Su origen remoto habría sido el vishnuismo que creía que Vishnú era el "Dios supremo" que se manifestó como Krishna. A partir de estas ideas Chaitanya Mahaprabhu enseña que Krishna es más bien el "Dios principal" que un día se habría revelado como Vishnú. En este sentido, el pensamiento doctrinal de esta secta aparece como hindú, aunque con algunas transformaciones y adaptaciones nuevas. Dios ya no sería algo impersonal y desconocido solo algo personal a quien se le puede adorar y con quien se puede relacionar uno. En su estado final no tendría personalidad. Esta doctrina habría llegado a Estados Unidos en 1965 con el anciano Ahay Charan De Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896-1977) quien nació en Calcuta, India. También se define que este anciano hindú habría fundado en Nueva York este grupo y que su origen no habría estado en la India. Lo cierto es que los adherentes cambian sus nombres por otros de significado hindú y obtienen fondos vendiendo literatura como el "Bhagavad-Gita" y el diario "Retorno a la Divinidad".

De oorspronkelijke Bhagavad-Gita (zonder commentaar) maakt historisch gezien deel uit van de Vedische Schriften, waarop het gehele Hindoeïsme is gebaseerd. Hoewel de Hare Krishna-beweging al deze Vedische geschriften onderschrijft, is het commentaarboek van de stichter hun eigenlijke Bijbel. Het is een zeer ingewikkelde religie, die kort samengevat hierop neerkomt : de Hindoeistische oppergod Visjnoe heeft zich duizenden jaren geleden geïncarneerd in de God Krishna, die uiteindelijk de 'perfectionering' is van Visjnoe -en daardoor dus de échte oppergod is van waaruit alles geschapen werd. Behalve de oppergod, zijn er ook nog driekwart-goden, halfgoden, één-derde-goden en zo verder. De hemel zit vol met goden. De Hare-Krishna aanhanger gelooft in reïncarnatie, waarbij elk wezen (ook de dieren -vandaar het verbod om vlees te eten) een ziel heeft en terugkomt op aarde òf in de hemel. Op welke wijze hij terugkomt -als mens, dier, plant, bacterie,...- hangt af van de wijze waarop hij in zijn voorgaand leven zijn bestaan heeft geleid. Wij mensen hebben het unieke geluk over een grotere intelligentie te beschikken dan de andere wezens, en kunnen dus door heiliging, vasten, loutering, zang en dans voor Krishna, ervoor zorgen dat we ofwel als betere mensen ofwel zelfs als semi-goden ons volgend bestaan nù al verzekeren. Wie echter zich niet aan de Vedische wetten houdt, komt terug als een lager wezen.
