I dug this book out thanks to Amazon's used book resource.It stands apart from many books on quantum mechanics because of its incredible detail in mathematical demonstration.If you are interested in the gory details of Dirac's spinor vectors and operator matrices, then this is where you'll see no glossing over of the details.

The only negative worth mentioning are the problems at the end of each chapter.Many of these problems are so general and deep that they beg another chapter just to answer them!It is clear that the author has very high expectations of his students.

This book has a Feynmanesque quality.John Eisele, like Richard Feynman, likes to discuss in detail the failures of some physical theories.The Klein-Gordon is a good example where he compares experimental and theoretical results.It is very instructive for me to understand quantitatively how close near miss ideas come to hitting the target.

If you see a used copy pop up and want to see algebraic details, this book is for you to better understand the "devil in the details" of quantum mechanics! ... Read more

Professor Jones, renowned author of numerous scientific papers on this topic and the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Electrostatics, presents us with the monograph on the interaction of the electric or magnetic fieldwith non-charged small, but nevertheless macroscopic particles. The forceor torque exerted on particles by the field can result in migratorymovement in a non-homogeneous field (dielectrophoresis), rotation ofparticles in a rotating electric field, orientational change ofnon-spherical particles, and formation of aggregates of particles known aspearl chains. The tome is a collection of important results in this field,many of them are direct results of Professor Jones and hiscoworkers.

Throughout the book, only classical electrostatics andmagnetostatics are employed, i.e. particles are modelled as bodies andshells with given (complex) dielectric permittivity (magnetic permeabilityin the magnetostatic case), immersed in a homogeneous medium with differentelectric (or magnetic) properties. This is not a particular drawback, sincethere is an abundance of literature catering for readers interested inmezzoscopic phenomena.

It is clear that Professor Jones' intention wasto make the book accessible not only to physicists, but first and foremostto the intended audience of engineers and scienctists from differentbranches of science. Thus, for instance, Chapter 2 introduces the effectivemoment model, which is used throughout the book rather than mathematicallymore complex the Maxwell tensor formalism. Even though the book is ascientific monograph, mathematics used as a rule does not exceed thestandard repertoire of any textbook on electromagnetism, such as multipolarexpansion. In addition, experimental scientists will probably appreciatenumerous results presented as simple formulas, suitable for comparing withexperimentally obtained values.

Investigation of the interaction ofelectric and magnetic field with particles is gaining importance, inparticular in biotechnology. As standard textbooks on electromagnetismrarely proceed beyond Clausius-Mossotti law, it is difficult for someonenew to this field to find where to start. Low Reynolds Number Hydrodynamics by Happel and Brenner is one of the most useful texts ever written (in the field of the same name), and is essential reading for everyone working in this area. This includes researchers studying motion of colloidal particles say during sedimentation or through NEMS devices, cell motility and motion of bacteria, microfluidics, microrheology of complex fluids, etc. The book first introduces the required concepts of Fluid Mechanics, and proceeds to detail the theorems and derivations of how Navier Stokes equation is simplified into creeping flow equations, the hydrodynamics ofsingle particles of different shapes and sizes moving in unbounded fluid, the hydrodynamic interaction during motion of assembly of particles, the all effect and ends with a discussion of viscosity of particulate media.

The book contains a wealth of knowledge regarding the hydrodynamics of particulate media, and progressively introduces the effect on dynamics of the particles. It is very instrustive in the sense, that first the single particle dynamics is discussed. Then the effects of shapes and sizes are detailed. Next level of complexity is built in by looking at interaction between two spherical particles moving through a fluid. Then anisotropic bodies are discussed. The effect of walls, boundaries and multi-particles comes in next. A basic understanding of Fluid Mechanics (say of the order of Transport Phenomenon by Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot) is enough to get one started on discovering the beautiful word of Low Re Hydrodynamics.

However, the text was written and revised two-three decades back, and hence is a bit dated with respect to the range of applications covered and the cited references. There are several texts available to supplement this one say for looking at cell motility or colloidal dynamics or sedimentation of particles, etc. Also effects of Brownian Motion are excluded, which require studying additional texts. Nevertheless, the book is an exceedingly useful reference (too pricey to own) and will be useful for all the above mentioned fields (and for pedagogic reasons)! ... Read more

This book would probably be good if you already knew the material...the authors' explanations are often extremely poor. They skip many steps in derivations using phrases like the dreaded "it can be seen that" when the logical steps involved are not at all obvious, and often try to introduce subjects using excessively formal mathematical notation that bogs down the physical insight. Sometimes their examples are decent, but this is the exception rather than the rule. If you have a bad teacher for your upper level classical mechanics course and are forced to rely on your textbook for self study and this is the one you're stuck with, you will be in trouble.

This book is for a course I'm taking in spring.The textbook promises a great semester.The layout is very clean, the many examples are clearly set off from the rest of the text, the font is easy on the eyes, and figures are well labeled and explained in the text.

1-0 out of 5 stars We probably need a new area of physics to explain how a book can be so bad
Usually a physics book will have some redeeming qualities. Not this one. The examples are often convoluted and the topic discussions are anything but clear. Even if you're an A student, this book will leave you scratching your head. Some parts just skip over necessary detail when building to a conclusion. Other parts give the detail but in such a way that you have to read it over and over. The first law of of texts should match the Hippocratic oath - do no harm. This book does just that.

If you have some spare money, get a used copy of Taylor's mechanics book. It is by far one of the best written. It may save your semester. And just hope to heck that a bad book was forced upon your good teacher.Bad book + bad teacher = very bad physics learning.If you just need to muddle through for a passing grade, you may be ok. If this is your major or if you need to learn mechanics thoroughly, be careful. Bottom line, this book won't help and may even hurt your efforts.

This is an excellent mechanics book for the intermediate step between introductory mechanics like Haliday and Resnick or Young and advanced mechanics like Goldstein. It introduces mechanics with an excellent chapter, which is extremely useful, on matrices, vectors, coordinate systems. The book is excellent for self study as it follows a line of reasoning and the chapters are arranged in a logical order. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics is well discussed. Finally there are a lot of exercises for practice

This is a very solid introduction to classical mechanics.Starting from a simple review of Newtonian Mechanics, it covers many of the more advanced topics which would become useful in future studies: Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, rigid body problems, center of mass formulations, vibrations and waves, central force problems including planetary motions, and a little introduction to special relativity.The general coverage is solid, and the book is easy to follow.In particular, the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian sections are probably the easist to read amongst alternatives.However, it does suffer from a few things: (a) pages of detailed calculations which are usually not particularly elegant, or illuminating, I have seen some of the problems get much more elegant mathematical treatment elsewhere, (b) some of the links with other branches of physics could be a little more illuminating, such as the Hamiltonian section could mention some applications in optics which will enhance understanding.Overall, a good book to learn classical mechanics from. ...
