Product Description
This book presents the state of the art in sparse and multiscale image and signal processing, covering linear multiscale transforms, such as wavelet, ridgelet, or curvelet transforms, and non-linear multiscale transforms based on the median and mathematical morphology operators. Recent concepts of sparsity and morphological diversity are described and exploited for various problems such as denoising, inverse problem regularization, sparse signal decomposition, blind source separation, and compressed sensing. This book weds theory and practice in examining applications in areas such as astronomy, biology, physics, digital media, and forensics. A final chapter explores a paradigm shift in signal processing, showing that previous limits to information sampling and extraction can be overcome in very significant ways.Matlab and IDL code accompany these methods and applications to reproduce the experiments and illustrate the reasoning and methodology of the research available for download at the associated Web site. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Title is misleading. It should be "a collection of definitions of termson sparse image and signal processing"
As a student trying to conduct a research in "sparsity, signal processing and compressed sensing", I was happy to see that this book was coming. There is not a single book written specially in these topic so far. This is probably because this topic is new. This book has nothing other than bunch of definitions, some images and algorithms. No theorems stated, no proofs, no examples. Tries to cover everything but only in definitions. A chapter on compressed sensing has only 7 pages of relevant materials once again with no important theorems and results. What a waste of money. ... Read more

Product Description
Although DSP has long been considered an EE topic, recent developments have also generated significant interest from the computer science community. DSP applications in the consumer market, such as bioinformatics, the MP3 audio format, and MPEG-based cable/satellite television have fueled a desire to understand this technology outside of hardware circles. Designed for upper division engineering and computer science students as well as practicing engineers, Digital Signal Processing Using Matlab and Wavelets emphasizes the practical applications of signal processing. Over 100 Matlab projects and wavelet techniques provide the latest applications of DSP, including image processing, games, filters, transforms, networking, parallel processing, and sound. The book also provides the mathematical processes and techniques needed to ensure an understanding of DSP theory. Designed to be incremental in difficulty, the book will benefit readers who are unfamiliar with complex mathematical topics or those limited in programming experience. Beginning with an introduction to Matlab programming, it moves through filters, sinusoids, sampling, the Fourier transform, the Z transform and other key topics. An entire chapter is dedicated to the discussion of wavelets and their applications. A CD-ROM (platform independent) accompanies the book and contains source code, projects, and Microsoft® PowerPoint slides. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ok primer
text is not incrediblythourough or rigorous. Introduces some concepts like FFT without explaining them fully, leaving that for later sections. If buying for a class you've not much choice, if buying for reference or personal study I'd look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to DSP
Digital Signal Processing using MATLAB and Wavelets provides a gentle introduction to topics in DSP and gives easy MATLAB examples to get you up and running right away. The thing I like best is that it is written in plain English with a liberal amount of diagrams to help you follow. The author's voice comes through and you get the sense that you're being guided through the subject instead of reading a mathematical reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely basic : Good only for beginners
If you know something about MATLAB and DSP, you will not learn anything from this book.
It is very elementary. The title should be have been "DSP using MATLAB for dummies"!
It is only useful for the people who are just beginning to learn MATLAB/DSP

Product Description
A comprehensive, self-contained treatment of Fourier analysis and wavelets—now in a new edition

Through expansive coverage and easy-to-follow explanations, A First Course in Wavelets with Fourier Analysis, Second Edition provides a self-contained mathematical treatment of Fourier analysis and wavelets, while uniquely presenting signal analysis applications and problems. Essential and fundamental ideas are presented in an effort to make the book accessible to a broad audience, and, in addition, their applications to signal processing are kept at an elementary level.

The book begins with an introduction to vector spaces, inner product spaces, and other preliminary topics in analysis. Subsequent chapters feature:

  • The development of a Fourier series, Fourier transform, and discrete Fourier analysis

  • Improved sections devoted to continuous wavelets and two-dimensional wavelets

  • The analysis of Haar, Shannon, and linear spline wavelets

  • The general theory of multi-resolution analysis

  • Updated MATLAB® code and expanded applications to signal processing

  • The construction, smoothness, and computation of Daubechies' wavelets

  • Advanced topics such as wavelets in higher dimensions, decomposition and reconstruction, and wavelet transform

Applications to signal processing are provided throughout the book, most involving the filtering and compression of signals from audio or video. Some of these applications are presented first in the context of Fourier analysis and are later explored in the chapters on wavelets. New exercises introduce additional applications, and complete proofs accompany the discussion of each presented theory. Extensive appendices outline more advanced proofs and partial solutions to exercises as well as updated MATLAB® routines that supplement the presented examples.

A First Course in Wavelets with Fourier Analysis, Second Edition is an excellent book for courses in mathematics and engineering at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also a valuable resource for mathematicians, signal processing engineers, and scientists who wish to learn about wavelet theory and Fourier analysis on an elementary level. ... Read more

A wonderful book. Here the different topics are treated carefully in a very straightforward way. It gives a clear path for the real understanding of the wavelet analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn Wavelet
If you want to learn Wavelet theory in a easy way like reading a story book then this is the book. It deals with the most complicated thing in the easiest way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Book for Wavelet Analysis!!!!
...this book is one of most informative and legible books on wavelt theories and applications.

The author paves the theoretical development about wavelets and multi-resolution analysis EXCELLENTLY. With this book, you can construct wavelets for your own applications in engineering and science disciplines.

This book is very good for first year engineering-majored graduate students and all engineering scholars.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good Starter on Wavelets
At the time of writing of this review (October 2001), a standard academic search procedure
produces about twenty references per week of scientific papers using wavelet analysis in a very wide spectrum of sciences. More than 160 english language books have been published on wavelets since the first books appeared around 1990. Yet even now it is rare to find a book on this subject which is aiming at undergraduate students and yet is mathematically responsible, without being heavy going. Boggess and Narcovich have tried to do just that, and to my mind have admirably succeeded.
Assuming a standard background knowledge in calculus and linear algebra that many science and engineering students acquire in their first two years at university, they present the basics of Fourier analysis and wavelets in eight brief chapters. To prepare the way, they start in chapter 0 with an introduction to inner product spaces, without using advanced analysis, and building on the experience with ordinary vector spaces.
Also a sniff of linear operator theory is offered.
Chapter 1 introduces Fourier series in real and complex form. These originated in the eighteenth century study of vibrations and in the theory of heat, made famous by Fourier's classic book of 1808: Analytical Theory of Heat. The mathematical claims Fourier made, but which he could not all prove himself, gave the impetus to an enormous development of both mathematical theory and applications in all fields of natural science, which is still going on today. The applications briefly mentioned here are denoising and compression of signals, and finding the solution of partial differential equations. Various aspects of the convergence of Fourier series are dealt with. All concepts are illustrated with a good set of clear figures, and the chapter finishes with exercises that are going from very elementary to a little more ambitious, sometimes involving the use of simple computer algebra tasks. This format is maintained thorugh the entire text, except for the last chapter.
Chapter 2 proceeds with the Fourier Transform, including the important theory of linear time invariant filters. The existence of the impulse response function and its convolution character are shown. As an example the noise reducing Butterworth filter is presented. Sampling and the Nyquist frequency are touched upon, and a derivation of the uncertainty relations, originally coming from quantum mechanics, is given.
To analyse discrete data, one needs the discrete Fourier Transform, which is the subject of chapter 3, including of course the Fast Fourier Transform. Also the z-transform is introduced. Examples given are elementary cases of parameter identification in vibration, numerical solution of ordinarydifferentialequations, as well as in the exercises: noise reduction and data compression.

These first 153 pages serve as a good undergraduate introduction to Fourier analysis.
The second half of the book is devoted to wavelets. Chapter 4 deals exclusively with Haar wavelets which are the oldest wavelets because they date from 1910! These wavelets constitute an orthonormal basis of functions, which makes for fast calucation, a very important aspect for many applications. The core ideas of the central concept of a "multiresolution analysis" of a signal, can be demonstrated with these simple wavelets. All of this is already understandable without the machinery of the preceding Fourier analysis, so you could jump into the book here and start reading about wavelets right away, picking up the Fourier analysis from the first part bit by bit as the need arises. As applications denoising and compression are mentioned again, as is the detection of a discontinuity in a signal.
The general case of a multiresolution analysis is the subject ofchapter 5. Again a large part of the discussion can be swallowed without the need of the Fourier transform point of view. The explanation of the structure of a multiresolution analysis leading to an orhtonormal basis of wavelets is straightforward and clear. It is only when we want to go into more detail about the precise characteristics of the underlying wavelet and scaling function that the Fourier point of view is introduced. This then leads up to the presentation of the famous Daubechies wavelets in chapter 6. These wavelets revolutionised the field after their publication in 1988.
Chapter 7 which closes the book, gives several short remarks about various other topics among which are two-dimensional wavelets, and the continuous wavelet transform.
This chapter is more sketchy than the others, and left me much less satisfied. Also the motivation why these subjects are chosen was lacking almost completely, and there are no exercises. I was particularly disappointed not to find any discussion of the relative merits of the continuous versus the discrete wavelet transform, and there is no mention of any application of the continuous case. Yet the latter is also used frequently in many important scientific applications, and it started the modern wavelet endeavour in the early eighties in France.
That being said I still think this is a very useful book for anybody wanting to start withwavelets at an undergraduate level. A few helpful Matlab Codes are collected in an appendix as well as the more difficult parts of some proofs. The exercises make this good course material, but as a text for self study it will also be quite satisfactory for many newcomers that find most of the existing books too demanding. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wavelets and Sub-band Coding
It is an excelent book for anyone interested in wavelets from a Discrete Time Signal Processing point of view.
It has a good introduction and review of basic topics, concepts and definitions necessary to grab the basis of DSP in the first chapters. Therefor, it provides a good framework to study wavelets without having studied DSP.
However, it is better if you have studied DSP prior to reading this book. You will enjoy it much more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Engineering, CS, programming, math...
There are few books that sucessfully cover the interface of diverse fields, and yet this lovely book represents a subject that thrives on the interconnections. It is a great textbook, and it works well for selfstudy. The two subjects wavelets and subband filtering [from signal processing] are quite different, and have distinct and independent lives, they have different aims, and different histories. And yet, it is the happy marriage of the two that enriches the the union to an extraordinary degree. Multiresolutions are the bread and butter of wavelet algorithms, and they thrive on methods from signal processing, the quadrature-mirror filter construction, for example. One reason some books in the subject miss the target is that most authors know one of the subjects well, but not the others. Diverse subjects have quite different languages, and different terminology. The present authors are indeed on target, and they know it all. They come from engineering, but they know all the math;--the connections are made. And they strike a balance: Engineers can find what they want for the practical problems, and the mathematicians will not be disappointed. Programmers can pick up what is needed in their world. The book has been tested in courses, including mine. If you pick it for a course, the authors have material on their web pages that serves as a wonderful supplement. Lovely!

2-0 out of 5 stars Hurried, incomplete mathematical treatment and undefined
The authors look hurried to catch the wave of wavelets and compiled hot topics of the publication date without almost any logical order. Lots of material taken from others' papers without generosity in the references. The book is missing to tell readers its purpose! Is it a mathematical treatment of wavelet transforms or an engineering book? I could not answer this question as a doctoral student. It's very much like a Ph.D. dissertation of the second author. Frankly, I was disappointed with the quality of the book from a known researcher like Prof. Vetterli.

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost a great book
One get's the feeling that this is the outline for the definitive book onwavelets. But the authors can't make up there minds whether the bookshould be mostly theoreticalor merely useful. A great deal of why andwhat - and not too much how to. Hopefully there will be another, moreinsightful edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars The faithful shall be rewarded
Martin Vetterli is the foremost researcher in the area of wavelets in signal processing, and one of the best presenters whom I've met. That may be sufficient to convince some people to buy this book, but may discourageothers from buying this book.

One thing to keep in mind while readingthis book is the following: The faithful shall be rewarded. If you'reuninitiated, this book can be very intimidating, and Martin goes throughthe first parts (considered to be review) a little bit hurriedly, all theway through the end of Chapter 3.

But once you get into Chapter 4, youwill be treated with an excellent coverage of why wavelets are so great, and the state-of-the-art of its research and application. This is where thetwo authors truly work their magic in their writing.

Even as you try toget past Chapter 3, there are many gems to be discovered, for example theproof of the ambiguity function in time-frequency analysis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A breathe of fresh air...
Spectral theory forms a natural environment for the study of wavelets. The use operator algebras is unique and interesting. The text is written such that the analysis is precise and clear throughout. The book reads nicely without being chatty or overly terse and tiresome. Many of tge proofs are extremely well laid out. The problems are carefully chosen (ranging from challenging to knock your socks off bruisers!) so get your erasers out. Mathematicians, computer scientists, theoretical physicists working in quantum computing will likely find this book useful. Recommended to anyone working with wavelets.
A little bit of functional analysis will come in handy for those of wanting to do a self study.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece in wavelets
This is a very well written book on the theory of wavelets and its applications. The presentation is self-contained and may serve as an introduction for someone who wants to learn about this topic. It also is an excellent book for those who have an advanced graduate degree in applied mathematics since it demonstrates how to truly understand complex concepts. This book gives a general presentation of some recent developments in wavelet theory with an emphasis on techniques that have a geometric and spectral-theoretic flavor. It can be certainly used as a textbook for graduate students as well as as a reference book for the specialists and researchers. A very nice feature of the book are the tutorials at the beginning of each chapter and some sections, which serve as summaries of main ideas and guides through the background ideas and motivation. At the end of every chapter there are plenty of excercises of various level of difficulty. Overall, this is a great book and I recommend it highly to a motivated reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Distinguished link between math and computer science
This is an important mathematical reference written in excellent style.Wavelets have found applications in many areas of engineering and CS.The authors provide a detailed, rich and entertaining tour through this relatively young but important field for both math and CS/Eng.Connections are, e.g., made between advanced CS virtual-reality applications such as audio-systems processing, future applications such as quantum computing, and advanced math in functional analysis and operator theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh look at wavelets
The Book by Bratteli and Jorgensen is a superb book on wavelet's theory. It is very well written and has new and a fresh point of view on the subject. Although there are several good books on wavelets, the book by Bratteli and Jorgensen covers an important niche that has not been covered before. In particular

1- The book covers the theory of wavelets from the point of view of operators and functional analysis and will appeal to a growing number of pure as well as applied mathematicians interested in the subject.

2- The writing of the book is very appealing: every chapter starts by a tutorial that gives motivation as well as intuition. It is then followed by a very clean mathematical development of the subject, together with many examples, figures, and applications from physics and engineering.A set of nice problems is provided at the end of each chapter. Thus this book can be used as a graduate textbook or for mathematical seminars in mathematics departments.

3- This book can even be used by experts in wavelet theory for learning about recent developments and new perspectives from operator theory and functional analysis.

I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars an intriguing new wavelet book
This is a book about an important topic in applied mathematics by two authors with excellentcredentials in both pure and applied areas. The reader will find many intriguing threads connecting wavelets to other parts of mathematics, including a wavelet index theorem, quantum computing, the ubiquitous C*-algebras O_n and, of course, spectral theory. The graphics are meticulously done.

I look forward to learning a lot from it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy from this seller
The order is never shipped out and got no response from the seller. Had to report to Amazon finally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good balance between theory and practice
This book provides a good balance between the mathematical theoretical foundations and the implementation of wavelet algorithms. The chapter of time-frequency analysis is specially relevant, and very hard to find in other books about the topic. Theonly miss is about more practical implementations of the algorithms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference for implementation of transform algorithms
This is the only book i know that is focused on implementation aspects of numerical transforms. It explains quite well the practical issues that are rarely touched in digital signal processing and wavelet textbooks. It spans fourier transforms, cosine, wavelets,... It is rather self-contained, if you have problems with maths you can skip chapter one, other chapters should be quite readable by every science grad student. Be aware that this isnot a transform textbook, so you should first learn a few things about numerical transforms, wavelets and subband coding before getting into this one (go to Oppenheim and Schafer for DSP, Vetterli for subband coding). A good textbook for a course on numerical transforms implementation.

5-0 out of 5 stars *Creating* wavelets!
This is where to learn about wavelet packets, and what they can do.-- Where to learn the programming techniques that are especially adapted to wavelet algorithms, and which have proved their worth. The book actually tells you how to write a program;-- it motivates, and explains the elements step by step. It also gives the background, and offers a beautiful presentation of the essentials. It is selfcontained and a pleasure to read. It has the algorithmic approach to the discrete wavelet transform;--a topic that is hard to find elsewhere,-- at least in a systematic presentation.

4-0 out of 5 stars not the easiest one around but well describing algorithms

5-0 out of 5 stars Infinite in all directions.
I have used the book, teaching a beginning course in wavelets, and it went over well with the students: they like that the proofs are clearly spelled out, and that the presentation is systematic. I supplemented it with S Mallat and Y Meyer's books. That was to give the course a more algorithmic slant. However, I feel that there are many valid approaches, and that the subject is infinite in all directions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction for Wavelet
For those who would like to learn the beauty of Wavelet theory, which is a great finding in Mathematics, this book would shed some light on it. Wavelet is elegant, a simple formula leads to so much interests, theapplication of Wavelet is everywhere, particularly in modern communicationsand signal processing, and there is still more waiting for people toexplore. 4-0 out of 5 stars Wavelets: from valley to crest
Choosing a book on Wavelets to use as material for an introductory course is far from simple: there are many books on the subject and often the mathematical starting level ofthe audience is not uniform. But the book by Blatter is in my opinion very good if one wants to start from scratch (well, not quite of course: some knowledge of Lebesgue integration and infinite dimensional Banach and Hilbert spaces of functions is needed) in a mathematical or technical environment.

Starting with 2 chapters on Fourier analysis, going from windowed Fourier transform to a first introduction of continuous wavelet transform (CWT), and giving connections to several well known facts from signal analysis (the Heisenberg uncertainty priciple and the Shannon sampling theorem), the theoretical framework of the CWT is given in chapter 3. Interesting are the results on the decay of the wavelet transform in terms of the smoothness of the signal and the number of vanishing moments for the wavelet.

This is followed by a chapter on the important subject of 'frames' and one on multiresolution analysis (the foundation for the hierarchy of orthonormal bases for L^2(R)). The scaling function (time domain) is actuallly constructed from its properties in the Fourier domain (i.e. the frequency domain).

The final chapter treats the basic idea behind and constructions of orthonormal wavelets with compact support (including the Daubechies wavelets), also touching upon binary interpolation and so called spline wavelets.

For applications to a host of disciplines it is possible to consult one of the many applied books: in my opinion it is necessary to have a firm grasp of the underlying theoretical framework before really understanding what one is doing. I have nothing against applications, but once one has to go back to the roots: back to the valley to be able to reach the crest of the wavelet without accidents.

4-0 out of 5 stars A real primer
This booklet, the translation of the original German version "Wavelets - Eine Einfuehrung" (published by Vieweg-Verlag), is indeed a real primer.

It removes old layers of thinking about the structure of signals and replaces them by an elegant formalism rooted in the theory of Hilbert spaces and orthonormal bases.

A graduate background on Hilbert spaces (L_2 etc.), the Fourier transform and some integration theory (Lebesgue integration) is recommended.

There are very few (easily corrected) typos and the book can be used as a basis for a one quarter course of 4 hours each week during 7 weeks (or a semester of 2 hours), with a backing of handout problems on several aspects of thetheory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good on theory-bad on application
This book is a good tool for those who want to explore the mathematicalrigors of wavelet theory. The "primer" assumes that the user is afairly well versed mathematician, but the derivations are complete. Thereis little to nothing said about the practical applications of wavelets. Forapplications, look to other books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well presented , well orginized and broad coverage
Dr. Rao's approach to the Wavelet Transform takes a less traditional method to the study of this complex field. His text starts with a firm development of the fundamentals. This provides a secure foundation for theintermediate level topics to follow. He ends the book with some complexdevelopments and new directions taken by the transform. His approach ismathematical but never looses sight of the practicality of the transform.Applications and examples are peppered throughout the text to provide thereader with reinforcing tools. Relevant exercises and projects are alsoprovided along with Matlab routines to perform most of the topicsdiscussed. A great text and a valuable reference. Attention is paid to thedevelopment of Filter Banks and the relationship to the Wavelet Transform.A background in Digital Filtering is recommended to any reader. WaveletPackets are discussed along with topics in Image Compression, Denoising,Edge and Object Detection and general Wavelet Filter Design.

1-0 out of 5 stars Better wavelet books out there
This book is divided into two sections:Time Frequency and Wavelets.Sadly, Shie Qian does not provide comprehensiveness in either subject, nor does he add to the knowledge base.I was expecting a more "cookbook" introductory approach to wavelets, but alas, for naught. To add insult to injury, there is not a hardcover version available to date. For shame.

My recommendations:
1.If you want to learn Time-Frequency analysis (windowed Fourier Transforms, Wigner-Ville ala Cohen's Class) -- download the Rice Time-Frequency Toolbox(for Matlab) and associated documentation. It's free, and the tutorials are outstanding. Not to mention, Qian seems to make liberal usage of it the book in question.

2a.For the electrical engineer, find a book that approaches wavelets by either branching off of Fourier Theory(provides a grounding in orthogonal, separable bases) or via subband coding(which correlates with the computation of wavelet transforms). Mallat's Wavelet Tour of Signal Processing is pretty good.

2b.For the math wiz(or those engineers with masochistic tendencies), find something with an angle on Riesz frames and bases.Avoid subband coding like the plague if you're not into block diagrams.A good start is Daubechies 10 Lectures on Wavelets, or anything through Birkhauser publishing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on signal processing
This book studies the two signal properties we are most interested in, time and frequency. Unlike other books, which usually concentrate on one topic of advanced signal processing, this book covers both time-frequency and wavelet analysis. The author organizes these topics in a clear structure with vivid English. The reviews at the beginning of every chapter are very
helpful for readers. Before I have this book, I read some mathematics books on wavelet analysis that were difficult to understand. The author explains the theories not only mathematically but also physically. Thus, this book gives me great help during my research on vibration and noise control,
modal analysis and acoustical signal processing. I strongly recommend this book to those who study signal processing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Friendly Guide to Time-Frequency Analysis
The aim of time-frequency analysis is to describe how the frequency or spectral content of a signal evolves. For engineers, scientists, and mathematicians, this self-contained book brings together the methods that have been developed to study time-varying spectra, and presents in simple language the physical and mathematical ideas, their origin and motivation, and the challenges of the field. The book is written clearly and well by a leading researcher
in the area of time-frequency analysis.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone
with an interest in the field of signal processing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to time frequency and wavelet analysis
This book is very successful in setting out the uses of time frequency analysis and wavelet transforms, employing interesting examples of their applications throughout.Starting from a nice discussion of Fourier transforms, it develops an intuitively appealing presentation of time variant filters, the wavelet transform and the Wigner-Ville distribution. The mathematics is clearly presented without unduly simplifying the proofs or concepts involved.I would strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the field of signal processing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of material!
The textbook, actually a collection of lectures, provides a lot of material and examples, and it tries to lead the reader from the basics of subject to the applications of wavelets. Despite of the wide rangepresented by the chapters, the high reciprocal independence and thecompletness of proposed path, as an introductory book I would prefer theclassical "Ten Lectures on Wavelets", even if Benedetto-Frazierwork could be more suitable to get at-a-glance what people are doing (i.e.were doing at the moment of publication) with wavelets. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well motivated!
The last ten years witnessed quite a few new books on wavelts, but it is an active subject, and it branches out in many
directions. The present book is a second edition[the frst from 1994]. The new one is updated, and has more applications; great
for engineers and others who use wavelets. The thesis in the book is to present wavelts on the same footing as other orthogonal systems, Fourier bases, Legendre and Hermite polynomials ... This gives much more unity to both classical subjects in transform theory, and the new wavelet tools. And the authors do a very nice job of presenting this, even accessible to the novice...To me, the chapters on the Haar systems, Shannon's theory, and stochastic processes, the Karhunen-Loeve
setting, are done really nicely. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description
Wavelet theory had its origin in quantum field theory, signal analysis, and function space theory. In these areas wavelet-like algorithms replace the classical Fourier-type expansion of a function. This unique new book is an excellent introduction to the basic properties of wavelets, from background math to powerful applications. The authors provide elementary methods for constructing wavelets, and illustrate several new classes of wavelets. The text begins with a description of local sine and cosine bases that have been shown to be very effective in applications. Very little mathematical background is needed to follow this material. A complete treatment of band-limited wavelets follows. These are characterized by some elementary equations, allowing the authors to introduce many new wavelets. Next, the idea of multiresolution analysis (MRA) is developed, and the authors include simplified presentations of previous studies, particularly for compactly supported wavelets. Some of the topics treated include:oSeveral bases generated by a single function via translations and dilationsoMultiresolution analysis, compactly supported wavelets, and spline waveletsoBand-limited waveletsoUnconditionality of wavelet basesoCharacterizations of many of the principal objects in the theory of wavelets, such as low-pass filters and scaling functionsThe authors also present the basic philosophy that all orthonormal wavelets are completely characterized by two simple equations, and that most properties and constructions of wavelets can be developed using these two equations. Material related to applications is provided, and constructions of splines wavelets are presented. Mathematicians, engineers, physicists, and anyone with a mathematical background will find this to be an important text for furthering their studies on wavelets. ... Read more
