Extractions: Hutterian Brethren - General Information The Hutterian Brethren originated in Austria. Moravian gentry allowed Anabaptist groups to settle their domains as early as 1526 to help develop the local economies and project independence from the Holy Roman Empire. However, by 1528 the ruling class in the area began became threatened by the possibility of an Anabaptists separatist movement. The Stabler Anabaptist group of more than two hundred, led by Jakob Wiedemann, was expelled. After their expulsion the group adopted a communal lifestyle, pooling all their resources and agreeing to hold all things common. They eventually found refuge and some protection at Austerlitz, also in Moravia. Simultaneously, other Anabaptist groups were developing in other areas of Austria. In the Tirol, a Swiss Brethren missionary named George Blaurock had a successful ministry. Jacob Hutter, from Moos in the Puster Valley, became a convert and soon began a ministry in the Swiss Brethren tradition. Hutter became the leading Anabaptist leader in the Tirol by 1529. During that year he traveled to Austerlitz and was accepted into the Stabler community. When he returned to the Tirol, Hutter encouraged an ongoing relocation of small groups to the slightly more tolerant Moravian area because of the increase in persecution of Anabaptists in the Tirol. In 1533 Hutter moved from Tirol to Auspitz, where part of the Stabler group had moved in 1530 after a schism due to leadership disputes. His disciplinary and leadership skills enabled him to establish a sense of mission and cohesion within the discordant group. However, persecution of the Hutterites and other Anabaptist groups escalated in the mid-1530s and the Moravian land owners again expelled them. Hutters life was endangered because he was an important leader. He returned to the Tirol, but was captured and burned at the stake in Innsbruck in 1536. He refused to renounce his beliefs in the separation of church and state and he refused to take oaths, bear arms, or to abandon his support for a communal way of life.

Extractions: At the beginning of the Reformation in Zurich, Switzerland in the 1520's, the church leaders sought to restore the church based on New Testament principles. They sought to establish a believers' church, but soon their efforts came under the control of the state government. Those committed to the original goals were forced to withdraw if they wanted to build a church composed only of followers of Christ. These disciples sought to live in "the image of him that created him" (Colossians 3:10) and observe the "all things" taught in the New Testament. These Bible Christians were soon tagged with the Anabaptist name because they rebaptized those who had been baptized as infants. This caused the state to persecute and put them to death under a A. D. 529 Roman law. These disciples never referred to themselves as Anabaptist and frequently objected to the term because of the criminal character associated with it. They would have preferred to be called Brethren or Bible-believing Christians, but their enemies' nickname stuck. Later they were called Mennonites after a beloved leader in this restored church, Menno Simons. He was the only early leader who died a natural death. All the other important early leaders died a martyr's death by LMH - 1997 Following is a fuller story of the "beginnings."

This sect has been known variously as the Bruderhof, Los Hermanos Hutterianos (in Paraguay in the 1940s-50s), The Society of Brothers (in the 1950s), The Hutterian Brethren (in the 1970s-80s) and as The Hutterian Brethren East (early 1990s). They now may have to change their name yet again because they have been excommunicated by all branches of The Hutterian Church and, most recently, separated from a final splinter Hutterite group in Manitoba, Canada. Despite the Bruderhof's attempts to graft themselves upon the 450-year-old Hutterite root, they differ from the old-order Hutterites in a variety of important ways: they believe in the infallibility of the leading Elder, and that members must surrender not only all of their possessions, but also their consciences, minds and bedroom privacy to the leadership (which in our opinion makes them a totalitarian sect with serious cultic aspects). Bruderhof novices have to turn in all their material assets and, when they decide to leave or are kicked out, never have their property refunded (in direct opposition to what the term ÔnoviceÕ means in Christian monastic orders Ñ and to what the original Bruderhof by-laws state in which the novice can just loan his property.

PCHB NO. 02-061 ORDER GRANTING DISMISSAL Appellant Marlin Hutterian Brethren challenged the Department of Ecologys (Ecology) ORDER NO. DE 02 WRER-3930 issued against them for alleged unauthorized irrigation. The case came before the Pollution Control Hearings Board (Board) and was assigned PCHB No. 02-061. After the case was filed, Ecology apparently investigated the facts further and determined the irrigation cited in the Order was not unauthorized. Ecology, accordingly, rescinded Order DE 02WRER-3930 in June 2002 and Ecology now asks the Board to dismiss the appeal as moot. The Appellants, Marlin Hutterian Brethren, oppose the dismissal, ask the Board to rule the Order was wrongly entered, and seek an award of attorneys fees and costs for defending the case. The courts of this state have long followed the general rule that appeals involving only moot issues should be dismissed. Westerman v. Cary
