Extractions: Continental European Protestantism Doctrines Mennonite doctrine is encapsulated in the following statements of faith: the Schleitheim Articles (1527), the Dordrecht Confession (1632), the Christian Fundamentals (1921), and the Mennonite Confession of Faith (1963). Like almost all Christian traditions, Mennonites believe in the Trinity and that Jesus Christ is the Word of God incarnate. The Bible is inspired by God and is the sole source of authority for Christians. Human beings are created in God's image but this image has been tarnished through disobedience and sin. It is through Jesus Christ that salvation from sin is offered. Jesus will return to judge all people and create a new heaven and a new earth. The Mennonites have a number of doctrines that distinguish them from some other mainstream Christian traditions. They differ principally in their perception of the church and its relationship to the state, which is regarded as a secular institution. The church consists only of those who have accepted God's offer of salvation. They believe that no one should be coerced into joining the church or persecuted on account of their beliefs, for faith can only be a matter of personal choice. Only believing Christians can be baptised; infant baptism has no basis in the Bible. Baptism and the Lord's Supper are signs of God's grace. Mennonites practice the washing of feet following the example of Jesus' act of washing his disciples feet. This serves as a reminder of the need of personal cleansing from sin. Mennonites do not swear oaths and avoid all forms of violence.

Or, have these poor negers not as much right to fight for their freedom, as you have to keep them slaves? Now consider well this thing, if it is good or bad. And in case you find it to be good to handel these blacks in that manner, we desire and require you hereby lovingly, that you may inform us herein, which at this time never was done, viz., that Christians have such a liberty to do so. To the end we shall be satisfied on this point, and satisfy likewise our good friends and acquaintances in our native country, to whom it is a terror, or fearful thing, that men should be handelled so in Pennsylvania. Sa remise en cause de la transsubstantiation, du baptême des nouveau-nés et des autres dogmes de l'Église le conduisirent à étudier attentivement le Nouveau Testament et les écrits de Martin Luther Il se rallia finalement à la position de Luther, pour qui la Bible devait représenter l'autorité suprême des chrétiens, et rompit avec l'Église catholique. Bien qu'en désaccord avec les anabaptistes, mouvement religieux qui conduisit un soulèvement avorté à Münster en 1535, le soutien qu'il tenta de leur apporter mit sa propre vie en péril et l'obligea à fuir pendant un an. En 1537, il devint prêcheur anabaptiste à Groningue, ville où il se maria. Au cours des années suivantes, il se révéla être un missionnaire infatigable, sillonnant d'autres régions de la Frise, du sud de la Hollande et de l'Allemagne pour transmettre la nouvelle foi. Il mourut le 31 janvier 1561, près d'Ordesloe, Holstein.

Filmmaker Ann Kennard explores the private world of the Mennonites and the intrepid founders of their community in southern Ontario. Benjamin Eby crossed the Canadian border in 1807 in a horse cart, carrying a quilt stitched with ten thousand pockets. Each pocket contained an American silver dollar to buy off the mortgages on the 60,000 acres of land the Mennonites purchased in Waterloo county. Eby would go on to found the Mennonite community in St Jacob's, Ontario and be ordained as the first Mennonite bishop in Canada. He built the first Mennonite church, opened and taught at the first Mennonite one-room schoolhouse, bought the first printing press and distributed the first Mennonite newsletter. Far from being mired in the past, this fascinating documentary captures not only the Mennonite cultural, religious and community traditions but the voices of dissent and change, the conflict and struggle of a society in transition. In Mennonite schools today, only some children wear hats, plain clothes or long skirts. In the fields, one farmer uses a manual haying machine while another works with mechanized bailers and combines. Today nearly 50 different groups of Mennonites live in Ontario, fragmented according to different values and beliefs.

This is why some Mennonites hesitate to sing "God bless America." They want God to bless all nations. Mennonites began this denomination on the run from the government and many times through the years have found themselves opposed to their earthly government. Sometimes they have had good relations with their host country, but always there is an unease about how long this will last. Often the relationship sours over the issue of conscientious objection to war: when Mennonites weren't given this right, they often moved to another country.

What secrets in their past shaped them into becoming what now appears to be a people living in the past? In order to understand this, the dramatic and tragic history of the Anabaptists must be revealed. A Brief History Swiss Brethren Briefly speaking, the Anabaptist movement "officially" began in the sixteenth century. Although, Christians of similar theology and circumstances have existed since the third century, the sixteenth century Anabaptists were closest to the Waldensians in their beliefs. (The Waldensians originated, about 1160 A.D., in Lyons, France with Peter Waldo, after he discovered huge discrepancies between Scripture and the Roman Catholic Church's doctrines ). A wave of God's Spirit was already evident throughout Europe during the sixteenth century. However, the first sign of any stronghold amongst the populace was in Zurich, Switzerland, under the leadership of Konrad Grebel, a disciple of Ulrich Zwingli Zwingli had laid out for his Bible students a strong Scriptural foundation, putting emphasis against the hypocrisy of compromise. Because such was not founded on Scripture, he taught them against such ungodly Roman Catholic mandates as indulgences (money charged for prayer), worship of images, relics, and saints, the sacramental view in the mass, and enforced celibacy.
