one of the best books out on this subject I know of and one of the best books I have read on trading period. As an example a few years ago lots of economists were talking deflation. If you had of read this book you would have known that we were not heading into a period of deflation but inflation. What is presented in this book is not an exact science but will give the reader insight to what the future economic situation will be.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you liked this book, you'll love his new book....
Those who were reluctant to accept the benefits of intermarket analysis after reading Intermarket Technical Analysis (1991) will find making the paradigm shift much easier after reading his latest book published in February 2004 called Intermarket Analysis. Murphy has the benefit of some monumental market events in the last three decades to demonstrate his case and he uses them to great effect.

As John pointed out in an interview for Stocks & Commodities magazine I did with him in December 2003, it was his original goal to write the quintessential intermarket book but then found the topic so involved that each chapter could have become a book. There is just so much to discuss. Attempting to cover anything but a small snippet in a review is sheer folly. It is also impossible to do the book justice.

Markets have become so interdependent in the last decade, a correlation that continues to strengthen with time. If those who suffered financial ruin between 2000 and 2002 had read Intermarket Technical Analysis, how many of them could have avoided huge losses and even profited from what occurred? We will never know for sure but is it a risk they anyone can afford to take, especially when considering that the cost of avoidance (cost of the book) is less than $50?For those serious about making money in the market and keeping it, his new book, Intermarket Analysis is an absolute must!

5-0 out of 5 stars The textbook on market forecasting
You'll learn a lot from this book. Most investors sit obsessively focused on the market averages. They'll cut on their TV and see the ticker on CNBC be in the green and feel elated or else they'll see it red and get worried.Murphy's book will show you how a study of the bond, currency, and commodities markets along with an analysis of the stock market will help you see the big picture and get a better feel for where the economy and all of the markets are going. The past 3 years has proven to us that just because the stock market has a rally doesn't mean we are on the verge of a big economic boom or a new bull market.

Murphy demonstrates how each of these four sectors interact with one another and the business cycles and if you can grasp the lessons he teaches you then you'll have a clearer understanding of what drives the financial markets.Once you understand these cycles you will be able to forecast the intermediate term trend of the markets. It really isn't that complicated.

The only negative about this book is that it reads like a textbook. It takes a theory of how these markets rotate with one another and demonstrates it with example after example. It takes work to get through the book, but the payoff is well worth it.In fact the lessons in this book are critical to anyone who wants to become a successful investor. In today's environment of rapid boom and bust in which market timing is critical they are more important than ever.Even though it is 10 years old, this is the best book on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers insights many miss
This book and its concept dwells into the area of the financial markets and how they affect each other. Its theory meshes with various other market theories in that if one market goes up, another may respond differently. This is one of the handful of books i would recommend to anyone beginning to get serious about the financial markets. I first picked this up in a state library, much to my amazement it was brand new and never borrowed, much like a lot of the information in it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Badly needs updating & poorly executed
This book is old (1991) and does not cover the important
facet of sector rotation or how to intrepret this book into a meaningful stock play.Murphy in this book does not even hint at it, thus allot of this information is not truly useful. The concept is superb but the execution quite flawed.

Instead get the other Murphy book:Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets: A Comprehensive Guide to Trading Methods and ApplicationsOR Martin Pring's new edition to his updated Complete Technical Analysis.Even Murphy's chapter in New Thinking in Technical Analysis: Trading Models from the Masters
was better than this book, despite its short 25 page conciseness.
Funnily his video on this topic DOES update the book and cover Sector Rotation so Murphy obviously is aware of the oversight.

This book is boring with no payoff. There is too much repitition with no real payoff (sector rotation); if you are truly interested in this important field of study look elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Market Interaction
This is one of the best books on finance I have ever read - (I have over 200 books on finance). Most finance books only analyze that portion of the market relevant to their system. This book does a great job of pointing out the interactions that affect the different investment markets and how these interactions affect investment categories such as stocks, bonds etc.

Key features of the book:

1.Factors that affect different investment categories such as bonds, currencies, stocks.

2.How these factors impact stocks, bonds, currencies etc.

3.How interactions between stocks, bonds, currencies then affect the financial markets.

4.Provides a list of key factors to watch in order to detect shifts in the markets.

Finally, Intermarket Analysis is not your typical dry finance book with page after page of equations and text.Instead, the author John Murphy, has filled this book with visually attractive charts and graphs which do a great job of conveying his message.

5-0 out of 5 stars the big picture of global markets
John Murphy's Intermarket Analysis is a thesis that markets such the currency, commodities, bond, stocks, and market sectors are and have been inter-related.

This is a pretty good book. This book offers a very big picture of the global markets. If you're trading experience only encompasses the past 3 years, this book give a bigger picture from 1980 and 2003.

Note that this book was copyrighted at 2004, so there is no mention of the 2007-2008 crash.Nevertheless, this book shows relationships between markets and offers ideas on why one influenced the other.

Before reading this book, I mostly looked at daily, hourly, and 30 min charts. After reading this book, I now look at the daily, weekly, and monthly charts. Also, I was pretty weak on what happened during the 80's, 90's, and early 00's.This book explains a lot about those years.

I would recommend this book to intermediate investors who want to understand the behavior of markets and who want to learn the direction of markets from 1980 to 2003.If you're a beginner investor, you might want learn basic technical analysis. This book is not a primer.

4-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive but chronological as compared to factual
I like your book Mr Murphy but could you rewrite it in a spreadsheet tabular format for more clarity ??

5-0 out of 5 stars INTERMARKET ANALYSIS
I should have bought this book and the 1st one when they came out. Kept thinking they where not for me, as I day trade. But after I put this information into my thinking ,"themes" came to my trading like the oil air line trade,
or a better understandxing of the gold trade, when it should show up eg switch from deflation to inflation.
Or the us dollars affect on the market.

Also every kid in school should get these books. You understand why you have a job, when you have to move for work.
It is not your fault that your industry is laying off people, and what you should do about it. They sector pyramid
lays out a time line that makes sense. One you can follow the daily news with, and have a keen understanding.

3-0 out of 5 stars Plainly Introduced
Intermarket Analysis is a bridge between TA and economics.
Simply and clearly written, the subject is expounded. There
are sufficient charts except for the last 3 chapters or so. Sam
Stovall's sector rotation is of particularinterestto me.

The idea can be repetitive but I do not mind it.The reasons
are firstly, itmakesreading easier (no need to flip back to
pprevious chapters) and secondly, it reinforces key ideas.

I have 2 questions. How high is hyperinflation and how low
constitutes deflation?

    Product Description
Global Urban Analysis provides a unique insight into the contemporary world economy through a focus on cities. It is based upon a large-scale customized data collection on how leading businesses use cities across the world: as headquarter locations, for finance, for professional and creative services, for media. These data involving up to 2000 firms and over 500 cities provide evidence for both how the leading cities, sometimes called global cities, are coming to dominate the world economy, and how hundreds of other cities are faring in this brave new urban world. Thus can the likes of London, New York and Hong Kong be tracked as well as Manchester, Cleveland and Guangzhou, and even Plymouth, Chattanooga and Xi'an. Cities are assessed and ranked in terms of their importance for various functions such as for financial services, legal services and advertising, as well as for the geographical orientations of their connections.

This is truly a comprehensive survey of cities in globalization covering global, world-regional, and national scales of analysis:

*4 key chapters outline the global structure of the world economy featuring the leading cities
*9 regional chapters covering the whole world also feature the level of services provided by 'medium' cities
*22 chapters on selected countries and sub-regions indicate globalness and localness and feature an even wider range of cities.

Written in an easy to understand style, this book is a must read for anybody interested in their own city in the world and how it relates to other cities. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
Complex mathematical and computational models are used in all areas of society and technology and yet model based science is increasingly contested or refuted, especially when models are applied to controversial themes in domains such as health, the environment or the economy. More stringent standards of proofs are demanded from model-based numbers, especially when these numbers represent potential financial losses, threats to human health or the state of the environment. Quantitative sensitivity analysis is generally agreed to be one such standard.

Mathematical models are good at mapping assumptions into inferences. A modeller makes assumptions about laws pertaining to the system, about its status and a plethora of other, often arcane, system variables and internal model settings. To what extent can we rely on the model-based inference when most of these assumptions are fraught with uncertainties? Global Sensitivity Analysis offers an accessible treatment of such problems via  quantitative sensitivity analysis, beginning with the first principles and guiding the reader through the full range of recommended practices with a rich set of solved exercises. The text explains the motivation for sensitivity analysis, reviews the required statistical concepts, and provides a guide to potential applications.

    The book:

    • Provides a self-contained treatment of the subject, allowing readers to learn and practice global sensitivity analysis without further materials.

    • Presents ways to frame the analysis, interpret its results, and avoid potential pitfalls.

    • Features numerous exercises and solved problems to help illustrate the applications.

    • Is authored by leading sensitivity analysis practitioners, combining a range of disciplinary backgrounds.

Postgraduate students and practitioners in a wide range of subjects, including statistics, mathematics, engineering, physics, chemistry, environmental sciences, biology, toxicology, actuarial sciences, and econometrics will find much of use here. This book will prove equally valuable to engineers working on risk analysis and to financial analysts concerned with pricing and hedging. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting treatment of model validation
When I was working at Oak Ridge National Lab in the late 1970s, I worked with other scientists and statisticians on data and model validation.Toby Mitchell a specialist in experimental design was developing sampling techniques to use in model validation. He has since passed on.One of the techniques he used was Latin hypercube sampling. The authors of this text are from Italy and Canada. They have computer science and mathematical backgrounds but are not statisticians.Yet once you start reading book you will see that they appreciate both the deterministic and the stochastic aspects of modeling.

What they do, they call Global Sensitivity Analysis. They are very bright and are lucid in their explanations and description of philosophical issues. This is not something that those of us who do statistical modeling are very familiar with but it is important to know.It is especially gratifying to see that these authors are always wary of modeling assumptions and look for novel ways to test them. They point out that validating models is complicated. Many models that we construct are complex and even when we are aware of this and test aspects of the model. we often take some things for granted and accept aspects of the model as a given. I really enjoyed reading the afterword where these issues are well brought out.

Specific methods include th elementary effects method discussed in Chapter 3 that is based on the work of Max Morris in a 1991 paper in Technometrics. In Chapter 4, they cover variance-based methods which relies on the work of Sobol and others. They illustrate the applications of these methods with an infection dynamics model.

The main idea is to determine which factors affect the output variables as well as which interaction effects play a role.In the last chapter the authors make recommendations as to when to apply each technique.

At the beginning of the sections they raise questions that they answer in the section. This approach and the problem sets followed by complete and clear solutions makes the text readable and enjoyable even for novices. ... Read more

    Product Description
This book is devoted to differential forms and their applications in various areas of mathematics and physics. Well-written and with plenty of examples, this introductory textbook originated from courses on geometry and analysis and presents a widely used mathematical technique in a lucid and very readable style. The authors introduce readers to the world of differential forms while covering relevant topics from analysis, differential geometry, and mathematical physics.

The book begins with a self-contained introduction to the calculus of differential forms in Euclidean space and on manifolds. Next, the focus is on Stokes' theorem, the classical integral formulas and their applications to harmonic functions and topology. The authors then discuss the integrability conditions of a Pfaffian system (Frobenius's theorem). Chapter 5 is a thorough exposition of the theory of curves and surfaces in Euclidean space in the spirit of Cartan. The following chapter covers Lie groups and homogeneous spaces. Chapter 7 addresses symplectic geometry and classical mechanics. The basic tools for the integration of the Hamiltonian equations are the moment map and completely integrable systems (Liouville-Arnold Theorem). The authors discuss Newton, Lagrange, and Hamilton formulations of mechanics. Chapter 8 contains an introduction to statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. The final chapter deals with electrodynamics. The material in the book is carefully illustrated with figures and examples, and there are over 100 exercises.

Readers should be familiar with first-year algebra and advanced calculus. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers interested in delving into geometric analysis and its applications to mathematical physics. ... Read more

    Product Description
For the past 4 billion years, the chemistry of the Earth's surface, where all life exists, has changed remarkably. Historically, these changes have occurred slowly enough to allow life to adapt and evolve. In more recent times, the chemistry of the Earth is being altered at a staggering rate, fueled by industrialization and an ever-growing human population. Human activities, from the rapid consumption of resources to the destruction of the rainforests and the expansion of smog-covered cities, are all leading to rapid changes in the basic chemistry of the Earth.
The Second Edition of Biogeochemistry considers the effects of life on the Earth's chemistry on a global level. This expansive text employs current technology to help students extrapolate small-scale examples to the global level, and also discusses the instrumentation being used by NASA and its role in studies of global change. With the Earth's changing chemistry as the focus, this text pulls together the many disparate fields that are encompassed by the broad reach of biogeochemistry. With extensive cross-referencing of chapters, figures, and tables, and an interdisciplinary coverage of the topic at hand, this text will provide an excellent framework for courses examining global change and environmental chemistry, and will also be a useful self-study guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written review
It was required reading book for my biogeochemistry class. I would say this book covers a lot of topics and is well written. It described concisely the general picture of the global biogeochemistry. So if someone is interested in reviewing general concepts and idea about global biogeochemistry, I would certainly recommend this book. Although being short was advantage of the book, it is also its drawback. Therefore sometimes someone might find that you need more information in order to fully understand mechanism behind certain process or calculation. If you are already familiar with the concept and got general idea, then this book might bore you. Otherwise, I would say, this is right book for someone who is just interested in seeing big picture and ignoring the details.

This book, while slightly dated now, as much science has been done since it was published is still very thorough on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid science
I bought this book to prepare for my comprehensive exam. Book consists of two parts: first part describes the generalities of physical/chemical/biological properties of atmosphere, soils, oceans; it also contains the description of the specifics of each cycle (main biogeochemical elements) in all those environment. The second part describes the cycles on the global scale, with up-to-date references to today`s situation on carbon dioxide concentration and prospects on global climate change. Very good material andvery good explanation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of the Subject
I actually took Biogeochemistry from Dr. Schlesinger last fall and I do feel that the book is a good survey of alot of geochemical cycles and is presented at an undergraduate level.
However, some of the information, particularly about methane, was severely broken up throughout the text to the point where it was difficult to put together complete chemical cycles of some elements..
Nevertheless, it gives the reader the broad brush strokes necessary to get up to speed, particularly if you do not have a strong science background. For those who are very familiar to the sciences, you can get much more complete information from review papers than is presented here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a good textbook
I had to buy this for a Biogeochemical Cycles class. The book is great! It's actual readable, which I was never expecting. It's interesting and understandable. The first reviewer is right that it doesn't get too complex, but references out the more difficult parts.I appreciated not having to read the way-too-hard stuff on my first introduction to this subject. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Technical Analysis Applications In The Global Currency Markets Second Edition
Having always been intrigued by the FX market but also having never traded a day in my life I bought this book and his other with the intent of learning the basics.I wanted to get an overall view of wha the FX was and how I could trade in it.I believe it has done what I wanted and helped me to greatly understand the MANY different aspects of trading.I would say that it covers the basic aspects while only slightly delving deeper into some of the more complex issues. I believe one of the greatest things about this book is that it has helped me to figure out which directions I need to pursue as well as which I don't.I have read some other comments on this book and am rather appalled that people actually take the time to make negative and unsubstantiated claims about the author, his knowledge and experience. If you are disattisfied with the book, state your reasons why and perhaps make a constructive recommendation.Otherwise, all you're doing is wasting my time. This book is probably not for someone who is experienced and has a fair command of their trading. For someone who is looking for a clear, concise discourse on the basics this is definitely the book for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars To be critical is to be constructive.
If this book is very bad, I am glad to learn it from people who consider themselves knowledgeable and who have read it.But should it be possible for such critics to propose another reference which they appreciated the content. It would be much more instructive for readers who are shopping for quality books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not any help at all...
As a Foreign Currency Dealer, I was NOT helped from this book at all! Actually the title is misleading since he does NOT concentrate on FX, he only shows some graph examples using FX crosses instead of stocks... The author just refers to a lot of TA indicators only reviewing their typical Buy and Sell signals that are written in every TA book, and furthermore the sections are very bad structured. Really very very disappointed!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Very good book
This is a very good book. If you want to start trading currency online(like me) you must read this book first.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent value!!
I haven't completed the book but if I never read another page it's well worth what I payed compared to some prices of other simular books on the market. I don't know what the initial cost was, but those who wrote the unfavorable reviews should have waited to purchase. Maybe they would have been more positive. ... Read more

    Product Description
Among nonlinear PDEs, dispersive and wave equations form an important class of equations. These include the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the nonlinear wave equation, the Korteweg de Vries equation, and the wave maps equation. This book is an introduction to the methods and results used in the modern analysis (both locally and globally in time) of the Cauchy problem for such equations. Starting only with a basic knowledge of graduate real analysis and Fourier analysis, the text first presents basic nonlinear tools such as the bootstrap method and perturbation theory in the simpler context of nonlinear ODE, then introduces the harmonic analysis and geometric tools used to control linear dispersive PDE. These methods are then combined to study four model nonlinear dispersive equations. Through extensive exercises, diagrams, and informal discussion, the book gives a rigorous theoretical treatment of the material, the real-world intuition and heuristics that underlie the subject, as well as mentioning connections with other areas of PDE, harmonic analysis, and dynamical systems. As the subject is vast, the book does not attempt to give a comprehensive survey of the field, but instead concentrates on a representative sample of results for a selected set of equations, ranging from the fundamental local and global existence theorems to very recent results, particularly focusing on the recent progress in understanding the evolution of energy-critical dispersive equations from large data. The book is suitable for a graduate course on nonlinear PDE. Readership Graduate students and research mathematicians interested in nonlinear partial differential equations. ... Read more

A brand new appendix by Oscar Garcia-Prada graces this third edition of a classic work. In developing the tools necessary for the study of complex manifolds, this comprehensive, well-organized treatment presents in its opening chapters a detailed survey of recent progress in four areas: geometry (manifolds with vector bundles), algebraic topology, differential geometry, and partial differential equations. Wells’s superb analysis also gives details of the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations on Kahler manifolds, Griffiths's period mapping, quadratic transformations, and Kodaira's vanishing and embedding theorems. Oscar Garcia-Prada’s appendix gives an overview of the developments in the field during the decades since the book appeared.

    Product Description

As globalization continues apace, market segmentations are diminishing, distance is shrinking and the boundaries between nation states are becoming increasingly blurred. National economies are closely interlinked through manychannels and we rarely view things from a single country’s view, adopting a global perspective instead. It is therefore imperative to understand how the world economy functions.

This book utilizes up to date empirical evidence to illuminate the mechanics of the world as a single entity. The author explores the properties of the world economy, the diverse mechanisms of interdependence, shocks and disturbances, economic processes and structures, and the institutional arrangements that guide these processes. Key topics covered include:

    • world GDP, growth and global product and factor markets
    • China as a new global player
    • the roots and impact of financial and currency crises
    • the performance of the developing countries over time (which have gained, which have lost?)
    • conflicts between the national interest and global concerns (protectionism, locational competition for mobile factors of production, environmental issues)
    • the institutional arrangements for the world economy (IMF, WTO).

The World Economy: A Global Analysis will be essential reading for students studying the world economy from the perspective of economics, finance, business and politics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A world of economic knowledge
If you think international trade and finance can only be viewed in the light of MacDonalds, Starbucks and the Gap, then you might not like this book - stick to your Krugmans and your Salvatores.

However, if you think there is a world outside the United States and that different countries' concerns need to be taken into account, then this book is for you.

Statistically impressive and brilliantly written, this book is the current benchmark for anyone wanting to know about the world economy as a whole. ... Read more
