Der Theologe Dr. Eberhard Arnold, seine Frau Emmy und ihre Schwester Else von Hollander kamen mit ihrem bürgerlichen Leben in Berlin nicht mehr zurecht. Sie sahen in der Bergpredigt einen Aufruf zu etwas völlig anderem. Zusammen kamen sie zu dem Schluss, dass für sie der einzige Weg, diesem Aufruf zu folgen, ein Leben in Gütergemeinschaft sei. Als Vorbild diente die Gemeinschaft der Urchristen, wie sie in der Apostelgeschichte beschrieben ist. Stundenlang hat man in ihrem Wohnzimmer darüber diskutiert. 1920 erfuhren die Arnolds von einer Villa im hessischen Kleindorf Sannerz, die zum Verkauf stand. Es war die Gelegenheit, auf die sie gewartet hatten. Obwohl der Verkäufer die Villa noch nicht geräumt hatte, zogen die Arnolds am 21. Juni 1920 nach Sannerz. Zunächst wohnte die Familie im Nebengebäude des Gasthauses. Eine christliche Lebensgemeinschaft entstand, die Eberhard Arnold "Bruderhof" nannte.

Erich Fromm, in his classic "Escape From Freedom," defines authoritarianism as "the tendency to give up the independence of one's own individual self and to fuse one's self with somebody or something outside of oneself in order to acquire the strength which the individual self is lacking." He equates authoritarianism with the sado- masochistic personality, and also points out that this personality type was typical of the lower middle class in Germany. One ex-member said to me, "Nazism did not just spring up out of nowhere. It was all there before Hitler, who just brought it to fruition. And it was in the Bruderhof character." In Eberhard Arnold's outspoken criticism of the National Socialist party, it is not the trait of blind obedience which he despises, but the blind obedience to Hitler. Generations of authoritarian parents had prepared the German people to follow unquestioningly wherever Hitler led them. "All authority comes from the Heavenly Father" became "All authority comes from Daddy" and finally, "All authority comes from the Fuhrer." Alice Miller, in her incomparable study of the "Poisonous Pedagogy" entitled "For Your Own Good," quotes Hitler's heir apparent, Rudolph Hess: "We note with pride that one man remains beyond all criticism, and that is the Fuhrer. Extractions: On Thursday, March 27, the CBS program 48 Hours broadcast a slanderous attack on the Bruderhof communities. 48 Hours had been preparing a program on the Bruderhof communities for some time, but following the mass suicide of the Heaven's Gate group in San Diego, CBS took the material they had collected and used it produce a program on "cults." The result was that the Bruderhof communities were thrown in with Heaven's Gate, Jonestown, the Branch Dividians, and the Order of the Solar Temple. The fact that the Bruderhof communities maintain a web page on the Internet was used by Dan Rather in this special edition of 48 Hours that "will take a look at the darder side of the Web." It is fairly obvious that this attack on the Bruderhof communities comes as a result of their active support for Mumia Abu-Jamal. The Bruderhof communities don't begin to fit the establishment's own definition of a "cult" which usually boils down to 1) total isolation from the outside world and 2) total obedience to a maniacal leader. The Bruderhof communities are Christian communities in the Anabaptist tradition. The name Anabaptist goes back to the Protestant reformation, and was applied to dissenters who opposed infant baptism on the grounds that sacraments of the church could only be accepted knowingly by adults. Other religious communities in this tradition include the Mennonites and Amish. The Bruderhof communities attempt to emulate the communal life of the early Christian communities and oppose all forms of violence. They are very conservative on issues of sex and marriage. They are governed by community meetings and elected elders. They differ from other Anabaptist communities in that they do not isolate themselves from the modern world, and they hold property in common rather than as private property.

Hopefully you have also heard that Mumia was granted an indefinite stay of execution on 7 August, just ten days prior to his appointment with death. The stay came suddenly- to the surprise and amazement of many. Its announcement was followed by an outpouring of great joy. Many have worked untiringly in support of Mumia. The stay was a limited victory, yet it was a victory all the same. IT IS CLEAR THAT INTERNATIONAL CONCERN AND AWARENESS ABOUT MUMIA'S CASE WAS A VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR IN THE GRANTING OF THE STAY. Our hope is that this international activity will continue and grow in the weeks and months to come. Mumia's recent hearing in the Philadelphia court of Judge Albert Sabo was very painful for us as well as all those who are concerned for Mumia. Some of our brothers and sisters were present in the court for each of the days of the hearing. We were stunned by the coldness and hardness of heart directed toward Mumia, those trying to defend him and his supporters in general. This first hand experience has galvanised our feelings about this particular case as well as about the death penalty in general.
