Good beginner figure painting book
If you like modeling 1/35th or 1/48th scale German armor and have wanted to add figures, this book is for you.The core of the text covers painting WWII panzer crewmen in miniature using enamels and oils and only lightly touches on conversions and scupting.

The basic uniforms covered include:
Panzer Black (The most common uniform worn)
Afrika Korp (also known as Tropical uniform)
Reed Green Denim (introduced in 1942)

The focus of the work is the use of shading and hilighting techniques with enamel paints to create a realistic looking uniform in miniature.The author begins with the Panzer Black uniform which is very easy and a great place to start for a beginner.The author then moves on to AfrikaKorp and Reed Green Denim uniforms which are not really much harder.

The book has further sections on painting faces, sculpting figures and weathering uniforms.The face painting section is very good but requires a commitment to the use of artists oils.Using artist oils is a little tricky and more advice there would have been nice.However, face painting with oils, once mastered, will deliver a great result.The section on sculpting is really too brief and was the least useful to me.

Overall this is a grood book for anyone struggling to start adding figures to their German armor models.

Niche Modelling
There appears to be a recent proliferation of modelling books on niche branches of the German Army from this publisher. I can understand specific modelling manuals for a type of tank, airplane and how-to procedures for modelling the different types and marks. What I can't understand is why is there a need to have niche concepts in modelling the Germanic WWII figure? There is only one mark/type (aryan, SS, waffen) that I am aware of and the various uniform details can be gleaned from numerous books on the subject.
This book covers only slight modifications, if any, of the numerous commercially available 1/35 scale resin and plastic figures with head swaps. Why a manual is required to do these simple modifications escapes me.

Disappointed
Although weell photographed and documented, I was let down by this volume in the Osprey Modelling series.Maybe if the publisher had named it "Painting Panzer Crewmen of the Heer" I wouldn't be as disappointed.To it's credit, the book does go into very good detail concerning painting Panzer crewmen, but I think that the concept of modeling goes a bit farther than just painting.Very little of this book deals with topics like figure conversions, changing facial expressions, and scratchbuilding figures.A good reference, but I think that Osprey could have done a bit better. ... Supperb modelling Effort
This book is an exception production. Subject choice is great and the painting techniques of Pat Johnston make this book a really must have. The winter finish made on his ARRV is perheaps the best I remember published.

It is frankly amazing that while the subjects are the Chally 1 and 2, the tech shown is perfectly inspiring for other modelling subjects - like multi tone camo, desert finishes and winter finishes.

Scratch builders will also find a special place inside this book and here Graeme Davidson words are really inspiring - if you can build a box, 80% of the job is done. A very friendly aproach with very high standard results.

Inspiring book but needs revision and to cater towards more novice modellers
Osprey's 'Modelling the Messerschmitt Me 262' is a great source of inspiration if you are planning on building a Me 262 kit - especially in 1:48 scale as there are many examples of the Tamiya and Dragon kits. There are many expertly constructed models, however nothing really aimed towards the basic/novice builder. The prevalence of 1:48 scale Me-262s built using the 'Cutting Edge' after market products, noticeably the adding of the leading edge slats to the Tamiya kit, is annoying should the modeller want to pursue a similar path. It is my understanding that 'Cutting Edge Modelworks' no longer exists as a company. Subsequent after market companies such as Verlinden now produce an enhancement kits and these should perhaps be explored in more detail. Still worthwhile for the various painting techniques and attention to small details.

Vanilla "Osprey Modelling
Just your regular Osprey Modelling volume - something for everyone, every scale, every skill, great descriptions, brilliant techniques and great pictures. I'll only glve it 4 stars though, because the book should be (or have been) expanded, on the lines of the "Modelling the P-47"'s supplementary PDF, with an article on the not-so-brand-new 1/32 Trumpeter kit - it's sorely missed.

A very nice and concise Introduction
This is an excellent book. It offers a concise yet comprehensive view molecular modelling, and explains all the theory in a very lucid way. I will gladly recommend this book to anyone. However, as another reviewer pointed out, the math is fairly advanced. Mathematically challenged biologists or chemists will find this book very difficult, if not outright impossible despite the mathematical ad-memoire included as an appendix.

Fantastic Overview of a Very Complex Subject
I found this book to be really informative.I was looking for something to help decipher the scientific literature around molecular dynamics and protein folding and this book fit the bill perfectly.

The only other comment I have is that the 'for beginners' part of the title may be a little misleading.Someone approaching this book should have a backround in organic chemistry, physics, and some solid math (linear algebra and multivariate calculus) to really enjoy it. ... Read more

Review of O'Kane's Modeling Credit Derivatives
The author's(O'Kane) exposition of the subject matter is lucid and very well structured.
There is a good balance between theory and the practical aspects in the subject matter.
Usually, there is a divergence between theory and practice, but O'Kane addresses these divergences well i.e. MTM,risk management & hedging of CDS contracts (and its variations)
O'Kane successully simplifies the complex into the simple with clear, concise language in a structured, logical manner without bombarding the reader with complicated mathematical proof/ambiguous logical arguments i.e. why a one-factor latent variable model is insufficient to model the correlation structure of an n-name portfolio etc..
I believe the dilligent reader can eventually develop his/her own intuition and can understand the logic behind the structure of the equations

Before graduating to the current literature of credit derivatives, this book provides a very strong foundation to build upon.

Personally, I prefer O'Kane's pedagogical style/treatment of the subject matter (credit derivatives) over Hull/White's treatment in their classic "Options, Futures and Other Derivatives"
This book has given me a better, clearer and more structured understanding of credit derivatives in general.
Hopefully O'Kane can write a book along similar lines for the other asset classes ie interest rate/fx.

The best all around book on credit derivatives so far
The book strikes a perfect balance between theory and practice, and is the most comprehensive guide of the field written so far. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to get understanding of the credit products for trading or modeling.

This is the most complete and mathmatically rigorous treatment of any of the dozens of books out there on credit derivatives.The math is graduate level, but doesn't inhibit a determined read for the underlying concepts.Only quibble is that the author sometimes gets lost in the academic treatment of various correlation models and loses a reader more focused on practical market applications.Overall, this should be required reading for anyone interested in credit derivatives. ... M4 (76mm) Sherman Medium Tank review
Very helpful manual for the advanced modeler.I am not an advanced modeler but even I found the book helpful.So it is suitable for all skill levels.

Zaloga Has Two Excellent Sherman Modeling Books, actually...
Steve Zaloga is a superb historian of US and Soviet military equipment, and a very capable model builder, as well as an extremely talented writer, so you really cannot go wrong with any title he has written. Where Amazon has gone wrong is that they have confused his two books on "Modelling the US Army M4 Sherman Tank" as different editions of the same book. If you are looking at the page for the late 76 mm variants, click on the "paperback" edition link, you'll find the companion volume, which deals with building the early variants of the Sherman family with the 75 mm gun. The second volume deals with the later, 76 mm gun versions.
Since space is at a premium in these little booklets, the author just addresses variants actually used by US Army units (some types, like the M4A4, and late M4A2 versions were used mainly by Allied troops). There are new 1/35th scale Sherman kits released almost every month, now, but the books are still a useful overview on how to improve the many older kits on the market. He points up some basic improvements needed to make the available kits from Tamiya and DML/Dragon accurate (which are also applicable to other maker's versions, like Italeri and Academy), and includes very helpful "in progress" photos to illustrate the fixes. He also shows the novice how to deal with the individual link tracks included in some older Dragon Sherman kits, which are challenging to assemble unless you build a simple jig, as demonstrated in the book (newer Dragon releases offer excellent soft plastic track, which actually looks better than the single link type, and is much less arduous to install). The tanks are expertly painted and weathered using simple and effective techniques, and since Zaloga likes to display completed models in small vignettes, you get some nice tips on producing simple but effective dioramas, as well.

For advanced Modelers
This book is really geared for advanced modelers. It does have some nice color photos including some beautiful models by the author. But the modeling tips are really more advanced and are a bit beyond my current abilities. Maybe someday I'll be able to put this to better use. ... Read more

Incomplete
This book is at its best when explaining the theory.Jarrow provides lots of very explicit examples that really help to illuminate the ideas.Unfortunately, the reader is left to fend for himself when it comes to implementing the theory.The author simply breezes over how to estimate and calibrate these models.There is a rich--but abstruse--literature on how to apply HJM models.This book would be greatly improved if it covered this aspect of the topic with the same care and detail as is devoted to the theoretical segment of the book.

Excellent!
The book is very good, unquestionably. It provides you with a deep understanding of interest rate models and risk management. Mind you, you need to know the basics of bonds and fixed income contongent claims, before you try this book. The examples are apt, and explanations are succint, and easily understood. The mathematics involved can be mastered easily, and no arcane stuff (like measure-theoretic probability etc.) are used. So, the book will be accessible to MBA students too. This book has helped me understand the subject very well.

At last a real well written Book on Interest Rate Modeling!
This book will definitely replace all the books on interest rate modeling- Brigo Murcurio etc. The book starts at an elementary level, explains every details of the concept, and then develop the subject matter one needs to know to be a pro in interest rate modeling. Even the simple concepts like duration, convexity are clearly explained that many other books take pages, and even then not very clear. Buy it, Read it! After all you will be learning from a master! The clarity and the writing style are simply great! Good job Prof. Jarrow!

For use only by advanced students
This book is less of a mathematics text than it is a refined collection of lecture notes. The authors, Anthony and Biggs, both LSE professors, present the material in as few words as possible. They have omitted the depth of explanation which users of modern college textbooks have come to expect. Indeed, they get right to the point with few illustrations, few examples and few exercises for students to work (and no solutions with which to compare).

Without a solid (and recent) background in higher algebra and calculus and a good understanding of basic economics concepts, students will find this book to be challenging. Advanced economics students, on the other hand, will find it to be a handy reference.

One can't help but think that this volume was born out of necessity: a textbook written by an educator because no other suitable text yet exists. Think of Paul Samuelson's first edition of 'Economics' in 1948. (In fact, Anthony's and Bigg's book bears a striking resemblance in style to Samuelson's original. An ode, perhaps?) Let's hope that this book, like Samuelson's original, evolves into a more comprehensive volume.

Timeless
Without a doubt, this is a timeless masterpiece that every business major should have. I used it as the required text in a freshman calculus class in a BBA program, along with some vanilla calculus supplemental material.Works perfectly for that, and while a little over the head of many students at that level, it gives them one book that they can keep forever, and look back on, someday hopefully seeing all the beauty of it.

Great text but....
I found this text an essential undergrad economics book. Economics is very quantitative in practice and therefore, should be well understood.If your math background is slightly weaker (whether undergrad or grad), this book eases you into the material.There are numerous mathematical errors in this book though, so beware!Maybe it is good practice to be able to cite the errors but you can not rely on each solution, unfortunately.

Mathematical modelling is an essential tool in present-day ecological research. Yet for many ecologists it is still problematic to apply modelling in their research. In our experience, the major problem is at the conceptual level: proper understanding of what a model is, how ecological relations can be translated consistently into mathematical equations, how models are solved, steady states calculated and interpreted. Many textbooks jump over these conceptual hurdles to dive into detailed formulations or the mathematics of solution. This book attempts to fill that gap. It introduces essential concepts for mathematical modelling, explains the mathematics behind the methods, and helps readers to implement models and obtain hands-on experience. Throughout the book, emphasis is laid on how to translate ecological questions into interpretable models in a practical way.

You can get better
I have this book on econometrics together with other books. The others are far more understandable because more graphs and clearer formulas' explanations are given.

Main Focus on cointegration + use of PcGive & G@RCH
This book is mainly focused on cointegration(the title is quite misleading). The treatment is nice and NOT superficial. Every chapter deals (in)directly with cointegration, except the last one on GARCH models. There is even a chapter on panel data models and cointegration. Do NOT buy the book to get an extensive treatment of "time series modelling and forecasting" techniques. This book is useful if you need to apply cointegration in your work. This book should not be given to students as an introductory book on "time-series modelling and forecasting". Chris Brooks' Introductory Econometrics for Finance is much better for that purpose. Finally, a nice feature of the book is the use of PcGive and G@ARCH Ox packages.

The fundamental premise of this monograph is that transparent synthetic materials with geotechnical properties similar to those of natural soils can be used to study 3D deformation and flow problems in natural soils. Transparent soils can be made by matching the refractive index of synthetic soil materials and the pore fluid. This monographs presents the geotechnical behaviour of several families of transparent soils that can be combined to meet model-test requirements, in terms of strength, deformation, or permeability.

"Modelling with Transparent Soils" demonstrates how an optical system consisting of a laser light, a CCD camera, a frame grabber, and a PC can be used to measure spatial deformations in transparent soil models non-intrusively. Transparent soil models are sliced optically using a laser light sheet. A distinctive speckle pattern is generated by the interaction of the laser light and transparent soil. A 2D deformation field is obtained from two speckle images by using an image processing technique named adaptive cross-correlation, which is an advanced form of the digital image cross-correlation (DIC) algorithm that utilizes both window sizing and window shifting methods. The monograph demonstrates that comparison of 2D deformation fields between transparent soil and natural soil showed that the results were comparable in almost every aspect. Three dimensional fields can be produced by combining multiple 2D fields in Matlab.

Multiphase flow and surfactant flushing tests were also simulated using a layered transparent soil systems and several contaminants.  The developed technology allows for visualizing the contamination concentration and evaluating the performance of remediation  technologies in bench scale model tests.

Self improving you hobby abilities
Much like their other modelling books, it covers a veritiy of projects in a step by step instruction. One building on the next until you can design and then create your own World War 2 figurine diaramas.

Great book
This book covers some dramatic issues regarding figure modelling and Waffen SS camo painting, it is important to have some basic knowledge regarding this issues.

Tan makes figure convertion look like a walk in the park, well its not. He has some natural and amazing skill for convertions, so dont try to replicate what you see in the first run, study the sbs and practice, practice and practice some more, this book will provide a really good reference on how-to.

Painting Waffen SS camo is considered almost a sin, it aint pretty to deal with all those confusing patterns, my advise: Research and study before smelling those trusty Vallejos (my brand of choice), take your time and get used to them (the patterns), buy a good reference book like Waffen-SS Uniforms In Color Photographs: Europa Militaria Series #6 (Europa Militaria), this two books work together like a charm.

Regarding painting techniques, Tan breaks it down really nice, from a sbs face painting to uniforms, some terrain and weathering armor tips, BUT, do your homework and you will realize that pro-painted figures are a sum of many different techniques. Again dont do and compare, just practice your way up, one step at a time. I really liked how he shows the early stages of a camo to its final touches, keep in mind that some techniques like glazing, feathering, etc, are not depicted here.

Over all a really good book that will help improve your figure painting skills.

Great Book for All levels
There is always something new to learn from this book. Even you are an expert figure modeller, there are still new tips that can be learnt. The best part of this book is the painting of the Waffen SS Camo. Serious modellershould consider this book.

Excellent work on a difficult subject
If you are having a hard time painting realistic 1/35th scale Waffen SS camo patterns on your figures, this book is for you.The author provides an easy to follow guide to painting several patterns using acrylic paint (Vallejo brand).It also incorporates; techniques for super detailing battle field dress, equipment, major figure modifications, full sculpts and groundwork.There is quite a bit of information provided using numerous pictures of the work progressing.

The best part for me was the breakdown of each camo pattern with specific color mixes and how to apply the colors.These are challenging patterns to reproduce in this scale.The following patterns are explained
Plane Tree Pattern
Dot/Pea Pattern
Italian Pattern
Oak-Leaf Pattern - Spring
Oak- Leaf Pattern - Autumn

If you are serious about improving in this specific area I would highly recommend this book.

Should be titled "How to sculpt figures that happen to be SS"
If you are looking for a book with some history and background to the SS and their uniforms, with great "how-to" write-ups on painting them, this ain't the book. If you are looking for a general "how-to" manual on sculpting custom figures, this is a pretty fair account of that endeavor. There's a black mark on the side of my book, and that's the only minor flaw.

Excellent introduction
I read this book to learn the basics of model checking, and I found it an excellent introduction. Logic can be a dry and intimidating subject but this text presents the theory in an engaging style. Concepts are always introduced with concrete examples to explain them and to show how they should be used to reason about software. Thisbook is essentially theoretical, there is no presentation of real world uses of the methods.

a reader
In my opinion (I refer to the II edition)the logic treatment is fairly complete for acomputer science student (anyway it's missing the treatment of Prolog and the relevant logic).This book is also an excellent introduction to Model Checking of Clarke.

Not for undergrads, advanced textbook
The coverage of this book is quite good for what concerns logic in computer science. However, using it as an introduction on logic for computer scientists is probably ambitious because the explanations are rather complicated for undergraduates. A first course on logic and another on AI would not hurt before getting into this one. Too many notions of computer science (syntax and semantics of programming languages, complexity) are needed to fully understand some topics, hence it is better that you already have a broad view of all aspects of computer science before reading this one. As an advanced course textbook to formal techniques in computer sciente on the other hand, this one would do the job.

It's a decent book
A lot of good material is covered and in a relatively tight fashion. The presentation of logic is well done, but when getting into the BDDs, the explanations get a little complicated and I personally had to read it over several times before I could make sure I understood what was going on. This book also does not have anything on symmetry, so if that's what you're looking for, there are better books out there. However, this book can hold its own and I recommend it to anyone interested in learning the basics of model checking provided they can take handle some of the heavy duty reading. ... Read more
