A) Introduction Celtic Christianity has always been close to my heart given my love of early British history. The Celtic church has many lessons to teach the contemporary Church. The early Celtic Christian church was catholic and apostolic in nature, fiercely independent, in tune with creation, yet remaining committed to Scripture and tradition. It drew on the positive aspects of the earlier druidic religion yet remained true to the Faith and thereby was able to transform Celtic society without destroying it. I would like the Anglican Communion to model the ancient Celtic church: catholic and apostolic in nature, resisting of overburdening and corrupting hierarchy and structure, in tune with the created world, remaining committed to Scripture and tradition, and finally acting as a powerful transforming agent to Western society.

So the leaders of our prayer conference invited Graham McCartney from Northern Ireland to come and teach about Celtic Christianity and give a historical survey of the coming of the first missionaries to Iceland, and to the other Nordic lands from Ireland. Sweden and Denmark received their first Christian influence through Catholic missionaries from Germany, but Iceland and the Faeroes had their first Christian influence from a much purer source. The Catholic church came with a State church system, christening people by power and by the sword, but the Celtic monks came without any weapons or compulsion.

The stories cover Columba's miracles, prophesies and visions of angels. For me the main interest in the book is the picture of Iona it gives. It is an ideal book to read if you are about to visit Iona or have just visited, as the places mentioned and the scenes described often have remained unchanged since Columba's time. Only a quarter of the 400+ page book is taken up with "The Life Columba", there is a 100 page scholarly and readable introduction, extensive notes and a full bibliography.
