Product Description
The fundamental property of compact spaces---that continuous functions defined on compact spaces are bounded---served as a motivation for E. Hewitt to introduce the notion of a pseudocompact space. The class of pseudocompact spaces proved to be of fundamental importance in set-theoretic topology and its applications.

This clear and self-contained exposition offers a comprehensive treatment of the question, When does a group admit an introduction of a pseudocompact Hausdorff topology that makes group operations continuous? Equivalently, what is the algebraic structure of a pseudocompact Hausdorff group?

The authors have adopted a unifying approach that covers all known results and leads to new ones. Results in the book are free of any additional set-theoretic assumptions. ... Read more

Product Description
These notes provide a reasonably self-contained introductory survey of certain aspects of harmonic analysis on compact groups. The first part of the book seeks to give a brief account of integration theory on compact Hausdorff spaces. The second, larger part starts from the existence and essential uniqueness of an invariant integral on every compact Hausdorff group. Topics subsequently outlined include representations, the Peter-Weyl theory, positive definite functions, summability and convergence, spans of translates, closed ideals and invariant subspaces, spectral synthesis problems, the Hausdorff-Young theorem, and lacunarity. ... Product Description
This work develops a topological analogue of the classical Chern-Weil theory as a method for computing the characteristic classes of principal bundles whose structural group is not necessarily a Lie group, but only a cohomologically finite topological group. Substitutes for the tools of differential geometry, such as the connection and curvature forms, are taken from algebraic topology, using work of Adams, Brown, Eilenberg-Moore, Milgram, Milnor, and Stasheff. The result is a synthesis of the algebraic-topological and differential-geometric approaches to characteristic classes. In contrast to the first approach, specific cocycles are used, so as to highlight the influence of local geometry on global topology. In contrast to the second, calculations are carried out at the small scale rather than the infinitesimal; in fact, this work may be viewed as a systematic extension of the observation that curvature is the infinitesimal form of the defect in parallel translation around a rectangle. This book could be used as a text for an advanced graduate course in algebraic topology. ... Read more

Product Description
This book focuses on the algebraic-topological aspects of probability theory, leading to a wider and deeper understanding of basic theorems, such as those on the structure of continuous convolution semigroups and the corresponding processes with independent increments. The method applied within the setting of Banach spaces and of locally compact Abelian groups is that of the Fourier transform. This analytic tool along with the relevant parts of harmonic analysis makes it possible to study certain properties of stochastic processes in dependence of the algebraic-topological structure of their state spaces. Graduate students, lecturers and researchers may use the book as a primer in the theory of probability measures on groups and related structures. ... Read more

Product Description

Devoted to the theory of Lie algebras and algebraic groups, this book includes a large amount of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry so as to make it as self-contained as possible. The aim of the book is to assemble in a single volume the algebraic aspects of the theory, so as to present the foundations of the theory in characteristic zero. Detailed proofs are included, and some recent results are discussed in the final chapters.

Product Description
This book is a (post)graduate textbook on Lie groups and Lie algebras. Its aim is to give a broad introduction to the field with an emphasis on using differential-geometrical methods, in the spirit of Lie himself. The structure of compact Lie groups is analyzed in terms of the action of the group on itself by conjugation. The book culminates in the classification of the representations of compact Lie groups and in their realization as sections of holomorphic line bundles over flag manifolds. The relations with algebraic and analytic models are also discussed. A review of the required background material is provided in appendices. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Book on Lie Groups
I have read this book with great interest. It deals with the theory of Liegroups from the global point of view, not only the usual Lie algebraictreatment. Of particular originality is the theory of orbits for compactgroups, an issue with many applications such as the patterns of symmetrybreaking in elementary particle physics. I also particularly appreciatedthe chapter about the Borel-Weil theory of representations which does notseem to be available in textbooks. The style and breadth of the expositionwill certainly make it an instant classic, a perfect complement to the Liealgebra texts by Humphreys or Jacobson. I also appreciated the emphasis onthe differential geometric aspects of the subject. One regret is that theauthors did not delve into the orbit theory of complex Lie groups and thelink with geometric invariant theory. ... Read more

Product Description
This book presents a large amount of material, both classic and recent (on occasion, unpublished) about the relations of Algebra and Topology. It therefore belongs to the area called Topological Algebra. More specifically, the objects of the study are subtle and sometimes unexpected phenomena that occur when the continuity meets and properly feeds an algebraic operation. Such a combination gives rise to many classic structures, including topological groups and semigroups, paratopological groups, etc. Special emphasis is given to tracing the influence of compactness and its generalizations on the properties of an algebraic operation, causing on occasion the automatic continuity of the operation. The main scope of the book, however, is outside of the locally compact structures, thus distinguishing the monograph from a series of more traditional textbooks.

The book is unique in that it presents very important material, dispersed in hundreds of research articles, not covered by any monograph in existence. The reader is gently introduced to an amazing world at the interface of Algebra, Topology, and Set Theory. He/she will find that the way to the frontier of the knowledge is quite short -- almost every section of the book contains several intriguing open problems whose solutions can contribute significantly to the area.

Contents: Introduction to Topological Groups and Semigroups; Right Topological and Semitopological Groups; Topological Groups: Basic Constructions; Some Special Classes of Topological Groups; Cardinal Invariants of Topological Groups; Moscow Topological Groups and Completions of Groups; Free Topological Groups; R-Factorizable Topological Groups; Compactness and its Generalizations in Topological Groups; Actions of Topological Groups on Topological Spaces. ... Product Description
Starting from basic knowledge of nilpotent (Lie) groups, an algebraic theory of almost-Bieberbach groups, the fundamental groups of infra-nilmanifolds, is developed. These are a natural generalization of the well known Bieberbach groups and many results about ordinary Bieberbach groups turn out to generalize to the almost-Bieberbach groups. Moreover, using affine representations, explicit cohomology computations can be carried out, or resulting in a classification of the almost-Bieberbach groups in low dimensions. The concept of a polynomial structure, an alternative for the affine structures that sometimes fail, is introduced. ... Read more
