Product Description
The purpose of this book is to study the structures needed to model objects in universal algebra, universal coalgebra and theoretical computer science. Universal algebra is used to describe different kinds of algebraic structures, while coalgebras are used to model state-based machines in computer science. The connection between algebras and coalgebras provides a way to connect static data-oriented systems with dynamical behavior-oriented systems. Algebras are used to describe data types and coalgebras describe abstract systems or machines. The book presents a clear overview of the area, from which further study may proceed. ... Read more

In the German newspaper "Zeit" there is a controversial discussion whether this book is in large parts an unauthorized translation of P. Gumm's contribution to "Allgemeine Algebra: Mit einem Anhang über universelle Coalgebra" by Thomas Ihringer and H. P. Gumm, ISBN 978-3885381105. ... Read more

Product Description
Over the past 20 years, the emergence of clone theory, hyperequational theory, commutator theory and tame congruence theory has led to a growth of universal algebra both in richness and in applications, especially in computer science. Yet most of the classic books on the subject are long out of print and, to date, no other book has integrated these theories with the long-established work that supports them.Universal Algebra and Applications in Theoretical Computer Science introduces the basic concepts of universal algebra and surveys some of the newer developments in the field. The first half of the book provides a solid grounding in the core material. A leisurely pace, careful exposition, numerous examples, and exercises combine to form an introduction to the subject ideal for beginning graduate students or researchers from other areas. The second half of the book focuses on applications in theoretical computer science and advanced topics, including Mal'cev conditions, tame congruence theory, clones, and commutators. The impact of the advances in universal algebra on computer science is just beginning to be realized, and the field will undoubtedly continue to grow and mature. Universal Algebra and Applications in Theoretical Computer Science forms an outstanding text and offers a unique opportunity to build the foundation needed for further developments in its theory and in its computer science applications. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Though I haven't read it yet,
I found it(the millenium edition) online as a pdf or ps file. I think this book is good because I see it in many bibliography of the books of related subjects.Try any search engine under the book title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book. I still don't have one and I'm mad about it
The book is excellent introduction to Universal Algebra. In fact, I cannot imagine a person studying the subject who is not familiar with this (already) classic book. The only bad part is that it is impossible to find. Please, print it again. I'll by 10, two for me (one for the office and onefor home) and the rest for my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good but HARD to find!
This is one of the more recent basic texts on Universal Algebra. It is very well written, and is an absolute MUST for students of the subject, as well as a great resource for researchers. Unfortunately, it is out ofprint and extremely difficult to find.I have been looking for a copy inEnglish for seven years with no success.Fortunately, there is a Hungarianedition (with a special appendix on Clones) available to those willing tobreak the language barrier (no small feat...)When will this classictext be reprinted? ... Product Description

Universal Algebra heralded as ". . . the standard reference in a field notorious for the lack of standardization . . .", has become the most authoritative, consistently relied on text in a field with applications in other branches of algebra and other fields such as combinatorics, geometry, and computer science.

Each chapter is followed by an extensive list of exercises and problems. The "state of the art" account also includes new appendices (with contributions from B. Jónsson, R. Quackenbush, W. Taylor, and G. Wenzel) and a well selected additional bibliography of over 1250 papers and books which makes this an indispensable new edition for students, faculty, and workers in the field.

"This book will certainly be, in the years to come, the basic reference to the subject."

--- The American Mathematical Monthly (First Edition)

"In this reviewer's opinion [the author] has more than succeeded in his aim. The problems at the end of each chapter are well-chosen; there are more than 650 of them. The book is especially suitable for self-study, as the author frequently provides ample explanation not only of what he is proving, but also of how and why he is proving it. As a reference work for the specialist or a text for the student, the book is highly recommended."

--- Mathematical Reviews (First Edition)

"Since the first day of its appearance in 1968, this book has been the standard reference in universal algebra, and no book since has reached its quality."

--- Journal of Symbolic Logic (Second Edition)

Product Description
The theory of quasivarieties constitutes an independentdirection in algebra and mathematical logic and specializes in afragment of first-order logic-the so-called universal Hornlogic. This treatise uniformly presents the principal directions ofthe theory from an effective algebraic approach developed by theauthor himself. A revolutionary exposition, this influential textcontains a number of results never before published in book form, featuring in-depth commentary for applications of quasivarieties tographs, convex geometries, and formal languages. Key features includecoverage of the Birkhoff-Mal'tsev problem on the structure of latticesof quasivarieties, helpful exercises, and an extensive list ofreferences. ... Read more

Further Algebra and Applications is the second volume of a new and revised edition of P.M. Cohn's classic three-volume text "Algebra" which is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding introductory algebra textbooks. For this edition, the text has been reworked and updated into two self-contained, companion volumes, covering advanced topics in algebra for second- and third-year undergraduate and postgraduate research students. The first volume, "Basic Algebra", covers the important results of algebra; this companion volume focuses on the applications and covers the more advanced parts of topics such as:- groups and algebras- homological algebra- universal algebra- general ring theory- representations of finite groups- coding theory- languages and automataThe author gives a clear account, supported by worked examples, with full proofs. There are numerous exercises with occasional hints, and some historical remarks.

Product Description
A new model-theoretic approach to universal algebra is offered in this book. Written for computer scientists, it presents a systematic development of the methods and results of universal algebra that are useful in a variety of applications in computer science. The notation is simple and the concepts are clearly presented. The book concerns the algebraic characterization of axiomatic classes of algebras (equational, implicational, and universal Horn classes) by closure operators generalizing the famous Birkhoff Variety Theorem, and the algebraic characterization of the related theories. The book also presents a thorough study of term rewriting systems. Besides basic notions, the Knuth-Bendix completion procedure and termination proof methods are considered. A third main topic is that of fixpoint techniques and complete ordered algebras. Algebraic specifications of abstract data types and algebraic semantics of recursive program schemes are treated as applications. The book is self-contained and suitable both as a textbook for graduate courses and as a reference for researchers. ... Read more
