Product Description
This volume contains selected papers that focus on the use of linear algebra, computational statistics, and computer science in the development of algorithms and software systems for text retrieval. Experts in information modeling and retrieval share their perspectives on the design of scalable but precise text retrieval systems, revealing many of the challenges and obstacles that mathematical and statistical models must overcome to be viable for automated text processing. This very useful proceedings is an excellent companion for courses in information retrieval, applied linear algebra, and applied statistics.

Computational Information Retrieval provides background material on vector space models for text retrieval that applied mathematicians, statisticians, and computer scientists may not be familiar with. For graduate students in these areas, several research questions in information modeling are exposed. In addition, several case studies concerning the efficacy of the popular Latent Semantic Analysis (or Indexing) approach are provided. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In Great Condition
I ordered a textbook and it was in great shape with a quick response time for getting it shipping.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's just as difficult as the reviews are saying
I read the chapters, I know the material, and when I get to the questions I can't answer any of them.It became incredibly frustrating because I did what I was suppose to do and even then it's impossible to go about solving the problems. For a while I thought I was just an idiot, maybe I am, I don't know anymore.I feel like a piece of tape that's lost its stickiness and can't stick to anything anymore. That's exactly what this book will reduce you to.

The worst part is is it's all simple math, adding, subtracting, and multiplying.

I hate this book.

It's hard to avoid a book that's mandatory for a class, but if you have other options I suggest you steer away from this one.I've never seen a more poorly written text book in both my undergrad and grad level courses! This book is a complete disaster. The questions/problems at the end of the chapter assigned for homework do not have supporting examples to learn from.It is a complete guessing game at how to arrive at the correct answer.I had to buy this book for my class but do not plan on using it afterwards. It is completely worthless! ... Product Description
Through four editions, Juran’s Quality Planning and Analysis has provided students and professionals with an authoritative treatment of the subject that goes beyond statistical techniques.

The fifth edition of this highly regarded classic book on managing for quality, Juran’s Quality Planning and Analysis for Enterprise Quality, combines the pioneering concepts of Dr. Joseph M. Juran and the teachings of the late Dr. Frank M. Gryna with the insights and experience of today’s leading trainers and practitioners at the Juran Institute: Dr. Richard Chua, Executive VP and Joseph A. DeFeo, President & Executive Coach.

The trademark Juran Institute approach has been retained, developing the viewpoint that the achievement of quality products and services requires the application of managerial, technological, statistical, and behavioral actions throughout all functions of an organization. With real-world problems provided in each chapter, students are faced with realities that confront managers, designers, engineers, marketers, operations personnel, users, and others involved in enterprise quality.

This text will challenge readers to make assumptions, estimate economics, reach data-driven conclusions, and adapt themselves to the imperfect world of the practitioner.Students and professionals will also find this book useful as they prepare for various certifications such as the Certified Quality Engineer, Reliability Engineer, Quality Manager, Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference book

4-0 out of 5 stars Used books without a problem
I recently bought a book for one of my college courses, it was cheaper than in the bookstore and I got it in two weeks, did not have a problem with the buyer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Updated classic
This book provides an exceptionally comprehensive treatment of managing for quality in the context of an overall enterprise (take a look at the table of contents). It is a great introductory text to the basic concepts of quality management that underly various continuous improvement initiatives of recent years (e.g., Lean Six Sigma), with lots of real-life examples to help illustrate important tools and methods.Additionally, it is a practical reference for more detailed topics such as statistical data analysis, hypothesis testing, and DOE.This is a new edition (the prior edition was published in 2001), and has some new features that help facilitate its use as a course textbook, including Minitab® problem sets, instructor's manual, and web links.Unlike some technical texts, it does a good job in treating topics in bite-sized sections that don't leave the reader exhausted.I'd recommend this book to anyone that practices quality management, may be involved in quality improvement initiatives, or is in operations or engineering disciplines. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Missing 35 pages. AWFUL!
I received it in time but it was missing 35 pages. Tried to contact seller and got no reply. It's my fault for buying this used I guess.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disaster
This book is all what maintenance people don't need: tones of vague explanations that should show author's broad knowledge, but are very complicated and incomplete at the same time - and no practice at alll.

Authors all the time state that broader explanations should be searched for somewhere else. But then why to introduce so many complex terms, for instance in chapter dedicated to variable frequence drives, and then not to finish a single theme in a manner anybody could use it in practice.

Talking about practice - practical tips in 750 pages book stated as handbook for maintenance people are squezeed in no more then 2 pages of very general talk.

And what about theory? In addition to what is mentioned for variable frequency drivehere is an exemple how authors cover grounding: one or two sentences like "grounding is good measure for protection and you can find details in NEC" (!!!)

I could find many different examples, but the "thin line" in the book is a feeling that it was never intended to be useful to anybody but the authors that want to make many on careless buyers (like myself sometimes).

To conclude, maintenance people should totally avoid this book.

And what a price! You can find valuable maintenance books full of practical tips, experience and cleverly explained theoretical thems important in maintenance for $20 (IPT or Audel books) and look at the price of this book!

I would really like to sell my copy but it would be unfair not to warn possible buyer... ... Read more

Product Description
This fourth edition of Simulation with Arena has the same goal as the first three editions: to provide a comprehensive treatment of simulation concepts in general and the Arena simulation software in particular. It starts by having the reader develop simple, well-animated, high-level models, and then progresses to advanced modeling and analysis.Statistical design and analysis of simulation experiments is integrated with the modeling chapters, reflecting the joint nature of these activities in good simulation studies. The objective is to help the reader carry out effective simulation modeling, analysis, and projects using the Arena simulation system. An informal, tutorial writing style is used to aid the beginner in fully understanding the ideas and topics presented.Included is a CD containing the current version of the Arena academic software and the examples referenced throughout the text.

Starting with an introduction to simulation concepts, the book progresses through an overview of the Arena software, basic model development, input analysis, additional modeling constructs, output analysis, and advanced modeling. It also includes chapters on integrating Arena simulation models with other applications, specialized statistical issues, continuous simulation, and conducting a successful simulation study. It is intended primarily to be a text in a first course on simulation or for self-study.However, the later chapters could be incorporated into an advanced or graduate-level course.

Building on the success of the first three editions, published in 1998, 2002, and 2004, this edition retains the basic outline and tutorial style, built around a sequence of successively more complicated examples. All the examples and discussion, however, have been modified and updated to be consistent with the current version of the Arena software, and additional examples have been developed, along with more exercises. As before, a password-protected website for instructors provides support in terms of downloadable lecture slides and solutions to end-of-chapter exercises.

The book draws heavily on the experience and expertise of the authors, a professor at the University of Cincinnati specializing in simulation, and two seasoned members of Rockwell Software (formerly Systems Modeling), the developers of Arena, who are active in product design and development, training, consulting, and applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for its purpose
I believe the book does a good job of explaining how Arena works. It even has detail on implementing some of the Visual Basic for Applications which you can program to provide custom programming in your simulation. Arena is derived from the study of discrete event systems (DES), which you will need to study elsewhere. Arena provides animation of a simulated system such as a factory. However, the animation suffers jitters and jags due to the DES implementation. Arena's crudities are certainly not the author's fault. Kudos to the author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Excellent guide of the major functionalities of arena 10.00.
However, it seems that there a lot more to cover to have a good grasp of Arena.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding textbook for first simulation course
I teach a simulation course using this book. It is one of the best textbooks I have ever used in any discipline. It is extremely well designed for an undergraduate audience. For more emphasis on the statistical fundamentals of simulation, I recommend Law and Kelton's graduate book, but if your goal is to complete a project for a company, or to prepare a comprehensive undergraduate simulation course with plenty of modeling examples and useful exercises, then this is the book that will take you from zero to hero.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit too messy
This book has been co-authored by a university professor and two Rockwell people. It neither serves its purpose as a "theory" book nor an "applied" book.
It leads you through the process of creating a simulation by using examples.
I would have preferred this to be more of a reference book answering questions such as"If I want to do this what modules should I use?". Instead, when faced with a minor question (e.g. how to count exiting entities with different attributes?) I end up reading half the book and still not find a suitable answer.
The occasionnal jokes are quite funny though! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It was a good deal too
The Book was in good shape. It was a good deal too

thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars A timeless reference
I won't repeat what the others have said.I will just say it is an excellent book.I first purchased the book in 1987 for a college class. Unlike most other computer books I've purchased through the years, this book is as valuable a reference today as it was in 1987.In fact, I refer to it so often (and lend it out so often) I have two copies, one in my home library and one on my quick reference shelf (right next to the dictionary) in the office. In my opinion, if one is serious about understanding simulations and computer modeling for analysis purposes this is a must have reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it if you need to write your first simulation program
Before reading this book I didn't have a clue about simulation modeling, but after reading the first few chapters I was able to write my first simulation program in C++. Although authors use C language and global data for simulation state, you can easily apply the concept of simulation state to any object-oriented language and replace global simulation state with object state.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible for Simulation
There are other books for giving you the simulation techniques and languages but to know the theory and statistics of simulation this is THE book.It startes with basics of statisstics and deals everthing you need to know about simulation. At some point you will start wondering how the authors could give so much information in just one book and lose lots of royalty money on the succeeding books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better understanding, rather than point and click
This book is the ground foundation of simulation modeling. Currently, only few books in simulation will spend pages and time, dedicated to the theoretical issues as good as this book.If you're tired of point-and-click or "how-to making one server queueing system" and you want to know the fundamental of simulation, you can't overlook this piece of jewel. I don't agree with one review that you have to understand statistics in order to get this book.Simulation is a probabilistic model. Using simulation without understanding statistics results in serious trouble since it will be only a toy (data), not a tool (information. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars collection of sophisticated numerical packages
The book is a collection of independent papers on specialised problems and numerical methods. Describing at a high level how various software packages, like Diffpack, can be used to tackle computationally intensive problems.

There is a tremendous variation in the problems. Some arise out of traditional classical mechanics, including fluid mechanics. Others use the availability of GIS data as a starting point.

Perhaps you can treat this book as a survey of very sophisticated numerical packages. Where for the context of your work, you might find a package germane, instead of using general purpose tools like Mathematica or Maple, or coding from scratch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Applied Math for Food Service
I really appreciate buying my text books from Amazon this way. You can really save a lot of money when purchasing and make better money when selling. My professor turned me on to this book to help me figure out how to apply the math for recipe conversions, yield factors, measurement conversions, food cost percentages, etc.... Math has never been one of my better subjects, therefore this book spells it out very easily.

2-0 out of 5 stars not worth even half the price
This author doesn't do a very good job of explaining concepts, and does not give enough examples. When you convert a recipe to a larger number of servings and end up with 2.9375 cups of something, would you really measure 2-15/16 cups of something? Would the average food service student know whether to convert that to ounces, or even how to convert a decimal to a fraction? Even my instructor hates this book and is looking for a replacement. I wouldn't be so bitter if I had only paid $5, which is what this book is really worth!
