This was required text so I really didn't have a choice choosing what book to use. The book is not written in a student friendly manner while the directions on how to use minitab, excel and graphing calculators are helpful the bulk of the content is not written in layman's terms and the examples are poor as well. For self-study or generally any purpose I would not recommend this book. I had to look-up definitions elsewhere for it to make sense. ... Read more

This is a great book covering all the details about statistics but you may wish to consider purchasing CRC Standard Mathematical Tables and Formulae instead. It covers most of the contents of the stats book for a few dollars more.

This reference is a good complement to a collection of standard statistics texts. Often, those texts have good explanations of their concepts. But then provide only limited tables of commonly encountered distributions. Part of this may be that to those authors, such tables let them add relatively little value. To an author, her value is in her origina musings, and not necessarily in filling the latter part of her book with reams of tables.

Thus, there is a natural inclination of statistics authors to only provide a modicum of tables. The barest minimum! Well, your answer to this might be to amass several texts, so that hopefully, the tables you need can be found in one of these.

An alternative is to get this book. Not a text, but a reference manual. Though the editors thoughtfully precede the tables with brief explanations of their usage and some cogent examples. You will find here the most commonly needed distributions in an easy to find and use format. ... Read more

This book has so many mistakes that it becomes difficult to interpret what the authors meant. Incorrect conclusions are drawn from the examples given. I would be ashamed to put my name on this work, especially as a proofreader or editor. Totally unacceptable for a mathematical text. I wouldn't trust the results of the author's statistical work, even though she enjoys belittling other people's work throughout.

I have read many popular statistics books and textbooks.This is quite possibly the best-written book of it's type, a concise introduction/review, and introductory (first-year stats) reference.I'm writing this because I don't think the existing reviews generally give this book enough credit.What's so good about it?

(1) The writing: very clear and concise.But not so concise so as to be difficult or "mysterious."When reading the book, there there several times when I read something, didn't quite understand the point, was certain that the author had tooquickly skimmed over the topic, only to turn the page and see a clear two or three paragraph explanation of the point I was trying to understand.The level at which the material is covered is just perfect for this sort of use: not too short so as to leave something out; not too long so as to make topics too complicated.The questions at the end of chapters are "just right" too.They are well chosen, clear, not superficial, but not too difficult.

(2) The organization of topics is very well done.The flow is very natural, and lends itself to effective and efficient coverage of the material.

This may not be the best book to learn statistics from scratch (perhaps a bit too concise, but actually still not too bad), and certainly not a good choice if you are looking for coverage or a reference for advanced topics.But if you are looking for a review, and perhaps an easy to read basic statistics reference, it can't be beat.Quite possibly the best book for this purpose available.

I recently received this book and immediately went to the O'Reilly errata [...]There was an extensive list, but after going through it I found that about 80% of the errors noted on it had already been corrected despite the fact that the book I received is still marked "First Edition".

I have yet to read the book, so please take my 4 star rating with a grain of salt, but I had to include that to publish this review. That being said, the fear of excessive typos and errors should no longer deter you from considering this book.

For a very long time I had been looking for a basic book--a sort of map if you will--to the myriad number of statistical tests available for conducting research. After speaking to multiple people and reviewing many books, I finally stumbled into two gems. The first one is Learning to use statistical tests in psychology by Judith Greene and Manuela D'Oliveira (209 pp.) Learning to Use Statistical Tests in Psychology. I loved the second edition but bought the third edition, which follows a similar line. In the third edition, however, the most important feature of the book, a set of decision charts fell off. The third edition only includes one chart and so you better make sure it is included before you buy, or write to Open University Press and they will send you a PDF you can print and paste in the back cover. The book is interesting and reads like a page turning novel. The focus is on helping you decide which of the many statistical tests should be selected when conducting a research study. I was looking for a book that spoke about Likert-type questions and the analysis required (answer = Chi-square) and was surprised that Likert scales are not mentioned. The advantage of the Greene-D'Oliveira book is that it has the decision chart and is translated into Spanish (which is important for me). A week later I found the second book, Statistics in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference by Sarah Boslaugh and Paul Andrew Watters (O'Reilly, 452 pp.) that had everything I was looking for and more. The book is also very well written and entertaining. It has a better index and includes a discussion of Likert scales and the Chi-square. Besides being more thorough, Boslaugh-Watters provide a better discussion of statistical packages. If I could only choose one of the two books, I would purchase Boslaugh-Watters, but I am thrilled to have found both of these superb reference books.

I purchased this book to brush up on some of the more advanced topics in statistics. As I remembered my undergrad stats experience to be a lot of proofs, I was drawn in by the "solid understanding without the numbing complexity of most textbooks" on the back cover.

There are just too many errors to be useful. I found myself going back more and more to my old statistics textbook from college. The examples are clearer and there are better problems to work through. And guess what? You can skip over the "numbing complexity" and still get more from a textbook than you will from "Statistics in a Nutshell."

Furthermore, I don't trust this title as a reference, as I typically have to validate what I'm researching with another textbook. It's quicker and easier to go to a source you know is correct from the start.

O'Reilly really needs to step up for this sloppy book: correct the mistakes and offer those of us with the first versions a free trade-in to the corrected version. ... Read more

    "Statistics for Dummies" by Deborah Rumsey is an Exceptional book! I completed statistics at both the undergraduate and graduate level and did not enjoy the courses! This book completely changed my attitude about statistics for the better! The book is well written and is logically broken down with each chapter focusing on specific statistical subjects! One thing I like about the book is that each chapter can stand on it's own. This book would be great to help prepare a student for an upcoming statistics course and is certainly better written than most college statistics textbooks I have seen. In fact, it might be a good idea if college/university statistics professors made this book a mandatory companion to the textbook they already use. Of course if any reader of this book feels the subject matter is not advanced enough, they may also purchase "Statistics 2 for Dummies" by the same author. Finally, the book was actually fun to read with much more "personality" than other books covering roughly the same subject matter.

    This book is generally an easy read and that may be its biggest plus. It is not so hard to read compared to other books on statistics. However, the book is too focused on polls instead of giving a general overview of the subject of statistics. On top of that it is not very well structured. It seems the sequence of the chapters is a bit random. The book does not flow in a logical and clear sequence.

    I really am enjoying this book and it puts the humor factor into struggling through a Statistics class at a local university.I would recommend it for both the information and for the comic relief when Statistics gets just TOO stressful!

    The content is of high quality and complex. This is not yet another statistics for dummies. If you have no background on statistics, you will be challenged reading this book. It doesn't water-down statistical concepts too much. It gives the conceptual (as opposed to totally quantitative view) of statistics in a cartoon format with plenty of well-thought out examples (both real life and hypothetical).

    The downfall of this book, of course, is that it doesn't provide statistical practice problems and solutions. In my humble opinion, the best way to learn statistics, or any other quantitative subject, is through lot of practice and mental challenges. Although your conceptual understanding of statistics will be enhanced through this book, your actual applicable knowledge of statistics may still remain stagnant.

    This might be a good first book or even a good review of statistics. But certainly, this book is not adequate for those who want to learn statistics for application to real data.

    Still, this is immensely well contemplated book and I must congratulate the authors for creating a thought provoking statistics overview book without too many statistical equations and problems. I also enjoyed the cartoons and humor.

    This book was listed as an optional textbook for an introductory statistics class, placing it on a shelf in the campus bookstore next to a book I needed to buy.My eye was attracted by the cartoon cover and, after a quick scan, I decided to buy it.It was worth it.

    Larry Gonick and Woollcott Smith cover the same content as many introductory statistics books.The eleven core chapters cover basic statistical concepts, the nature of data, and the essentials of probability, random variables, distributions, sampling, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, comparing samples, designing experiments and regression.It is a lot of material that flows quickly.The final chapter introduces "a biased sample" of advanced statistical techniques.A bibliography--reasonably up-to-date when the book was published--points the reader on to further learning about statistics.

    The book's title gives the fun part away.The authors use the panel-by-panel presentation style and humorous asides of cartoons as their primary mode of presentation.This works surprisingly well.It makes readers--particularly those intimidated by statistics--comfortable and ready to just read the panels.An instructionally useful side effect is the repeated use of graphical rather than textual definitions of statistical concepts.The tongue-in-cheek humor reinforces the relaxing experience of reading cartoons and eases the learning experience.

    I have never required this book as a text for a statistics class.But I have listed it as an optional text and I have loaned it to a student or two.It is good therapy for those afraid of their first statistics class.And it's a fun read for those who have already passed this hurdle.

    I used this book a lot during the past school year.I taught statistics for the first time and needed some extra help.This book was wonderful.It has great examples and easy explanations for various topics.I recommended this book to my students.Many bought the book as well to help prepare them with the Advanced Placement test.Thanks for such a good book.

    This book does cover all the topics necessary for the AP Stats exam.It provides easy and through examples and questions at the end, with allt he answeres explained.Its really good for the class too because it review important concepts and if u dont get something, then just look into this book and it should give u the answere.Its practice questions are close to the actual exam.THe book also will refresh your memeory of any topic and gives you tips on not falling into ETS traps.

    Although I have yet to take the AP Statistics exam, this book has certainly helped me in class. Our textbook (and our teacher) don't really do a thorough job in explaining the concepts. Often, before tests, I will look up a section in this book and learn how to do it from Cliffs!

    There are a lot of AP Stat books out there, but they all cover a different assortment of material. Although I cannot guarentee that this is the material one needs for the exam, I know that it explains it THOROUGHLY. They have plenty of example problems that are worked out in ways so that you can follow along each step. I find the example problems and questions the most helpful part of the book.     This an excellent resource for those who have had statistics and just need a guide on commands and regression techniques. It is the best book of the 3 different supplemental Stata books I purchased during my time in graduate school.

    This is by far the best STATA manual you could ever find. It is easy to use,has many helpful examples, and you could pretty much find solutions for any programming issue you need by using this book. Buy it and you won't regret it. Seriously, most books on the market do not even come close to how good this book is. I recommended it to several of my graduate students colleagues and everyone loved it and bought it.

    I thought this a remarkably clear and well written introduction to probability. I've tried to teach myself some probability and statistics over the years with a number of books, but this is the first that really presented the topic in an enjoyable and easily digestible manor. This is not a super formal math text,but all the ideas presented are backed up with nice proofs and arguments.

    My background is in physics,and certainly having a reasonable math background smooths the way.

    Unfortunately this book severely lacks step by step examples and makes many assumptions about what the reader does and does not know. I know calculus but most of the steps in the example problems are skipped over. Each chapter is divided into four or five sections but each chapter is only around ten pages long. This means that an entire section of knowledge is crammed into two pages. Add in that half of a page is usually used for a picture and you end up with a book full of theorems but lacking in substance. These aren't even formulas per say but instead are chapters filled with starting points. To elaborate about how bad this book is; I bought a study guide which has more full detailed step-by-step answers than this book. In fact the "full answers" in the back generally consist of one sentence answers but there are no graphs or step-by-step guidance.

    We used this book in our Introduction to Probability course at Georgia Tech. This book is written in a not-so-easy to understand matter and is good for someone that has a strong background in math. A few of my friends doing their Ph.D were helping me with this course and they also found this book hard to understand as well. If you read the text you're still gonna have such a hard time doing the exercises because it doesn't explain everything smoothly. I searched through the internet to find a solution manual for this book and simply they don't have it. You only get the solution if you get the teacher version. The book is written and published in Netherlands and it doesn't have any online resource for students. If you have to buy this book for your class make sure you get "Schaum's Outline of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Processes" or a similar book for extra help, otherwise you'll regret like I do.

    I have a strong general background in math, but not in probability and statistics.I use this book for self-study, and I find that it fits that purpose excellently.There are plenty of examples, and problems are adjusted so that they focus more on principles and understanding rather than on grunt-work calculations.

    My main objection, and the reason for giving it 4 stars, is English language.I am not a native English speaker, and it's obvious that none of the authors is either.Even worse, I encounter at least one misleading, or hard to understand sentence per chapter (mostly among problems).The book most definitely needs proofreading and language corrections!

    This book reads easily because it gives many concrete examples and uses a tutorial approach to teaching. However, you still need to know some math! You don't need a math degree. A good first course in calculus covering derivatives and integrals, including logs and exponentials, and some introductory combinatorics (basic knowledge of sets, permutations and combinations) is enough. Any sophomore or, at the latest, junior majoring in engineering or hard science has the prerequisites.

    An understanding of probability is necessary for understanding statistics, so the first half of this book is probability. Without probability, statistics becomes something like "here are some facts, trust me, now here are some formulas, recipes and tables and you will learn when to use each one". For many people this may be enough, especially if they just need to get something done. But if you want to know why hypothesis testing is done the way it is and how it works, buy this book. For example, many statistics books just assume a normal distribution for sampling and the only thing you need to learn is when to use a one-tailed or two-tailed test and which formula to use. This is valid when working with sufficiently large populations or samples. In contrast, the worked example in this book does not use a normal distribution and it walks you through the reasoning and calculation. The reasoning is applicable to any population and distribution. When you change to a normal distribution the principles remain the same, only the formulas change. You learn the principles.

    Now to the book's style. This is a tutorial style book that teaches using examples. It doesn't skip many steps and can feel somewhat chatty. It repeats simple calculations along the way so you don't have to page back and find where that number was calculated. This keeps the flow going. Learning by example is actually a good way to learn if you are new to the material. Some however, may not like this style, so read some online first before buying. If you already have probability under your belt and are up on your math then you may find this book slow going. This book is aimed at scientists and engineers, so if you are looking for a rigorous math book with proofs, look elsewhere.

    Summary: If you've got the prerequisites then this is a great book for self teaching at a good price. If you are lacking in math and you need to do statistics now, then pick up a "cookbook" statistics book and come back later when you have the math background. If you know your stuff and need a reference, look elsewhere. ... Read more

    I got this book to help me prepare for the CQE. This is book is a good reference for the CQE and also it helped me know more on DOE.

    First: the BOOK is very well written. Box is an true expert on his field, and a good writer. How well his style and pedagogic layout 'connects' with you will depend on your humour (if any), whether you will use it for study or reference, and your background (specifically this book is written with an eye to manufacturing industry, not just chemo/bio disciplines).

    Second: the TOPIC of experiment design (and strategy) is extremely useful to understand. If you are involved in industrial experiments (as opposed to data analysis) this is far more useful than the statistics you learned at university.

    In my opinion the 'how' (the various design types, tests, plots etc) is actually secondary, the most useful is to understand *why* and *when* to design experiments. The authors do a good job here too, it's possible to get the essentials without getting bogged down in the statistics.

    Conclusion: if you want a solid book on this topic (and you do!), then I recommend this one.

    I am a mathematical statistician and I appreciate and understand modern books on experimental designs such as the book by Wu and Hamada.However, the first edition of this book became an immediate classic because George Box is a genius and is from a rare breed of statisticians who have strong theoretical and practical experience in statistical methods and in this case statistical design.Stu Hunter and Bill Hunter are two other statisticians with strong applied backgrounds in engineering and other applications of experimental design.Before you can appreciate the theory you need to understand the theory.The first edition of this book presented the concepts beautifully.This was a great help to me as I had learned the theory and the construction of factorial designs, fractional factorial designs and incomplete block designs, but never had a clear understanding of when to use them until I read this book.Other important simple designs of great practical importance are also covered extremely well.

    I wrote a review of the first edition of this text.Justin Hunter appreciated it so much that he wrote a very touching email to me on this and he was very kind to send me a complimentary copy of the second edition.Justin is the son of Bill Hunter.Unfortunately Bill past away before this second edition was conceived.I believe it was partly as a tribute to Bill that George Box and Stu Hunter put together this revised edition.The spirit and philosophy of the first edition has been maintained and since the first edition had appear way back in 1978 the production of an updated edition is welcome and way over due.

    Please read the book review by Justin Hunter.He is very upfront about his bias for his father but what he writes is honest and comes from an interesting and unique perspective.

    Superb!If you are involved, in any way, with science or engineering, you need this book on your shelf (after you have carefully read it twice).My only complaint is that I found out about it circuitously reading Prof. Box's "Improving Almost Anything"; I was curious what the often cited BHH reference was.I think someone should have a word with the publisher's marketing department; if we don't know about it, how are we supposed to buy it?

    I have found it very difficult to identify a good book on study design for the biomedical industry as most are too focused on engineering/manufacturing applications.Though this book does discuss many different study designs and their theoretical underpinnings well, it does not do a very good job of explaining the issues of sample size and power.These issues are critical to designing studies in biologic settings.

    If one is planning experiments on animals, it is mandatory to design studies that minimize the number of animals required to answer the scientific question at hand--given pre-specified levels of statistical power and effect size.Similarly, when experiments are conducted on humans (i.e. clinical trials) it is important to include enough patients so that adequate precision is obtained.I wish this book discussed better how to find the appropriate number of replications required to optimize experimental conclusions (like the interactions terms in a factorial experiment, for instance). ...
