Product Description
A critical step in improving the way we manage theearth's ecosystems is to take stock of their condition and theircapacity to provide the goods and services we will need in years tocome. The Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE) aims to addressthis gap. The PAGE compares existing and new information on a globalscale about the condition of five major classes of ecosystems:agroecosystems, coastal areas, forests, freshwater systems, andgrasslands.

The PAGE Freshwater Systems study presented here, analyzesquantitative and qualitative information and develops selectedindicators of the condition of the world's freshwater systems.Thecondition is defined as the current and future capacity of the systemsto continue providing the full range of goods and services needed orvalued by humans. Specifically the study looks at measures that showthe degree of human intervention in the hydrological cycle and what weknow concerning three important goods and services provided byfreshwater systems: water, food, and biodiversity. These goods andservices were chosen partly on the advice of a wide range offreshwater experts and partly because of data availability.

Results from the PAGE analysis show that human activities haveseverely affected the condition of freshwater systems worldwide. Eventhough humans have increased the amount of water available for usewith dams and reservoirs, more than 40 percent of the world'spopulation lives in conditions of water stress. This percentage isestimated to grow to almost 50 percent by 2025 .Surface andgroundwater is being degraded in almost all regions of the world byintensive agriculture and rapid urbanization, aggravating the waterscarcity problem. In addition, lack of access to clean water continuesto be a leading cause of illness and death in much of the developingworld. Food production from wild fisheries has been affected byhabitat degradation, overexploitation, and pollution to a point wheremost of these resources are not sustainable without fisheryenhancements. Finally, the capacity of freshwater ecosystems tosupport biodiversity is highly degraded at a global level, with manyfreshwater species facing rapid population declines or extinction. ... Read more

Product Description
The intended audience of the book is the group of scientists and engineers who need to deal with nonlinear systems and who are particularly interested in studying the global behavior of these systems. This book introduces such a reader to the methods of cell-to-cell mapping. These methods are believed to provide a new framework of global analysis for nonlinear systems. They are based upon the idea of discretizing a continuum state space into cells, and casting the evolution of a system in the form of a cell-to-cell mapping. Up to now, two kinds of cell-mapping, simple and generalized, have been introduced and studied. These methods allow us to perform the task of locating all the attractors and domains of attraction in an effective manner. Generalized cell-mapping is particularly attractive because it can deal not only with fractally dimensioned entities of deterministic systems, but also with stochastic systems. The main purpose of the book is to make the scattered published results on cell-mapping readily available in one source. The reader, after seeing the power and potential of this new approach, will hopefully want to explore various possibilities of cell-mapping to develop new methodologies for use in his own field of research. ... Product Description
There has been much recent progress in global optimizationalgorithms for nonconvex continuous and discrete problems from both atheoretical and a practical perspective. Convex analysis plays afundamental role in the analysis and development of globaloptimization algorithms. This is due to the fact that virtually allnonconvex optimization problems can be described using differences ofconvex functions and differences of convex sets.

A conference on Convex Analysis and Global Optimization was held June5-9, 2000 at Pythagorian, Samos, Greece. It was in honor of the memoryof C. Caratheodory (1873-1950). It was endorsed by the MathematicalProgramming Society (MPS) and by the Society for industrial andApplied Mathematics (SIAN) Activity Group in Optimization. This volume contains a selection of refereed papers based on invitedand contributing talks presented at the conference. The two themes ofconvexity and global optimization pervade the book. The conference provided a forum for researchers working on differentaspects of convexity and global optimization to present their recentdiscoveries, and to interact with people working on complementaryaspects of mathematical programming.

Audience: Faculty, graduate students, and researchers inmathematical programming, computer science, and engineering. ... Read more
