Extractions: Anglicans are delighted to see others becoming interested in "Celtic Spirituality", for Anglican Christianity is historically and culturally rooted in the wild mix of Celtic, Eastern Orthodox and Roman Christianity found in ancient Britain. There is, at present, a fascination with (and marketing of) that culture: Celtic art, Celtic dance, Celtic story, Celtic spirituality. If one were to believe the marketing displays, one might assume that true "Celtic" culture is pagan finding its spiritual center in goddess worship. However, to pretend that genuine "Celtic" spirituality is essentially pagan is to ignore the facts of history. Specifically Celtic Christianity was a powerful spiritual force for centuries and continues to challenge us to a more passionate, more creative approach to faith. When God became a human being in the person of Jesus, the Jewish culture was reflected in the incarnate God. Yet, even through Jewish culture enriched and nourished Jesus, Jesus himself was not uncritical of some of the culture. So it has been throughout the the growth of Christianity. As Christianity spread (not just the teaching, but the life of God taking root in people) as Christianity became rooted in other cultures it was both enriched and nourished by that culture (although not in an uncritical way). For example, American Christianity has both strengths and weaknesses that are not found in other cultural expressions of Christianity. These strengths can be offered to the world, even while American Christians should be self-critical, and open to the loving criticism from Christians in other cultures. So it is with Celtic Christianity. Christianity took root in Celtic communities very early, was enriched and nourished in uniquely Celtic ways, and gained strengths and weaknesses not found in other cultural expressions of Christianity.

Extractions: DONALD E. MEEK, UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN In the Spring 1992 issue of this Bulletin, I called attention to the vogue for modern Celtic Christianity. Here I shall comment on changes that have become evident in the direction of the movement since I wrote my first papers on the subject in the early 1990s, and then I shall offer a survey of recent writings and interpretations of sources. In conclusion, I shall provide a brief overview of recent scholarly writing on Scottish saints. Given the profusion of our itches, it is hardly surprising that this interpretation of early Christianity in the British Isles crosses denominational, and even religious, boundaries. It is also growing in its popularity, as is witnessed by the endless stream of publications claiming to expound some dimension of the theme. The popular brand of Celtic Christianity is to be distinguished carefully from the properly academic study of the history of early Christianity in the British Isles in the period before 1100. The popular books on Celtic Christianity published in the 1980s can be divided into two broad groups: devotional literature, aimed at those who wish to use Celtic models of prayer and reflection in public or private worship, as in the work of David Adam; and descriptive volumes, explaining the main themes of Celtic Christianity and stressing the differences between it and the present-day Christianity, as in the work of Ian Bradley and Esther de Waal.

Extractions: The harsh life is recorded in the words of Lewys Morganwg, a medieval bard talking of Saint Illtyd. He paints a picture of a saint wandering around Wales barefoot and standing naked in a cold spring for an hour each day. The practice of associating the new Christian faith with the older faith has produced a large number of sites where this evidence remains. The porch at Corwen church incorporates a standing stone, part of a megalithic circle is incorporated into the walls surrounding the church at Ysbyty Cynfyn (Ceredigion), Twrog's Stone stands beside the church at Maentwrog, another serves as the font at a church in Old Radnor (Powys). At present there is still controversy about the way sacred sites are used. Each time a sacred place was 're-consecrated' and a church established it could also be viewed as an act of vandalism against an older faith. Pilgrimage was an important aspect of the Celtic Christian church and this survived long after the synod of Whitby. An important site in Wales was Bardsey Island, where many saints and even Merlin are supposed to be buried. Given that the period following the Roman withdrawal was also the period when the missionaries had greatest impact in Wales, setting up so many Christian settlements, you might wonder if there is any hidden message about this time the "Dark Ages". It was during these years that the Celtic fringe of Ireland, Wales and Scotland stood out as areas of Christianity whilst the rest of Europe was almost exclusively pagan. Ireland escaped the early Viking raids and it was here that Christianity hung on in the darkest years.

During the mid-thirteenth to early fifteenth centuries, Sovereignty passed frequently between Scotland and England, with occasional incursions from Ireland. By the eighteenth century, it had become a major centre for the smuggling trade and to put a stop to this, the British Government enacted a new law in 1765, namely the Re-Vestment Act and purchased the entire Island for just £70,000. Whilst these measures were designed to save the UK Treasury approximately £100,000 per annum, they deprived the Islanders of their main source of income. Throughout the centuries the Isle of Man has developed a way of life and a culture all of its own. Many world events such as the Roman and Norman invasions of Britain passed it by and the Island quietly took visits from Irish and Scottish freebooters in its stride. The arrival of the Vikings however, did leave a lasting mark on this tiny Celtic nation.
