Shia-muslimerne anerkender 12 legitime efter­følgere til Muhammed, hvoraf den sidste var Imam Mahdi. Som eneboer kommunikerede Imam Mahdi med sine tilhængere gennem talsmænd kaldet Babs I 1844 tog en 24 år gammel persisk uld-handler titlen Bab (født 1810) og begyndte at prædike en ny religion. Bab pro­klamerede, at han var en større profet end Muhammed, sendt af Gud for at afløse Muhammeds religion og udskifte Islams love med sine egne. Troende tilhængere flokkedes om ham, men muslimske le­dere, der ikke accepterede hans budskab, fik ham fængslet, og han tilbragte de fleste af sine seks aktive år i fængslet. I 1850 blev han henrettet.
