Extractions: print-ready version share this article with a friend Volume 13, Issue 5 : Eschaton Jack Van Deventer John Nelson Darby (1800-1882) changed the Church more dramatically than most people realize. We have today legions of pastors, missionaries, and parachurch ministers who tell willing flocks that the end-times are upon us, our only hope is the secret rapture, and cultural transformation is futile. These well-meaning individuals would like us to believe that such teachings are the obvious conclusion of a simple, literal interpretation of the Bible. Mr. Darby started the Church thinking along these lines. Mr. Darby began his career as a lawyer, but quit to become a curate for the Church of England. Shortly thereafter he joined the Plymouth Brethren movement. The Brethren were a group of men who, having become disenchanted with the Established Church and the trappings of denominationalism, established a new denomination designed to conform to New Testament church principles. Because the Brethren movement was a breakaway group, there were few doctrinal constraints or safeguards. Early on, Darby and other early Plymouth Brethren leaders claimed to teach "rediscovered truths" that had been lost since the time of the apostles. The Brethren claimed their teachings were a departure from the "man-made doctrines" of the church fathers and the Reformers. They warned followers to be wary of the commentaries, creeds, and catechisms that were mere doctrines of men, and believed that they alone were submissive to the Scriptures.

Mr. Leigh: That is an important point. It is difficult to imagine how such bodies would not be charities. The model of incorporation that the Government have chosen is far reaching. In addition to designating a range of bodies to be public authorities, the Bill states in clause 3 that all legislation must be interpreted in line with the convention. Not only will religious bodies that get caught in the definition of "public authority" be hit, but all religious 20 May 1998 : Column 1053 bodies will find that people who want to sue them will start putting a human rights spin on existing legislation to try to get what they want. That will become most apparent in employment law. Unfair dismissal cases will begin to take on a new gloss as a result of people pleading human rights in conjunction with the existing law.

Extractions: Ernest Reisinger In our last study we considered the vital relationship of Dispensationalism to the Lordship controversy. Dispensationalism is the theological mother of non-Lordship teaching. In this study I wish to give a very brief history of dispensationalism in the U.S.A. This is not meant to be an exhaustive study. It is just a little parenthesis in our studies on the Lordship controversy. I am taking this little diversion because many, if no, most, of those carrying Scofield Bibles, who sit under Dispensational teachers, know very little about the system and its history. They do not know how the Dispensational theological system differs from the Reformational, historical theology in general, and covenant, Reformed Theology in particular. This is true not only of those in the pews but also, in many instances, the preachers themselves have never seriously compared Dispensationalism with covenant theology as it is most clearly expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith and the theology of the Heidelberg Catechism. Covenant Theology is the archrival of Dispensationalism. It is my conviction that many who are presently disposed toward Dispensationalism would not be victims of the system if they were better acquainted and informed about the system and its history-its theological roots and the doctrinal errors it has spawned.

Extractions: The matter of the local church Scripture Witness Lee spoke often of the Brethren in relation to their ministries, crediting them, along with the Moravian Brethren, for having begun the recovery of the proper practice of the proper local church life: Watchman Nee Orthodoxy (Watchman Nee, What Are We? Both Watchman Nee and Witness Lee have testified that they received much spiritual help and scriptural enlightenment from the Brethren. They were particularly impressed by the abundant blessing that accompanied their emphasis on the equality and oneness of the believers. Although the Brethren were not fully clear regarding the matter of the local church, they nevertheless experienced the blessing that God bestows upon believers who meet together in unity (Ps. 133).
