We have not learned the art of beating the air, or replying to nonsense. The only meaning we could gather from the rambling writer's remarks was a confirmation of our accusation, and a wonderful discovery that a long controverted point is now settled; the unpardonable sin is declared to be speaking against the Darbyites. Neither Mr. Newton* nor Mr. Muller** would sanction such action; it is only from one clique that we receive this treatment. It is worthy of note that even the printer was ashamed or afraid to put his name to the printed paper. Our error was rectified as soon as ever we knew of it, and being fallible we could do no more; but these men, who pretend to be so marvellously led of the Spirit, have in this case deliberately, and in the most unmanly manner, sought to injure the character of one who has committed the great sin of mortifying their pride, and openly exposing their false doctrine. Extractions: In 1838 Darby went to reside in French Switzerland, and made many disciples. Congregations were formed in Geneva, at Lausanne, where most of the Methodist and other dissenters joined the Brethren, at Vevey and elsewhere in Vaud. His opinions also found their way into France, Germany, German Switzerland, and Italy; but French Switzerland has always remained the stronghold of Plymouthism on the Continent, and for his followers there Darby wrote two of his most important tracts, Le Ministere considere dans sa nature and De la Presence et de faction du S. Esprit dans I'eglise. The revolution in the canton Vaud, brought about by Jesuit intrigue in 1845, brought persecution to the Brethren in the canton and in other parts of French Switzerland, and Darby's life was in great jeopardy. important division among the Exclusives came to a crisis in 1881, when William Kelly and Darby became the recognized leaders of two sections who separated on a point of discipline. This was followed (1885) by the disruption of the strict Darbyite section, two communions being formed out of it upon points of doctrine. The movement has a distinct interest for students of church history: (1) as illustrating again the desire of certain Christians to pass over the garnered experience of the centuries,~and by going straight to the Bible to make a fresh start without any other authority, precedent or guidance; (2) in its development alongside the Evangelical, T~actarian and Broad Church movements of the 19th ent.rry and its affinities with them all,. A certain haphazardism that has always marked the Brethren is responsible for the present lack of qualified leaders. The early enthusiasm has waned, and no provision was made for proper theological study.

The Plymouth Brethren (often known throughout the world as Assemblies or Gospel Halls) are a small groups of Christians with a deep and rich history. The PBs should not be confused with any "Brethren" out of the Continental Free Church tradition, (such as the Church of the Brethren, Brethren Church, etc.), nor the Arminian Pentecostal Assemblies of God. For decades, the PBs reached out with their various needs to brother Miles Stanford by telephone and letter, yet often in pride and denial that they could be helped or ministered to by someone "outside" their Assembly system. However, it is often only an outsider who is in a position to evaluated conditions as they truly are, rather than how insiders represent them to be. Miles' burden was always that the PBs would discover the rich legacy of Pauline Dispensationalism established by the original founders of the movement. According to Owen Chadwick's The Victorian Church , "They began first as a little extreme evangelical group in Dublin from 1827 that believed anyone may celebrate the Lord's Supper [administer Holy Communion] or preach, and received the name when the strange powerful ex- Anglican clergyman J. N. Darby went to Plymouth in 1830. In 1847-49 the Brethren divided, through Darby's rigidity, into Open Brethren and Exclusive Brethren, the latter holding no communion with others. At the best-attended services on 30 March 1851 there were in England and Wales 7,272 Brethren" (36n). Francis Newman (younger brother of John Henry , who was to become the famous Roman Catholic Cardinal Newman) had achieved first class honors in classics and mathematics at Oxford went to Dublin in 1827 to be private tutor to the household of Serjeant Pennefeather, a leading Irish lawyer. While there he met John Nelson Darby, a curate in the Church of Ireland and Pennefeather's brother-in-law. Darby had been meeting on Sundays with three other men, Dr. Edward Cronin, a convert from Roman Catholicism Francis Hutchinson, son of the Archdeacon of Killala, Sir Samuel Synge and John Gifford Bellet, a classics prizewinner from Trinity College, to "break bread" in a way they believed the early church did. Others began to join with them including, Lord Congelton, who hired an auction room for their growing Sunday meetings.

HUS Linnell patiently laboured on until about 1845, when a surprising change came over the scene, when, in short, there arrived a tardy recognition of his powers . He was now fifty-four years of age an old man as some would be at his years. But Linnell seemed to have learned the secret of perennial youth. Since his breakdown in the twenties he had wonderfully recovered his constitutional vigour, thanks to a naturally tough frame, and perhaps, also, in some measure to that careful regimen which he had established in his household, and from which he never afterwards departed. As we have seen, a certain amount of fame had arisen out of the exhibition of the 'St. John preaching in the Wilderness' at the British Institution in 1839. Perhaps this recognition of his ability may have acted as a stimulus to his still latent powers, and done much to call forth a fresh efflorescence of talent. Certain it is that he began to paint with renewed vigour about this time that is, roughly speaking, about his fiftieth year.
