Product Description
Just the math skills you need to excel in the study or practice of engineering

Good math skills are indispensable for all engineers regardless of their specialty, yet only a relatively small portion of the math that engineering students study in college mathematics courses is used on a frequent basis in the study or practice of engineering. That's why Essential Math Skills for Engineers focuses on only these few critically essential math skills that students need in order to advance in their engineering studies and excel in engineering practice.

Essential Math Skills for Engineers features concise, easy-to-follow explanations that quickly bring readers up to speed on all the essential core math skills used in the daily study and practice of engineering. These fundamental and essential skills are logically grouped into categories that make them easy to learn while also promoting their long-term retention. Among the key areas covered are:

  • Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, complex arithmetic, and differential and integral calculus

  • Simultaneous, linear, algebraic equations

  • Linear, constant-coefficient, ordinary differential equations

  • Linear, constant-coefficient, difference equations

  • Linear, constant-coefficient, partial differential equations

  • Fourier series and Fourier transform

  • Laplace transform

  • Mathematics of vectors

With the thorough understanding of essential math skills gained from this text, readers will have mastered a key component of the knowledge needed to become successful students of engineering. In addition, this text is highly recommended for practicing engineers who want to refresh their math skills in order to tackle problems in engineering with confidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Book for Engineers
Engineers are "consumers" of math-we don't develop new mathematical techniques or proofs. This text, like the Booth and Stroud series in Engineering Mathematics understands and fills this need well.

I like the fact that the author carefully picked examples that illustrate the concepts that are critical.

The critical advantage this book has is the fact that it is much smaller than Booth and Stroud's books and hence more likely to be used.

4-0 out of 5 stars An "iron ration" of engineering math for students & pro's
Saves much time and effort by covering ONLY those mathematical techniques that are MOST OFTEN USED in engineering. Includes material on elementary math, simultaneous equations and matrices, derivatives and integrals, ODEs, PDEs, difference equations, Fourier series/transforms, the Laplace transform & vectors (including div, curl, grad, integral theorems, etc.). (No probability or statistics.) I have only one criticism, which is more of a missing theme. The author doesn't mention the importance of transforming to a frame of reference or coordinate system in which a problem is easier to solve. Thus no mention of spherical/cylindrical coordinates, matrix similarity transformation/diagonalization, etc. But this is by no means a fatal flaw. 1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle version unreadable
The questions on the Kindle version are sometimes on a different page from the answer set.The example problems are also sometimes too small to read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good content ruined by TERRIBLE layout
I've used several other GMAT books, including Kaplans own GMAT 800 (which is great). I bought this to get more math questions and explanations, and was horribly disappointed. The layout of this book is TERRIBLE-- the questions are all presented in groups by topic, with the answers scattered at the end of each chapter instead of following a group of questions, which means the answers are usually 10-40 pages behind the questions you are answering. To make matters worse, the answer keys DON'T HAVE LETTERS, so you can't jot down your answers as you go and quickly compare at the end (you have to write down the entire correct answer... doesn't that defeat the point of a *multiple choice* test?

I am colossally disappointed, and will be seeing if Kaplan actually will back up their promise of a refund for dissatisfied customers.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of money!
Once you hit a major math mistake you cannot trust that this book is going to help. It has basic math rules dead wrong, and you're supposed to be mastering that for the test. Now I don't even want to open the verbal workbook.

3-0 out of 5 stars Typos make it frustrating, but overall, a good math refresher.
I liked this book because of the format and the detailed review of basic concepts (especially helpful after being out of school for 8 years!). The typos, however, made it frustrating at times. Not that you couldn't do the problems because of the typos, but sometimes the answers didn't match what you calculated, and you KNOW you calculated correctly. Some simple typos replace variables "q" with "p" and that sort of thing. Like I said, frustrating since this is supposed to prep me for what may be the most important test I take in my adult life, but not a deal-breakers. I still recommend buying this book. I too got through it is in a week, easily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for someone out of school for 8 years
I bought this book last summer (2009) and completed every practice and word question in the book which took me about 3 months taking my sweet time - you may do it much quicker.I BOMBED the Data Sufficiency portion even after all that studying and had no idea what I was going to do about the essays, so I enrolled in the Kaplan Online Course (the second cheapest option they offer at $599).The Online Course allows you to go through all of their "Core Courses" plus extra practice/-in-depth questions that help refine your knowledge in each subject. The other nice thing is that it comes with 6 full CAT tests (in addition to the free ones provided by [...]).Great tool - I am so glad I didn't pay for the more expensive courses and I will always keep this book around for reference. P.S. I ultimately scored 100 points higher (640) than my diagnostic on my final GMAT. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for brushing up
I bought this book for my boyfriend, who was studying to take the steamfitter's entrance test. He said the math was a good refresher. I'd say the book was moderately useful. Probably most helpful for someone that hasn't looked at a math problem since high school and would like to pass the test to get into the union as an apprentice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect purchase!
I bought it for my boyfriend going to school for Plumbing Apprentice. Not only did he love it, his buddies are now asking where I got it!

Great purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Primer for beginning Pipefitter Trainees
I stumbled across this book about 10 years ago in a trade publication. At that time craft training was imperiled by the decline of the trade unions in our area and I was searching for a tool to help bolster training for young and inexperienced employees.I strongly disagree with the previous review that states this book is very boring.Over the last ten years I have bought about 30 copies of the book.Basic math principles as they apply to the pipefitting trade are laid out very well and easy to understand. Also, the author does a really good job of laying out step by step, the proper way to use a scientific calculator when working trade math formulas.

Product Description
Neural networks and fuzzy systems are model free control design approaches that represent an advantage over classical control when dealing with complicated nonlinear actuator dynamics. Neuro-Fuzzy Control of Industrial Systems with Actuator Nonlinearities brings neural networks and fuzzy logic together with dynamical control systems. Each chapter presents powerful control approaches for the design of intelligent controllers to compensate for actuator nonlinearities such as time delay, friction, deadzone, and backlash that can be found in all industrial motion systems, plus a thorough development, rigorous stability proofs, and simulation examples for each design. In the final chapter, the authors develop a framework to implement intelligent control schemes on actual systems.

Rigorous stability proofs are further verified by computer simulations, and appendices contain the computer code needed to build intelligent controllers for real-time applications. Neural networks capture the parallel processing and learning capabilities of biological nervous systems, and fuzzy logic captures the decision-making capabilities of human linguistics and cognitive systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars CUlinary Math has lots to offer
For those in the food trade or those who are learning the food trade, Culinary Math has a lot to offer. It is a refresher on on conversions, costing, metric, and much more. This book focuses on they types of math needed to build a standard recipe, convert a recipe, work out total costs and more. As much a workbook as a math text, the exercises are useful in setting these mathematical principles into your mind and is a good preparatory for on line certification in cost control. For those people who have been out of school for awhile and those who are weak in math, this book will be a tremendous help.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Considering the fact that I will be starting culinary school in a few weeks, this book was a great buy!I didn't realize how rusty I was with basic math until I started reading. This book is also great because it builds on each chapter plus the practice problems are very helpful. My only complaint is that the book only has answers to odd-numbered questions - would have loved answers to all the questions.I definitely recommend this book for someone who is pursuing a degree in culinary arts or someone who is in the food service industry and needs a refresher.
