Product Description
This series looks at the medical contributions and advances made over the centuries, from prehistoric times to the present day. Each book evaluates the major medical issues of the time and the key individuals who pushed medical knowledge into new territory. In this title, readers can discover how advances in technology and science brought new understanding about the causes of disease and how the body works. Improved public health measures and living standards meant people were better able to resist illness, and the growing professionalism of doctors and advances in surgical procedures saw the dawn of a new age in surgery, and laid the foundations for the improvements in medical treatment that were to come in the twentieth century. ... Product Description
Recent Developments in H¿ theory have produced a promising new design approach. However, a large gap between theory and practice has emerged, with as yet very few design examples applied to real industrial control problems. The work described in this monograph aims to narrow this gap, and to address implementation issues associated with multivariable H¿ controllers. An H¿ control law has been developed and tested for the DRA (Defence Research Agency) Bedford research Harrier. The first part of this text introduces the basic components of the flight control and engine systems and describes the models for the different sub-systems. The second part deals with implementational problems including the discretization process, handling limitations on actuators and the nonlinearities in the system. ... Read more

Product Description
Bridging the gap between power quality and signal processing

This innovative new text brings together two leading experts, one from signal processing and the other from power quality. Combining their fields of expertise, they set forth and investigate various types of power quality disturbances, how measurements of these disturbances are processed and interpreted, and, finally, the use and interpretation of power quality standards documents.

As a practical aid to readers, the authors make a clear distinction between two types of power quality disturbances:
* Variations: disturbances that are continuously present
* Events: disturbances that occur occasionally

A complete analysis and full set of tools are provided for each type of disturbance:
* Detailed examination of the origin of the disturbance
* Signal processing measurement techniques, including advanced techniques and those techniques set forth in standards documents
* Interpretation and analysis of measurement data
* Methods for further processing the features extracted from the signal processing into site and system indices

The depth of coverage is outstanding: the authors present and analyze material that is not covered in the standards nor found in the scientific literature.

This text is intended for two groups of readers: students and researchers in power engineering who need to use signal processing techniques for power system applications, and students and researchers in signal processing who need to perform power system disturbance analyses and diagnostics. It is also highly recommended for any engineer or utility professional involved in power quality monitoring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Fun
Everyone has so much fun.

I learned to teach by teaching these activities. Every project is green, and shows the student how to reuse. It taught me to be innovative in the classroom and even more green in my instruction.

Smart crafts: Structural Engineering, how to put things together so they stay together and work; Green: reuse. Recyclables are the soul of every project.

Unique art projects like a goose that really does lay an egg.

Each project has Step by step visual and verbal instructions. My students are challenged and love creating their own toys.

Encourages problems solving. Teaches kinetic energy. Stimulates the imagination. Kids build their own toys out of recyclables like cereal boxes, sour cream containers, milk jugs, paper tubes. The children are always enjoying themselves, laughing, playing, and helping each other.

Kids learn to create toys out of junk. Builds on social skills along with their engineering knowledge.

I love it, and recommend it to everyone. Even parents that home school. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Miscalculations
If you are writing a book that is solely text and you misspell a word, the concept will still be clear from the context of what is being written.

However when you are writing a technical book where math is being manipulated and you write 12 instead of 10 it is unacceptable.

It is diffcult to determine if the initial number was correct or the subsequent number is.Half the problem is in one number and half the problem is in the second number. You can just assert one of them but there is still a question in you mind about the book's answer.

There is no errata sheet for this book on the McGraw-Hill web site. You will not get as much from this book as you expect, due to the errors. ... Read more

This study examines the relationship between mathematics in high school and labor force earnings 10 years later.Using a series of statistical models to net out the true effect of curriculum, the authors control for as many other factors as the data allow:the student's demographic characteristics, measures of student motivation and ability, family background, and high school characteristics. After taking into account all of these factors, the authors find the direct relationship between curriculum and earnings remains quite strong. The analysis also shows that it is not simply the number of math courses a student takes that is important; what matters more is the extent to which students take more-demanding courses. ...
