Book Description

Universal Algebra heralded as ". . . the standard reference in a field notorious for the lack of standardization . . .", has become the most authoritative, consistently relied on text in a field with applications in other branches of algebra and other fields such as combinatorics, geometry, and computer science.

Each chapter is followed by an extensive list of exercises and problems. The "state of the art" account also includes new appendices (with contributions from B. Jónsson, R. Quackenbush, W. Taylor, and G. Wenzel) and a well selected additional bibliography of over 1250 papers and books which makes this an indispensable new edition for students, faculty, and workers in the field.

"This book will certainly be, in the years to come, the basic reference to the subject."

--- The American Mathematical Monthly (First Edition)

"In this reviewer's opinion [the author] has more than succeeded in his aim. The problems at the end of each chapter are well-chosen; there are more than 650 of them. The book is especially suitable for self-study, as the author frequently provides ample explanation not only of what he is proving, but also of how and why he is proving it. As a reference work for the specialist or a text for the student, the book is highly recommended."

--- Mathematical Reviews (First Edition)

"Since the first day of its appearance in 1968, this book has been the standard reference in universal algebra, and no book since has reached its quality."

--- Journal of Symbolic Logic (Second Edition)

Book Description
The book consists of the lectures presented at the NATO ASI on`Algebras and Orders' held in 1991 at the Université deMontréal. The lectures cover a broad spectrum of topics inuniversal algebra, Boolean algebras, lattices and orders, and theirlinks with graphs, relations, topology and theoretical computerscience. More specifically, the contributions deal with the followingtopics: Abstract clone theory (W. Taylor); Hyperidentities andhypervarieties (D. Schweigert); Arithmetical algebras and varieties(A. Pixley); Boolean algebras with operators (B. Jonsson); Algebraicduality (B. Davey); Model-theoretic aspects of partial algebras (P.Burmeister); Free lattices (R. Freese); Algebraic ordered sets (M.Erné); Diagrams of orders (I. Rival); Essentially minimalgroupoids (H. Machida, I.G. Rosenberg); and Formalization of predicatecalculus (I. Fleischer). Most of the papers are up-to-date surveyswritten by leading researchers, or topics that are either new or havewitnessed recent substantial progress. In most cases, the surveys arethe first available in the literature. The book is accessible tograduate students and researchers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Though I haven't read it yet,
I found it(the millenium edition) online as a pdf or ps file. I think this book is good because I see it in many bibliography of the books of related subjects.Try any search engine under the book title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book. I still don't have one and I'm mad about it
The book is excellent introduction to Universal Algebra. In fact, I cannot imagine a person studying the subject who is not familiar with this (already) classic book. The only bad part is that it is impossible to find. Please, print it again. I'll by 10, two for me (one for the office and onefor home) and the rest for my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good but HARD to find!
This is one of the more recent basic texts on Universal Algebra. It is very well written, and is an absolute MUST for students of the subject, as well as a great resource for researchers. Unfortunately, it is out ofprint and extremely difficult to find.I have been looking for a copy inEnglish for seven years with no success.Fortunately, there is a Hungarianedition (with a special appendix on Clones) available to those willing tobreak the language barrier (no small feat...)When will this classictext be reprinted? ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Over the past 20 years, the emergence of clone theory, hyperequational theory, commutator theory and tame congruence theory has led to a growth of universal algebra both in richness and in applications, especially in computer science. Yet most of the classic books on the subject are long out of print and, to date, no other book has integrated these theories with the long-established work that supports them.Universal Algebra and Applications in Theoretical Computer Science introduces the basic concepts of universal algebra and surveys some of the newer developments in the field. The first half of the book provides a solid grounding in the core material. A leisurely pace, careful exposition, numerous examples, and exercises combine to form an introduction to the subject ideal for beginning graduate students or researchers from other areas. The second half of the book focuses on applications in theoretical computer science and advanced topics, including Mal'cev conditions, tame congruence theory, clones, and commutators. The impact of the advances in universal algebra on computer science is just beginning to be realized, and the field will undoubtedly continue to grow and mature. Universal Algebra and Applications in Theoretical Computer Science forms an outstanding text and offers a unique opportunity to build the foundation needed for further developments in its theory and in its computer science applications. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Several of the contributions to this volume bring forward many mutually beneficial interactions and connections between the three domains of the title. Developing them was the main purpose of the NATO ASI summerschool held in Montreal in 2003. Although some connections, for example between semigroups and automata, were known for a long time, developing them and surveying them in one volume is novel and hopefully stimulating for the future. Another aspect is the emphasis on the structural theory of automata that studies ways to contstruct big automata from small ones. The volume also has contributions on top current research or surveys in the three domains. One contribution even links clones of universal algebra with the computational complexity of computer science. Three contributions introduce the reader to research in the former East block. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Further Algebra and Applications is the second volume of a new and revised edition of P.M. Cohn's classic three-volume text "Algebra" which is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding introductory algebra textbooks. For this edition, the text has been reworked and updated into two self-contained, companion volumes, covering advanced topics in algebra for second- and third-year undergraduate and postgraduate research students.
The first volume, "Basic Algebra", covers the important results of algebra; this companion volume focuses on the applications and covers the more advanced parts of topics such as:
- groups and algebras
- homological algebra
- universal algebra
- general ring theory
- representations of finite groups
- coding theory
- languages and automata
The author gives a clear account, supported by worked examples, with full proofs. There are numerous exercises with occasional hints, and some historical remarks. ... Read more

Book Description
This volume is devoted to the development of an algebraic modelof databases. The first chapter presents a general introduction. Thefollowing sixteen chapters are divided into three main parts. Part Ideals with various aspects of universal algebra. The chapters of PartI discuss topics such as sets, algebras and models, fundamentalstructures, categories, the category of sets, topoi, fuzzy sets, varieties of algebras, axiomatic classes, category algebra andalgebraic theories.
Part II deals with different approaches to the algebraization ofpredicate calculus. This material is intended to be applied chiefly todatabases, although some discussion of pure algebraic applications isalso given. Discussed here are topics such as Boolean algebras andpropositional calculus, Halmos algebras and predicate calculus, connections with model theory, and the categorial approach toalgebraic logic.
Part III is concerned specifically with the algebraic model ofdatabases, which considers the database as an algebraic structure.Topics dealt with in this part are the algebraic aspects of databases, their equivalence and restructuring, symmetries and the Galois theoryof databases, and constructions in database theory. The volume closeswith a discussion and conclusions, and an extensive bibliography.
For mathematicians, computer scientists and database engineers, withan interest in applications of algebra and logic.
