Product Description
This book emphasizes the use of algebraic methods and techniques in the study of operators and their applications. It includes carefully selected articles aimed at bridging different but related areas of mathematics which have only recently displayed unexpected interconnections, as well as new and exciting cross-fertilizations. For the reader's convenience, the articles have been grouped into chapters on single operators and applications, nonselfadjoint algebras, C*-algebras, von Neumann algebras and subfactors, representation of groups and algebras on Hilbert space, and geometry and topology. This has been done in an effort to stress the complementarity between diversity of topics on one hand, and unity of ideas on the other. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is an introduction to convolution operators with matrix-valued almost periodic or semi-almost periodic symbols.

The basic tools for the treatment of the operators are Wiener-Hopf factorization and almost periodic factorization. These factorizations are systematically investigated and explicitly constructed for interesting concrete classes of matrix functions. The material covered by the book ranges from classical results through a first comprehensive presentation of the core of the theory of almost periodic factorization up to the latest achievements, such as the construction of factorizations by means of the Portuguese transformation and the solution of corona theorems. The book is addressed to a wide audience in the mathematical and engineering sciences. It is accessible to readers with basic knowledge in functional, real, complex, and harmonic analysis, and it is of interest to everyone who has to deal with the factorization of operators or matrix functions ... Product Description
The purpose of this publication is to present, in one book, various approaches to analytic problems that arise in the context of singular spaces. It is based on the workshop ''Approaches to Singular Analysis'' which was held at the Humboldt University Berlin in April 1999.

The book contains articles by workshop participants as well as invited contributions. The former are expanded versions of talks given at the workshop; they offer introductions to various pseudodifferential calculi and discussions of relations between them. In addition, a limited number of invited papers from mathematicians who have made significant contributions to this field are included. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

The book deals with nonlocal elliptic differential operators. These are operators whose coefficients involve shifts generated by diffeomorphisms of the manifold on which the operators are defined. The main goal of the study is to relate analytical invariants (in particular, the index) of such operators to topological invariants of the manifold itself. This problem can be solved by modern methods of noncommutative geometry. To make the book self-contained, the authors have included necessary geometric material (C*-algebras and their K-theory, cyclic homology, etc.).

Product Description
This book is devoted primarily to topics in interpolation for scalar, matrix and operator valued functions. About half the papers are based on lectures which were delivered at a conference held at Leipzig University in August 1994 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Petrovich Potapov. The volume also contains the English translation of several important papers relatively unknown in the West, two expository papers written especially for this volume, and historical material based on reminiscences of former colleagues, students and associates of V.P. Potapov. Numerous examples of interpolation problems of the Nevanlinna-Pick and Carathéodory-Fejér type are included as well as moment problems and problems of integral representation in assorted settings. The major themes cover applications of the Potapov method of fundamental matrix inequalities, multiplicative decompositions of J-inner matrix valued functions, the abstract interpolation problem, canonical systems of differential equations and interpolation in spaces with an indefinite metric. This book should appeal to a wide range of readers: mathematicians specializing in pure and applied mathematics and engineers who work in systems theory and control. The book will be of use to graduate students and mathematicians interested in functional analysis. ... Read more

Product Description
Nobel prize winner Ilya Prigogine writes in his preface: "Irreversibility is a challenge to mathematics...[which] leads to generalized functions and to an extension of spectral analysis beyond the conventional Hilbert space theory." Meeting this challenge required new mathematical formulations-obstacles met and largely overcome thanks primarily to the contributors to this volume." This compilation of works grew out of material presented at the "Hyperfunctions, Operator Theory and Dynamical Systems" symposium at the International Solvay Institutes for Physics and Chemistry in 1997. The result is a coherently organized collective work that moves from general, widely applicable mathematical methods to ever more specialized physical applications. Presented in two sections, part one describes Generalized Functions and Operator Theory, part two addresses Operator Theory and Dynamical Systems. The interplay between mathematics and physics is now more necessary than ever-and more difficult than ever, given the increasing complexity of theories and methods. Here the topics include: ... Product Description
This book offers a presentation of some new trends in operator theory and operator algebras, with a view to their applications. It consists of separate papers written by some of the leading practitioners in the field. The content is put together by the three editors in a way that should help students and working mathematicians in other parts of the mathematical sciences gain insight into an important part of modern mathematics and its applications. While different specialist authors are outlining new results in this book, the presentations have been made user friendly with the aid of tutorial material. In fact, each paper contains three things: a friendly introduction with motivation, tutorial material, and new research. The authors have strived to make their results relevant to the rest of mathematics. A list of topics discussed in the book includes wavelets, frames and their applications, quantum dynamics, multivariable operator theory, $C^*$-algebras, and von Neumann algebras. Some longer papers present recent advances on particular, long-standing problems such as extensions and dilations, the Kadison-Singer conjecture, and diagonals of self-adjoint operators. ... Product Description
The need to study holomorphic mappings in infinite dimensional spaces, in all likelihood, arose for the first time in connection with the development of nonlinear analysis. A systematic study of integral equations with an analytic nonlinear part was started at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries by A. Liapunov, E. Schmidt, A. Nekrasov and others. Their research work was directed towards the theory of nonlinear waves and used mainly the undetermined coefficients and the majorant power series methods, which subsequently have been refined and developed. Parallel with these achievements, the theory of functions of one or several complex variables was gradually enriched with more significant and subtle results. The present book is a first step towards establishing a bridge between nonlinear analysis, nonlinear operator equations and the theory of holomorphic mappings on Banach spaces. The work concludes with a brief exposition of the theory of spaces with indefinite metrics, and some relevant applications of the holomorphic mappings theory in this setting. In order to make this book accessible not only to specialists but also to students and engineers, the authors give a complete account of definitions and proofs, and also present relevant prerequisites from functional analysis and topology. Contents: Preliminaries • Differential calculus in normed spaces • Integration in normed spaces • Holomorphic (analytic) operators and vector-functions on complex Banach spaces • Linear operators • Nonlinear equations with differentiable operators • Nonlinear equations with holomorphic operators • Banach manifolds • Non-regular solutions of nonlinear equations • Operators on spaces with indefinite metric • References • List of Symbols • Subject Index ...
