Product Description
Due to the general complementary convex structure underlyingmost nonconvex optimization problems encountered in applications, convex analysis plays an essential role in the development of globaloptimization methods. This book develops a coherent and rigoroustheory of deterministic global optimization from this point of view.Part I constitutes an introduction to convex analysis, with anemphasis on concepts, properties and results particularly needed forglobal optimization, including those pertaining to the complementaryconvex structure. Part II presents the foundation and application ofglobal search principles such as partitioning and cutting, outer andinner approximation, and decomposition to general global optimizationproblems and to problems with a low-rank nonconvex structure as wellas quadratic problems. Much new material is offered, aside from arigorous mathematical development.
Audience: The book is written as a text for graduate students inengineering, mathematics, operations research, computer science andother disciplines dealing with optimization theory. It is alsoaddressed to all scientists in various fields who are interested inmathematical optimization. ... Read more

Product Description
Despite its great importance, there are surprisingly few economic studies of the impact of climate on agriculture and how agriculture can adapt under a variety of conditions. This book examines 22 countries across four continents, including both developed and developing economies. It provides both a good analytical basis for additional work and solid results for policy debate concerning income distributional effects such as abatement, adaptation, and equity.

Agriculture and grazing are a central sector in the livelihood of many people, particularly in developing countries. This book uses the Ricardian method to examine the impact of climate change on agriculture. The book also quantifies how farmers adapt to climate. The findings suggest that agriculture in developing countries is more sensitive to climate than agriculture in developed countries. Rain-fed cropland is generally more sensitive to warming than irrigated cropland and cropland is more sensitive than livestock. The adaptation to climate change results reveal that farmers make many adjustments including switching crops and livestock species, adopting irrigation, and moving between livestock and crops. The results also reveal that impacts and adaptations vary a great deal across landscapes, suggesting that adaptation policies must be location specific. Finally, the book suggests a research agenda for the future.

Economists in academia and the public sector, policy analysts and development agencies will find this broad study illuminating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surveys twenty-two countries around the globe and includes both first world and third world nations
While it is now finally accepted by the general populace as well as the scientific community, global warming is continuing to have a dramatic impact on the environment world-wide with potentially devastating results for human civilization. The latest addition to the outstanding 'New Horizons in Environmental Economics' series published by Edward Elgar Publishing, "Climate Change and Agriculture: An Economic Analysis of Global Impacts, Adaptation and Distributional Effects" is the collaborative work of Robert Mendelsohn (Edwin Weyerhaeuser Davis Professor, School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University) and Ariel Dinar (Professor of Environmental Economics and Policy and Director, Water Science and Policy Center, University of California, Riverside). It should be noted that "Climate Change And Agriculture" was written while Professor Dinar was also serving as the Lead Economist of the Development Research Group at the World Bank). The specific focus of this seminal work is on the economic impact of climate change on agriculture world wide, and how faced with the resultant environmental alterations, agriculture might adapt under varied and varying conditions. The work surveys twenty-two countries around the globe and includes both first world and third world nations. Of special note is the suggested research agenda for future and continuing studies of climate change impacts upon agriculture throughout the coming decades. Enhanced with a detailed and comprehensive index, "Climate Change And Agriculture" is highly recommended for academic library Environmental Studies and Economic Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists. ... Product Description
Evidence from the United States suggests that technological change is a key factor in understanding both medical expenditure growth and recent dramatic improvements in the health of people with serious illnesses. Yet little international research has examined how the causes and consequences of technological change in health care differ worldwide. Seeking to illuminate these issues, this volume documents how use of high-technology treatments for heart attack changed in fifteen developed countries over the 1980s and 1990s. Drawn from the collaborative effort of seventeen research teams in fifteen countries, it provides a cross-country analysis of microdata that illuminates the relationships between public policies toward health care, technology, costs, and health outcomes.
The comparisons presented here confirm that the use of medical technology in treatment for heart attack is strongly related to incentives, and that technological change is an important cause of medical expenditure growth in all developed countries. Each participating research team reviewed the economic and regulatory incentives provided by their country's health system, and major changes in those incentives over the 1980s and 1990s, according to a commonly used framework. Such incentives include: the magnitude of out-of-pocket costs to patients, the generosity of reimbursement to physicians and hospitals, regulation of the use of new technologies or the supply of physicians, regulation of competition, and the structure of hospital ownership. Each team also reviewed how care for heart attacks has changed in their country over the past decade.
The book will be of enormous importance to health economists, medical researchers and epidemiologists, and policymakers.

Product Description
Global fixed-income markets, both securities and their derivatives, have registered phenomenal growth over the past two decades, yet many instruments and strategies are often misunderstood and, as a result, mishandled for the purposes of effective risk management.

This comprehensive new book explains and clarifies the essential building blocks underlying the pricing and risk analysis of fixed-income securities and derivatives-using mathematics lightly, to make things easier, not harder. The emphasis throughout is on how-to-do, on building operational knowledge from the ground up. There are more than 300 examples and exhibits based on current market data.

The international dimension is also an integral part of the analysis. A true global financial village has emerged, heavily dependent for its operations on real-time international telecommunications networks. The focus of this book is on instruments which can be freely traded internationally, generally without controls, taxes, or other restrictions. You will find essential information on:
* The global money market
* Foreign exchange transactions and foreign exchange derivatives
* Bonds and zero coupon bonds-including a risk management-driven discussion
of duration and convexity
* Interest rate swaps, currency swaps, and exchange-traded futures
* Stochastic models and option pricing
* Stochastic models of the yield curve

Written for a wide range of finance professionals and packed with a wealth of exhibits, this is the ideal resource for anyone seeking a firmer grasp of this important topic.

Product Description
This book lays the foundations of differential calculus in infinite dimensions and discusses those applications in infinite dimensional differential geometry and global analysis not involving Sobolev completions and fixed point theory. The approach is simple: a mapping is called smooth if it maps smooth curves to smooth curves. Up to Frechet spaces, this notion of smoothness coincides with all known reasonable concepts. In the same spirit, calculus of holomorphic mappings (including Hartogs' theorem and holomorphic uniform boundedness theorems) and calculus of real analytic mappings are developed. Existence of smooth partitions of unity, the foundations of manifold theory in infinite dimensions, the relation between tangent vectors and derivations, and differential forms are discussed thoroughly. Special emphasis is given to the notion of regular infinite dimensional Lie groups. Many applications of this theory are included: manifolds of smooth mappings, groups of diffeomorphisms, geodesics on spaces of Riemannian metrics, direct limit manifolds, perturbation theory of operators, and differentiability questions of infinite dimensional representations. ... Product Description
Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE): CoastalEcosystems analyzes quantitative and qualitative information anddevelops selected indicators of the condition of the world's coastalecosystems and marine fisheries. Specifically the study looks atmeasures that show the degree of human modification of coastal zoneand what we know concerning five important goods and services providedby coastal ecosystems: filtering water, food, biodiversity, shorelinestabilization, and tourism.

Results from the PAGE analysis show that human activities haveextensively altered coastal ecosystems worldwide. Nearly 30 percent ofthe land area in the world's coastal ecosystems had already beenextensively altered or destroyed by growing demand for housing, industry, and recreation. Globally, the number of people living within100 km of the coast increased from roughly 2 billion in 1990 to 2.2billion in 1995—four out of every ten people in the world. Ascoastal and inland populations continue to grow, their impacts—interms of pollutant loads and the development and conversion of coastalhabitats—can be expected to grow as well. Nutrient pollution hasincreased dramatically this century due to greater use of fertilizers, growth in quantities of domestic and industrial sewage, and increasedaquaculture, which releases considerable amounts of waste directlyinto the water. Increasing fishing pressure have left many major fishstocks depleted or in decline. Global climate change may compoundother pressures on coastal ecosystems through the additional effectsof warmer ocean temperatures, altered ocean circulation patterns, changing storm frequency, and rising sea levels. ... Product Description
In their pursuit of policies to combat global warming, countries will find that they may also receive additional benefits which are not directly associated with the primary aim. These ancillary benefits are likely to include, for example, a reduction in pollution as a result of carbon containment policies. International Climate Policy to Combat Global Warming is one of the first books which analyzes climate policy, taking account of ancillary as well as primary benefits.

The author integrates ancillary benefits into the theory and explores the implications for international policy measures. Because of the private character of ancillary benefits, the author is able to treat climate policy as an impure public good which in turn has an impact on the efficient climate protection level. He highlights the general failures of the standard approach to climate policy design and goes on to propose a new approach to international negotiations on climate change. He suggests a flexible matching scheme which would help overcome free-rider incentives and which would have considerable advantages over traditional co-operative designs.

By proposing a novel framework for the analysis of, and solution to, the problem of global warming, this book will be welcomed by environmental and ecological economists, policymakers and researchers of political science. ... Read more

Product Description
It is a recent tendency to put emphasis on the applied side of mathematics. The entirely new development in applied fields, however, has been done often in combination with ideas and methods in pure mathematics which are seemingly not related to practical problems. Conversely, many problems in pure mathematics stem from questions raised in other fields. These Proceedings show the reader that this phenomenon is in particular prominent in pure and applied analysis. Abstract theory in functional analysis and global analysis turns out to be useful to solve problems in many branches of natural sciences, for example, biology, physics and chemistry. The International Conference on Functional Analysis and Global Analysis, held 20-26 October 1996 at the University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus, brought together mathematicians in the Southeast and East Asia to foster better cooperation for scientific development. The conference addressed the problems and applications to mathematical theories and models in Functional and Global analysis, the topics being covered by over 20 invited international speakers from prestigious academic institutions around the globe, and presented in this book. The reader will discover a harmony between pure analysis and applied analysis in the excellent articles contained here which cover topics in evolution equations, mathematical methods for phase transitions, quantum ergodicity, wavelet analysis and dynamical systems. ...
