Agnosticism is the believe that it is impossible to know certain things for sure. There are different reasons for which one does not know, and for this reason we make a differnence between weak and strong agnostism. A weak agnost simple claims that he does not know whether God exists. This means that he does not exclude the possibility of knowing whether God exists. Strong agnoticism claims that it is impossible to know whether God exists. Somehow this is very strong claim, as it requires knowledge about reality to know this for sure. Extractions: by Art Thomas (with Emanuel Haldeman-Julius) Thanks to CRT President Lanny Swerdlow, those who attended the June 18th CRT meeting enjoyed watching a fine video performance by actor Henry Fonda. Fonda portrayed the great Clarence Darrow doing a splendid job busting religious bunk. Lanny also read from a couple of news clippings about Darrow in his late years. Then he read a eulogy to Darrow by Emanuel Haldeman-Julius, who had published several books by the noted lawyer, that follows: Clarence Darrow Clarence Darrow, 80-year-old lawyer, Agnostic, liberal, defender of the "underdog" and fighter for civil rights, died on March 13, 1938. He had lived a full, useful, constructive life. As a speaker, he moved tens of thousands to an appreciation of Freethought and humanism. As a writer, especially in his numerous little volumes which I published during the past 20 years, Darrow reached even a larger audience with his messages of enlightenment and realistic evaluations of supernaturalism. For two decades, Darrow was a warm friend of my establishment, pouring his writings and speeches into my presses and always refusing to accept a dollar in payment for his contributions. I offered him money numerous times, but he always declined to accept, once even returning a check I had sent him for his part in a debate on religion. He told me many times that speaking and writing for Freethought were efforts he wanted to dive to humanity, without financial rewards. Darrow, the lawyer, is known to most Americans. Darrow, the Freethinker, wasn't as widely known, but the spade work he did for Agnosticism stands out as a career in itself, one that will, in time, be placed along side that of Ingersoll and other mind-liberators. Once, when asked his attitude toward religion, Darrow replied:

To me that verse is probably one of the truest and most personal that I have yet read, because my story is a good example of it. The truth of Christ faded in and out of my life in different shades and colors until I finally got planted in some good soil. I was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, and was brought up in the United Methodist Church.

He was elected to the British parliament six times, and each time that body refused to seat him because he was an Atheist and because he would not swear his allegiance to queen and country, so help him ``God.'' Everyone in England knew Bradlaugh and his fight, and he raised the issue of Atheism to every person in public life as he sought allies. The intellectual community contained, at the time, Sir Thomas Huxley, and he coined the word agnostic in 1869 to keep from aligning himself with the hard-pressed Bradlaugh. The word gnosis is the Greek for ``knowledge.'' In words of Greek derivation the prefix a is a privative, that is it gives the word a negative sense. Literally it means ``against knowledge'' or ``negating knowledge.'' Nonetheless, I hope to show that agnosticism can be so formulated that it is no less philosophically respectable than theism and atheism. This is not a mere philosophical exercise; for, as it happens, the formulated position is I think the one to which I subscribe. I include a qualification here since it may be that the position to which I subscribe is better characterised as fallibilist atheism but more of that anon. Extractions: The Summer 1981 FREE INQUIRY contained the article What is Agnosticism?" by H. J. Blackham. It dealt primarily with intimations of agnosticism among skeptical philosophers before 1869, when Thomas Henry Huxley invented the term as a label for his personal approach to religious and philosophical questions. This article will provide some history about agnosticism since 1869 and will suggest the reasons for the introduction of the term evangelical agnosticism . It will not deal with the relationship between the words agnosticism skepticism rationalism , and other related terms in the freethought tradition. Huxleys account of his invention of the word agnostic was written in an essay entitled Agnosticism some twenty years after he coined the term. At this time he was sixty-four years old and his place in the Victorian establishment was very secure. He was an original and influential member of the London School Board, president of the Royal Society, and a trustee of the British Museum. Called Darwins Bulldog, Huxley was renowned for his spirited defense of many scientific ideas that were unpopular with the religious establishment. He wrote: When I reached intellectual maturity and began to ask myself whether I was an atheist, a theist, or a pantheist; a materialist or an idealist; a Christian or a freethinker; I found that the more I learned and reflected, the less ready was the answer; until, at last, I came to the conclusion that I had neither art nor part with any of these denominations, except the last.
