I asked myself this question often when engaging this project, and the reason is simple. As a student at Vanderbilt University I became witness to a rather heavy degree of missionary activity by the Bahai Student Association of Vanderbilt . One of my co-workers in the dormitory where I worked as a Resident Adviser repeatedly asked me to attend one of their information sessions and, to appease his insistence, I did. The session consisted of a speaker from the local community who presented an historical overview and some fundamental tenants of the Bahai Faith. Dispersed among these basic teachings were purported innovations that I had been taught as a Muslim. In addition, the speaker made claims about the role of religion which contradict what I believe the fundamental function of religion is or can be. Finally, and perhaps initially most disturbing, the speaker omitted key historical events and twisted others. Included among these assertions were claims that the Bahai Faith was free from denominational splits, that Bahaullah spent forty years incarcerated, that the Bahai Faith was the world's newest religion, that Bahais have historically refrained from political activity, and that Bahaullah practiced monogamy.

People went down wanting to co-operate and then they were detained The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) is refusing to say how many people were arrested but said detainees were being held for suspected visa violations and other offences. The arrests sparked angry protests in Los Angeles by thousands of Iranian-Americans waving banners which read "What's next? Concentration camps?" and "Free our fathers, brothers, husbands and sons". Official radio in Iran also reported the arrests and the protests, which it said were mounted by families of the detainees who converged on Los Angeles.

The plans, which were made public in the 2004 budget request submitted to the US Congress this week, will redirect the main thrust of US efforts away from Cold War-era targets such as eastern Europe towards the Middle East and Indonesia. If it [Arabic TV channel] becomes a shrill, 'Look at us, look at what we do,' a propaganda machine, it will fail. The project, which has been under discussion in Washington for several months, is being seen as an attempt to counter the wide influence of the Qatar-based Arabic TV channel, Al-Jazeera. The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), which oversees all non-military US international broadcasting, is seeking a rise of some 10% in its $500m funding, in order to add new TV and radio output to its new target areas.
